Let’s update this blog for the quarterfinals. Miller Grove beat Sequoyah fairly easily Tuesday in our ”most intriguing” second-round game.
I’m sitting in Fort Valley waiting for Fayette County to tip it off against Lovejoy in one of the top QF games of the weekend. Eager to watch Adam Smith, one of the state’s premier scorers. This should be a good one.
On Saturday, the top game is Norcross vs. Wheeler at West Georgia. These are the only teams in AAAAA that can challenge Milton. There, I said it. Not sure I’m going out on a limb with that.
Speaking of good QF’s, I see that Kentavious Caldwell scored 40 in Greenville’s 2-point win over Wilcox County, the team I picked to win Class A. Nick Marshall had 16.
As far as girls go, I don’t think there’s a better team in Georgia than Fayette County. Just saw them hammer Warner Robins. hard to defend a 6-4 post w/ skill, plus a UConn signee. The sophomore PG is smooth. We need an all-clas tournament.
OK, got to go. Smith just hit a 3 at the first-quarter buzzer. Fayette leads 17-14.

At the end of the day, Miller Grove is one of the best teams in the country. Probably the best of not one of the 2 best teams in the state. They have a team full of Div 1 recruits and no one can dispute their talent. Should they win Wed at Sequoyah? Yes. Will they win? Maybe. A team that loses to Miller Grove, regardless of the margin doesn’t mean that team was a pretender. I believe Sequoyah is one of the 4 best “teams” in the state tournament. The others being SWD and Bainbridge. I agree that the state championship goes through Miller Grove. Not because of their record, because they are the defending champion and until they get beat, they are the champions.
Now, Sequoyah has played their schedule with perfection. There were some games that they should not have won, but found a way to get it done. It is hard to go 29-0 in anything. I don’t care what it is. Trash them all you want for the “weak” schedule. Your opinion of the teams they play really don’t matter. What does matter is that they played and won every single time they took the floor. They played a much bigger team from Tennessee at camp in Chattanooga this summer. The team was Tyner Academy and their All-American 7 footer was held to 4 points on 1 field goal with a final margin of victory of over 30 points. Sequoyah also beat a much larger Science Hill team by 12 and then played at Milton and won by 10. Those feats do not mean a thing right now and yes, I know it was during the summer when everyone says it doesn’t matter and no one cares about summer ball. But, it does tell me that the Chiefs take every opponent seriously and never take the floor without giving 100% and doing all they can to get better and win the game.
I expect the game tomorrow night to be very competitive and entertaining. Who will win won’t be known until 9pm. Regardless, the community will be proud of what these local youngsters have accomplished. They earned the right to be here, lust like all 32 teams that made the tournament. No one can take that or their record or their ranking from them. They earned it. Let’s just be fans of young athletes who put on one hell of a show. There is a lot of trash talk on here, but I assure you, there is also much respect for the Miller Grove program by Sequoyah fans who know high school basketball. They also know that the team from Sequoyah wanted a chance to be the best they could be and knew that if they got their wish, somewhere along the way they would get a shot at playing Miller Grove and see just how good they could be against the best team in 4A. While we would all like to see it in the championship game, we are equally as happy to see it happen in Hickory Flat in the second round. To the players, it is an opportunity to earn respect, defeat another opponent and move on to the third round of the playoffs. Their ultimate goal is to win a state championship by playing one game at a time.
Should they falter tomorrow night against Miller Grove, they will have completed the season with a 29-1 record, nothing short of remarkable for a program that is in only it’s second state tournament in school history. We are very proud of these boys and wish only the best for them as they try to do what most think is impossible.
As a parent of one of the players on this team, and having seen these kids play together since 5th grade, I could not be more proud of them, their character, their coaches, the heart and determination they play with and their will to win. If they defeat Miller Grove tomorrow, it will be the biggest win in the school’s history. Not because they beat Miller Grove, but because they have never won a second round game. Heck, they have never played a second round game. They are playing for the love of the game and their community and the opportunity they have earned, not been given is one they should be proud of.
Good luck to all the teams as they play their second round games tomorrow night. I hope that everyone enjoys themselves and gets to enjoy one of the greatest games on earth.
Let’s Go Chiefs!

WELL, WELL, WELL…………….There was a guarantee for the last 2 weeks how Bradwell Institute girls were going to run over everyone else in AAAAA. A guarantee that they were going to be at Gwinnett Arena as one of the final 4. Actually looking ahead pass McEachern, North Gwinnett, Campbell and even Norcross. The undefeated (and untested) Lady Tigers lost by 25 pts. in their home gym to McEachern 50-25. By the way region 3-AAAAA didn’t fair well as the #2 team Beach also lost by 27 pts to North Cobb 63-36, which means region 3-AAAAA (girls) is totally out of the tournament. Mind you someone screamed and took over the blogs guaranteeing that these girls will be at the Gwinnett Arena. As I mention before, you have to play and schedule some outside region games against teams you could possibly meet in the playoffs. Even if you lose you get battle tested. You can always go undefeated against sub par teams, but when the tourney starts most of the real tested teams step it up.

@Ray Alexander: I am not a fan of either MGHS or SHS, but I have to say, well said. You put everything into proper perspective. My pick is Miller Grove, I understand their schedule is stronger, but as you also mentioned, Sequoyah plays with heart and the will to win. Lets hope that will to win makes this a competitive game…………good luck! The Bradwell Inst. fan flooded these pages and others with blogs and blogs of guarantee’s, no rhyme or reason so I stopped blogging until now. At least you look at the reality of things, and I understand you must root for your home team, but you also give the other guys proper respect too. Again good luck tomorrow.

There are too many people on here that have no clue. The playoff brackets have been set up since going to the top four teams in each region the same way. The four region teams and other regions play across the same two regions 1-4,2-3 seeded teams. They are seeded as results of how the region championship and the third place and fourth place teams end up on championship night. Sequoyah won the region MG got upset and was seeded no.2 in their region. It just happened that Region 7 No. 1 and Region 6 no. 2 would play in the next game if both won their first. So it happened. If MG had won their region Sequoyah and MG would not have played until the Championship game if both advanced that far. So it is not what the coaches or others place the teams in the brackets it is a well designed playoff that has been a mathematical setup for every Class and every region for any competition.. There is no guessing as to who is no. 1 or 16 as in ncaa invitations. Regions 1-4 play each other Region 5-8 play each other in every classification. As in the Region 5-8, some years region 7-6 play each other and 5-8 play. Other years region 5-6 and 7-8, and 7-5 and 6-8, It is changed on a rotating basis. In the end the 1-4 regions cross over and play the 5-8 winners for the final four. All playoffs are set up ahead of time. The teams just play to be placed in the playoffs as team 1-4 to play another regions 1-4 teams eventually ending in the championship game. Very simple and effective….

Also for all you 5-A southside fans, Every team in the girls south bracket and south of I-20 has been eliminated. The only teams left on that side of the bracket are all from Cobb Co. and all from region 4, which means the southermost regions will not be representing at Gwinnett Arena.

Logistically it is sometimes impossible for some teams to play up or play better teams to improve their ability. It is easy for a Miller Grove team to play a Gwinnett powerhouse team…Just a few miles. How far is it from Bradwell Institute to McEachern…. Will they be able to play home and home boy and girls games with each other to keep their schedule straight. Will the teams in the region 1-4s have opportunities to play teams other than their close immediate surrounding schools. Economically there is an unbalanced situation in scheduling where some teams can play their 14 region games and travel less than 20 miles to play three other teams for a home and home schedule to make up a 20 game regular season schedule. Travel between any region 1-4 has to be enormous compared to any travel between regions 5-8. Then there comes the AAU thing all year long in the tightly confined demography of metro atlanta schools where some teams play together during the summer and are recruited by the top (?) teams (?). Just a curiosity of how good would some of these coaches be if they had to coach a group of kids from a confined area and not recruit nor have them together for AAU teams in the summer. It does not seem to be a true equal chance to become a championship team when you factor such things into the equation. The rich keep getting richer??

@Andre: in every sub-bracket, #1 plays #4 and #2 plays #3. So if #1 wins, they either have to play 2 or 3 in the second round. Now two #1’s can meet in the third round. There is no way around it, would you prefer all the #1’s play each other in round 1.

I understand what you mean about demographic, but south Georgia teams could easily cross over into Florida and schedule games as the coastal teams can easily schedule teams from South Carolina and Florida. As far as demographics, these metro teams have played in S. Carolina, Florida, Alabama and so forth. Which means they have traveled as far or even further for these games.

Joe the only schools up here in the METRO AREA actively recruiting players are Wheeler, Norcross, and the FORSYTH COUNTY(UNBELIEVABLE!!) neighboring school of Milton who would not be able to field a competitive team without recruiting young brothers from South Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton and the TALENT RICH CITY OF ATLANTA. Southeast Atlanta as well as Southwest is loaded with talent from Crawford Long to Price Middle School we just have to keep the TALENTSNATCHERS from the NORTHERN SUBURBS from stealing our players. If you ever visited the communities of Miller Grove, Columbia, Westlake, SWD, or THE MIGHTY SOUTH ATLANTA you would see neighborhoods loaded with BALLPLAYERS. Head north to Milton, EAST COBB(Wheeler), or Norcross and you would smell the STANK’ before you got out of your car! These programs are FILTHY and for some reason they get away with recuiting a whole team full of players. Coach White got in trouble at Carver for 1 player who had been at the school for 2 or 3 years but these 3 schools can openly recruit a starting 5….SOUTH ATLANTA HORNETS 2 TITLES 3Years!!!

@Zone3Cane – Those PARENTS move the kids into the schools that have the most VISIBILITY…no different than parents moving their kids to schools that have stronger academic backgrounds. As a parent, if I believe my child has the talent to play for a Wheeler, Milton, Norcross and can get the NATIONAL EXPOSURE to possibly get recruited by a major college for a scholorship, I’m jumping at the opportunity. Those schools play a national schedule all during the end of November and December and can easily be scouted by major D1 scouts.

@Ray. You know dang well that it wasn’t just all the seniors this year that beat Tyner and Science Hill. That was Deihl’s class doing a lot of the damage. And you know the kid from Tyner was not an All-American unless 3 star big guys are all-americans now?
And don’t go saying that the senior class this year lead SHS to their first state birth last year. Again im pretty sure Deihl was the ring leader that lead the team in scoring and another senior was the 2nd or 3rd leading scorer.
As for the game Wednesday, I think it will be difficult for Sequoyah to compete. They might hang around for a while, but playing 6 players is not gonna beat Miller Grove. And I dont know if Tate’s eurostep is going to work against 6′8 guys that block shots. They stand straight up with their arms up and they are blocking that shot nearly every time. And I’m pretty sure they have the athletes and speed to match up with Tate. Brooks is 6′7 and guarded Dai-Jon from Milton and held him to 7. I think he might be able to check Tate if thats what Sharman wants. If Tate doesn’t go off for a huge game, this one can get ugly quick. Sequoyah is only shooting 37% as a team this year and thats not playing against bigger and faster guys like MG has. The writing is on the wall for sure. But if Sequoyah some how finds a way to pull it out, than it’s hard to see anyone beating them for state.

Like I said about the Sequoyah boy’s team. Maybe you guy’s need to schedule the better atl metro team’s on your schedule during the season or during the Christmas tournament’s so it’s not so overwhelming come play-off time. Until next year………

Well the problem I got is the open recruit of coaches. I dont mind if a family moves into a district in play. But if u dont move I got a problem with that. Or if you move and never have to sit out a year. Just follow the rules and if you want to change school, I think u got to follow the rules and sit one year instead of playing. Now, I use to work in Dekalb and alot coaches will shall I say persuade a player to play with them. If not the coach, but someone connected. Players are being recruited in Dekalb too. Its SOME shady AAU coaches that are connected. U cant see the gold for the trash thats out in there in sports. So I think its ok to transfer, but not RECRUIT!!!

@coach1 Ok Coach if you know the rules then you know that if a player moves into a school zone, that is a (family unit move) then they do not have to site out a year. That would be like punishing the family for moving. Moving from Conyers to alpharetta is no different from moving from Texas to Atlanta in the eyes of the GHSA. As long as your family unit has moved. It is actually against the rules for a Coach to recruit, but what do you call recruiting. What would it be considered if a kid who lives in Rockdale county, feels that he is good enough to play in Alpharetta, and his family moves to that schools attendance zone. When he shows up to school or to try outs, is the coach suppose to say hey you can’t play here?
Also as far as the AAU, every GREAT player in GA, lets say top 100 in GA, plays for one of the power house AAU teams in Metro Atlanta, thats from Valdosta to Dalton. ALll (well 90%) the top 100 either played for the 1. Atlanta Celtics
2. GA stars
3. Southern Kings (by the way the kings Administrator/Coach Morris has destroyed)
4. World Wide
5. GA blazers
So the players/parents talk to each other alll summer and convience each other to come play together. So how do you suggest regulating kids moving from one school to another. Of the top schools in the Metro atlanta area there are very few kids on the rosters this year that were not there last year, only two boys i can think of would be one a Milton and one SWD. but these both were legitimate moves, oh and Columbia. You better believe that once you have a talented team and are ranked nationaly and/or Statewide, the GHSA is looking at transfers. The last thing they want is to be embarrassed on the National media.

So looks like MGHS and Coach white has some home grown talent as well. Lights OUT Sequoyah, looks like they will be filing out of the WarLodge before the fourth quarter starts maybe at the half. @reclass….< Dont take it personal. Some kids never move into the district. Thats why I say if a kids family moves into that district. I mean the rules are the rules. if u transfer like in COLLEGE you have to sit out a year. Sorry no excuses. There are coaches that openly recruit. Please read previous blogs. I am not bitter or show hate. I just believe in being honest. If you are fortunate enough to get kids at your school the honest way, then so be it. But when I kids is recruited and I mean the AJC and other kids know there are so kids not actually moving, then I think its not fair. If you are good, they will find you. I mean do right and when STATE Tournament comes you wont have the lopsided victories or repeating championships. If you are a great coach then u dont have to recruit. if you are a great player, make your other teammates better. I love to see how these so called AAU players pan out in real life. Funny, how only a few are actually doing well in college. I mean their game is actually growing. So please read my blog and think before you call me out. Because I can actually go there with you.

rudbuck, sportsfan31313 is probably still walking around in a daze after that unbeaten BI team got whipped so bad in their own gym by a #3 seed. Sounds like it was way worse than the score indicated. I think all of us should support our teams but that doesn’t mean we have to make wild predictions like 31313 did.
Clearly these region 4 teams are on another level from their opposition from regions 3 and 1- all won by at least 25 and now they get to play the region 4 tournament all over again.

Chiefs go get them! You only need to be better one time, not three, not five or seven. Just one win. Chiefs have nothing to lose tonight. Most fans dont expect them to win. Play hard and play with pride. Never flinch. Never back down. Never show fear. Regardless of score play with pride and intensity. You guys have made the community and school proud. By the way, the kids can not pick who they played. They just beat everyone that showed up. By the way for history, when fans see the banner in the gym or discuss the perfect season, they will not remember who they played or they barely won this game or that game. Those type of things fade with time. They will remember the record and region title and state tourney run.
“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” Matthew 17:20

@metro ATL: Probably wont hear from sporsfan31313 again til next year, when we go through the same thing all over again. Yes, it is good to back your team, but you have to be realistic. The team I root for won a big game in round one, and now face a tougher opponent, but I keep it real, it is going to be tough, real tough. If they win I’ll be ecstatic and continue to pull for them, but I’m not making bold predictions.
As far as all the recruiting blogs, which blows up during this time of year, lets give it a break. When I moved here from New York my criteria was a nice home, a good education for my son and daughter, and a school that could compete in several sports. That is exactly what I did and did my homework. I didn’t land where I am accidently. My son played a a very good school that competed all 4 years he was there and my daughter played softball and ran track with the best Georgia had to offer. As a parent, what is wrong with that. This is basically what most parents here are doing, if you are ready for a move, why not move somewhere nice, where your kid is going to get some exposure, it’s a no brainer.

Zone3canE, man I want to pass the collection plate on that one!!!! What really happened to Dunwoody!!! I really like South Atlanta. I hated what favors went through. But I wish him luck. I think SA is an underrated team and they are are really not respected. I love to see Rockdale, SA, SWD play. I guess Thurs will be a good day. Dont know about MG- SEQ game. I am guessing this wil be a great game. High basketball corrupt or not is the best!!! I wish all the guys and coaches must success tonight. I pray the game will be played with intergrity and the FANS just be FANS!!!

For the record I never ever said anything STUPID like JJ Hickson WASN’T BORN IN MARIETTA, I said something SMART and TRUTHFUL like HE NEVER LIVED IN MARIETTA(EAST COBB) like 90% of all the player’s who have put on a Wheeler jersey over the last 15 years. I know it’s hard for WheelerFraud2 to be TRUTHFUL about the SHADY EAST COBB SCHOOL he supports, but please be TRUTHFUL ABOUT MY QUOTES!! SOUTH ATLANTA HORNETS REAL TALENT, REAL TEAM!! Wheeler, Milton, and Norcross=FUGAZI.

Coach 1, this response is not solely based on this particular blog. I am an educator as well and have been for the last 12 years but I refrain from exposing or making accusations that contained no solid evidence because in this game it’s all based on what you can prove. (black & white) You appear to know more than the average basketball fan including high school bball and AAU alike.
I am all for doing things the right way and understand completely that if moves are verifiable and done properly by all means allowing the opportunity to play.
What I don’t agree with are the false accusations of illegal recruiting and in every blog you make these allegations but never release names you wait for someone else to do that for you. High School Basketball must certainly be cleaned up not only by the school, parents, and coaches but also by GHSA so that all the false accusations can cease once and for all. I definitely know there are illegal transfer you would have to blind not to see that.
By no means can you call me out you make the same remark on every blog mainly for attention or are you questioning if anyone else realize this about the same team regardless of the reason you should get a life!!! Who am I?? you ask Yes, I am a woman but you made no implication of that because maybe you don’t think woman can talk basketball but when you have 6 boys and a husband sports pretty much becomes your life. I am also particularly close to a program that you have made negative remarks about on more than one occasion. This is no “hit dog will holla” this is mother protecting what she has also rightfully work hard to build.
It is pretty obvious that you are not a coach based on your bias remarks that’s why I suggest a bitter parent not making the implications everyone on these blogs are male and that is what your actions and words suggest.
All forgiven you know not what you speak about, no need to ignore me I will not be responding to your ignorance again.

I agree with the comment made by SWD Panthers. You cannot play against inferior teams and expect to win the championship. Look at Stephenson girls team. Regional champs and they lose in the first round.

Sorry BB fan, u cant honestly say there are no illegal recruiting done in Ga. I dont care if u male or female, blk or white. it is what it is. I really dont care about your gender. Because if I say he, its stands for both until corrected. What if i knew more than you. U said 100%, I said different. Why would I faslely say something other people hear are saying. Come on, Man!! Sorry, let me explain. That was Chris Carter. How could anyone support courruption. All I am saying again, I have NO PROBLEM WITH TRANSFERS AS LONG AS THE FOLLOW THE RULES BY GHSA!!!! PLEASE READ THE LAST LINE AND U CANT TELL ME WHAT TO TYPE? THIS IS AMERICA RIGHT. WE CAN EXPRESS OURSELVES ANYWAY WE CAN. I DONT SEE YOU WRITING ABOUT PEOPLE CONDEMING VICK, BIG BEN OR ANYONE ELSE.
