The AJC is looking for a few good men — ones on high school basketball teams that can dunk with the best of them.

Yes, it’s about that time of year again for one our most popular events: The AJC Slam Dunk Contest.

Past participants have included NBA lottery pick Derrick Favors, UGA all-star Travis Leslie and last year’s Mr. Georgia Basketball (Westlake’s Marcus Thornton).

Do you know a local high school basketball player who is a prolific dunker? Someone who dunks with such a smooth style that it causes fans from BOTH teams to rise to their feet? That’s the guy we want.

If you do know of someone with these superman qualities, please post their name, high school, and your description of their dunking capabilities below. You will also get extra points for linking any video in your below post of one of that particular player’s best slam.

We’re looking for a few good men for the upcoming AJC Slam Dunk Contest and we’ll have more details next week.

For now, let the buzz begin …

Kevin Ware, of Rockdale County, probably has the most poster dunks in the state. Check him out on YouTube. He has been putting on dunk showcases @ camps all summer long. He was even on one of the USA Junior Teams. He’s signed with Tennessee as well. Give him a invite. You won’t be disappointed.

If LJ Erves from Fayette County High School doesn’t participate, it would be a shame. I can’t figure out why Fayette County doesn’t get more attention, there by far the best team on the southside of Atlanta.

Guys watch some of the videos. It will take more than a guy who can just dunk to win the contest. Watching the videos first will help you vote for the best dunker.

Johnson & Marshall were very good. Johnson in a contest and Marshall in a game. Two others were leaving a lot to be desired.

Football player attitudes on basketball players. I hope they have cops(many) at these games. Saw the Nick Marshell video. Damn a Hockey game or street fight tried to breakout at a Basketball game.

I’m going to have to go with Shaquille Johnson (Milton). After watching him dunk in the City of Palms Classic dunk contest; I’m convinced he’s a force to be reckoned with. When you speak of a player that has fans from BOTH teams rise to their feet after a monstrous dunk; you’re speaking of Mr. Johnson. For example: During the championship game against St Patrick, Shaquille Johnson drove Baseline and threw down a tremendous dunk over six foot ten Dakari Johnson. If you watch and listen to the crowds response you will agree that Shaquille Johnson deserves mentioning.

Kenneth Gaines JR of Whitefield Academy for a 6′3″ player he has made hops and dunks on small or big players it does not matter he is worht the hype. In the Atlanta vs Memphis Classic he was on the left wing and and attacked the basket on the Memphis High Center who is 6′8″ and made a highlight reel out of him.

Darius Beresford from Lovejoy High School is one of the most explosive and creative dunkers I have ever seen. At 6′1” he has and asortment of dunks that are definitely jaw dropping. He is a natural showman that will keep the crowd on the edge of thier seats during each phase of the contest. My prediction is that Mr. Beresford will be this years slam dunk champion. A must see!

I dont see how people dont feel stupid posting a video after shaq johnsons is up there. Johnson listed at 6′4 people said the kid from whitfield was 6′3 and “dunked on a kid 6′8″ Johnson jumped over a kid 6′9. In Marshall’s video his best dunk was a windmill, Johnson preformed a 360 windmill. The other video of johnson at COP he dunks on a kid 6′10 with ease. During AAU he broke a rim because he dunked it so hard. not a rim at a middle school which shouldve been replaced but at 1 of the best facilities for AAU.
