Down to the wire: Final week to sort out seeds for region playoffs

Region tournaments are a great thing, but they tend to make some of these late regular-season games less meaningful.

Take Region 7-AAAAA. Some huge games are being played, both boys and girls games, in this region this week. Norcross’ boys are surging and could wind up winning the region’s No. 1 seed despite a terrible start. North Gwinnett’s girls play No. 1 Norcross in a rematch of a game that North Gwinnett won last month on Friday.

But the problem is that those seeds are just for the region tournament. It’s the tourney that decides the region champ.

Here’s a list of games matching Top 10 teams in metro ATL this week. When I get a chance, I’ll add the rest of the state, but this was compiled for the print edition of the AJC, so metro was the focus.

These games are big, but are they that big?

Below all this is the rankings. We’ve got W-L records this week, although this ain’t football, where every score is documented in a timely and accurate way. So if there are errors, let us know.

Savannah has a great history in high school basketball in this state, and I’d love to see Jenkins or Savannah or Beach in a state final again some day. But I can’t see ranking Jenkins when the Warriors have lost to two unranked AAAA teams. Not saying Jenkins isn’t good, but I think there are 10 teams better in the arch from McEachern to South Gwinnett.

@sportsfan31313: You are way behind, don’t you keep up with the scores. A true fan, who talks so much trash, should be well aware of this. Brookwood lost on Tuesday and also lost on Friday. But as far as I’m concern both Norcross and Brookwood played a much stronger schedule than Bradwell, who beat up on the rest of 3-AAAAA and a few out of region flunkies. So do a little research b4 posting. I see you made two flubs in your postings.

This is a concern that has been going on for years. In A and AA why not have a complete basketball, football, and baseball “private” school high school association or league. There are many small “public” schools that have excellent athletic programs annually. But unfortunately the private schools, which are smaller in school size, 9-12 grades, dominante the regurlar and post seasons.
Just look at the state champoins, and the runner-ups, in especialy Class A, and Class AA. Oh, Buford should be consider a private school!
The smaller public schools and communities are “always” in the minority. For example, look at the present poll in Girls Class A basketball. Of the top 10 there are 6 private schools. This is a down year for private schools, as most years the top 10 in regular and post season are usually 8 or 9 of the top 10 teams.
GHSA has been aware of this for years. However, as usual money talks. The GHSA would only say that demorgrahics or travel distance is a factor. Could not the private schools “afford” any travel expenses? Also, think of this. Private schools are to be college prep schools for academics. So have a private high school association, and have their scheduled games on a Friday and Saturayd nights. That would not be any disruption in weekly class day studies.
Just food for thought !!!

rudbuck,

I made the correction, in addition it seems as if you are way behind as well. But you can talk about the strength of schedule all you want. Bradwell Institute is 25-0 who have also came up to the Metro Atlanta Area and beat one of the Atlanta Area Teams convincingly. You can’t argue against that and it be a valid argument.

Greetings Todd,

Do you actually see Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers at being Number two?
I think that it’s very unfortunate that The Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers are not No. 1 in the AJC. They have the best overall record in Class AAAAA this year, and therefore; they should definitely be No 1. Even if you go back the past two year along with this year, Bradwell Institute should have been propelled to the Number One Spot. I kept quiet about this all season long and now there is really no reason why they should not be at the Top in Class AAAAA.

I am a bit baffled. How do you place a team 19-5 14-0 in the region ahead of a team that is 25-0 and 16-0 in the region at the No 1. Spot? How do you successfully argue that? I have look at the strength of schedule that North Gwinette played. and are you telling me that this is the reason they are number 1? I don’t find their strength of schedule any tougher than Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers Schedule. Come on now! :-(

I agree with sportsfan…… bradwell’s girls have a good squad and still undeafeated…….
and how can Jenkins’ boys not be ranked at all in AAAAA? they’re 20-4 and undefeated in the region

Johnny Too Good,

I feel your pain. I see that they have North Gwinette Ladies at the Number Spot and they are in the same predicament that Jenkins is in. Yet they are Ranked Number 1.

@ sportsfan31313: Don’t see where I’m behind. Also the closest Bradwell got to a Metro team was Rockdale County, who by the way is not considered a metro area, and beat them by 10. They did hand #2 Taylor their only defeat in overtime. Now North Gwinnett on the other hand has played at least 5 games against top 10 teams, including beating defending champ and previous #1 Norcross twice, along with strong region. If you don’t consider that a stronger schedule, then something is wrong.

Does anyone know what team won the Coin flip for the Sub region champs between Wheeler and Walton? The coin flip was supposed to be done today (Feb 13th), but I haven’t seen any mention of it.

Thanks!

hj: though all the brackets are not up………4-AAAA does have the brackets up. Again go to:

http://www.ga.prepcountry.com

And as sportsfan31313 pointed out got to winter sports, boys basketball, playoff brackets. The regions that already have a bracket set up are in white, click your 4AAAA and you will see the bracket. The teams are not set in the bracket, but pretty sure you can figure out. Reapeat same for girls bracket.

RudBuck,

Well I guess you all only cliam Metro teams win they are winning. I thought Conyers was in the Metro Atlanta Area. The last time i checked they were. I see fans consider Newton a Metro Atlanta team and they are even farther out than Conyers. But have it your way. You can not dispute 25-0. Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute is the ONLY Class AAAAA that are currently undefeated. You know, people says the sme thing in football when Camden County was running the table on everyone in Metro Atlanta. They play in a weak Region, they do this and they do that. But nevertheless, Region 3-AAAAA Camden County beat the Metro Atlanta teams and claims the state title. But Brookwood wo it this year and Kudos to them. But rest assure that the State football title in Class AAAAA comes back to South Georgia this fall. I wont argue about strength of schedule but it is very hard to convince me that a team that is 19-5 should be number one when you have a team that is 25-0. But again, have it your way. It just strength the case as the favoritism and Sports Politics in North Georgia. 19-5? Geez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HJ,

I think they had the Region Seeds up. I did’t go all the way throughn it to see whether or not all of the State Classes were posted. I was looking in Class AAAAA and the Region Seedings. For Example Region 1 vs Region 3 in Class AAAAA in the first round.

Region 3-AAAAA No 1. Seed VS Region 1-AAAAA No. 4 seed.
