Talking points: Milton beats Oak Hill, state’s best backcourts, new rankings

Milton’s David Boyd talked about national titles before this basketball season began. It might be too late for that, given Milton’s two losses, but Boyd’s Eagles made a statement Saturday, beating No. 1-ranked Oak Hill Academy 75-69.

Despite not getting to practice for a week due to the Georgia snowstorm, Milton (14-2) jumped to a 20-point lead in the first half and held on.

Oak Hill fought back and led 51-50 after a 3-point shot by Jordan Adams, the transfer from Central Gwinnett, but Milton went on an 8-0 run to seal it. Guard Shannon Scott, who has signed with Ohio State, scored 22 points.

Milton’s victory also was good news for Miller Grove (13-0). MG is ranked #3 in one national poll and #4 in two others. With Oak Hill out of the way, and with a victory over Milton in December, Miller Grove is now a serious national title contender. MG is playing in Ohio on Monday.

Back to Milton for a minute – Boyd said after the Oak Hill win that he thoguht his backcourt of DaiJon Parker and Shannon Scott was the best in Georgia.

My question for you – Who are the best backcourts in Georgia this year? And of all-time? Are Scott & Parker as good as South Gwinnett’s Mercer and Williams from 2005? What about Harrow and Rice Jr. in 2008? Another good one: Tiller, Florence, Gonzalvez of Wheeler a few years back. All three had outstanding college careers.

What are the best backcourts in 2010?

My votes would go to William Avery (Duke) and Ricky Moore (UCONN) circa 95 from Westside Augusta along with…..
Raymond Harrison (UGA), Atiba Prater (Vandy) and EJ. (Can’t remember his last name) from Dunwoody’s state title team that beat Shareef Abdur Rahim’s Wheeler team.

Tough to keep Campbell boys at no. 3 after they lost last night to Marietta, who was 3-11 coming into the game.

We’ve dropped Campbell to #5. We did the rankings earlier than normal today and weren’t sure which games were played and which weren’t.

Todd – What ever happened to Mike Mercer? I know he got into some trouble at UGA, but never heard anything from him again. Speaking of great backcourts…D.A. Layne of Wheeler High School (94-98). That Wildcat group never won a state championship player, but Layne could take over a game with his outside shot and precise passing to leaper Antwan Dixon.

So do they play basketball south of Atlanta? Or do the voters in your polls watch any of it? Aside from Bainbridge, Vidalia, and Thomasville, there aren’t any southern teams in your polls, in any classification! Give me a break. You guys need to get out and watch some ball.

Laney’s biggest LISTED player is 6ft2.lol!! Are you serious dude South Atlanta would mop the floor with them lil boys. Yall good, 4 Augusta, but we got D-1 ball player’s over here not 6′2 power forwards. Nick Jacobs, Dominique McKoy and Rashaud Bell would eat them MIDGETS alive! Our 2Guard is 6ft3 is Naquavious King. All these boys play above the rim.

idk about the other classifications, but the reason why AAAAA has few south teams in its poll is that no south team has won the AAAAA state playoffs since its inception. In fact only one south team has managed to make it to the since 2005 and thats Beach in 2006.

I’d have to go w/ Ray Harrison, Atiba Prater & EJ Jacobs of Dunwoody High School! They led they’re team to an undefeated 30-win season and state championship. Also, Shernard Long (Georgetown & GA State) & Darryl Labarrie (Florida A&M & GA Tech) of Tucker High School who also led their team to the state championship.

Laney hasn’t played any great teams. we will see how they do this week in swainboro. the coach like to run the score up on teams. maybe if he get to the state play off, he will see that a soft schedule will not test your team.

I agree with most of the posters here…the South always claims some sort of Metro bias when reporting on baskebtall teams. The South needs to WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP! How do you consider the South has the better teams when the Metro has won what…at a minimum the last 10 years (Norcross, Wheeler, Milton).

Laney was 29-2 last season but lost to GAC by 25 points in the semifinals. I know Laney is a good team, but it doesn’t make sense to me to punish GAC and South Atlanta for playing a MUCH tougher schedule than Laney’s.

There are more than just those. Monroe of Albany, Wilcox County and Lanier County are in south Georgia. So is Bradwell Institute. Girls teams from Savannah Christian, Calvary Day, Bryan County and Westover are ranked.

But those expecting all parts of the state to be equally represented haven’t looked at the results of the state tournament the past few years. Metro ATL does pretty well.

There are three. The AP issues its first rankings last week and probably will publish TUE or WED this week. There also is a Georgia coaches poll. It’s also not out this week.

If there;s a better backcourt in the country this year I haven’t seen it. I have seem many of the top 20. Also, Milton has really come together since its loss to Miller Grove. I say someone put on a mythical state championship between MG and Milton a week after State. Have it at GAC and charge 20 to get in (under 16 free). Wouldn’t it be something if they finish the year 1-2 in the country in a couple polls. Georgia is ballin…

Why is East Laurens not ranked? They have beaten Vidalia and have only lost to the #2 Wilkinson County. East Laurens boys team is good enough and consistent enough to be ranked in the top 10.

You say that Campbell should drop down in rankings due to recent loss to Marietta. However, you forgot to mention that the current # 3 team (South Gwinnett) also loss to Marietta this season – in the SEBA Hoop Festival right before Christmas.

The Wheeler backcourt of 2004 with Gonzalvez, Curry, Florence, and Tiller was hands down the best in recent memory.

I haven’t seen Terrell play, but I’ve got to think they’re legit. The lone loss was to a ranked AAA team. They went OT last year w/ Whitefield and beat Wilkinson. It’s a program that everyone respects.

Good point. I think EL might have been overlooked in all the polls. Of course, I see they lost Tuesday to Dodge, but that was after the rankings had been done. Probably a team that should be watched a little closer.

great stuff guys. I wish I had been around to see some of these teams/players from the past. Was in VA. Saw some great talent in greater Hampton Roads area, but no where near the depth of metro ATL Not close. What a ballin treat living here.
Any thoughts on the Wheeler/Milton game coming up next week? haven’t seen Wheeler this year. Can they catch lightning in a bottle and beat Milton – or does Milton need to have a really off night for that to happen?

Lets see, 3-3 against national teams, 3-3 against their own region and 4-6 total against Ga. teams. A record of 7-9 and in 4th place in their own region and Norcross is still ranked in the top 10. How can we put any value to these rankings. I understand Norcross had high hopes in the beginning of the season, but c’mon fellas lets go to the records.

Todd Holcomb

January 20th, 2011
4:20 pm

I agree, it’s time for Norcross to drop out. However, one of the losses was this week, before the rankings were compiled.

Further, here are the six losses to Georgia teams –

#1 Milton, #2 Wheeler,#4 Collins Hill, #6 North Gwinnett, #7 Peachtree Ridge and #4 SWD (AAAA) — all by SIX POINTS or less.

At some point, you’ve got to beat some of those teams to stay in the Top 10, but I can’t say that Norcross has peformed much below what you’d expect of a #8 team given the schedule.

rudbuck1

January 21st, 2011
11:26 am

Got nothing against Norcross, but you said it yourself. At some point, they have to beat some of those teams, but they haven’t and until they do (They actually are 1-6 against those teams, they beat Collins Hill by 8 points). I would not put them in the top 10. I am not saying they are not a quality team, but they have to prove it on the court. Good teams win close games and they have yet to prove that. I would have them in that 11-15 bubble group, teams on the border that need a thing or 2 to prove they belong. My belief is that they can, not just yet today.

Just one mans opinion.
