Who had the best high school basketball team in Georgia this year? Regardless of classification?
Miller Grove has a strong case:
* Defeated Milton 71-61 at the start of the season when Milton was ranked No. 1 in the nation by several polls, including USA Today.
*Played well in out-of-state tournaments, including winning the Beach Ball Classic at Myrtle Beach. Note: Miller Grove did lose to Florida’s Dr. Krop during the regular season but Dr. Krop later had to forfeit the win for using an ineligible player.
* Finished with a 32-1 record, with the one loss to archrival Southwest DeKalb in the region championship.
* Won third Class AAAA state championship in a row.
Who had Georgia’s best team? Miller Grove coach Sharman White didn’t back down from the question. He voted for his squad.
“Most definitely, in my opinion, I think we had the best team and that we did the things to show that,” White said. “We had a convincing win over the No. 1 team in the nation, did well against out-of-state competition and capped it off with a state championship. I don’t think there is too much else to be said.
“Even if nobody else believes we’re the best team in Georgia, we believe it.”
Here’s what I do believe: Without a doubt, Miller Grove will be Georgia’s top contender for a mythical national championship next season, as was Milton this past year. Miller Grove has the pedigree with three state championships in a row and the star power in junior Tony Parker, who has around 50 early scholarship offers, including Duke, North Carolina, Georgia Tech and UGA. Fellow junior Brandon Morris has around a dozen offers, including UGA and Florida.
