The AJC will be selecting its all-state boys and girls basketball teams this week for publication on Sunday.
We’ll pick a first and second team of five players each, plus 10 honorable mentions, for a total of 20 players per classification. We’ll also pick all-classification boys and girls players of the year?
Pick any class and tell us your all-state team.
Who are the no-brainers? Who are the ones that might get overlooked?

A Basketball has great talent
Charlton – Courtney Williams (5′9 G, Jr)
Turner – Antania “Kitty” Graddic (6′3 C, So), Zenia Coley (5′7 G, So)
WIlcox – Sherebra Montgomery (5′10 F. Jr)
South Georgia has the best two post play(True Post) right off 75 S. @ Turner/Crisp,
guard play is not bad either, lots of raw talent, need to work on their face up games. Kid from Charlton really nice to watch

Ive seen John “Chip” Burke play 3 times and each time all ive seen him get outshined by Caleb Hayes of North Atlanta, Mitch Alterman of Riverwood, and Greg Sessions of Grady. Each game, those three players were the best on the court. Period. They were more efficient shooting wise, passed the ball, and didnt argue. Yes he can score in high volumes but so could you if you shot 30 times a game. good player, and deserving of all state, but it also has a lot to do with the “system” NS ran.

Douglass High School: Julian Varner and Sirdarius Henry are one of the best combo guards in the state. They both are 11 graders. They both are high percentage shooters with range. Varner is consider a power guard by many that can play inside out or outside in. Henry is consider an explosive guard and a finisher super quick that teams had to double team him or play a box and one on him. He is the truth. They both are exciting to watch in the toughest region in the state 6AAAA.

Douglass High School of Atlanta: Sirdarius Henry – He lead the state of Georgia in scoring in Class-AAAA 26.9 pg avg. One of the best scoring guards in the country and he plays good defense. He is just a junior. Please don’t leave this kid out. He earned it to be selected All State. The best is yet to come for him.

I really see now that the GACA All State teams are political. A good example is in Class A girls. You have a player in Keyona Hayes (St. Francis HS) of Region 5 that made all region but not all state? This is the same region as the POY Morgan Batey(Pace Academy) and North GA POY Grace Leah Baughn(weslyan). So she played the same competition as these two girls and averaged 21 pts and 15 rebounds per game! She also had 15 double doubles with a string of 12 in a row! Those numbers I guess are not good enough to be in the same conversation as those two? I am not saying they are not desreving but Keyona deserved to be All State! I guess that is what happens when the region is represented by the region winners coach. The selection needs to be changed!

I saw all the big name teams play at least once this year (Milton, Norcross, South Atlanta, Miller Grove, etc, etc)….in terms of MVP, POY, etc (which does not mean best player), it’s easily Brogdon from GAC. Look at their schedule then look at his numbers – consistent – I’m not saying he’s the best player of all the bunch, but he is the POY among all of them.
The jury is in

If you look at the body of work a player has put in throughout the season as well as their high school career, I would would have to say CHAKECIA MILLER from Campbell high School deserve to be on the All-State list. She is a 4year starter and has averaged 15pts 4asst 5steals in her career while maintaining a 4.2 gpa on the States #2 team. Campbell’s region was filled with division 1 players and each time Campbell has played those players she has come out on top with wins and stats when it counted.

Hey Todd. I am a little fused about yo 5-AAAAA all state player picks. I agree that Jesse McMillan should be the coach of the year but fine it hard to believe that you can do the following without any 1st team all state palyers.
* Won the last 17 games in a row beating 7 top ten teams down the stretch including no.1 thru no 3.
* Beat the no. 3 team in the nation when nobody believed it was even possible
* Won the state championship after losing 7 of their first 9 games
* Upset the no. 3 team in the country which many said was the biggest upset in GA sports history
Yet Norcross did all of this without not even one 1st team all state player? I fine that hard to believe

Three Straight Plus One – I’m sorry you missed the memo, Todd and Mike C. are just alike. They like most of Atlanta bought into the Milton / Boyd hype and went on record very early on who their favorites were. They never believed Norcross could beat the mighty Milton because they hadn’t propped Norcross or their players upon the AJC pedestal. They could never admit that they were wrong and that the Norcross players may not be as hyped as the Milton players but are just as good if not better. In the end, their opinions and ratings really aren’t important and are not a predictor of future success. I’m certain their will be a couple of suprise players at the college level that never made any AJC list.

Jay Rome was the best player I saw all season. That kid is a BEAST! If he were 6′10″ he would be one of the top NBA picks out of high school. We could not stop him. He put 33 points on us in only three quarters as he did not even score the first quarter. He is a physical speciman who can play inside and outside. Best I saw this year.

julian Varner and Sir darious Henry of Douglass high should both be in the conversation.julian is a smooth 6′1 combo guard with a sweet jump shot and range.he also rebounds well and is very unselfish. He plays good D.Julian is fundamentally SOUND,what colleges look for .he also handles the ball VERY well underpressuresomething else college coaches look for.Sir D henry is a explsive, quick scorer with quick hands and very athletic. He has UNlimited range and scores with the best of em.(27.7ppg)they are BOTH juniors and with a solid summer by both,Douglass should have one of the best backcourts in the state, nation!
