All-class tournament: Who would you pick?

For a couple of years in the 1970s, the GHSA put on a four-team tournament of champions after the traditional state basketball tournament.

For some reason, it was a boys only event. In 1973, Southwest Macon with Norm Nixon beat Southwest Atlanta with Tony Flanagan. Southwest Atlanta won the next year by beating College Park in the final.

What would happen if we had a tournament of champions in 2011? Most of the top teams aren’t afraid to play each other in the regular season. Miller Grove’s boys, the No. 1 team in AAAA, has played and beaten No. 1 Milton of AAAAA and No. 1 Columbia of AAA.

Norcross’ girls beat No. 1 Wesleyan of Class A, and Wesleyan is playing No. 2 Buford of AA later this season.

Is that enough, or would it be a huge event if the state champions played a tournament the weekend after? Who would win?

don’t count out columbia. they would have beat miller grove had not the official went and added more time on the clock and bogus calls against columbia for no apparent reason.

I’ve seen Miller Grove play many times this year and i cant really tell exactly how good they are. Yes I know they beat Milton (I was at the game) and yes they did win the Beach Ball Classic. All great stuff. But I watched their games during the BBC and I have to say although they won, at no point did I think they were heads and shoulders above their competition. They dont shoot the ball particularly well, at least not in the 4 games ive seen this year. The thing that does make them tough is their length. Tony Parker is amazing at taking up space in the middle. And those other big guys arent bad either.

I would take Miller Grove in a track-meet style game because they are very good in transition. but if it came down to a half-court style game, Id still probably take Milton just because I dont think Miller Grove shoots the ball well enough from the perimeter.

Not a bad idea. 5A and 4A boys would dominate. No way A and AA could run with those guys. Girls would probably be wide open. I’d like to see this in football as well.

I think it depends who make a run at the end of the tournment. I think a southern team will be in there. But overall, maybe Milton boys and Buford girls.

Why not take the final 4 in each division and start a new tourney and have an one true championship.

Milton boys in triple OT over MG.
Buford girls (woulda been Norcross if not for the transfer loss – saw her last year, she is seriously good).

All of Alaska is looking forward to seeing Columbia in the Alaska Airlines Classic starting tomorrow. The field is loaded with great teams including West Anchorage, the reigning Alaska state champion.

Miller Grove over Milton in the boys final…Mitlon has no bench. Miller Grove plays good defense and seem to find a way to win the close games. The first match up wasn’t close between these two, MG dominated much of the second half. Wouldn’t count out Columbia, they have great coaching and play big in big games.

Not sure about the girls, I know Norcross is still loaded even with losing their top player from last year, to Buford. I’ll go with Norcross…

Yes an All Class Tournament would be Great if you go to they rank the to teams in the state. If they were to play in a tournament I would have to say the Final 5 would be Boys Class A Whitefield Academy, Class AA Greater Atlanta Christian, Class AAA Columbia, Class AAAA Miller Grove, Class AAAAA Milton, Girls Final 5 would be Class A Wesleyan, Class AA Buford, Class AAAA Washington County, Class AAAA Redan, Class AAAAA Norcross.

You Create a Bracket by drawing the names out of a hat and then let them play head to head
Alot of the top programs are afraid to play the top teams in the lower Classifications. It is good that Class A Wesleyan (A developed team with good coaches) got a chance to play Class AAAAA Norcross (a recruited team with a good coach) and only lost to them by 1 point.
If they were to play that is a big IF the brackets on the girls side would look like this 1st round would be Class AAA Washington County vs Class AA Buford with Buford Winning Class AAAA Redan vs Class AAAAA Norcross With Redan Winning Class A Wesleyan would get the by just because of the number of Championships second round wold be Class A Wesleyan Playing Class AAAA Redan with Wesleyan winning then Class AA Buford playing Class A Wesleyan with Wesleyan winning.
The Boys side would line up like this Class A Whitefield VS Class AAA Columbia with Whitefield Academy winning, Class AAAAA Milton VS Class AA GAC with Milton Winning, Class AAA Miller Grove gets the bye to to its higher State rank and National Rank Second Round Class A Whitefield vs Class AAA Miller Grove with Miller Grove Winning Final Round Class AAAAA Milton playing Class AAA Miller Grove playing in rematch with Class AAA Miller Grove as the State Champion. Just a thought.

The only true state champion is having one state champ. Only Kentucky does it right with approx 20,000 witnessing the Sweet 16 to determine ONE state champ, men and women. Indiana was the last to fold a couple years ago.

All the classes just dilute the real champion. Only a yearly winner takes all is the way to go. Check Milan, Indiana and Cuba, Kentucky and Sheldon Clark, last years very small school that won in Kentucky. I’ve lived in five states and having the four or five class champions play for one is the only way to go.

Then being State Champion means something!!!
