Four new teams take No. 1 rankings … Plus: Who’s No. 2? After Milton, there’s ??? …

We’ve got four new No. 1 teams this week – Norcross girls (AAAAA), Chamblee girls (AAAA), Kendrick girls (AA) and Wilkinson County boys (A).

What a mess in Class AAAAA this week. That’s both boys and girls.

Let’s start with the boys rankings: Seven of the Top 10 teams in AAAAA lost last week. Three of them (previous No. 2 Wheeler, No. 3 South Gwinnett and No. 6 Campbell) lost TWICE apiece, yet all three remain at least tied for first place in their regions.

Frankly, I don’t think off any AAAAA team besides Milton is worthy of being ranked No. 2 or No. 3 right now.

Our choice for No. 2 is Peachtree Ridge, which is in good position to win the class’s toughest region, 7. That’s despite the Lions’ 54-48 loss Tuesday to Norcross, which jumped from No. 10 to No. 5. I know: Norcorss has lost NINE times.

Who will challenge Milton?

There’s a bunch of good teams. But which is the second-best team in AAAAA? I think it’s going to be Norcross. The Devils aren’t there yet, but given three more weeks to sort out their chemistry issues and this could be the club.

Meanwhile, the girls rankings did a little shifting, too.

The AJC jinx devoured Hillgrove and Buford. I wrote stories on both – Hillgrove’s girls had taken the #1 ranking in AAAAA, and Buford was playing Wesleyan with chance perhaps to claim it was the best girls team statewide. Well, Buford lost to Wesleyan, and Hillgrove lost THREE times, all to teams ranked this week.

Is Wesleyan the top girls team in Georgia this year? Norcross beat W by one point, but Norcross has a loss to North Gwinnett.

Thirty-seven of 100 ranked teams lost last week.

In other news …

Milton beat Wheeler 89-78 on Saturday. Milton led by 18 in the third.

Greenville beat the previous No. 1, Whitefield Academy, in a Class A game Saturday. I haven’t tracked down details. Greenville’s top player, of course, is Kentavious Caldwell, who is headed to Georgia.

Tucker beat No. 1-ranked Columbia from AAA on Saturday. Tucker is a AAAA team, so Columbia held its top ranking. Tucker ought to be ranked, but no ranked team in AAAA lost last week. Lots of teams with just a couple of losses or fewer.

Chamblee’s girls beat Redan and took the #1 spot in AAAA.

It’s hard to beat Tucker at Tucker with MBOA officials. Irv Z. needs to retire. The officials stole the game from a Good young Columbia Team with all the no calls. Tucker shot $0 freethrows to Columbia 12. Its a shame when a crew of guys interject them selves into a game and make it bais towards another team Tucker does not need the help from officials. They are a pretty good team.

haha Burr. Agreed. what about it big boy? Milton won by a bunch last nite. coulda been 40 Stars spent a good deal of the 2nd half on the bench with “foul” issues. Refereeing was ATROCIOUS. Don’t get me wrong it was atrocious on both ends. But in the 3rd Q it looked like the refs wanted to see if Milton could beat Wheeler with its second 5. Turns out they can. Then when Milton put the horses back in it was an ugly rout. Wheeler has nothing for Milton this year. But I know they’ll be back. They still played aggressive defense, just could not match up with Dai Jon, Shannon and Nolte. I think the brutal national schedule Milton has played this year has chiseled them into a beast beyond anything else in AAAAA. If they can stay focused and hungry, no one can touch them. Shame MG can’t “play up” in this year’s state tournament.

I think alot of these teams are overrated. It appears all the ajc cares about are certain teams. There are several other teams out there that will win in the state. Stop falling in love with the hype of the AAU?high school teams. Oh yea, Dekalb County officials are groupies too.

Sorry about the Wheeler scores … The real ones were –

Milton 77, Wheeler 59
Walton 89, Wheeler 78

Also, we didn’t have the report that Woodland beat Chattahoochee in a Saturday boys game by our deadline, so the Hooch probably would’ve dropped.

I’m sure you’re right. There are always underrated and overrated teams. But if you don’t name names, we can’t discuss them.

Monroe Area boys, Town County girls, Athens Christain boys, Clarke Central Girls and Boys, Cedar Grove, Morgan Co girls, Walnut Grove girls….. schools that dont get so called transfers that D-1 PROSPECTS. Just saying I read or but AJC and all I hear about is Milton, Miller grove, etc… Kids from these school need coverage too. I mean the same old AJC. If you sell paper in that area then these kids deserve that press. They just work as hard as these other kids.

Wheeler will be back, I know from Boyd himself that Wheeler is the last team he wants run into at state. Holcomb completely neglects that Wheeler already beat Norcross. And don’t feed me some BS that Norcross has it together now, they don’t. A super talented team no doubt, but the chemistry is just awful there. They really miss Eddie Martin in a bad way, he could get the egos to play together.

Thanks SportsFan31313 for speaking up for the Lady Tigers of Bradwell Institute. Got blasted last week for commenting on how well they are doing. Evidently, according to others, BI plays in a weak region. Have to remind them this is basketball, not football. The Savannah area has always been a hotbed for basketball; boys and girls. And anyway, ANY team with a 21-0 record deserves some type of recognition, no matter what part of the State it is. Eye of The Tiger Baby!

Hey Milton fan,
its a shame that Milton can’t ‘play down’ to MG — that game was already played — on a neutral site, and Milton got waxed. Shannon could not stay with the pressure of the MG guards, and Parker was too much for Nolte or the Tech signee. I was at that game, MG was up by 20 at one point. No matter 4A or 5A, game already played……

Hey Miltonfan, if you get to read this, I’m with Hjerter. Milton got spanked by Miller Grove, I wasn’t at the game, but I was one of the many, and I mean many, that saw it televised nationally. I’ve seen 4 games played by Milton, not a fan, but love HS basketball, and I hope Julian Royal has toughen up, if not he’s going to get eaten up in college. Don’t get me wrong he’s a good player. But in the 4 games I watched, he was weak against smaller but scrappy opponenets in 2 games, instead of going strong he was altering shots, go figure, the 3rd game I saw was the TV game and yes he got spanked by Parker of MG, and the 4th game against Wheeler he was in foul trouble, against a much smaller Wheeler team than in years past, he looked sloppy.

GraingerBy Marriage,

How are you? In response to your comment, I hear this nonsense all of the time. First it was Region 3-AAAAA Camden County, and their Football team, now it’s Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers Basketball Team. Pay the Haters no mind. You can expect that from the North Georgia Haters. Just tell them all to sit down and drink some of their Haterade and be quiet. Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers Should be No 1. in the Georgia Coaches Poll next week. They are 23-0 with a 23- game winning streak which right now, surpass Norcross, and Brookwood. According to Max Preps, Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers are Number one in Division AAAAA Girls basketball.

Greetings Todd Holcombe,

How are you? Question for you? I have taken notice of the Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers, and their explosive season. This year, they can not be denied. I have taken a look at the past three years of their performance, and they should have been ranked this year from the beginning. However; Since they have finally been recognized, and they have maneuvered their way right now to the Number 3 Spot in the Georgia Coaches Poll last week, they should should rightfully be ranked number 2 and definitely they could argue being in the number one spot. One can’t reasonably deny that. I also compared the Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers against a lot of the top teams in AAAAA including Brookwood, and their calclations suggest that the Bradwell Institute lady Tigers would beat Norcross, and Brookwood. What are your thoughts?
