Lots to talk about this week …
Miller Grove’s chances for a national title probably slipped away Saturday at Norcross, where Wolverines lost 70-63 to Dr. Krop of Miami.
Miller Grove (16-1) was ranked between No. 2 and No. 4 in four national polls entering the game. Dr. Krop’s star player, Kansas State-bound Angel Rodriguez, scored 16 points and had seven steals, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post’s game story. Miller Grove was only 2-for-9 at the foul line.
MG still could finish in the top 10 or top 5 of the national rankings. It’s been a great season. Dr. Krop is a nationally known program as well, and was ranked No. 24 by ESPN.
Georgia teams did have some nice wins over the weekend otherwise.
In Morgantown, W.Va., Columbia’s boys went 2-0, beating Jamesville-Dweitt 55-40 and Thomas Jefferson 71-57. Both opponents were from new York.
Jamesville-Dewitt’s top player was DuJuan Coleman is rated the No. 2 center among juniors by one recruiting service, but Columbia’s Jamal Reid was game MVP. He scored 16. Against Jefferson, Columbia’s Algie Key scored 19.
Also in Morgantown, South Atlanta beat Christ the King of New York 68-67 on a shot at the buzzer by Rashuad Bell. Nick Jacobs scored 29 for SA. South Atlanta is the new No. 1 team in AA this week despite losing to former No. 1 GAC earlier in the season.
Meanwhile, GAC (13-5) lost to Sagemont, Fla., 75-66 on Saturday at Norcross. Malcolm Brogdon scored 42. Brogdon, a Virginia commit, has been averaging about 34-35 points per game the past couple of weeks against some very good teams.
Nice win by Norcross’ girls over Hoover , Ala., 49-44 on Saturday at Starr’s Mill. Dearica Hamby and Diamond DeShields scored 15 apiece. Norcross and Hoover won their states’ championships in 2010 in the highest classifications.
However, Norcross fell to No. 2 in the AAAAA rankings this week because of its loss to North Gwinnett on Tuesday. North Gwinnett is on a 9-game winning streak and is emerging as a real contender as well in AAAAA.
The new No. 1 is undefeated Hillgrove. The Lady Hawks will have a chance to prove their worthiness this week as they are playing at No. 5 Campbell on Tuesday, at home against No. 3 North Cobb on Friday and at Region 4-AAAAA contender McEachern on Saturday.
And finally, we reneged on our statement from last week that we’d boot Norcross’ boys from the rankings for their 8-9 record. But Norcross has lost to six ranked Georgia teams and three out-of-state teams. All those unranked teams with better records have lost to unranked teams, including Walton, which slipped vs. Pope on Saturday. I know that Norcross is having its problems, but who else is worthy to be ranked in AAAAA? It’s slim-pickins, IMO. I’m pretty confident that if there were a coaches poll of ”Who do you not want to play in the first round of the state playoffs” that Norcross would do pretty well.

Big boy also said “ALL Ballplayer don’t have play for the big team to be a GOOD BALL PLAYER ”
that might be so, and im guessing you’re talking about the milton players being transfers, which would be a little bit more credible if the player you were supporting Kevin haynes didnt transfer to south gwinett which has more of a big name than milton just isnt as succesful as of late.

great post -GET REAL Bradwell Institute, 3-AAAAA and those Savannah schools girl’s team’s don’t play anywhere near the level competition with the Atlanta Metro school’s like Norcross, Buford, Redan, Southwest Dekalb, Chamblee, Stephenson…etc. They will fall by the wayside during the play-offs as has been the case the last 11 year’s. And while we’re at it let’s dispel the myth about the talent level of all the Savannah city boy’s team’s which need to be playing in 3-A. They haven’t been relevant in basketball since 1998 when Savannah High won the state championship.

Can’t think of a team worthy to replace Norcross?? How about checking out Region 4-AAAAA. It is definitely the best region, top to bottom, in the state. The overall records are not eye popping…however, that is mainly because they have beating up on one another within the Region (like the Big East Conference). Every team in the region has an overall winning record except one. You have Campbell ranked…but North Cobb, Harrison, South Cobb, Hillgrove, are also noteworthy.
The AJC covers 3 or 4 teams and thats it. Pretty much expect that is the best you are going to get. Atlanta h.s. basketball deserves better.

Don’t look now, but here come the Allatoona Lady Bucs. They have finished their out of region schedule and now 4-0 in subregion play with a 6 game winning streak. Mr. Holcomb, there is one of the best AAA teams that no one is talking about and no one wants to play!
