Cam Newton vs. George Rogers.

Who is the greatest Heisman Trophy winner from the Atlanta area?

Yes, yes, we know, Newton hasn’t won the coveted award yet. But he has this blog’s unanimous vote. Therefore, just for fun, we’ll let the debate begin.

Rogers was an All-State tailback from Duluth High, later playing at South Carolina. He won 1980 award after leading the nation in rushing with 1,781 yards.

Newton is from College Park and played at Westlake High. He signed with Florida out of high school, and may be the greatest first-year transfer in college football history with his eye-popping numbers at Auburn this season.

YOU MAKE THE CALL. Who gets your vote? Duluth’s Rogers or Westlake’s Newton?

Note: Since many of you young bucks have probably never seen a highlight of George Rogers, here’s some YouTube video to evaluate. Don’t forget these were different times in the NCAA, before the high-octane passing offenses were as common as breathing. In other words, these defenses knew Rogers was coming, and still struggled to stop him.

This should not even be up for debate because If the NCAA or SEC had ANY INTEGRITY $Cam would be INELIGIBLE! Therefore if wins the Heisman & Auburn wins the NC it all be a sham that will be vacated in 2 or 3 years.

Cry Cry Cry more UGA fans. In 3 yrs when nothing has happened what will you say? I know….WE HAVENT GONE UNDEFEATED IN OVER 30 YEARS! Its funny that a mediocre school like you is trying to run off a solid coach like Mark Richt. Now let the whining about Nick Fairley tackling too hard and Cam Newton being too good continue…Here is a bottle and a rattle

‘83 SC grad who enjoyed all of George’s games. Let’s not rush to judge one great season for Cam and compare it to a college & pro career for #38. I have tremendous respect for all that he is doing now by help MANY first generation students attend college on scholarship through his foundation.
btw that is Gordon Beckham (the dad) as SC QB (#14) in some of the video near the end.

Cam has far more integrity than George Rogers ever had. Cam should not be judged by his dad’s actions. I had a confrontation with Rogers asking for an autograph that I never forgot. I asked for one for my daughter in an Atlanta hotel lobby and was humilated by him. We were the only two in the lobby. This was 25+ years ago. His true colors were shown to me that day. Cam would never do such a thing.

I saw George Rogers up close and personal while he was a Wildcat. He was a man among boys. I really want to stand by my fellow Duluthian, but I saw Cam Newton play a bunch this fall (my son’s in the AUMB) – he’s, maybe, the greatest one season collegian ever. I have to vote for Cam – sorry Boo!

Bee-Rad: The word around town at the time was Jim Carlen (the Carolina coach at the time) hit his knees with George’s aunt (or grandma – can’t remember), prayed a full blast Baptist special, and promised to get him to Church every Sunday and Wednesday. That clinched the deal. (Vince Dooley’s Catholic – he had no shot.) I understand Cam wasn’t recruited by UGA to play quarterback – something about tight end. Dooohhhh!

Warren giving it to Cam and his flying laptop based on integrity is hillarious. Rogers in a landslide. Class of ‘71, your vote would be for PoPo Rogers

I met George Rogers this year and enjoyed the experience (took a picture with him and the Heisman) but Cam led his team to a championship. Dirtball or not, he has stones and heart. Cam’s only competition from SEC types is Herschel and Tebow

Warren P. Field….I suppose you’ve forgotten what happened with Cam at Florida. When speaking of integrity my guess is he has little. The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. Yes he’s a great college player and so was George. Lets see if he can accomplish as well as George in the pros.

The Heisman Trust Mission Statement: “The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity.”

See the word integrity? It is supposed to mean something. You can look it up if you don’t understand the definition.

Cam Newton should not be seriously considered for the Heisman Trophy due to his lack of integrity. I’m not talking about the “pay for play” issues that surround him and his family, though I’ll be surprised if there’s not more to come on that topic. The legal issues with the laptop, the numerous driving violations and other related charges, and the academic cheating scandal while he was at Florida should be enough to prevent Newton from winning the Heisman trophy.

For that reason, the question of George Rogers vs. Cam Newton is moot. George Rogers is the only possible answer.

Defenses know that as a dual threat Newton is coming one way or the other and they can’t stop him either. Unlike today, Heisman trophies were awarded as much if not more for career acheivement than for what a player did in a particular year. In today’s environment Herschel probably would have gotten the Heisman as opposed to Rogers.

Anybody talking about integrity might as well vacat all the Heisman Trophies if you think what student athletes recieve today is even close to what they recieved in the past!! You are very delayed if you think all this just started with Reggie Bush lol!! Cam for Hesiman!!

Are you kidding me with this comparison-Let’s see this YouTube states Carolina’s 1980 team & Rogers beat University of Pacific and Wichita State, NC State, Wake Forest Duke- REALLY WEAK DEFENSES, the only competition they played was Michigan and UGA, AUBURN…CAM has beaten 7 SEC (5 of them in the Top 15) Arkansas, Alabama, LSU, Miss State, UGA, South Carolina, twice…56-17 in the SEC Championship…

Why don’t you compare Herschel or Bo Jackson? Please get real…

Should not even be a comparison…Silly comparison…

I know its the Metro-Atlanta lovefest which makes this comparison relevant but what ahout the best QB in high school and college from this state, Charlie Ward Jr.

The young man is a class arrests, no traffic tickets no “alledged” impropriety from him or any memeber of his family.

I’m not a big fan of the SEC but the stink on Cam Newton cant be dismissed by Auburn fans and the media now trying to sell this kid to us despite his lack of character.

Charlie Ward was the epitome of what this award stands for and a man that any dad will want his son to emulate. Cam Newton can’t come close to that

Both were wonderful to watch on the field but I don’t think I would want to be around either off the field. I give Cam the edge due to toughness of schedule. Tragically, both will be more remembered for the off field problems than their playing ability. Give me a Charlie Ward any day.
