New rankings: Hillgrove, South Atlanta move to No. 1 … Miller Grove’s national title hopes fade … How can you rank Norcross?

Lots to talk about this week …

Miller Grove’s chances for a national title probably slipped away Saturday at Norcross, where Wolverines lost 70-63 to Dr. Krop of Miami.

Miller Grove (16-1) was ranked between No. 2 and No. 4 in four national polls entering the game. Dr. Krop’s star player, Kansas State-bound Angel Rodriguez, scored 16 points and had seven steals, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post’s game story. Miller Grove was only 2-for-9 at the foul line.

MG still could finish in the top 10 or top 5 of the national rankings. It’s been a great season. Dr. Krop is a nationally known program as well, and was ranked No. 24 by ESPN.

Georgia teams did have some nice wins over the weekend otherwise.

In Morgantown, W.Va., Columbia’s boys went 2-0, beating Jamesville-Dweitt 55-40 and Thomas Jefferson 71-57. Both opponents were from new York.

Jamesville-Dewitt’s top player was DuJuan Coleman is rated the No. 2 center among juniors by one recruiting service, but Columbia’s Jamal Reid was game MVP. He scored 16. Against Jefferson, Columbia’s Algie Key scored 19.

Also in Morgantown, South Atlanta beat Christ the King of New York 68-67 on a shot at the buzzer by Rashuad Bell. Nick Jacobs scored 29 for SA. South Atlanta is the new No. 1 team in AA this week despite losing to former No. 1 GAC earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, GAC (13-5) lost to Sagemont, Fla., 75-66 on Saturday at Norcross. Malcolm Brogdon scored 42. Brogdon, a Virginia commit, has been averaging about 34-35 points per game the past couple of weeks against some very good teams.

Nice win by Norcross’ girls over Hoover , Ala., 49-44 on Saturday at Starr’s Mill. Dearica Hamby and Diamond DeShields scored 15 apiece. Norcross and Hoover won their states’ championships in 2010 in the highest classifications.

However, Norcross fell to No. 2 in the AAAAA rankings this week because of its loss to North Gwinnett on Tuesday. North Gwinnett is on a 9-game winning streak and is emerging as a real contender as well in AAAAA.

The new No. 1 is undefeated Hillgrove. The Lady Hawks will have a chance to prove their worthiness this week as they are playing at No. 5 Campbell on Tuesday, at home against No. 3 North Cobb on Friday and at Region 4-AAAAA contender McEachern on Saturday.

And finally, we reneged on our statement from last week that we’d boot Norcross’ boys from the rankings for their 8-9 record. But Norcross has lost to six ranked Georgia teams and three out-of-state teams. All those unranked teams with better records have lost to unranked teams, including Walton, which slipped vs. Pope on Saturday. I know that Norcross is having its problems, but who else is worthy to be ranked in AAAAA? It’s slim-pickins, IMO. I’m pretty confident that if there were a coaches poll of ”Who do you not want to play in the first round of the state playoffs” that Norcross would do pretty well.

All people is talking about is milton and miller grove because the kids on them teams play with the big name AAU teams But what people DON’T know is that SOUTH GWINNETT HAS players to they are 15w with 3l’s but they have a PG name KEVIN HAYNES JR THAT PUTS UP NUMBERS LIKE 15P’S 8A’S 5REB’S 3STL’S A game and can PLAY BOTH SIDE OF THE COURT WITH NO PROBLEM. I will love to see him play the boy scott from milton SO people can STOP ALL THIS TALK, He already did Parker this summer in a AAU game in GA. South also have a boy name Davis that is in the 11 grade’ who ia avg around 20p’s with 10 reb’s that will kill Parker on milton with NO PROBLEMS.

How can the AJC not mention nor cover anything about the Sequoyah Chiefs who are ranked #2 in Georgia AAAA classification? Their undefeated record of 19-0 speaks for itself, having already beaten AAAAA powerhouse Pope as well as 7th ranked in the State AAAA Chattahoochee. The Chiefs are lead by Senior Point Guard Sean Tate, 2nd in scoring for AAAA @ 23.8/game (4.9 pts/game better than #1 ranked Miller Grove’s star Tony Parker), Senior Forward Cullen Roberts @ 11.6 pts/game – #22, Junior Guard Solomon Ajose 9.9 pts/game- #32, Senior Swing Guard Zack Chandler 7.8 pts per game #46 & Senior Forward Brandon Alexander 7.5 pts per game – #49. All scoring is per Rankings by MaxPrep Sports and based on the top 150 players in Ga AAAA. Last night (Sat 1/22) Sequoyah beat rival and 2nd in Region 7-AAAA, Creekview in a stunning 2 pt win in front of 1,300 fans at Sequoyah. A little coverage is not a lot to ask for an original Atlanta native!

@ Talmadge Chandler: If you want some serious consideration and coverage like the MGs, Miltons, Columbias, and Wheelers of the world, you need to PLAY SOMEBODY!!! Until then, finishing beating up on the little teams in your area and try to make some noise in the state playoffs.

@talmadge: Can you please tell me who made Pope a powerhouse (also correction Pope is in 4-A classification not 5-A, as you claim)…..I agree with bball72, All the teams mentioned not only have they played the best in Georgia, but have played some of the best in the country. I don’t see Sequoyah beating a MG, Milton, Columbia or Wheelers in state. Don’t see you guys beating an Oak Hill, St. Patrick, Winter Park or anybody in the top 100 who are ranked nationally.

@Todd: I could see your point with Norcross. After evaluating every region and the schedule they play, it is pretty much slim pickings to make an argument for anyone else to be worthy of top 10 cosideration.

Laney is the ony team in AA UNDEFEATED why aren't they #1

Wow Laney snubbed again, the Laney boys should be #1, if only for a week.

I saw Sequoyah play earlier this season and they seemed to play to the level of the competition. Elite teams assert themselves and take command of the games they should win. Yes, they are talented and may do well in the post season but not at the level of the Miller Groves and Miltons of the state. Best of luck to them but agree they needed to step up the schedule this year to ready themselves for the caliber of teams they will see in late February and possibly early March.

talmadge, neither the AJC nor any of the posters on here are ever going to give credit to a team full of white kids that does not have a transfer or recruit among them. Sequoyah will have to settle things in the post season.

whoa whoa, bigboy, slow down. catch your breath. I,m sure your pg from SG is a good baller, but you’re talknig about the best backcourt in the country. Ask Oak Hill. Ask Winter Park. Ask Austin Rivers. He DOES NOT want to see Dai Jon Parker again on a bball court. Praise your kid, but don’t discredit yourself by smacktalking Parker and Scott. They are proven.

I think Sequoyah is getting shafted, but this is new territory for Sequoyah boys basketball. The paper you should really be ticked off with is the Cherokee Tribune, which hardly ever has anything in there about them. I’ve seen the Chiefs play many times this year. The atmosphere Saturday night was the best I’ve seen in many years of watching games at Sequoyah. However, the team seemed uptight, and under a lot of pressure. I wouldn’t want the publicity right now. If you truly are good enough the publicity will come. I just say treat each game like another season. I’m on the outside looking in, but it seems the pressure of being undefeated is taking it’s toll on the team. Just play them and have fun folks. If you lose one it’s not going to be the end of the world.

As far as Sequoyah playing a tougher schedule when the almighty GHSA puts you in an 11 team REgion, and you have to play 14 Region games it does not leave room for many openings. Then they are forced to play all county schools twice, plus they have had a great rivalry with Pope for a couple of years now, so the schedule is not really much they can control. As the above mentioned, these tournaments are invitation only stuff, and Sequoyah is a homegrown team doing things the right way and not Cheating, yes cheating in recruiting like the other powers of the world. I also agree with ChiefSupporter. Let’s the kids enjoy the moment. THey did seem very tight Saturday night, and from what I heard Friday as well. Still quite a feet for a school that hasn’t been heard from since the early 90’s

“Nice win by Norcross’ girls over Hoover , Ala., 49-44 on Saturday at Starr’s Mill. Dearica Hamby and Diamond DeShields scored 15 apiece. @bigboy south gwinnet lost to marietta, milton exposed marietta every year in the playoffs. South gwinnett beat northview by 5 milton beat them by 54. I would think twice before calling out specific players also. South gwinnett simply does not want that problem.

i stated that the PG at SG can deal with any PG IN THE STATE OF GA AND NO HE NOT MY FAMILY I just know what I’m seeing down here and the only player you all talk about is the once that PAY TO PLAY WITH THE BIG AAU TEAMS BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO HART TO PLAY AGAINST THE BEST. The St.P G cook is a player but it.s the school and not his game I’m from up north and i have watched ST.P for yrs not just this yrs and had family that play with them. River is not a PG for all you who think that he will be playing SG next with IRIVING who I know from ST.P. and for you Burr the games you talking about SG pg was not playing because he was sick. He already did one of your boyz at milton and with have NO PROBLEM WITH SCOTT if they meet. Parker is a better all around ball player not scott and the last thing is he is the only SR that start for SG with 10 and 11 graders and look at what they doing.

Great to see the Sequoyah Chiefs doing great things on the hardwood! To be fair to the AJC – SHS being good at basketball is a very new thing…and they will have to earn respect to get the love. When I was in school, and the years following, the team was an utter joke.

Let’s just hope this is a sign of things to come. One thing I’ve learned about HS Bball – having the athletes helps tremendously – but the right coach, and the right system, can take a team to greatness.

“Mr Holcomb regarding Norcross being in the top ten with 8-9 record i know its hard ranking the teams but alpharetta high in 6-AAAAA is 13-4 with some top tens wins Norcross only quality win is against Collins Hill.”

We definitely looked at Alpharetta. That’s a good team, although I note there’s been a 30-point loss to South Gwinnett. I don’t think anybody can beat Norcross by 30. Big game tonight for the blue devils – Peachtree Ridge.

re: Sequoyah – I might check up on them for an AJC story. Maybe a good story would be ”best five teams nobody is talking about.” I agree they deserve some attention. But I also agree that the those schools that are winning in national events are getting attention for good reason. We’ll see in the playoffs, but I suspect Sequoyah is going to struggle keeping up with Miller Grove. So will everyone else.

January 25th, 2011
3:00 pm

i never stated that Scott was not a good ballplayer, I DO THINK HES’ A GOOD BALLPLAYER BUT I KNOW THAT KEVIN IS A MOST BETTER PG. Look who scott is playing with and that PARKER who play the better g on the other teams not scott and that why I THINK PARKER IS A BETTER ALL AROUND PLAYER ON THAT TEAM. The last thing is this that Kevin play Def on the PG-SG-AND SMALL FORWARDS. Ask the school he played LIKE TUCKER LIKE Alpharetta and GAC how he lock that PG up and put the ball in the hoop on them. Ask the teams he play this summer in aau. I seen him and that kid Kevin Ware a few yrs ago play together and NO ONE could deal with them. He also played with the big boy from miller grove not Tony Parker but the other big boy in a all star game not this summer but the one before summer and went at Rice son they have it on cd.

The Sequoyah team is 19-0 with huge wins over Chattahoochee and Pope. Not taking anything away from Miller Grove or the other great Georgia teams, these boys can play with them. We should be proud of the fact that Georgia is becoming one of the hot beds for ball players. Sean Tate, the #1 scorer in Region 4 and #4 scorer in the state is one of the top 3 PG’s in the state. His training with Marc Edwards, (Ryan Harrow’s trainer), has made him unstoppable. The team has been playing together 7 years and is well coached by a young coach. Keep an eye out for these kids because I think they will surprise you.

January 25th, 2011
3:12 pm

what does most better mean?

“They have it on cd” does that mean we can only listen to what is taken place?

Dai-Jon Parker is labeled by many EXPERTS as the best defensive player in the nation so him guarding the other team’s best guard makes a little sense. I’m not sure why you are tyring to change it to Parker being better than Scott because they are two different players.

I’m not understanding why you are listing the players Kevin played with, especially since they arent the same caliber of the players from milton plays with. parker “went at rice (Glen)” about 3 times his sophmore year and that is actually on video.

Scott and parker were both invited to represent the south in Nike’s USA global challenge where they won gold and had teammates such as adonis thomas, pj hairston, kentavious cladwell, which are all better than donte williams if thats who your referring to.

long story short you dont speak english and your posts are stupid and ignorant.

Such a shame that SE Georgia HS sports doesn’t get much coverage by the AJC. The Bradwell Institute HS girls basketball team is flying high this year @ 18-0. They are in the same region with the likes of Savannah, Beach, Jenkins and Johnson, with traditionally above average girls basketball teams. This years team is particularly well-developed fundamentally with a smart PG and toughness in the paint. Last years team was no fluke @ 29-2, losing in the state quarterfinals to eventual runnerup Redan. I hope we stay the States best-kept secret as tournament time is near. Do your thing Coach Faye. Granger By Marriage: Good try with Region 3-AAAAA and Bradwell Institute, but the reality of it is that both are very below average. They are just feasting on bad competition in the area to make their record look so impressive. It shows in the state playoffs that they are below average when they meet some real competition.
The last four years for Bradwell:
2009-10: lost 71-50 to Redan
2008-09: lost 59-49 to Redan
2007-08: lost 71-21 to Stephenson
2006-07: lost 59-48
That is an average of 25 points. PATHETIC. Should we look at how bad Savannah, Jenkins, Beach and Johnson do. While 29 games against BAD COMPETITION is not impressive.
