No. 1-ranked Columbia High among four DeKalb basketball teams to win region championships

Four DeKalb Schools’ basketball teams won region basketball titles on Saturday night and earned the No. 1 seed going into the state playoffs that begin on Friday.

The No. 1 ranked Columbia Eagles got a seven-point play from point guard Tahj Shamsid-Deen to end the third period to break open their Region 5-AAA championship victory over Woodward Academy at Riverwood on Saturday night.

Shamsid-Deen was fouled with 4.9 seconds to play in the third period and an ensuing technical gave him four three throws which he nailed to give Columbia a 50-36 lead. The technical also gave the Eagles possession for the final 4.9 seconds and Shamsid-Deen dribbled to the top of the key and hit nothing but net sending Columbia to a 53-36 lead to start the fourth quarter.

He added a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter and Jarmal Reid put in a layup to extend the lead to 57-36 and the Eagles held off for the 64-48 victory. Columbia will host first round play that is scheduled for Saturday, February 26.

The Region 5-AAA girls’ championship didn’t go as well for the Columbia Lady Eagles as St. Pius hit a three-pointer at the final buzzer for a 43-40 upset victory. Columbia will host first round play with the No. 2 seed.

The Stone Mountain Lady Pirates used a 25-point performance by Charra Reeves to defeat Washington 57-44 for the Region 5-AAA No. 3 seed. Danielle Clark added 17 points in the win. Stone Mountain will have to go on the road in the first round of the state playoffs.

Other Region Results
Southwest DeKalb upset No. 1 ranked Miller Grove 60-56 to take the Region 6-AAAA boys’ title and the No. 1 seed for the Class AAAA state playoffs. Both teams will get host roles in the first round that begins on Saturday, February 26.

The Region 6-AAAA boys’ No. 3 seed went to Tucker as the Tigers defeated the Chamblee Bulldogs 65-44. Both teams advance to the state playoffs.

The Redan Lady Raiders pulled out a 50-47 overtime victory against the Miller Grove Lady Wolverines to win the Region 6-AAAA girls’ title and No.
1 seed. Both teams will host first round action scheduled for Friday.

The fourth title for DeKalb was brought home by the Stephenson Lady Jaguars as they downed Westlake 70-57 to win the Region 2-AAAAA title at Luella on Saturday. The Lady Jaguars will host a first round Class AAAAA game.

The Jaguars came up short in the Region 2-AAAAA boys’ championship as they fell to Newton 64-50. As a No. 2 seed, the Jaguars also earned a host role for the first round of the state playoffs.

Columbia’s Shamsid-Deen is a very special player….got tournament MVP honors. Although the technical foul call was pure BS; the refs leaned (powerhouse) Columbia’s way all night and their obvious “bias” screwed a very good Woodward team.

Just a question

How does Miller Grove get the 1 seed on GHSA bracket after losing to SWD?

They shouldn’t. I think someone either assumed Miller Grove would win or they made a mistake. SWD is the number 1 seed because they won the 6-AAAA title.

Thats what I figured Ga.Prep and GHSA has Miller Grove in the 1 seed thought it was strange.

..enjoyed the thrilling St Pius-Columbia girls buzzer beater, what a game…totally agree with biased refs blogment, the AA ref’s calls were particularly interesting in favor of the Columbia squad, especially on that 7-point play.

I can not find anyone that enjoys watching girls basketball. That’s why at the ghetto public schools they schedule the girls game after the boys because they know the hoods aren’t going to stay out late to watch the girls game…. and columbia great win you must have broke the bank to get you some calls

SWD boys will be ready in the State Tournament, no one in the State should be confident playing against them, Miller Grove sure doesn’t want to play them again.

Woodward Academy got absolutely screwed in that Columbia region championship game. The Columbia player pulled down on the neck of the Woodward kids jersey as he fell, the Columbia kid, jumped up and 3 or 4 other Columbia players came in ready to fight and pushed the Woodward player… Then the ref called a tech on the Woodward player??? Absoultely ricidulous. It was a 7 point game, and Woodward was going on a run. Bias refs screwed Woodward…

WOODWARD STATE CHAMPIONS!!!!!!! LETS GO

Woodward fans hush

Woodward fans are y’all seriously saying the refs were biased for Columbia…was the foul on the 7 point play not an extremely hard foul by 2 WA players followed by your players crowding the Columbia kid before his team mates came to his aid? If you guys would have played a little defense on him in the closing seconds at 5′8 the kid would have never gotten the shot off to make it a 7 point play….you guys played a hard fought game but you were never in the game there was no bias….the refs were so biased for columbia that they ejected a kid from Columbia for knocking one of your kids hands off of him who was blatantly holding him…no I didn’t say just a tech but an ejection (both would have been unwarranted) …. Just a thought huh….next time do as Columbia has to do every game and just score enough so the refs can’t be a factor….and I suppose they get biased calls across the nation since they win 28+ games a year….you all should really chill with that….I looks bad coming from such a decent team.

Nah we didn’t break the bank…we are at one of those ghetto public schools you speak of we don’t have enough money to do that in the ghetto…the hood doesn’t supply us with cash and support….but since all of the money is in private schools and thoughts like that cross your mind you should have tried to break them off a little cash….kind of like we broke a few of your kids off in the rim….get outta here with that racist bull…ghetto public schools…for real? People never cease to show their true colors.

Every year someone has a new complaint about the basketball program at Columbia. The bottom line is that this basketball program is led by one of the best, longest tenured coaches in the state Dr. Phillip McCrary. In addition to being a fantastic coach, he is an inspiration to all that make his acquaintence. Keep it up Coach! Let’s Go Eagles!!!!!!!

Yes Coach McCrary is a fantastic Coach and has lead pleanty of teams to the state. Even in the earlier 90’s against James Forrest and Matt Harpering. Columbia is Ture to this not NEW to this.Keep up the hard work Coach McCrary. I’ll be in the stands to see the Eagles Soaring all the way to Macon.

Agree, Coach McCrary is a class act. Unlike other powerhouse (public) high schools who recruit like they are D1 programs, this man is a gentleman who operates with integrity and a mission servant mentality. He said some very kind and encouraging things to our son about his play after we played them this winter. Columbia is the best HS team I’ve seen in two years. Disclipined, poised, great chemistry, respectful….and that fabric is woven together by a head coach who elicits respect, brings out the best in young men, and who “has their backs” when they need guidance.
