Final rankings blog: We agree on No. 1

Metro Atlanta teams won four state titles for the first time since 1970.  As recently as 2005, metro teams didn’t win any.

What does this mean? Probably that metro Atlanta won’t win any in 2015. The South will rise again. But metro Atlanta is only getting bigger.

Also, Camden County, Northside and Charlton County aren’t ranked. The last time that’s happened – with all three unranked in the end – was 1993.

I doubt that means anything either, unless we should do a better job in preseason rankings. All started No. 1.

The final rankings are very difficult to settle on this season, especially in AAAAA and AAAA, when so many top teams got toppled unexpectedly.

Congrats to Brookwood, Chattahoochee, Sandy Creek, Buford and Clinch County.

Well another season of High School football has come and gone. The State Championship games provided us with some awesome matchups again this year. The Carrolton vs Sandy Creek was a great one, along with the Burfor/Calhoun game. Sure wish Starrs Mill could of scored some points to make it a better game. I’m already looking forward to next season. our East Paulding Raiders will once again field another great team next year. This years starters were young and very talented. Coach Reid and the coaches will once again have the team prepared to go through yet another season filled with ups and downs. I wish everyone the best in the off season and I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Years.

@ WarEagle

How right you are with Georgia being a football state!! I close my ears for the remainder of the year because I am allergic to basketball.

I always tell my kids that “next season starts tomorrow.”

The 2011 season of high school football started on 12/13/2010.

(I Sunday off because we needed the day or rest. Not only because the Big Man upstairs did it long ago when creating the world, but because I was freaking tired!!)

As a diehard Sandy Creek fan I have to disagree with the analysis that we will be loaded next year. First, SC is losing the leader at each of the critical skill positions on O; QB, RB, WR. Second, Cole is not ready to lead this team back to a state championship this upcoming year. I think he’ll be a very good QB with a strong arm but he still needs time to develop. We’re talking about a kid who’s a freshman, he’ll be fine given the time. You can watch a repeat of the Fayette County game on demand from Comcast in which he played the whole game for a suspended Ronnie Bell. FC was a terrible team (great band) this year and there wasn’t anything impressive about that game. His mop up duty in other games isn’t fair to judge as he was only there for game experience and winding down the clock. Third, the O line was good this year but not great so having them back isn’t a dominate force but will be nice. I felt Carrollton’s D line dominated them in the run and pass game for most of the time. It’s great having DA be able to bust some big runs with his speed but overall they didn’t open up many holes for a “loaded” O line and Ronnie’s mobility will surely be missed as he could always find a way to escape and keep a play alive. Just trying to be a realist here. You’ll still see me at every game next year and I’ll be Cole’s and the rest of the teams’ biggest fan but they’ll need more time as a unit. I’d love to say we’ll be back in the dome next year but I feel we may come up a couple games short of that though. Go Creek!

I said “solid” not “loaded.” I agree that the QB position will be a challenge. But by my count, we will be returning 15 starters including the entire O-line and D-line except 1. Our freshman team was great this year as well. They put a hurtin’ on Newnan, a AAAAA school. I view the graduation of great talent as simply an opportunity for new talent to show itself. Look at 2009 to 2010. Sandy Creek is becoming and will continue to be a magnet for football talent in the area. I think some people will base housing decisions on this.

I say Sandy Creek will win the region next year undefeated and we will see when it comes to the playoffs

Go Creek!.

I’m with you Patriot Power. I was just saying I don’t think we’ll be as good as this years team with having to replace so much of the offensive yards. I do believe this is a talented group who will win alot of ballgames the next few seasons. The freshman should be proud of the way they’ve played even going back to their Flat Rock days. I see no reason to believe they won’t run through the season without much struggle next year although a bad game wouldn’t be a total surprise with the youth that will be playing. I’m just concerned the experience factor in the playoffs could be the problem against someone. I sure hope I’m wrong and I’m already looking forward to next season. Can’t wait to see these young men mature and carry on the tradition. Go Creek!

I enjoyed meeting a lot of fans, particularly from Clinch, Colquitt, Savannah at the Omni Hotel during the weekend of the games. I also met two very nice Northside fans. Tommy Palmer and his son, a long time friend of mine, also spent some time with us in the hotel’s lobby restaurant.

The games were all good. I especially felt sorry for Calhoun – and all the losing teams, but Buford scored when it counted. If Colquitt could just somehow find some defense, and not make so many turnovers! Brookwood is well coached and played an awesome game! man can that guy kick! Sandy Creek hit as hard as I’ve seen any team hit this year.

I watched most of the last two games from the sidelines. It really was nice to be that close to the action.

I was very disapointed in the Dome for not opening up the mezzanine level of seats. Fans there to watch all of the games, and not particularly with a certain team (not wanting to sit -or stand- with that team between the 20 yard lines) had to either sit in the end zone or be constantly bothered by people getting up out of their seats and moving to seats closer behind their teams. The isles in the corner sections were constantly full of people moving back and forth.

In past years most fans and high school coaches there to watch more than one game usually sat in the middle level of seats (mezzanine level) but could not this year because they had it closed. More than a few fans, including superintendents, assistant school superintendents, principals, and coaches told me they were going to compain to the GHSA. Hope it does some good. There is an awful amount of talk going on, in part fueled by recent AJC articles and surveys, to have the games moved back to the schools.

Congrats to all the winners.

Where is Camden ? St. Thomas and Miami Central are playing in the Florida State Championship Game

Bronco Billy

December 14th, 2010

Camden County let the whole state of Georgia down when they were humiliated by St. Thomas. The Brookwood Broncos would have destroyed St. Thomas. Then Camden County was humiliated again when they were beaten by Hillgrove a relatively new program in Powder Springs. Camden County plays in a powderpuff region. When they play anyone else, they get a beat down. They would be hard pressed to beat Brookwoods Freshman team.

Rankings are no more than to get you folks all in an uproar about who is ranked. The only ranking at the end of the day is who won the state title in each division. That’s the only number 1 team PERIOD! I wouldn’t read to much into these rankings until the football gets cranked back up in Spring when you can see which teams has what football players returning. There are some teams ranked that will loose alot of talent and their are some teams not ranked that will gain some talent. So please people don’t get in an uproar. Congrats on the Champions of all classifications this 2010 year!

For the guy who says Buford can’t compete at the AAA, AAAA, & AAAAA levels… I absolutely do NOT agree with you about their AAA competition skills. AAAA & AAAAA are a different story because we don’t see Buford play those teams.

But look in recent years versus higher class opponents.

2007 – 35-7 over Herbstreit of Ohio Class AAAAA.
2007 – 40-0 over Cartersville.
2008 – 42-21 over Mansfield-Timberview of Texas Class AAAA.
2008 – 45-14 over North Hall.
2009 – 51-0 over Grovetown.
2009 – 35-7 over North Hall.
2009 – 41-7 over Thomson.
2010 – 40-19 over Gainesville.

Now, save Grovetown, all these teams are well respected in their classifications, and states. Give me a break about Buford not being able to compete in high classes.

@ Patriot Power and SC fan….I think Walker will be the Qb next year and I was told that Hilton will be our running back and he was much more explosive than Alexander. We had a freshman wide receiver this year who is going to be just as good as Chisum and always keep in mind that our O-line will be in their third year as starters. Definitely region champs but we may struggle in the playoffs if we are lacking speed.

@ the haterssss…………PLEASE lay off Burke County, we all should know that you can’t win just standing around on the field. The Bears played every time they stepped on the field just like every other team. They deserve to be ranked in the top 5, (1) especially with most of the starters coming back next season. (2) Burke beat Cedar Grove 45-20, and look who Cedar Grove beat in the playoff. (3) Baldwin was ranked higher than Burke in the 2nd round, and the Bears won that game. And with Carrollton, Burke had some key players with injuries that couldn’t stop Carrollton. Burke did move the ball several times deep in Carrollton territory but made too many mistakes. But, watchout Burke will return stronger and better……………..

Who determined the final ranking needs to go back and check the blackboard. Even Griffin (10-2), Dutchtown (11-2) and East Paulding (10-3)should have been ahead of Brunswick at 8-4. Is this April fool alread. Ware Co. should be the team to beat next year in AAAA because they only lose a few player almost everyone coming back. GO WARE GATORS 2011.

@ Region 8-AAA: Anyone who says Buford can’t compete in higher classifications hasn’t been paying attention. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the Wolves have proven time after time that they can strap up and go smashmouth with anyone, at any level.

Don’t know why anyone has reason to hate on Burke, either. Coach Parker is as good as they come and has done an outstanding job there. Burke will continue to field solid teams and will continue to be overlooked by people outside the region right up into December every year…..

Camden made Brookwood and every other AAAAA school look bad by losing to St Thomas. Camden needs to come up and play a schedule like Gwinnett teams or Loundes/Valdosta play. They’re in a powder puff region. They fold up against better competition. Camden is an embarassment to AAAAA football.

The feeder teams have been stacked for years, and this is the first year of varsity play for the beginning of that wave… This upcoming freshman class will be state champions- all things staying equal- in three years at minimum… No love for Whitewater…

I believe it will be a relief for Camden Cty, Northside-WR, Peach Cty, Carve-Col. and Charlton Cty not to go into the 2011 season ranked #1. Every opponent play these teams like they are the Dallas Cowboys (bad record). It will be good for them to stay under the radar with less pressure. Look out Brookwood, Hooch, Creek, Buford (they can play with anyone and win) etc. I will be surprised if Tucker doesn’t win AAAA ( well, I was this year also). Is Fayette Cty now the strongest football cty? Two state champions from a small Cty. WOW!

GoPackGo, you must not have seen the game. Everytime Brookwood touched the ball, they scored. That’s why the yardage looks so skewed. Yes, the packers had 4 turnovers but turnovers are caused by hard hitting, good defense and Brookwood capitalized on those turnovers. Face it, Brookwood has a great team and beat you fair and square. Actually the game was not as close as it looked. Look for Brookwood to repeat as State Champions next year. And remember, nobody remembers who came in second. You are starting to sound like Camden County. Now that’s an over-rated team. They didn’t even finish in the top ten. Bwhaaaaaa!
