I wrote a story for Tuesday’s AJC about the best 10 region tournaments in metro Atlanta. I’m going to cut and paste that, while adding these tournaments from around the state …
8-AAA boys: West Hall (21-4) is the favorite, but Gainesville (17-7 and Franklin County (19-5) are in the mix at Winder-Barrow.
2-A boys: Wilcox County (19-2) and Lanier County (20-4) got byes to the semifinals.
7-AA boys: Dade County (23-3) and Rockmart (24-2) are the top teams at Georgia Highlands.
3-AAA girls: Washington County (24-0) and Grovetown (23-1) are the favorites at Burke County.
6-AAA boys: Carrollton (17-5) and Troup (19-3) are the top teams playing in LaGrange.
Here are what I think are the 10 most interesting region tournaments this week in metro Atlanta.
4-AAAAA girls: Fourth-ranked North Cobb (22-3) won its last seven regular-season games, beating three ranked teams, to snatch the No. 1 seed. Contending are No. 5 McEachern (19-5), No. 6 Campbell (19-6) and former No. 1 Hillgrove (18-4). The semifinals and finals are Thursday and Saturday at McEachern.
5-AAAAA boys: Look for No. 3 Wheeler (19-6) to face No. 6 Walton (19-6) in the final Saturday at Etowah. These East Cobb rivals split in the regular season.
7-AAAAA boys: It’s the only tournament that features four Top 10 teams — No. 2 Peachtree Ridge (20-4), Collins Hill (18-6), No. 5 Norcross (16-9) and No. 8 North Gwinnett (17-7). They play today through Saturday at Mill Creek.
7-AAAAA girls: No. 1-ranked North Gwinnett (19-5) could face defending state champion Norcross (21-3) in Saturday’s final at Mill Creek. North Gwinnett is 2-0 against Norcross this season.
3-AAAA girls: No. 2 Fayette County (20-5), No. 6 Alcovy (22-2) and No. 8 McIntosh (23-3) are state-ranked, but only the top two finishers this week at Woodland in Stockbridge will get a home playoff game in the first round.
4-AAAA boys: No. 8 Lovejoy (22-3) beat No. 9 Jonesboro (22-3) in December and got a bye to the semifinals and an automatic berth into the state tournament, but the title in this deep if unspectacular region will be determined Saturday at Mundy’s Mill.
6-AAAA boys: Top-ranked Miller Grove (24-1) is no shoo-in to win this stacked region that includes Tucker (20-4), Chamblee (15-9), Southwest DeKalb (19-5) and Mays (15-9). Tucker is the host school.
6-AAAA girls: No. 1-ranked Chamblee (23-0) will try to keep its unbeaten record at Tucker in a region that includes 2010 champion Southwest DeKalb (17-8) and 2010 Class AAAAA runner-up Redan (18-3).
6-AA boys: Defending state champion Greater Atlanta Christian (20-5) beat South Atlanta (24-1) in December, but South Atlanta is unbeaten since and has the No. 1 ranking. Expect them to play again Saturday at Maynard Jackson in Atlanta, but they’ll have to get through No. 10 Buford (18-7) and Decatur (18-7).
6-AA girls: Defending champion Buford (21-3) and fifth-ranked GAC (19-6) have split their meetings this season. They would play Saturday at Maynard Jackson.

Todd, thanks for the update, besides Milton (AAAAA) & Miller Grove (AAAA), I think most tournaments will be up for grabs. Who are your favorites across the board (I know you love making these early pix so everyone you didnt pick can jump on your case!) Living in S Ga, I haven’t had opportunity to see too many teams from Metro. South Ga isn’t as talented as years past, however, it still should be an exciting 4 weeks of hoops!!!!

There is not mention of Region 5 AAAA. This Region has exemplified nothing short of the Big East in the NCAA. A lot of Teams are capable of beating anyone, as this Region is up for grabs. Lithia Springs continues to reload an inspite of a very young team could be headed for State again. Chapel Hill, Villa Rica, and Alexander can win in a close game@

Lets not forget about an Outstanding Season of Performance by Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers. They have successfully dismantled every team they came up against this season. They are the “ONLY” Class AAAAA Ladies Varsity Basketball team to be undefeated in the regular season.
I am hoping for a clean sweep of the post season tournament for Bradwell Institute. I would love to see how these Class AAAAA Lady Varsity Basketball match up against this year’s Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers. I don’t know too much about the Gwinette County Teams, but again, it will be exciting to see how these teams play against each other.

@sportsfan31313: No final words. Lets leave it for the hardwood. Let the games begin, and good luck to all the teams. On another note, I checked the prepcountry site today and they have more regions brackets up. Tried to let hj know, hopefully they’ll have them all up tomorrow, I hope. Again good luck and lets see where this years tourney ends.

Rudbuck,
I agree. I respect the fact how you support your Gwinette County Teams. I am from South Georgia and a HUGE Bradwell Institute Fan in addition to Region 3-AAAAA.
Although I am not a guru for the Gwinette County Teams other than I do know that a few have some State Titles in some Sports but I will say that In Football, I do like Grayson, and I am also like Peachtree Ridge. Gwinette County is one of the fastest growing Counties in Georgia with a enormous amount of wealth. They can practically buy whatever they want. Even a State Title.
Ok Ok Ok Rudbuck just kidding. I didn’t get the opportunity to see the Brackets today due to the amount of work I had today. but I will check again tomorrow. Yes Good Luck to all of the teams as the tournament begins.

AAAAA region7 should have an exciting region tournament this week. I predict Peachtree Ridge vs. North Gwinnett and Norcross vs. Collins Hill in the semi finals. Either Mill Creek and or Meadow Creek could be spoilers.
I am picking Norcross to play Peachtree Ridge in the finals. They split this year and are playing on a neutral court at Mill Creek. There should be some good basketball played Friday and Saturday.

@Todd: I must say thanks to you guys. This years coverage of High School basketball got off to a better start. The coverage started much earlier than in previous years. We know football rules down here, but you guys tried some early coverage of basketball and did a much better job. Now for the new task at hand, the regionals have started, and though I know it’s early, some of the early games have been played and wondering if we coul;d at least get the scores of these games. It would be a big plus. Keep up the good work.

@SPRTSFAN31313: Thanks, but I am not a fan of the Gwinnett teams, don’t live there. I just enjoy the game and have to stick to the facts. Hey if I saw Lowndes. LaGrange or any other team play a strong schedule (regional and national) I would give them their props too. I’m in North Fulton, big fan of Centennial, but Centennial though they are scrappy and lightning quick, lack what they had the last few years, height. So the Miltons have the run of the region, especially when they broke up region 6, which last year included Centennial, Milton, Wheeler and Walton and all top 10 teams Now those Gwinnett teams have 5 of the top 10 teams in 5-A and beat up on each other on the boys side and the girls do much of the same, including the defending champ, So I think the girls championship somehow has to come thru Gwinnett. But as I said previously, let the games begin, it will be and interesting 4 weeks ahead.

The Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers are now number one in the Coaches Poll. I think this is the first time in school history or least in my time. Coach Faye Baker has really done an awesome job with these Young Ladies. This is quite an achievement, and recognition that should be duly noted. Congratulations goes out to them as well.

@ SportsFan31313….the girls title is staying in gwinnett this year…and how can u put any team above North Gwinnett? They have beaten Norcross (defending state AAAAA champs remember?) twice this year. it’s sarcasm. I am not a fan of Collins Hill but they were eliminated by Mill Creek last night and they were ranked number 4 in AAAAA competition. Mill Creek won 2 games all season in the region. So Collins Hill is out and they had a very good regular season and played good competition. Seems unfair to me.

I UNDERSTAND YOUR FRUSTRATION. BUT WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST. IF YOU THINK IT’S UNFAIR, THEN THESE TEAMS SHOULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF BUSINESS, WHEN IT COUNTED THE MOST. THAT IS WHAT THE REGIONS AND STATE ARE FOR, THE TEAM WITH THE BIGGEST HEART WINS WHEN IT COUNTS MOST. COLLINS HILL AND CHAMBLEE SHOUD HAVE BEEN HUNGRY TO WIN. BY THE WAY, MILL CREEK WON 6 REGIONAL GAMES AND 14 OVERALL, ONLY 4 WINS LESS THAN COLLINS HILL IN BOTH.

I like your Confidence. We will just have to wait and see. Bradwell Institute is not 25-0 for nothing. Yes North Gwinette did beat Norcorss twice. But have you ever thought that Norcross was over-rated? Gwinette County Fans stated that about Camden County, But they have beaten all of the Metro Atlanta Teams when they played them. @ Mr. Coach: Totally agree with you, it’s region and State tourney time. You cannot take anyone for granted. Every team is hungry to be 1 of the 4 teams to represent in state bracket, and sometime all it takes is 1 win to fall into that group. Rudbuck,
I wont go on the blogs saying that Bradwell Institute is “SUPPOSE” to beat Johnson Of Savannah. Was North Gwinette “SUPPOSE” to beat Norcross? This is the tournament and the regular season is of the past now. It’s 0-0 to start, and when you are so sure that you are “SUPPOSE” to beat a team, that is when you mess up. Look at Chamblee and Collins Hill? You see what happened to them?

Yes C.H. and Chamblee “SHOULD HAVE” won, and B.I. was “SUPPOSE” to win. As you see the competition was much stronger for the 2 losing teams. Hey if the B.I. girls go all the way I’ll bow and have nothing but respect for them. Well I have said my piece, goodluck to B.I. and all the teams still in. @SportsFan31313
I’m a big follower of girls basketball in S. GA. BI is good. Ive watched them play at least 6 times. Beyond Myria and Coco the rest of the team are average at best. On any given night any team can be beaten, but lets be real, Norcross would beat BI 9 out of 10 times if they played.
Besides that, BI’s season record is very misleading. The only quality games Ive seen them play is during the summer. They had their full compliment of players when they played 4A Statesboro twice this summer and lost by more than 20. They eeked out a win against Savannah Christian (I assume they won because I left with 1min left and they were leading by 3).
So I appreciate your enthusiasm for BI but lets be real.

AJC poll has been off base lately. Kind of a joke when their #4 team doesn’t even qualify for state. Collins Hill and South Gwinnett over consistent winners like Newton, Tift Co who have gotten to Final Four with regularity. Newton at 22-4 (14-1 Region) clinched playoff birth coming off their 30-2 Final Four and Region Champ year last season. Can’t just put teams in poll because of their affluent region and location geographically. One person can’t decide an entire poll anyway. At least coaches poll has coaches opinions involved. Regardless of North vs South, making the playoffs is bottom line and making a run in them means something. We’ll see who does that. Milton is primed to win it all with their recruited team, so if you keep them #1 in poll, at least you’ll have 1 team accurately ranked.

@Bill: I understand your anguish at the AJC poll. But comparing the AJC and coaches poll, they both had Collins Hill at #4. So does that mean the coaches opinion is wrong also?

Greetings RudBuck, and I’mjussay’n
Well we are not talking about this past summer, and we are definitely not talking about pre-season games. Statesboro is a very good team in Class AAAA. But if they Bradwell Institute Ladies now, they would lose. Now that is being real. Statesboro is not new to Bradwell Institute as Bradwell Institute and Statesbroro have always beaten up on each otherr years. Football, Basketball, Track and etc. Check the history. But the Bradwell Institute in the regular season and now is a very good team. And again, if you don’t know, you had better ask somebody from down there rather than checking the scores and the win loss record of the team that they are playing. I see that you did’nt mention Beach, or Windsor Forest Ladies. Beach has definitely been there. The past two years Bradwell Institute and Beach have been to the elite eight and the final four for the past two years. Bradwell Institute lost to Redan both times. One in the elite eight and once in the final four.
I’mjussay’n,
Well the Norcross you are talking about this year, I doubt seriously that tbey would beat Bradwell Institute. They wwre over-rated from the start, and we all know this. North Gwinette kicked their tails and took their names on both sides of the court. But I will agree with you as i have mentioned in my earlier comments. The regular season is over, and great jobs to the teams that went undefeated in the regular season. But it doesn’t mean anything if you can’t win your first Region tournament game. Example: Chamblee, and Collins Hill. It was mentioned that Bradwell Institute beat up on a weak Johnson Of Savannah who only won 2 games this year. Well I have’nt checked their record but i would believe that they have won more than two regular season games otherwise they would not have been in the Region Tournament. Nevertheless; it is time for Bradwell Institute to turn it up a notch and take no team for granted. There is absolutely nothing misleading about Bradwell Institute’s 26-0 record. They are No. 1 in Class AAAAA in the Coaches Poll so they see something in Bradwell Institute that you can’t see. But It is what it is. How do you dispute 26-0 overall, and 17-0 in Region 3-AAAAA? They have to play as a championship team should play, no matter who they play against at this point. You lose, and you go home. So if they beat up on Johnson of Savannah, sobeit. this is the tournament. They have to go all out. It is Bradwell Institute’s job to score the points. it is the opponent’s job to try to stop them. So, maybe you are in denial.

AJC Polls look more to past years win loss records, returning players, and strength of schedule. The Coaches polls goes off the current record I think. Correct me if I am wrong.

Sportsfan31313: below is the link to Johnson, Savannah’s schedule and results for the year. It is the region’s and every team gets a chance at the tournament. A good example is boy’s 6-5A, West Forsyth didn’t win a regional game all year and beat Alpharetta the #3 seed in the region and knocked out Alpharetta for their 1st win a gainst a region opponent. They are now in the semis, which mean they will go on to the state tournament, go figure.

Well it looks like Miller Groves only lost this year to Dr. Krop from Miami will be overturned. Seems like Dr. Crop played with an ineligible player and had to forfeit all but one game. If so, that would make Miller Grove undefeated for the season thus far.

Tony parker is unreal! He went to work in the 4th tonight vrs Chamblee and blew open a 3 point game going into the 4th Q. Chamblee tried doubling down and he just powered thru and over their big men.
They deserve the 3 peat.
Anyone know a Tucker v. SWD score?

I do not know. Walton can do some damage on the other side of the bracket and they own a victory over wheeler this season. Milton also has to beat a very talented region 8 champion if they get passed Walton.I was at the Wheeler Walton game tonight and I am a Wheeler fan.

@Cory: Hey you mentioned South Atlanta showed up strong this weekend, but didn’t they lose to GAC 68-54 on Saturday in the region championship game.
@foster joiner: Yes I mentioned the top 3 favorites, but you are right there are quite a few teams that can do damage in 5-A, Walton, N. Gwinnett, and even Westlake who are peaking right now, just to name a few.
@Decatursfinest: Wow, just as Miller Grove was getting set to get back that lost from Dr. Krop forfeiting their games SWD steps it up. It musta been a great game from start to finish.

Region 8 was weak this year….now way that Berkmar team could go deep into this tournament, I think they have one player over 6′5. I do not see how Milton does not cruise through to the title.

Wheeler always plays great basketball this time of the year and if there is someone Milton does not want to see it is Wheeler. The cats got robbed by the refs at the region tournament last year which allowed Milton to win the region. Wheeler has not forgotten about the travesty against the ghsa and high school basketball committed by the refs. Walton has the type team that could give Milton trouble. Milton is in the weakest region in aaaaa by far. If they did not win the region Boyd would be fired.

Those Lady Tigers Of Bradwell Institute are o a roll. Just like the 1993 Team they had with Felicia Milton who have since play in the WNBA. I think the 1993 team went either 29-0 or 30-1 something close to that. I hope they can go undefeated and win the Class AAAAA State Title.

RudBuck,
I understand that. But the show down for the the Region 3-AAAAA will probably be between Beach and Bradwell Institute who battled for the last two years. Beach Ladies has a 30 year winning history. It will be a great game between the two as it always are.

bekmel,
I know she would do a better job than what the present person who have as Athletic Director and head Coach is doing. He came from a weak Johnson of Savannah who hardly win any football games. You know in Washington DC there is a Female Head Varsity Football Coach. Maybe this could set a new precedence in Georgia. But my goodness Bradwell Institute could USE all the help they can get in recruiting a talented head varsity football coach to bring back the winning seasons to Bradwell Institute. People hardly show up to the football games any more because of the lousy seasons that they have endured and merely accepted….

“The Bradwell Institute girls were the best team in Region 3-AAAAA all season, and Saturday’s beat down of Beach did nothing to disprove the Tigers’ supremacy. Bradwell, undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state, led 18-2 midway through the first quarter and was never seriously threatened en route to winning the Region3-AAAAA Tournament for the second straight year with a 57-48 victory over Beach.”
RudBuck,
I want you to know that Beach has won 8 consecutive Region 3-AAAAA Titles in row up until last year. That was when Bradwell Institute took over the Reigns. I am telling you now that you all in North Georgia had better take Bradwell Institute seriously, or it could be a painful and emotional lesson.

sportsfan31313: Many people here always say how they should pick teams for what they are doing now and not in the past. Right now Beach is not that team that won 8 consecutive whatevers. The truth of the matter is that BI has won a weak 3-AAAAAA and now the real fun begins, they should be able to get thru round 1 against 1-AAAAA, let’s see what happens afterwards. As I said I’ll bow if they go all the way and give them their props. Oh BTW, I am not in denial……..LOL! I’m a Centennial fan, and over the last 5 years they have been tough, but I have the sense this year to know as scrappy and fast as they are, they have no height and will have an early exit. I am looking at today and not what any team has done in the past. Heck, the Knicks competed every year in the past, what have they done lately, should I say they are great on their past history………NOT.

Well we will see as the competition increases. But I believe that your Class AAAAA North Georgia favorites are over-rated as they haven’t played any South Georgia Teams have they? I see that North Gwinette dropped to Number 4, and Norcross is at Number 3. But again, I agree with you as you stated, “let the decision be made on the hardwood”.

Well I don’t know the height of the North Georgia Basketball Teams, but I will say that Bradwell Institute are very fast paced and if you are saying that North Georgia has height on the team, lets see if they are also good in track…..
Just Kidding. But lets see how fast the North Georgia Height can keep up with the fast pace of Bradwell Institute. What Bradwell Institute may lack in height, they make up from the 3 point perimeter, and fast breaks.
