Most intriguing quarterfinal? Start with Wheeler vs. Norcross

Let’s update this blog for the quarterfinals. Miller Grove beat Sequoyah fairly easily Tuesday in our ”most intriguing” second-round game.

I’m sitting in Fort Valley waiting for Fayette County to tip it off against Lovejoy in one of the top QF games of the weekend. Eager to watch Adam Smith, one of the state’s premier scorers. This should be a good one.

On Saturday, the top game is Norcross vs. Wheeler at West Georgia. These are the only teams in AAAAA that can challenge Milton. There, I said it. Not sure I’m going out on a limb with that.

Speaking of good QF’s, I see that Kentavious Caldwell scored 40 in Greenville’s 2-point win over Wilcox County, the team I picked to win Class A. Nick Marshall had 16.

As far as girls go, I don’t think there’s a better team in Georgia than Fayette County. Just saw them hammer Warner Robins. hard to defend a 6-4 post w/ skill, plus a UConn signee. The sophomore PG is smooth. We need an all-clas tournament.

OK, got to go. Smith just hit a 3 at the first-quarter buzzer. Fayette leads 17-14.

Anybody talking about Roswell beating Berkmar? Roswell? 4 seed? Is Gwinnett down that much this year? Norcross has 9 losses. U of Milton punished Roswell, West Forsyth punished Roswell the next night, then they beat Berkmar?

win, lose or draw..the young men on the Sequoyah Chiefs will go onward in their life as WINNERS and will have many great memories of how any average group of basketball players have EXCEEDED everyone’s expectations…it is too bad all Sequoyah basketball players live in the school area..Sequoyah unlike many schools south of Canton can NOT recruit basketball players from outside their school area…Our players are Home Grown…kinda makes me think of the movie Hoosier

Bubba, keep in my these are the same schools that parents and students alike want to be accepted into.

This is not a ME attitude these guys evidentally have worked very hard considering the GPA that is worthy of such schools even looking their way.

I commend these fellas!!!!

Do I think all the attention is necessary no, and do i think they perform for the attention no ,but nor is the amount of exposure they receive is either.

I do THINK US CITY FOLKS get it we instill hard work in our children and it pays off I am sure MG, Milton, Wheeler and Norcross don’t call up the AJC and invite them to games for a cover story so that is somthing you would totally have to take up with the AJC.

You Sequoyah retards that keep referencing Hoosiers and homegrown do realize that makes absolutely no sense other then both teams are WHITE. Milan High School in Hoosiers did not have home grown kids, they had transfers if you know the real story.

Sequoyah is about to get destroyed, they had a patty cake schedule.

Miller Grove has to keep in mind one very important detail. Where are the refs from who will do the game? Get a crew from north of SHS, and the outcome could be too close for MG’s comfort. I’ve seen TP get away with alot of stuff with metro refs, but I wonder about some crew from Jasper.

BI needed a last-second shot to get past a 4 seed from a weak region at home. No film review? Did the BI coaches think they had the Lowndes game in the bag? I was expecting a 30 point beatdown out of the “undefeated #1 team” in AAAAA against an opponent like Lowndes.

Hope Bradwell coaches watched film for their next opponent- they have a load of talent, a load of height AND a load of speed”.

Metro ATL,

Well this is the Tournamanet,,,, The Fact that Bradwell did’nt win by 30 points is no accord. Remember Lowndes were top ranked at the beginning of the season. It was an exciting defensive game with people on their feet cheering for both teams. You are sadly misten if you really think that they should have lost by 30 points. I don’t believe no team at this point will blow anyone out by 20 or more points. If you think that, then you are sadly misten…..

We all know about how high and mighty and the “tradition” of Miller Grove basketball, but Sequoyah beat Chattahoochee twice this season(oh, who by the way, has been ranked in the top 10 all season) and the 2 other teams in their region that made the playoffs. They also beat Pope, who made the playoffs. So what’s this about not beating anybody? We have a 6′3″ kid who plays like 6′8″, and isn’t scared of nobody, and a 5′8″ point guard who can out ball handle most 6′+ guards in region AAAA. So Miller Grove, just bring it, your coming to our house, The WAR LODGE, and I expect it to be a great game, not a blowout. GO CHIEFS!!

Didn’t know Miller Grove was in THE CITY, but it’s all good! I got love 4 Miller Grove please don’t lump yourselves in with the TALENTSNATCHERS of Wheeler, Norcross, and Milton who couldn’t field a competitive team without openly recruiting players from DeKalb, South Fulton, and the TALENT RICH CITY OF ATLANTA. South Atlanta 2 state titles in 3 years. Yeahhh!!!!

Is it possible that the AJC could at least publish the times and locations of the playoff games in the area? I don’t really care about a slam dunk contest, we need more discussion on the teams and the games.

Millier grove might be suprised, that little guard from sequoyah is no joke and may cause the big 3 from miller grove alot of bench time with foul trouble. Sequoyah had a good season and squeaked by with an undefeated season and this should be recognized. If they or any other cobb or cherokee county team recruited and brought in top notch players from around the state, then they also would have a big front court. Milton has already recruited 6 kids from other counties for next yrs team.

People keep thinking SWD win over MGHS was a fluke, but it wasn’t because SWD has some ballplayers. If the REFS let the players play Wed. SHS will get blowed out by MGHS. From looking at their schedule they had problems with some cupcakes teams. I don’t see any team that can play in 6AAAA that they played against this year. I thought Cedar Shoals had a good team and look at the outcome MGHS bust 102 on them.

yeah sequoyah is the number one team… BUT they shouldnt be.. strenght of schedule for that region sucks.. i keep reading that they beat cass and chatt and them teams stil in the playoffs.. after wednesday that division will be put to rest. Miller Grove, Southwest Dekalb and Rockdale will each win by 15 or more points. all games will be done at halftime. trust me.

@tru blue i dont know who told you cedar shoals had a good team but they lied.. they suck,, the only teams in that region that played good teams all year was Heritage (who should have beat Southwest) and Rockdale( played a national schedule- only 6 of their games were played against teams not ranked. cedar shoals aint been good since 03-04 lol but i will say this much.. if any team has a chance to pull a upset wednesday it will be in the SOUTHWEST vs CHATT game.!!! lol

Why be so personal chiefsupporter? Basketball is game of matchup. The coach who can exploit the most weakness win. This will come down to a guard play vs the bigs. Mg experience will be determining factor also. Let us leave the personal character issue of out this game, because at the end of the day is only just a game. My perception of chief supporter is that any who broadcast another people flaws has very poor character also. The MG coach is certifield now that is what matter and is fine educator. The kids has a good person that cares about them as people. What else can you ask for?

Going into the 2nd round, all 4 of 2 AAAAA teams are still here. I wish all of these teams luck to make it to the Elite 8. That would be like playing a second regional tournament. Langston Hughes, Newton, Stephenson, Westlake. Langston going to the Ship.

Good Luck in the 2nd Round.

Hey Just Sayin,

Langston is garbage, that team has no semblance of an offense whatsoever. If Harrison would have actually came out to play it wouldn’t have been close. Harrison was up by double digits and couldn’t shoot the freakin ball. Langston scored 3 points in the 1st quarter. Had like 17 at the half. LOL. Both teams looked awful and Langston surprisingly won even after looking worse, I’ve never seen a team with a bunch of kids who can’t handle the ball, it was like they were playing hot potato.

@zac classification is determined by school size, not by teams choice. A team can elect to play up, but every sport would have to move up, and i am sure MG baseball, football, or anyother sports doesnt wants to play AAAAA, sure basketball doesn’t either because of the tradition built around playing the tuckers,SWD ect.

All talk aside, what a great atmosphere it will be in Hickory Flat on Wednesday night, with a 7pm tip, I would there no later than 6:30. Miller Grove is a great team, no Sequoyah fan is taking that away from them. Were just asking you to give our kids a chance. They are just a bunch of good kids that play the game the right way, and have HUGE HEARTS and a WILL to WIN that cannot be measured. Quit hating on the kids for doing the right thing. The bottom line so far is that they have lined up 29 times, and won all 29 games. Miller Grove will get its greatest challenge yet, make no doubt about that. What a great build up, to what will be a great game, I can think of no place I would rather be.

@ChiefsBacker – MGs guys also play the game the right way. I look forward to a well played contest between both teams. One that maybe a little closer than people expect. It will be interesting to see if Thomas Marshall can manage to give Sean Tate fits in the back court. As far as giving your kids a chance…They certainly do have their chance, tomorrow night at 7pm. It should be fun

I’ve been to a few of Sequoyah’s games. I’m not a fan and no family goes there. First of all, it’s an exciting crowd, they fill the gym up. The community is into it and it’s a big deal coming from almost 20 years of losing teams. They are not big as mentioned. Their guard Tate might be 5′7″. He is very quick and not afraid to go to the hole. He could get somebody in foul trouble. He’s aces from the stripe. He’s a lefty and I think this throws defenders off a bit. He has a nice J and can hit 3’s as long as you give him space. IMO, if you stop him, you are going to win. The other 4 are decent players and play well together. They are good on the boards for their size and they don’t make a lot of mistakes. In the games I watched, they were losing at various points in the game, so they know how to persevere and overcome. They won’t back down for sure, no matter who or how big the team is they play. It’s correct to say they don’t have depth as they sub maybe 1 guy in. MGHS obviously good as advertised…. don’t know anything about them other than what’s been mentioned. I think the key for both teams will be to stay out of foul trouble. It’ll be interesting to see how the refs call this one…… the 1 and 2 teams in the state, it should be a barn burner!

Any team can be beatne on any given day. People dont realize that. If MG loses everyone will have excuses. Just the team that wins wins. Give them credit. I understand all the MG so called fans. But the other team is problably the overall better team and not an AAU team. And I am not scared to say that to any other coach before the haters come out.

Watch it dusty roads I saw two of MG coaches here again on Saturday & that’s not the first time I’ve witnessed them peepin around the War Lodge! I’m sure they have gotten some film on us as well considering all those we’ve defeated this season.

So I hear all these bad remarks about one coach being better than the other but I also know they’ve been watching us and not just 1 game.

But nonetheless my boys will be ready.

rudbuck

A LITTLE INFO…………..As to the statement that at this point, this is the playoffs and there should be no 20+ blowouts. FACT: Just on the boys side of the tournament in Rounf 1, there were at least 25 games that were won by more than 20 points. Of those 25, there were five 30+ blowouts, three 40+ blowouts and even one 53 point blowout. With the 2 biggest blowouts being Columbia by 53 and Miller Grove by 49. I guess that just shows that if you are good enough to make the show, it doesn’t mean that you are that great of a team. I still say strength of schedule against other ranked and national teams (win or lose) makes you more battle tested and ready for when it really counts, RIGHT NOW! And as the tourney progresses, alot of these pretenders will not be coming out of their hole to blog, and instead of having all this “tic” for “tac” maybe we will get back to talking some real High School basketball
