We’re taking nominations for the AJC Slam Dunk Contest

It’s that time again for one our most popular high school sporting events of the year — the celebrated AJC Slam Dunk Contest.

It’s official: Beginning now, we’re looking for a few good men (or women)  for the AJC Slam Dunk Contest, ones on Atlanta area high school basketball teams that can dunk with the best of them.

We are taking nominations between now and midnight on Jan. 31.

Do you know a local high school basketball player who is a prolific dunker? Someone who dunks with such a smooth style that it causes fans from BOTH teams to rise to their feet? That’s the player we want. Lots of players can dunk but we’re looking for creativity. Take a peek at this video and then read more below …

We are taking nominations, if you have one. Please list the player’s name, high school, and your best description of this player’s dunking ability below in the comments section. This is very important: Please also post a video link from the player you are nominating (for example, if the video is 6 minutes long, then tell us at what time in the video to be looking for the jam).

Here are the rules: The player must be a Georgia high school student on the roster of a metro basketball team, and nominations must link to video of a dunk by the nominated player. We want to see it with our own eyes. Also, when nominating the player, this may put the player in the running for the AJC Slam Dunk Contest but does not guarantee that they will be a finalist.

What if there’s no video link of your favorite dunk artist? You have until Jan. 31 to figure something out. The video can be from before or after practice, or during a game.

Past participants have included NBA lottery pick Derrick Favors, UGA all-star Travis Leslie and last year’s Mr. Georgia Basketball (Westlake’s Marcus Thornton).

Who will be this year’s winner of the AJC Slam Dunk Contest? Please post below.

From “the underdog” … anybody else with an opinion on Matt Citron??? He is getting a lot of support.

Jonathan Tinch- Stephenson High School
At 6′ 1”, Jonathan can dunk like a guy four inches taller. His dunks are both elegant and powerful. In October I took him to play in a College Showcase Event in upstate New York. On a break away after a steal, he threw down a dunk on some poor White Kid so violently, the entire gym gasped. A College Coach standing next to me whispered, “Jesus Christ…”

Here are some dunk artists mentioned in other posts that I would like to hear your opinion about ….

Kevin Ware, of Rockdale County, probably has the most poster dunks in the state. Check him out on YouTube. He has been putting on dunk showcases @ camps all summer long. He was even on one of the USA Junior Teams. He’s signed with Tennessee as well. Give him a invite. You won’t be disappointed. See for yourself.

From “Rick Francis” … (anyone have a video link?)

Darius Beresford from Lovejoy High School is one of the most explosive and creative dunkers I have ever seen. At 6′1” he has and asortment of dunks that are definitely jaw dropping. He is a natural showman that will keep the crowd on the edge of thier seats during each phase of the contest. My prediction is that Mr. Beresford will be this years slam dunk champion. A must see!

Roderick Perkins, Campbell High School. 6′4….averages multiple dunks a game and is on the exciting end of many ally-oops for the top 10 ranked Campbell Spartans! Actually did a 360 dunk against Soutch Cobb on Friday!

Brett Boron from McIntosh High School consistently gets hung on the rim, but I’m sure in a contest with all eyes on him he could put one in. If you find the footage of the MHS Seniors against the local PTCPD in May ‘04 you’ll see Mr. Boron getting violently hung on the rim in front of no more than 26 spectators.

No love for Nick Marshall. As always, the AJC is dissing the UGA community. UGA fans are use to it though Michael.

From “Coach Overall” … anyone else seen this player? Thoughts?

Kenneth Gaines JR of Whitefield Academy for a 6′3″ player he has made hops and dunks on small or big players it does not matter he is worht the hype. In the Atlanta vs Memphis Classic he was on the left wing and and attacked the basket on the Memphis High Center who is 6′8″ and made a highlight reel out of him.

This is from SJfanfolif … (and Shaquille Johnson, along with Miller Grove’s Brandon Morris, are my eary favorites, too)

I’m going to have to go with Shaquille Johnson (Milton). After watching him dunk in the City of Palms Classic dunk contest; I’m convinced he’s a force to be reckoned with. When you speak of a player that has fans from BOTH teams rise to their feet after a monstrous dunk; you’re speaking of Mr. Johnson. For example: During the championship game against St Patrick, Shaquille Johnson drove Baseline and threw down a tremendous dunk over six foot ten Dakari Johnson. If you watch and listen to the crowds response you will agree that Shaquille Johnson deserves mentioning.

I play basketball with Matt Citron from Woodward at the Eastlake YMCA, and I swear almost every weekend he comes in there as the only white boy and absolutely booms on somebody cuz they don’t think he can jump. I seen him just messin around and go up and touch the top of his head on the rim. I dont know any videos but dude had to stop playing one time cuz he dunked on this kid and hit his head on the backboard. That Matt is no joke. He can windmill and power 360 dunk off two feet but if he gets a running start and takes off on one leg… game over bruh! he has shut the gym down before haha. No joke dudes just stopped playin after he yams it sometimes!!

My thumbs are up for the white boy, matt citron from woodward. I wouldnt be doing him justice if I tried to describe his dunking but the truth is he can jump through the roof.

Michael, you asked for opinions on Woodward Academy Arlon Harper and Matt Citron. They are good players, but their dunks don’t elicit that shock and awe. Lots of players can dunk but you’re looking for creativity.

Also, I read that you were looking for Metro area dunkers. Wilcox Co. may not be close enough to the Metro Atlanta area (more state of GA). Please confirm.

I have seen Matt Citron play in AAU games, and his dunks definitely elicit “shock and awe” from the crowd. Trust me, I’ve seen jaws drop when he gets up as high as he does for dunks and some pretty awesome blocks, too.

Matt Citron has several dunks in this footage of the top players in GA (tony parker, justin seymour, e. victor nickerson, matt citron, saleem muhamad, mo lewis, maurice gibson at open run atl.) Matt Citron is a strong player overall, very athletic.

When the frog was asked to jump and his answer was: “how high”, He was thinking about Shaquille Johnson from Milton High School. Although this clip shows some “high degree of difficulty” execution – including clearing a 6′ 8″ kid without contact, There is nothing like seeing him live. Check out a Milton basketball game. This is more than jumping. It is low altitude flight.

Woodward has a strong team this year, they’ve got several boys who have had some really nice dunks in games. Harper is a very good ball handler, a consistent high scorer and a pleasure to watch on the court. Citron is a very athleticand intense player who can pull off some pretty spectacular moves on the court. Stanton Davis and Nathan Schultz are solid players with nice shots as well. Jordan Watkins is a force to be reckoned with on the basketball court and on the football field. Michael Hall at 6′9″ is definitely one to watch – you can’t train height! Some of the posted dunks caught on tape are not their most spectacular, give them a chance to show you what they’ve got! And to all of you posting comments, remember that these are all high school kids we are talking about and that this is supposed to be fun!

Shaq Goodwin from SWD. The kid has BOUNCE!!

January 26th, 2011

Arlon Harper is a sleeper in the contest, he has sneaky hops. I’ve seen this kid jump from a step inside the freethrow line to block a shot and dunk on two kids in one day over the summer. I’m not sure how much creativity he has but its only one way to find out.

Rod Perkins, Campbell High School – Smyrna, GA. This kid dunks at least 3 times a game, and at least 2 of them brings the house down. He may not be 7 feet tall, but this kid got hops!!! My vote hands down. I’ve seen him do a 360 dunk last week — blew me away!!!
