Final rankings blog: We agree on No. 1
1:30 pm December 12, 2010, by GHSF Daily
Metro Atlanta teams won four state titles for the first time since 1970. As recently as 2005, metro teams didn’t win any.
What does this mean? Probably that metro Atlanta won’t win any in 2015. The South will rise again. But metro Atlanta is only getting bigger.
Also, Camden County, Northside and Charlton County aren’t ranked. The last time that’s happened – with all three unranked in the end – was 1993.
I doubt that means anything either, unless we should do a better job in preseason rankings. All started No. 1.
The final rankings are very difficult to settle on this season, especially in AAAAA and AAAA, when so many top teams got toppled unexpectedly.
Congrats to Brookwood, Chattahoochee, Sandy Creek, Buford and Clinch County.

Burke county plays no one in the regular season but washington county, they had easy bracket got past baldwin and crisp by one point beat cedar grove and got demolished by carrollton, so explain why they deserve to be #5 when there are better teams under them

Atl Ball Fan: Really bro? Shall I school thee in the truths of high school football (assuming of course that you played at some point… from the sound of it probably not). I’ll just say one of the many glaring facts. Burke County was a semi finalist. Period. End of discussion. A win is a win and a loss is a loss. The Bears were one of the final 4 so number 5 is the least they deserve… P.S. how is it such an easy bracket when a strong favorite in Gainseville got booted? Funny how people’s views change now. Go back and read the posts and blogs about some of the teams from the “weak” bracket that the Bears came out of. I’ll continue if I have to, but the final 4 is the final 4.

Where is Clarke Central in the 4A rankings? Undefeated during regular season (including shutout of then #6 Flowery Branch), top 3 the entire season and lost one game in the 2nd round (mainly because 3 defensive starters were out). The Gladiators also have D1 prospects Martay Mattox, Alan Posey, and (JR) Quenshaun Watson

Well, don’t know about a dirty jock, but Marist would love the chance to compete with Buford every year. Great team, great competition. I am sure Marist could hold its own, but let’s strap it on and find out! Buford deserves nothing but praise for its high-level program.

Well for any of us that enjoy HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL this was a great weekend! Watched the Saturday games on TV (Thanks GPB) but went to the THRASHERS game on friday night at Phillips and was able to get to the dome for the last 10+ minutes of the CHATTAHOOCHEE / STARRS MILL game.
By this point in the game it was all but decided, CHATTAHOOCHEE looked VERY GOOD! I don’t know if it was the fact that they didn’t have a 100% healthy Laskey playing or what but the STARRS MILL team I watched the time I was there did NOT look like the same team that dominated our EAST PAULDING RAIDERS a few weeks ago!
There seemed to be a good crowd on BOTH sides with CHATTAHOOCHEE having maybe a few more folks..anyway they were LOUD! Classy act by the HOOCH coach who near the end of the game went ON THE FIELD to get a player who was trying to fight a STARRS MILL player (don’t know what started it, doesn’t matter), coach took him off the field, gave him an earfull and let him pace up and down behind the bench the rest of the game!
CONGRAT’S to both teams as it takes a LOT to get this far and these two teams (as well as all the others who played) deserve a HUGE GOOD JOB GUYS!
As for the final rankings in AAAA I don’t know about BRUNSWICK being ranked as high as you have them and WHERE is CLARKE CENTRAL? They were undefeated until EAST PAULDING beat them in the playoffs and they are not even in the top 10 now??? but a BRUNSWICK team with 4 LOSSES is???
Hope everyone on the blog enjoyed the season, let’s get ready for next year!!!!
and my final 2010 season…TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

I can assure you that Marist will hold no ones dirty jock strap!!! I believe Buford is a great quality program in football that could compete in a larger classification, but they would not dominate like they have been doing in AA. The fact of the matter is Marist plays up in all sports and competes very well with quite a few Championships to their credit in multiple sports and Buford has the same option to play up an “A” or two but choose not to. If you think you hang in AAAA or AAAAA there is only one way to find out, play an entire season in it not just a pre-season scrimmage.

This still doesn’t change Atlanta’s place as the worst major city high school football in America. I will give you Brookwood & Grayson (top two ranked metro Atlanta AAAAA schools) along with Chattachoochee & Starr’s Mill (top two ranked metro Atlanta AAAA schools) and you can go to any major city in this nation. I am talking about Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, etc. and I find it highly unlikely that either metro Atlanta school would win a game.
In the meantime, I will take programs like Northside-Warner Robins, Camden County, Lowndes County, etc. to practically any big city, small town, suburban, or farm with 100 yards of open space, and you are going to see Georgia programs that represent.
Congratulations to all of the teams that won the State Championship. There were some great storylines this season. However, chatter about metro Atlanta football arriving is borderline absurd. The talk should be about how in AAAAA a 0.500 program reached the State championship. I hear people talking about how good AAAAA football is and it is laughable. Northside’s worst playoff performance in two decades came in Class AAAA.
Enjoy girls’ basketball season, as we have for weeks here in Warner Robins.
We will catch up with you guys next season.

Retards at Work: This is yet another pathetic effort for the staff of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to draw readers from metro Atlanta. Look, people just don’t buy the newspaper anymore. Like other papers the AJC is struggling. There is a method to the madness with these metro Atlanta high school football cheerleaders.
Ask these guys to show dangible evidence that any major city has produced fewer state champions over the course of any period (10 years, 25 years, etc) and you will begin to hear crickets chirping. The metro Atlanta high school football crowds talks loud but carries a very, very small stick.

EagleNationRising: Well, let’s see: In AAAAA, there have been only 5 state champions since the class was created — 3 of them, winning 5 of the years, are from metro-Atlanta; the other 2, winning 6 of the years, are not. In AAAA, the last three champs are from metro-Atlanta, and they don’t include Marist, which won in 2003 (runner-up two other times in the past 10 years). Do you count Buford as a metro-Atlanta team (I’d think so) — they have done o.k. in AA, winning 6 of the last 10. Seems like metro Atlanta teams are competitive to me. I don’t know how this compares to other states or cities, but I’d guess pretty well for those states that have real competition across the state. We are blessed in Georgia to have great teams North and South.

Eagle is living in a bubble moron.. Do you not know that Gwinnett County is the BEST football playing county in the USA?? Heck North Gwinnett punked the #13 team in the USA (Crenshaw, from LA) to start the season! Buford has traveled to Ohio for the Kirk Herbstreet Clssic & beat a AAAA Team that was in their state semi’s the year before.. They also traveled to Texas & punked a AAA team in an invitational there.. As for hoops, their gilrs hoops team is 2 time state champs & will win a third this Spring.. Same for Norcross girls & GAC AA boys…
Get out & get into reality.. But we all know you made the moronic statements so you’d be addressed.. You have been dressed DOWN!! Go get some clothes on, it’s cold outside..

I agree with some of the comments that Burke county was ratyed far too high in the final poll.St Pius and Grady were obviously far better teams.Making the semifinals with a couple of 1 point wins over weak opponents shoul not hold mouch weight.I saw them play-maybe they should move some of those”skilled”players to defense. There was no question as to who the top 2 teams in AAA was!

In AAAA, an even more injustice was done to Clarke Central, didn’t they only lose 1 game all year and was always ranked and most of the year at #2, OH, I get it now, the school is not located inside Highway 285 to be considered to be ranked. Just another rural school not getting their dues.

“Another nit picky thing, but I question why Statesboro is #4 instead of #3 or #2 in AAAA. Chattahoochee beat them on a last second, awful looking, lucky to get through the uprights FG to win by 1 point.”
I think you have to look at more than just how the team played its last game. Statesboro played Chattahoochee better than Starr’s Mill, but I don’t think Statesboro played its schedule better than Starr’s Mill did.

Two reasons:
One: Teams play to win championships, but they also play for respect, whether they admit it or not. Fans also want respect for their teams.
Two: It’s fun to argue, and it’s too cold to be outside.

“Monroe Area finished in the final eight, a team that can beat … Cedar Grove(5losses?) … just look at the stats”
These are the stats that I see: CG beat Gainesville 34-25, and Gainesville beat Monroe Area 49-17. Yet you claim that Monroe Area is better than Cedar Grove. Based on what? … Monroe Area had a fantastic season, and its coach could be coach of the year. But it’s hard to say if you’re a Top 10 team when you don’t beat any teams that would even be in the top 20 of that class. MA didn’t even play all the good teams in its region (ie, White County).
‘’Where’s Bremen? C’mon, they at least deserve to be in the freaking top 10!!! Go Big Blue…”
Ahead of who? Bremen is similar to Monroe Area. Good team, but no wins over teams that are even close to the Top 10 in that class.
‘’Burke county plays no one in the regular season but washington county, they had easy bracket got past baldwin and crisp by one point beat cedar grove and got demolished by carrollton, so explain why they deserve to be #5 when there are better teams under them.’’
I assume you believe Grady should be ahead of Burke. … I’d respect flipping those two. There’s as close as you can get. Your opinion is as good as mine on this one. … Grady played PC tight, and Burke was blown out by Carrollton. Burke won by one point vs. Crisp.
On the flipside, Grady lost to Blessed Trinity, an unranked AA team. Burke’s worst loss was to Baldwin, a ranked AAA team. Burke later avenged that loss. To me, losing to Blessed Trinity was at least as damaging for Grady as getting blown out by the state runner-up was to Burke. While I think Grady’s close game vs. PC is significant, Grady still lost.
I don’t think you could go wrong in picking between Grady & Burke. Depends on how you look at it.
“Again, putting ELC above Savannah Christian is only because it is 30 miles south of Atlanta!!”
If that were the case, you’d see a pattern, but I don’t see it. … East Paulding and Dutchtown (metro ATL) made the QF and didn’t finish in the top 8 of AAAA. Brunswick lost in the second round and is ranked #6. … Cedar Grove (metro ATL) made the QF and didn’t finish in the top 8 of AAA. Instead, Baldwin (near Macon) lost in the second round and finished #8, ahead of CG. … Lovett (metro ATL) made the SF and is ranked #8 in Class AA, the lowest of any SF team. … Higher in this post, I argued that Burke County (Augusta area) ought to be ranked ahead of Grady (midtown Atlanta). If there’s ATL bias, why all the contradictions?
“Where is Clarke Central in the 4A rankings? Undefeated during regular season (including shutout of then #6 Flowery Branch), top 3 the entire season and lost one game in the 2nd round (mainly because 3 defensive starters were out). The Gladiators also have D1 prospects Martay Mattox, Alan Posey, and (JR) Quenshaun Watson.’’
I had Clarke and Flowery Branch #11 and #12. I think both might’ve been top 10 teams, but I can’t give teams breaks because of injuries. It’s too subjective to say how a team might’ve done. SWD might’ve beaten Clarke Central last year if Ken Malcome hadn’t gotten hurt.

”Props to AJC and GHSF Daily for your efforts and insight in providing your philosophy toward final rankings. Could you provide something similar for your pre season rankings. ?”
Philosophy for preseason rankings are much different than for post-season rankings. In the preseason, it’s basically an assumption as to how strong the teams will be based on history and returning starters. As the season moves forward, scores and bottom-line performance (who wins, who loses, not what should’ve or could’ve happened) becomes most important. But we still maintain certain assumptions until proven otherwise. Camden County is a case in point.
Until week 12, nothing happened to contradict the assumption that this was still the best team in Class AAAAA, even though Camden hadn’t played a worthy in-state opponent. Then, once Camden loses to Hillgrove, I don’t try to guess whether this was an upset, or whether Camden had an off-night. Bottom line is they lost at the most important time of the year, and they can’t be ranked ahead of Hillgrove.

GHSF, once again Monroe can’t help that the teams in their region were not good, their hands are tied, maybe in 2012, they can play a schedule like they do in 8AAAA, as to where every game counts. Believe me, I have talked to several people and no one understands why the coaches elected to have a ” play-in game ” as the last game on the schedule.

Talk about a pattern: Which playoff game did AJC “not” pick Savannah Christian to lose? Did you not pick against them in all four playoffs? Regarding ELCA’s # 2 ranking. Actually, I think ELCA had the best team in Class A. As my Bro N Law, an old coach, said,” In championship games it all comes down to coaching”. ELCA has a great passing QB and the possibly the best receiver in the state (he’s got a full ride to VA Tech). ELCA threw only 5 times in the Clinch game and completed 1. They beat Wesleyan with a good mix of passing and running, two passing TDs in the first Qtr. Clinch stacked the line and the ELCA coach didn’t call any short passes that would have further opened their great running game. Old Coach was correct. It all comes down to coaching.

You blew it entirely placing Cedar Grove at #8 with FIVE LOSSES and not recognizing an 11-2 Monroe Area team at all. Someone pointed out that Cedar Grove beat Woodward Academy. Sure they did, 36-23, but Monroe Area beat that same Woodward team 50-21, and Woodward did not score against Monroe Area’s starting defense after the first play from scrimmage. Cedar gave Stephenson a close game. Big whoop. Stephenson was one-and-done, AS USUAL. Cedar Grove lost to a 5-6 LaGrange, a 6-4 Stone Mountsin, then to Grady abd Burke County. Monroe Area lost to 11-2 Gainesville and the eventual state champion Sandy Creek

The SEC has won the last four NCAA Football titles and very well may win a 5th if Auburn wins. The 2010 Heisman trophy winner comes from Georgia. Most SEC teams have quite a complement of GA players. Seems to me that there’s nothing wrong with GA football, and that the high school teams here just as likely can play anybody from any state, and when they do, they win far more often than they lose.

Your reason for not ranking Sav Christian # 2 due to losing 1 game to Calvary (other than the State Championship), even though they played a very demanding playoff schedule (and regular season schedule), does not make much sense considering you ranked Colquit #2.
SCS is the only State Championship team that was not ranked # 2. IT is not like they were out classed in the SC game either.
Say what you want, not ranking SCS #2 IS a slight- It may have been a mistake on your part or it may have been intentional- but it is one or the other- using your own criteria makes the point pretty well that SCS should be #2. Are you sure it was just not an oversight?
Every team inte SC game is #2 including a 5 loss team- but a 1 loss team that beat somme of the best programs in teh state in any class, at their home is not- Def a mistake or a slight- hey it is not too late to correct is it?

“It all comes down to coaching”-I’m sure you are one of the best coaches in the state so you have a right to complain about the coaching. On the second series of the game ELCA threw a quick slant to Reeves and the QB barely had time to get it off (of the qb’s 4 throws none were close). ELCA has the best tailback in the state and he had over 200 yds rushing and the offense scored 27 points. They have another great tailback who had over 100 yds rushing. In fact the ELCA offense had almost 400 yds of offense against Clinch so you can’t bring up the offense. The coaches had the right game plan offensively. Grumbling people like you who think they know everything are annoying. State your credentials for criticism please–and don’t bring up your years in little league football. Clinch had the best and fastest football team in the state. To blame ELCA’s loss on coaching is stupid and shows your ignorance.

BcS2010 — I’ll give you credit, you are an SWD homer to the end! Marist, SWD, and Mays were not “all around the same” — Marist beat both and Marist advanced to the second round of the playoffs, barely losing to the eventual state champs, while SWD and Mays lost in the first round. As for next year, looking forward to another battle in 6AAAA; it is amazing that SWD is again your favorite to win the region, after graduating what you said was one of the best QBs in the state, one of the top runners in the state, and some of the best defenders in the state! LOL! Glad Marist will get a home game against SWD next year (as well as vs. Mays and Dunwoody). I would not forget about Dunwoody — came on real strong at the end of the season this year. Tucker is losing a lot of starters on defense, as well as their QB. Mays will start hot and then . . . well, you know! Holla at you next year!
