Final regular-season basketball rankings: Where are the best region tournaments?

I wrote a story for Tuesday’s AJC about the best 10 region tournaments in metro Atlanta. I’m going to cut and paste that, while adding these tournaments from around the state …

8-AAA boys: West Hall (21-4) is the favorite, but Gainesville (17-7 and Franklin County (19-5) are in the mix at Winder-Barrow.
2-A boys: Wilcox County (19-2) and Lanier County (20-4) got byes to the semifinals.
7-AA boys: Dade County (23-3) and Rockmart (24-2) are the top teams at Georgia Highlands.
3-AAA girls: Washington County (24-0) and Grovetown (23-1) are the favorites at Burke County.
6-AAA boys: Carrollton (17-5) and Troup (19-3) are the top teams playing in LaGrange.

Here are what I think are the 10 most interesting region tournaments this week in metro Atlanta.

4-AAAAA girls: Fourth-ranked North Cobb (22-3) won its last seven regular-season games, beating three ranked teams, to snatch the No. 1 seed. Contending are No. 5 McEachern (19-5), No. 6 Campbell (19-6) and former No. 1 Hillgrove (18-4). The semifinals and finals are Thursday and Saturday at McEachern.
5-AAAAA boys: Look for No. 3 Wheeler (19-6) to face No. 6 Walton (19-6) in the final Saturday at Etowah. These East Cobb rivals split in the regular season.
7-AAAAA boys: It’s the only tournament that features four Top 10 teams — No. 2 Peachtree Ridge (20-4), Collins Hill (18-6), No. 5 Norcross (16-9) and No. 8 North Gwinnett (17-7). They play today through Saturday at Mill Creek.
7-AAAAA girls: No. 1-ranked North Gwinnett (19-5) could face defending state champion Norcross (21-3) in Saturday’s final at Mill Creek. North Gwinnett is 2-0 against Norcross this season.
3-AAAA girls: No. 2 Fayette County (20-5), No. 6 Alcovy (22-2) and No. 8 McIntosh (23-3) are state-ranked, but only the top two finishers this week at Woodland in Stockbridge will get a home playoff game in the first round.
4-AAAA boys: No. 8 Lovejoy (22-3) beat No. 9 Jonesboro (22-3) in December and got a bye to the semifinals and an automatic berth into the state tournament, but the title in this deep if unspectacular region will be determined Saturday at Mundy’s Mill.
6-AAAA boys: Top-ranked Miller Grove (24-1) is no shoo-in to win this stacked region that includes Tucker (20-4), Chamblee (15-9), Southwest DeKalb (19-5) and Mays (15-9). Tucker is the host school.
6-AAAA girls: No. 1-ranked Chamblee (23-0) will try to keep its unbeaten record at Tucker in a region that includes 2010 champion Southwest DeKalb (17-8) and 2010 Class AAAAA runner-up Redan (18-3).
6-AA boys: Defending state champion Greater Atlanta Christian (20-5) beat South Atlanta (24-1) in December, but South Atlanta is unbeaten since and has the No. 1 ranking. Expect them to play again Saturday at Maynard Jackson in Atlanta, but they’ll have to get through No. 10 Buford (18-7) and Decatur (18-7).
6-AA girls: Defending champion Buford (21-3) and fifth-ranked GAC (19-6) have split their meetings this season. They would play Saturday at Maynard Jackson.

Sportsfan31313: below is the link to Johnson, Savannah’s schedule and results for the year. It is the region’s and every team gets a chance at the tournament. A good example is boy’s 6-5A, West Forsyth didn’t win a regional game all year and beat Alpharetta the #3 seed in the region and knocked out Alpharetta for their 1st win a gainst a region opponent. They are now in the semis, which mean they will go on to the state tournament, go figure.

Click it on, 1 region win, 2 wins the whole season.

Well it looks like Miller Groves only lost this year to Dr. Krop from Miami will be overturned. Seems like Dr. Crop played with an ineligible player and had to forfeit all but one game. If so, that would make Miller Grove undefeated for the season thus far.

Tony parker is unreal! He went to work in the 4th tonight vrs Chamblee and blew open a 3 point game going into the 4th Q. Chamblee tried doubling down and he just powered thru and over their big men.

They deserve the 3 peat.

Anyone know a Tucker v. SWD score?

Milton has double digit turnovers, look a little off key, though defense looks solid and up 31-15 over Roswell at halftime.

Where are all those Buford homers now. South Atlanta showed up strong this weekend. And I’m from Gwinnett County.

@LangstonHughesDad: Wherever you are at, I guess Langston Hughes forgot they were suppose to make some noise and change region2-AAAAA.

I guess Wheeler, Norcross and Milton go into the state tournament as the top 3 favorites in AAAAA.

I do not know. Walton can do some damage on the other side of the bracket and they own a victory over wheeler this season. Milton also has to beat a very talented region 8 champion if they get passed Walton.I was at the Wheeler Walton game tonight and I am a Wheeler fan.

@Cory: Hey you mentioned South Atlanta showed up strong this weekend, but didn’t they lose to GAC 68-54 on Saturday in the region championship game.

@foster joiner: Yes I mentioned the top 3 favorites, but you are right there are quite a few teams that can do damage in 5-A, Walton, N. Gwinnett, and even Westlake who are peaking right now, just to name a few.

@Decatursfinest: Wow, just as Miller Grove was getting set to get back that lost from Dr. Krop forfeiting their games SWD steps it up. It musta been a great game from start to finish.

@foster joiner: Just looking at the bracket, if Milton faces Walton, that would mean that Walton had beaten the region 8 champion, because they would be in the same lower bracket.

Region 8 was weak this year….now way that Berkmar team could go deep into this tournament, I think they have one player over 6′5. I do not see how Milton does not cruise through to the title.

I`m so glad to see my high school teams ( LUCY LANEY ) boys and girls represent the AUGUSTA area so very well! Both teams at #3 in the state….thats fantastic Dont give the AA title to BUFORD and GAC or SOUTH ATLANTA just yet….we`ll have a lot to say about that!

Wheeler always plays great basketball this time of the year and if there is someone Milton does not want to see it is Wheeler. The cats got robbed by the refs at the region tournament last year which allowed Milton to win the region. Wheeler has not forgotten about the travesty against the ghsa and high school basketball committed by the refs. Walton has the type team that could give Milton trouble. Milton is in the weakest region in aaaaa by far. If they did not win the region Boyd would be fired.

bekmel,

Those Lady Tigers Of Bradwell Institute are o a roll. Just like the 1993 Team they had with Felicia Milton who have since play in the WNBA. I think the 1993 team went either 29-0 or 30-1 something close to that. I hope they can go undefeated and win the Class AAAAA State Title.

RudBuck,

I understand that. But the show down for the the Region 3-AAAAA will probably be between Beach and Bradwell Institute who battled for the last two years. Beach Ladies has a 30 year winning history. It will be a great game between the two as it always are.

SportsFan31313

bekmel,

I know she would do a better job than what the present person who have as Athletic Director and head Coach is doing. He came from a weak Johnson of Savannah who hardly win any football games. You know in Washington DC there is a Female Head Varsity Football Coach. Maybe this could set a new precedence in Georgia. But my goodness Bradwell Institute could USE all the help they can get in recruiting a talented head varsity football coach to bring back the winning seasons to Bradwell Institute. People hardly show up to the football games any more because of the lousy seasons that they have endured and merely accepted….

“The Bradwell Institute girls were the best team in Region 3-AAAAA all season, and Saturday’s beat down of Beach did nothing to disprove the Tigers’ supremacy. Bradwell, undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state, led 18-2 midway through the first quarter and was never seriously threatened en route to winning the Region3-AAAAA Tournament for the second straight year with a 57-48 victory over Beach.”

RudBuck,

I want you to know that Beach has won 8 consecutive Region 3-AAAAA Titles in row up until last year. That was when Bradwell Institute took over the Reigns. I am telling you now that you all in North Georgia had better take Bradwell Institute seriously, or it could be a painful and emotional lesson.

sportsfan31313: Many people here always say how they should pick teams for what they are doing now and not in the past. Right now Beach is not that team that won 8 consecutive whatevers. The truth of the matter is that BI has won a weak 3-AAAAAA and now the real fun begins, they should be able to get thru round 1 against 1-AAAAA, let’s see what happens afterwards. As I said I’ll bow if they go all the way and give them their props. Oh BTW, I am not in denial……..LOL! I’m a Centennial fan, and over the last 5 years they have been tough, but I have the sense this year to know as scrappy and fast as they are, they have no height and will have an early exit. I am looking at today and not what any team has done in the past. Heck, the Knicks competed every year in the past, what have they done lately, should I say they are great on their past history………NOT.

Well we will see as the competition increases. But I believe that your Class AAAAA North Georgia favorites are over-rated as they haven’t played any South Georgia Teams have they? I see that North Gwinette dropped to Number 4, and Norcross is at Number 3. But again, I agree with you as you stated, “let the decision be made on the hardwood”.

Well I don’t know the height of the North Georgia Basketball Teams, but I will say that Bradwell Institute are very fast paced and if you are saying that North Georgia has height on the team, lets see if they are also good in track….. :-) Just Kidding. But lets see how fast the North Georgia Height can keep up with the fast pace of Bradwell Institute. What Bradwell Institute may lack in height, they make up from the 3 point perimeter, and fast breaks.
