Metro Atlanta teams won all 10 state basketball championships in 2010. Don’t expect another sweep, but most of the champions in this year’s tournament – which begins Friday – should be from the metro area again.
Below are my predictions for the semifinals and the eventual champion.
Milton (AAAAA), Miller Grove (AAAA), Columbia (AAA) and Greater Atlanta Christian (AA) are clear favorites in the boys draws, although SWD’s win over Miller Grove in the 6-AAAA final opens the door in AAAA. The hardest to pick in Class A, where defending champion Wesleyan, runner-up Whitefield Academy, No. 1-ranked Wilkinson County and No. 2 Greenville are top contenders along with my pick, Wilcox County, led by Nick Marshall.
With the girls, Wesleyan (A) is a virtual lock.
The others are much harder to establish a team to beat. Norcross is the defending champion but had to avenge two losses to North Gwinnett to win Region 7-AAAAA.
In AAA, Columbia is No. 1 but lost to St. Pius in its region final.
In AA, a Buford-Kendrick final would be pretty special.
The AAAA girls draw is the most unpredictable. With No. 1 Chamblee falling in the region, it’s open to many contenders.
BOYS
AAAAA: Harrison vs. Norcross, McEachern vs. Milton
Winner – Milton
AAAA: Jonesboro vs. Miller Grove, Fayette County vs. SW DeKalb

AAA: Eagle’s Landing vs. Columbia, Monroe vs. Carrollton

AA: Laney vs. South Atlanta, Thomasville vs. Greater Atlanta Christian

@Todd SWD is the #1 seed out of 6 AAAA so they would face fayette if they both made it to the final four. I also don’t think MGHS is a lock. SWD has played them tough the last 2 meetings & SWD won the last meeting and lead almost the whole game. I think SWD will shock everyone & win 4A.

It will be a ATL Sweep in the Boys State Tournament if you have been following the boys side as you say you have then you would have listed the Class A boys Champion prediction with Whitefield Academy as the Champion and not Wilcox county Whitefield academy beat Wilcox county with Nick Marshall with the score of Won 93-76 at Wilcox. Whitefield is proven over and over again to be one of the best team in regardless of class if you go to the Massey rankings who ranks the top teams in the country http://WWW.Highschoolsports.net the have the rankins for the best teams in the state. In the Class AA you would have listed South Atlanta as the Champion. A loss in the region does not determine the Championship. But that is why the play the game.

There is a lot of basketball to be played before it will become clear who the semifinal 5-AAAAA teams will be. But I will take a high level stab at it anyway.
Of course Milton should be there but they really haven’t had to play any talented teams to win the region championship. We will just have to wait and see if this lack of competition will have a negative effect on them.
On the other side of what I call the north metro brackets, Norcross and Wheeler should have to beat the other to be in the semifinals. I don’t know how Wheeler is playing but Norcross is playing with a lot more confidence that they had when they played Wheeler earlier in the season and lost by only 5 pts at Wheeler’s gym. So my money is on one of the two teams. However spoilers could come from Walton or Peachtree Ridge.
As far as for the other two teams, Jenkins, Harrison or McEachern all could end up as one of the other two semifinal teams. However the highest probably goes with Harrison and McEachern both two solid teams. Outside spoilers might be Vadosta or even Savannah.

Fixed the SWD/Miller Grove thing. The GaSports draws had those backward, and I should’ve noticed since SWD is the #1 seed.
Coach O – I know I’m going out on a limb w/ Wilcox. Hard to bet against Whitefield, but if we based it strictly on who beat who, then Greenville or Wilkinson would be the favorite. G’ville beat Whitefield.

I’ve seen Norcross and Wheeler late in the season. Both are better than they were beginning the year. Norcross has finally settled down and started to play team ball, Wheeler is finally getting good point guard play out of Derek Evans. I’d say it’s a toss-up as to who would win. My opinion though is that those two teams present the best hope at beating Milton. Milton thrashed McEachern earlier this year, and Harrison just doesn’t have the guard play to begin to challenge Scott and Parker. Yes, Wheeler lost by 18 to milton earlier this year, but they had it down to 6 with 6 minutes to go and hit nothing from outside all night. The only reason Wheeler got back in the game early in the 4th is because Chuck owns Royal down on the blocks (who doesn’t want to be a true post player). IF, big if, Wheeler’s guards play like they are capable of, meaning Evans is controlling offensive flow and limiting TO’s and KK is knocking down 3’s like he usually does (although he struggled to convert his open looks against Milton in January), Wheeler can give Milton a run for their money. Same can be said for Norcross. Norcross brings the size, length, and athleticism that could give Milton fits, but it comes down to how their guards manage the game and if they knock down enough jumpers to keep milton honest on defense.
Regardless, somebody please beat Milton! Please, just so I can laugh at the ajc’s year long obsession with them.

MGHS-3 RINGS sounds like classic case of making an excuse for a loss. So let me get this straight ……..if Miller Grove ever loses a game it’s because they are not in the building and not because a team just beat them on the court. I got it now!!!!!!!! Anybody can be beat…. especially when it’s a region game and both the team’s are familiar with each other. It would have been cool if you would’ve just gave SWD congrat’s for the win and hope you meet them again in the finals. Until next time…….

Todd – I saw the Wilcox – Whitfield game in Tifton during the holidays. I would want our neighbors from Wilcox to do well but Whitfield is clearly much better. The difference is not talent but coaching. Whitfield is relentless on pressure defense and Marshall and company did not handle the pressure well. At one point marshall took a cheap shove at a little Whitfield guard when the sides were going to their benches for a time-out.

I will not get a chance to see Chamblee girls play in this year’s event due to their loss to Miller Grove in OT. Great things were written and said about this squad. I was told that two of the starters were sick and a third starter was suffering from a knee injury. To make matters worse, I heard that a fourth starter twisted her ankle in the first quarter of the region play. Region 6 is the TOUGHEST region in Class AAAA and probably the entire state for GIRLS. This varsity squad had to play like CHAMPIONS all season to go undefeated in this region. Now, they have to watch other teams compete for regions champs. Chamblee Girl – YOU DESERVE MORE!

SWD– the stall out was mo representation of McKinney MG was not going to allow that, the stall out @ SWD was a reflection of poor coaching. There is no way that would have happened @ MG.& t was purely to get the refs out the game, Saturday night they let the boys play and SWD played harder and came out with a victory.

region 4AAAA may be the toughest region in Girls Basketball. Forest Park ranked # 3 is one of the best teams I’ve seen all year, had to go to overtime to defeat North Clayton. From top to bottom Forest Park is too talented and they should win the state championship. North Clayton is a solid team too especially with # 42 and #32. Lovejoy has pick it up late, #23 is one of the best defenders in the state, and they will defeat Statesboro on Friday. But the sleeper team is Munday’s Mill. After graduating All-State pt guard, their second leading scorer, and hiring a new head coach, Munday’s Mill beat #4 Redan at Redan, and we all know that Redan hasn’t lost at home in nearly three years. Watch out for region 4AAAA. They will win all of their first round games.

W/E: I’m going to give you another reason to laugh if somebody beats Milton. I GUARANTEE a state championship. There, now I aqm fair game if it doesn’t happen. Now, all that aside, I was at the Milton/wheller game. Wheeler was outclassed. It did get interesting a few times, but when Milton kicked into its gear there was no comparison. I also saw the Milton Norcross game early in the year. While I think the score was a comfortable margin, I never could get comfortable with the game. Something about Norcross scares me on a “given night”. Also, W/E, I will admit Chuck owns Julian – last year and this year. He is an interesting speciman. Very agile and athletic for his considerable size. Not Barkley agile, but along those lines.

This team is ranked #3 in the state and 2 of their 5 losses have been to teams in Ga, Westlake and Norcross. This team played in 2 national tournaments in Myrtle Beach and Naples Fl. This team is averaging over 65 pts a game and only giving up a little over 30 a game. Oh and by the way they have a McDonald’s All-American on their team as well as a 6′4” psot player who is going to South Carolina to play ball. No one from outside the metro Atlanta area is going to come close. And the Legend is from south Georgia and would be tickled to death to have some champions from there.
Undefeated Bradwell girls will wilt at the first or second metro team they see. Laney and Wilcox boys may make the final four. Lanier County boys might even make the elite eight, but the foreigners on their roster can’t match up with metro private schools.
Thomasville boys and girls will make it a couple of rounds before riding into the sunset. Kendrick girls will make the final four, but even their undefeated seasons don’t carry the weight they did a couple of years ago.

Legend Of Len Barker,
Bradwell Institute will indeed be at the Gwinette Center playing for the State Title. They will systemactically dismantle all of these over-rated Metro Atlanta teams in Class AAAAA one by one. The funny thing is (and I laugh at it) that Metro Atlanta Critics always say that the Champions Of Region 3-AAAAA palys in a weak Region and is not tested. They say it in Football and Region 3-AAAAA Camden County has dominated them each time up until this past fall. Now you have Bradwell Institute is the ONLY undefeated Class AAAAA ladies Basketball team at 28-0, and they are saying the same old mess as well. But in the Christmas Tournament back in December 2010 Bradwell Institute convincingly beat a Region 8-AAAA Rockdale in Metro Atlanta. Bradwell Institute will be at the Gwinette Center playing for the State Title. Go Tigers…………………:-)

I’m rooting for you, Bradwell, but something’s changed. When I saw Vidalia rocked last year, I realized non-metro schools have zero chance … for now. Perhaps in a few years. But the days of the Lowndes girls, Clinch boys, Westover boys, and Hart County girls are currently over.
Metro schools operate on a completely different plane now.

Rockdale County is a politicians Metro area. Their population doesn’t even count towards the metro area population. The Original counties are Fulton, Cobb, Gwinnett, Dekalb and Clayton. The other 28 added over the years are actually Atlanta region counties, which is their way of being included. The heart of the Metro is the 5 counties. But if Rockdale is as close as you get………..Hahaha!
And if I stand correcte, it was you that said not to go on past history of a school, so no more from you about how Beach did what they did for eight years. As far as Camden County football, I believe they are a powerhouse in footnall in the state of Georgia, just like the Lowndes and Valdosta’s,, but football is on a completely different level in Georgia. We are talking basketball here and it seems the level switches to the metro area. Most teams here have played anywhere between 5 to 10 games against ranked teams here in Georgia and nationally. So wake up, you can’t take away that these teams are battle tested. I don’t understand you not looking at the facts. If your claim of BI beating Rockdale is your only claim, please look at all the others strength of schedule. I mean wow, in region 8-AAAAA, salem had their only region win against Rockdale, not even best in the region and definitely not a top 10 team. You are so wrapped up on BI that you don’t want to see past BI. I am looking at the big picture, all the teams. Well good luck ahead, will not hear a peep from me til the tournament, gets under way and at least the 2nd round.

Rudbuck,
I can see the Big Picture. That is looking at ll the teams be it North Georgia or South Georgia. I see that you apparntly don’t ook at the South Georgia teams or you under estimate them. To say that the Metro Atlanta Teams are so much better than the South Georgia Teams is not fact but by opinion. In addition, it seems to me that you all pick and choose for your benefit as to who is considered the Atlanta Metro Area. If Rockdale was winning, your speech would be a bit different. You can say that Rockdale is not an Atlanta Metro Area Team, but it is the next County South Neighboring Dekalb. I also hear a lot of fans speak about Newton County incuding the AJC and that is South Of Roackdale County who neighbors them. So it is all empty talk when speaking about the geographical locations in Metro Atlanta. I also see that you failed to mention Douglas County which is also in the Atlanta Metro Area as well. Maybe it’s because they are not winning as you wish they were. But again, as you stated previously, ” Let it be decided on the hardwood”.

Rockdale, Douglas are all one of those 28 counties I mentioned, thank you. I also didn’t mention Carroll, Pickens, Bartow, Barrow, Gainsville, Dawson, Forsyth and 21 other counties, but I see you have no mentin of that. And quote me I would not be rooting for Rockdale County at any time. I mentioned that I acknowledge south football teams as being Ga. powerhouses. If Bradwell played a few teams in the top 10 or nationally ranked teams, I would be arguing for Bradwell as well. If Cartersville played a stron schedule, I would mention them too and so on. The one team I do root for, I admit will be bumped in 1st or 2nd round, if they get pass that I will be surprised ( and they are in North Ga.) Don’t put words in my mouth, as I do look at all the brackets, south and north and look at the records. If you notice I had to look to know the kind of teams they play. I have yet hear you mention or acknwoledge any team and the type of schedule they play. All you mention is Rockdale who also plays a weak schedule and even loss to trhe worst team in their region, I looked. I keep a open mind, I don’t care where you come from in the state. Now a team like Milton boys, who beat Winter Park, Fl twice, Oak Hill Academy when they were top 10 in the nation and the Hill was #1. They only lost to #1 MGHS from 4A and the #1 team in the country St. Patrick of NJ. Now a team like this has to get some props, and all this and it won’t be an easy road to the title either. You look at the Norcross girls, and you cannot tell me BI played better teams or even near the total number of teams in the state tourney that Norcross played. If you are going to say anything say something about those facts. Of course you’ll sing and dance around it and comeback with more BI stuff, or north and south stuff, or county to county stuff, but I see no facts, it’s all in black and white, look at both schedules and tell me different.

No boys or girls basketball team outside of metro ATL has won a AAAAA title. Ever. That is fact, not opinion. In AAAA the past decade, the only non-metro ATL title winners are Dougherty boys, Griffin boys and Glen Hills girls. Another fact.
0 out of 10, 0 out of 10, 2 out of 10 and 1 out of 10 tells me the gap is giant in the two highest classifications. That, of course, is just opinion…others are free to live in their “that ain’t so bad” little dream worlds.

Doesn’t hurt that only two of eight AAAAA regions are non-metro. If Chatham County schools would own up to this not being 1975, there’d likely be just one. In AAAA, three of eight aren’t metro. (In AAA it’s 6 of 8 non, AA is 7 of 8, and A 7 of 9.)
Not arguing the dominance, but there aren’t many huge schools outside of the metro area. Even Columbus and Macon have finally given up the ghost.

Glad to see folks here that are sticking to the facts. I agree with you LOLB, the real metro schools are bigger and have a bigger pool to pull from. I could probably say that my NYC H.S. graduating class is bigger than some of these schools in the outer regions. I’m not picking on the outer schools, I’m like you, sticking to the facts. I mean if one of those southernmost schoosl, would cross the street and play some of the strong FL. schools, win or lose, I would consider them a stronger school, because they played and got battle tested. They would definitely get my props.

fayette county boys have a good team.. they beat rockdale boys earlier this year BUT rockdale was without their leading scorer in that agme and they only lost by 3. southwest dekalb will not make it. they could possibly get upset by a heritage team in the 1st round.. i like miller grove vs lovejoy and rockdale vs fayette in the final four.. and in 5a newton is being mentioned but has anyone mentioned the schedule they played.. the only ranked team they had was rockdale , 1st meeting they won in ot and 2nd meeting rockdale had them down by 3 at one point in the game.. overrated newton county is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Mike I know you haven’t seen SWD play because if you had you wouldn’t make such a statement. SWD beat two teams in MGHS and Tucker(twice) and those two teams beat rockdale handedly. This is not the SWD teams of the past. Rudbuck, Mike, Panther Paw, Newton County,
You all have me smiling. You are right. I am speaking from the heart just as you all are too. You may be right witrh your comments about Bradwell institute. The truth is that some of the schools in the Metro Atlanta Area are larger than a lot of the South Georgia Schools. Remember Georgia has 159 Counties. The largest State land wise East Of the Mississippi River. Georgia has a lot of very small counties. I also agree that because of the larger schools, you have a larger pool of talent to pull from. However; I am telling you, don’t allow the national notoriety of the teams you play fool you. As I say again, Bradwell Institute would not be Number 1 in Class AAAAA if they did not deserve to be. I said it before, and I will say it again. Like it or don’t like it. All Roads will lead to Bradwell Institute to get to the Gwinette Center for the Class AAAAA Championship. But then again, as I too agree with Rudbuck. I will let the game be decided on the hardwood.

Needless to say you mentioned those school names matter-of- factly.
Those are some strong accusations and if you think that the state is not watching all the mentioned teams mainly MG and Milton don’t be so sure. Once you make it nationally the State is all over you especially when these accusations have been presented against involved coaches previously. I do not beleive that either if these two coaches are that STUPID!!!

Panther Pride, be careful, if you look at the roster for MG in particular all of those kids have spent thier entire 4 years at MGHS. So no recruiting scandle there, i am sure the coach has learned his lesson from CARVER days and sitting out 2years ago! I give SWD pleanty of props for beating Miller Grove, i was at the game and finally saw MR. Price show up for a big game, if Mr. Goodwin had come to play they may have beaten Miller grove by 20. Check your roster before you ask others to check, remember Mr. Price started out at Columbia, went to Tennessee and is now back at SWD? The recruiting issue is really null in the Atlanta area, since in Dekalb a kid can move up or down panola road and based of the number be at MillerGrove, SWD, or Martin Luther King. Plus parents with apartments and not homes make it easy to move. I congradulate SWD and look at 3 region 6AAAA teams making it to the Elite 8, maybe 4 if Chamblee can beat Rockdale. It could be a region 6AAAA tournament again with Tucker vs Mg, and SWD vs. Chamblee.

RudBuck,
The Bradwell Institute / Lowndes game was a tough one. It was a defensive game between the two. Bradwell Institute was truly tested last night with Region 1-AAAAA Lowndes. The Road For The Title will only get tougher from here. I do believe that the Competition is tougher in North Georgia after watching this game and watching North Georgia Teams in the early season. However; I still believe that the No. 1 Bradwell Institute will be at the Gwinette Center this year.

BRADWELL INSTITUTE 41, LOWNDES COUNTY 39
“Freshman point guard Shaquoia Crockett drove the lane, and sank a floater with about 6 seconds left to break a tie, and lift top-ranked Bradwell to victory in the first round of the GHSA Class AAAAA tournament. The Tigers (29-0) will host McEachern of Powder Springs on Tuesday, tentatively at 6 p.m., in the second round. Friday’s game was tied at 23 at halftime, with Bradwell leading by one point after three quarters before Lowndes (21-8) tied the game at 39. Senior guard Mariah Maternik led Bradwell with 19 points”.

Panther Pride I totally agree with you regarding the cheating. My nephew plays AAU basketball with several MGHS guys and I can beat a million dollars that 4 of them are in school out of area. It is what it is. I don’t think it would be place to report this to GHSA, because I’m not a sports investigator, I just know what I know. The fact of the matter is, this has become a parent/coach show. If that’s what they have to do to win, then go for it!! It happens at every level of sports. I’m not being negative or mean it is what it is. At the end of the day it’s about the children. I say good luck to all of the children. Let’s make sure we are this passionate about their academics. Now this is where I boast, my nephew received a 4-year ride to LSU, not basketball, but academics! I wish all your children the best in the state tournament. Peace and blessings.

Wow. Nice job by the AJC with their picks for the teams from the southern regions of AAAAA boys to advance to the Final Four. Had Harrison and McEachern to advance and both lost in first round, as did that whole region. The usual ATL Metro dominance is only true for Milton, and that is not the usual, since they have only done it for the last 3 years and because they have a rare team of recruits. After the studs graduate, Boyd will probably leave when similar recruits don’t come in. Anyway, besides Milton and maybe Wheeler that they dominated, Who else is there who got it done in the AAAAA boys playoffs tonight? Walton lost. All of supposedly great Region 4 lost in the southern bracket to Region 2-AAAAA that never gets any respect, except maybe Newton. Lanston Hughes the 4 seed beat Harrison at Harrison. So much for the AJC rankings and Stephenson the 6 seed of the Region 2-AAAAA tournament beat AJC ranked Campbell too. Westlake that Newton beat 3 times also won at McEachern. Maybe Newton is pretty good, since they went 16-1 in that region and beat all those teams that swept Region 4 twice. Newton can play with anyone in the state but Milton and may get to Final Four again, and yet I have seen them play and they are doing it without any recruits and no one over 6′ 4. So what if no one can play with Milton and they win state again. They are basically a college team of recruits put together. Where is the fun in them winning it again? And let’s face it, none of those kids just happened to move to Milton without undue influence. Let’s get real. It’s not a character first program with Boyd running it. Winning with class is what it is all about.

@ Center – Please note while you are conspiring to cast light to MG, Milton, and other schools, your player, Jordan Price has some eligibility questions that need to be raised. He started at Columbia, left and went to a prep school in Tenn. and is now at SWD. Sounds real clean. Real clean.

The difference between on person picking the top 10 and the coaches top 10 poll.
After the 1st round in AAAAA, the number of teams still alive from the final AJC poll is four (4). Milton, Pt. Ridge, Wheeler and Norcross. The number of teams in the Coaches poll that have survived through the 1st round is eight (8). Milton, Wheeler, Norcross, Newton, Pt. Ridge, Jenkins, Tift Co., and Savannah. Always better to have a poll by commitee, especially the coaches, who really follow and study many of these teams.

@bball72 Ok. Like I stated earlier, numerous schools are doing it. I just made a comment regarding what I know for sure.
@MGHS By no means am I hating. Please be reminded I am very aware of what colleges are looking for in students. I’ve seen your guys at MGHS and very impressed(athletically). I have worked as a college scout. Trust and believe I know alllllllllllllll about your guys. I’ve given several of your guys a ride home on numerous occasions during AAU season. I’m making a simple point, bottom line, illegal activity is going on in numerous schools in the Metro Atlanta Area atheletic programs. It is what it is. Let’s move on, and good luck to your team. I will be at the game. C’ya there.

Why do the adults get so angry the truth is the truth. dropping kids name is BS Im not a SWD fan but GHSA wont look into the movement of kids from school to school it will hurt the bottom line. MONEY parents who move the kids for better looks by colleges its all just too much. when its all said and done I hope the kids are learning and able to move on to the next level regardless. WHY??????

WHY does the discussion of cheating (playing out of district players) continuing to gain so much attention?
GHSA is not following up on these Allegations so why are people making such a big deal about nothing.
just a question, employees of DeKalb County Schools have the option to send their child/children to the school within the county of their choice which I am sure may be the case in other districts as well-meaning Milton(Fulton), Wheeler(Gwinnett), and other alleged schools people suggest cheating.
Although having a job is not such a bad thing either.

No problem with Miller Grove, just the obvious cheaters like Milton, Wheeler, and Norcross who’s communities don’t produce enough talent to win let alone be competitve with out recruiting the best young brothers to come play for them. No problem with Surburban Atlanta Christian(G.A.C.) they are private and can recruit whoever, they have no district or attendance zone or area…SOUTH ATLANTA will win our 2nd title in 3 years.

I think the 5a girls is locked up by Norcross. Diamond De shields is way to talented and cant be stopped. The 5a Boys though is interesting. Milton obviously will make the finals and i think Norcross will be playing them in the finals. Norcross has a tough game vs Centennial this weekend but Norcross hasn’t lost at home in 6 years. And Norcross always beats Centennial. From there The devils have to play wheeler. This will be the most exciting game in the tournament. wheeler and Norcross have a heated rivalry and the devils want revenge from the loss to wheeler earlier in the season. Norcross will end up winning this game. They have been playing a lot differently than earlier in the season. Their starting to play team ball and they have a lot more chemistry together. The only question mark is their point guard. He is very talented but i dont no if he can handle the pressure in tight games. I see the devils however upsetting Milton and winning the title. The reason why is because they want revenge on the defeat last year in the state playoffs. We all no the call and the devils are highly motivated. If the devils are going to win they must get their bigs involved. and have solid play from their point guard.

RudBuck,
I do belueve that Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers will beat McEachern. No Films have been watched for the Lowndes Game. But the Lady Tigers have a lot of talent. Bradwell Institute have so many weapons that they can beat you with. Atlanta Metro have height. Bradwell have a lot of speed and thy can shoot very well from the perimeter. I don’t know if it’s becasue Bradwell Institute os number one in the state, is the reaosn for the tough challenges by their opponents or they havent been testeed up until now. But Region 3-AAAAA Beach had convincingly won round one as well, and they finished number two in the region. I do believe that Bradwell will br at the Gwinette Center and will be in the Finals…..

BI needed a last-second shot to get past a 4 seed from a weak region at home. No film review? Did the BI coaches think they had the Lowndes game in the bag? I was expecting a 30 point beatdown out of the “undefeated #1 team” in AAAAA against an opponent like Lowndes.
