Who had the best high school basketball team in Georgia this year? Regardless of classification?

Miller Grove has a strong case:

* Defeated Milton 71-61 at the start of the season when Milton was ranked No. 1 in the nation by several polls, including USA Today.

*Played well in out-of-state tournaments, including winning the Beach Ball Classic at Myrtle Beach.  Note: Miller Grove did lose to Florida’s Dr. Krop during the regular season but Dr. Krop later had to forfeit the win for using an ineligible player.

* Finished with a 32-1 record, with the one loss to archrival  Southwest DeKalb in the region championship.

* Won third Class AAAA state championship in a row.

Who had Georgia’s best team? Miller Grove coach Sharman White didn’t back down from the question. He voted for his squad.

The national spotlight will be on Miller Grove coach Sharman White and his squad next year (AJC photo)

“Most definitely, in my opinion, I think we had the best team and that we did the things to show that,” White said. “We had a convincing win over the No. 1 team in the nation, did well against out-of-state competition and capped it off with a state championship. I don’t think there is too much else to be said.

“Even if nobody else believes we’re the best team in Georgia, we believe it.”

Here’s what I do believe: Without a doubt, Miller Grove will be Georgia’s top contender for a mythical national championship next season, as was Milton this past year. Miller Grove has the pedigree with three state championships in a row and the star power in junior Tony Parker, who has around 50 early scholarship offers, including Duke, North Carolina, Georgia Tech and UGA. Fellow junior Brandon Morris has around a dozen offers, including UGA and Florida.

Now it’s YOUR turn. Who had Georgia’s best team this past season and why? State your case below. Any inappropriate remarks will not be tolerated.

norcross #1 double

Norcross is #1 we tanked it early so everyone would overlook and underestimate us. Norcross would beat MG by 40pts. No sir — no 6 offensive rebounds in a row for tony parker after missing 5 layups in a row vs. norcross.

Have to go with Norcross as #1 Boys & Girls…
Miller Grove in the other classes for Boys…
Wesylean/Buford in other classes for Girls..

Eventhough my SWD Panthers beat Miller Grove and Norcross….I would have to give the overall nod to Miller Grove as the overall best team in the State. Miller Grove would drill Norcross by 20 plus points.

Yeah, Tift County be the best team in the state. We’d played like it all season. Milton catched us on a bad night. They lucked up, cause on another night we beat them by 25 points. We got the best coach in the state. He outcoach anyone. We got the best young players in the state. I cant wait til next year cause we get more great players coming in. We wont lose a game next year. We gonna raise that trophy and South GA gonna represent!!!!

@Tift Blue – First, your team isn’t even in the discussion. Second, is that really how you write? in public???? Somebody check Tift County schools’ accreditation, I think it needs to be pulled…

OK, lets check the quality of the competition and Miller Grove finishes number 1, the won the second best national holiday tournament, beating highly ranked teams each night. Norcross is definately number 2, followed by columbia. Wilco is not in the race simply because of the quality of competition, wilco would not make it out of region 6AAAA or any AAAAA region. Washington County Girls i would put #3 behind Norcross, Weslyen, Washington, Fayette,

Miller Grove the best team in Ga. no doubt

Tired of ATL embarrassing all of GA

March 15th, 2011
4:02 pm

Everybody thinks South/middle Georgia hoops can’t compare with ATL area hoops, but the truth is South/middle Georgia Hoops just can’t compare with the “all-atlanta area AAU recruited high school teams”. Check the history!!! Middle and south ga won all the time in hoops up until the this recruiting era. Tift County, Valdosta, Savannah, and Beach high school have all gone to the final four or semis in recent history for AAAAA (None of which are really AAAAA in enrollment). These schools lost to similiar teams Wheeler, Norcross, and Milton. Other cities in GA like Augusta, Albany, Macon, and Columbus have similiar complaints with the smaller public and private classification schools doing the same thing up in ATL……

VALDOSTA is the true AAAAA champs in my opinion.

Miller Grove is the best team on the state, not only because they beat Milton early or that they won the Peach Jam Tournament! Its because they simply have the best team and it was proven when they won their 3rd consecutive state title without argubly their most important player in Henry Brooks!! And I would rank Milton 2nd (looking at their national schedule, remember they lost to the #1 team in the country (St. Patrick, NJ) by 2), then Norcross, Columbia and GAC.

Miller Grove gets the nod as the #1 team in the state. They had a tremendous season. Big Win over then #1 ranked team in the nation (Milton) and won the 2nd toughest H.S. tourney in the nation. Also ranked in the top 10 in 2 national polls….Let’s not forget the 3peat!!! That is an amazing accomplishment for a program thats only been in exsistence since 2004. They won the last two games of the state tournament without Henry Brooks. I’m looking forward to next season; they will have an opportunity at a mythical national title and a 4th consecutive state title. SWD won’t make it easy for them.

Washington County girls are 32-0!!! No other girls team has that record. To not mention them is so disrespectful. Give credit where credit is due. I wish people from Atlanta would stop being so bias. Atlanta is a city in Georgia, not the STATE of georgia!!

Campbell girls basketball team was the best team in the state this year. Norcross won the title but it would been a different outcome if Campbell had its best player(not scorer) playing at 70% instead of 40%. Norcross would have folded under pressure like they did briefly in the 3rd qtr. Campbell wasn’t able to pressure them the whole game due to the injury to Miller. She was the head that made the team go and if she wasn’t injured it would have been a different outcome. Norwood was beating Norcross single handedly for a stretch by herslf. Campbell had the best guard combination in the state for the last couple of years. With that being said congrats to Norcross on winning the Championship with that made up team. *side note* Campbell beat Mceachern 3 times this year so thats why I didn’t say Mceachern was the best in the state.

Have a tournament featuring all of the State Champions in all Classifications and let the outcome determine the best team. Bet Wilkinson County 32-0 will give any of the other classifications a run for their money….I think the GHSA did this once before and the outcome was not too good for the higher classifications….

March 16th, 2011

My vote goes to Columbia won every game in the state playoffs by 20 plus points. They have one best coach in Ga. The 2 games that they lost in state were on the other teams floor where I think a lil ref bias were going on, and if you were at the games you know what I’m speaking of.

beside that was with a different team from both schools that played then so that’s neither here or there we are talking now. CHS should have stayed where they were but Coach knew what was coming. He is a smart man and very good coach.

Congrats CHS on your Repeat.

I agree with HB, have a tournament with all the State winner and see what comes out, then you can say whois the best in the State. That would be a money maker. A neutral site

First of all let me say this, Tired of ATL embarrassing all of GA u have got to put that meth down and get real. I’m tired of S. Georgia bringing these mediocre teams up here during playoff time and expecting to compete it just aint gonna happen. Valdosta had a good team and played Norcross well I commend yall for that, I don’t see why u can’t say that about our teams. I give credit where its due, you’re right about how south GA used to to win. (Dougherty, Westover, Savannah and Beach) I was born and raised right here so I know the history heck I was on a team that lost in the AAA finals to Dougherty in 97. The fact is our population has changed in ATL since then, when thousands of people move here daily we don’t have to recruit. New kids come in all the time that’s why u can’t compete with us, just give us our due credit we give u guys credit during football season. Now all of a sudden we’re cheaters b/c u can’t compete, sounds like sore losers to me. We didn’t complain when Valdosta won all those titles with 18-19 year old sophomores and juniors b/c they were being held back early on in school to ensure a good team year after year once they’re in high school. Please spare me with all of ur crying, just tighten up down there! And to MGHS-alum don’t bad mouth Columbia our Coach Mac run rings around White anyday that’s for sure. Coach Mac been competing for titles since the early 90’s, I’ll be honest I like another school n the county having success.Don’t talk noise about us b/c out of all the times we faced off u guys got one win against us and that just happened this year, seems to me u guys should b glad we left. And for the record it wasn’t Coach Mac’s decision to drop down it was the rest of the coaches, don’t forget b4 we won back to back AAA titles we won 2 AAAA titles.

March 16th, 2011
3:04 pm

Why are you so defensive I have not bad mouthed Coach McCrary or any other coach for that matter I said he was a good coach and that is not sarcasm that is honsety I am a Dekalb high school graduate of the 90’s and know Coach McCrary’s track so by no means was I insulting him!!!!!

There was the option for CHS to remain in quad A and the decision was made so don’t take your frustrations out on me!! he indeed has more experience than White and could very well serve as a mentor to him but circels around him I highly doubt it, regardless the fact still remains trip A is a joke in regards to CHS.

I don’t understand what the anger is about a simple statement of opinion was voiced! Please check CHS history it took CHS 20 years to do what Miller Grove has done in 7 or less and in regards to coaching WHite has also done what Coach Mac didn’t in less time but I am not the one hostile I tried being respectful but here comes the hood mentality.

MGHS #1….Their record, skill and coaching ability speaks for itself, so I will refrain from furter dialogue. Much respect to the other great teams as well.

9:11 pm

The easiest way to settle this(especially if the 4/8 plan passes) is to have an All Class Tournament. Take the upper and lower division winners in each class, put them in the Macon Centreplex, let them decide the one and only true state champion.

March 16th, 2011
9:34 pm

Its very easy to win state titles when every school in Atl recruit players and teams like WACO have to play with players that grow up in there city!!! GHSA really needs to crack down on players transferring into school year in and year out…. It very unfair but WACO 32-0 with homegrown players

March 16th, 2011
11:19 pm

Miller Grove(boys)…..hands down!! Abstain from voting for the girls.

After MG, I would take Norcross, Columbia, Milton and SWD as my 5 teams (in no particular order)to play against the top 5 from any other state and feel confident that GA would come out on top. Personally, I think Milton would have bested Norcross in a best of 5 or 7 series. And there isn’t one team in the state that I would take over MG in a best of whatever series.

@Tift Blue… i dont believe Tift Co could come within 10 of Milton on a good night. and Coach Holland is not the best coach in the state when Buford came down to the Tift Co tournament over Christmas break and beat Tift by 5 on their home floor. If he cant beat a 2AA school at home why would he have a remotely close chance with Milton or anyone else at a neutral site? SMH

Come on man please, whose angry? We have no reason to be angry, like I stated the first time state playoffs are nothing to us whether its in AAA, AAAA or whatever classification you can think of. How can u talk about AAA when while we were n AAAA we were the cream of the crop, us and Tucker. You guys just were just the school with a nice gym that’s about it, head to head u guys never beat us until this season. All u could talk about was scrimmages but we all know coach Mac doesn’t use strategy n scrimmages, he just let them play. The decision was made the AD and the other coaches to stay down n AAA. Its more coaches than Mac up at Columbia and they all aren’t having success n AAA, remember that. Please understand I’m not bashing MG but u will respect this Blue and Orange especially when had to head ur 1- and whatever against us

Norcross is the champion but i don’t think they are better than milton. If loyd hit his free throws and Milton held onto the lead would fans still say Norcross is far better than Milton? IF Norcross ever had a comfortable lead id give u that but both times they played Milton had control of the game, just got out coached at the end in the state championship. i would say miller grove is number 1 norcross is 2a milton is 2b. columba is 4. Whoever put gac over milton needs to give in his pass to watch basketball, they are not in the same category. But its not just my opinion Milton is still ranked top 20 natinally, while no other team than MG is ranked that high.

Columbia is good, Miller Grove is great.. I respect the Columbia pride, but you must admit that what Coach White has done since the school has opened speaks volumes. No team from DeKalb County and only 10 teams from the state have three-peated before. Before there was Toney Parker, there was Mfon Udofia, who is arguable one of the best point guards to play bball in DeKalb. As a junior, he took Miller Grove to the Final Four–third year of the school’s existence–and the rest is history. The year MG won state was Parker’s Freshman year..
1. Miller Grove
2. Milton
3. Columbia
4. Norcross
5. GAC
6. Willco.

WilCo.. I watched the team, well coached.. But stay on your two lane road..

I have to admit MGHS is a legit contender to the crown! But he who has the most rings is king! And that would be Columbia hands down.. when Columbia was in 4AAAA they were putting MGHS away every year, and just this year they only lost by a point at MGHS after dominating the entire game. what other school has won back to back championships in two different classes???? in the last 8 years Columbia has been the premier team in the state of GA. Whats disrespectfull is that you can even mention some of these other schools in the same sentence with columbia, whats even crazier is that Columbia was just a girls choke fest away from being one of the few schools to go back to back boys and girls. WACO deserves its due this year but to be mentioned in the conversation you have to be consistant.. the winner is .. Columbia!
