Did you ever see this coming for mega-prospect Isaiah Crowell?

Your thoughts on No. 1 Carver being upset

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

Once upon a time, Isaiah Crowell — an AJC Super 11 selection who is considered by some to be the nation’s No. 1 college football prospect at tailback — had planned to announce his highly-anticipated college decision after Carver-Columbus won Friday’s state championship at the Georgia Dome.

At the time, some may have interpreted Crowell’s confidence in his team as, well, overconfidence. Don’t count me among them. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with thinking your high school football team will win it all. Actually, there may be something wrong if you don’t think your team will  have a chance at winning  it all.

Most players — whether they say it publicly or keep it to themselves privately — feel that way about their team anyways. Crowell’s comments of confidence are very well known … not for cockiness, as much as reporters constantly  prodding him about when he wished to reveal his college choice — Alabama or Georgia, among others. Everybody wants to know the future college for the “next Marcus Lattimore,” who has proven yet again that one great player can change a program’s fortunes instantly.

Back to Crowell: We know the rest of the story. There won’t be any Friday announcement at the Georgia Dome because No. 1 Carver suffered a stunning 27-14 upset to Calhoun in last weekend’s Class AA semifinals. However, Crowell had already told Scout’s Chad Simmons a few days before last week’s game that he was delaying his decision until signing day.

Isaiah Crowell had an unexpected ending to his senior year (AJC photo)

Isaiah Crowell had an unexpected ending to his senior year (AJC photo)

How did Crowell do in the game? He rushed for 94 yards on 20 carries. Calhoun coach Hal Lamb told the Chattanooga Times: “We did an unbelievable job on him. We kept hitting him and hitting him. That was our goal and he got frustrated. Our kids never quit and I truly believe in our football team. A lot of people didn’t expect us to win tonight. I’m so proud of our football team. We as a football team believed we could win.”

Crowell was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for taunting the Calhoun crowd following a 50-yard TD run that was called back due to a penalty. He was also observed yelling and complaining on the field and on the sideline throughout the game, according to the AJC’s Chip Towers. “Calhoun did a great job on defense and tackled really well Friday night. They didn’t allow any of the explosive runs he is accustomed to,” Carver coach Dell McGee told the AJC on Monday. “Isaiah’s a very competitive person and he wears his emotions on the outside sometimes. He’s got to mature in that regard because it’s definitely going to get tougher on the next level.”

Now it’s YOUR turn: What are your thoughts on Crowell? And what do you think about the Carver loss? I have to admit I never saw that coming. I thought Carver, with its boatload of blue-chip prospects, might be the state’s best overall team (or most talented), regardless of classification.

I just hope his swagger comes with some humility. UGA needs a top tier running back whether its Crowell or another prospect. In reality, only time will tell if he lives up to the hype.

Shocking is one word that comes to mind, but most games come down to two or three plays that just go the winners way. Look at many of the college or pro games last week for prime examples.

Isaiah, we’re still looking forward to seeing you as a DAWG! They don’t call it Tailback U for nothing.

Lattimore is being overrated. He didn’t do it by himself. South Carolina has numerous good players, including Alshon Jeffery and Stephon Gilmore. It also helped Carolina that UGA, Florida and Tennesee were down. Crowell is not going to singlehandedly do anything either. UGA has numerous other issues to address as well, including improving the play on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Crowell is only a nice piece to a big puzzle.

Crowell will be nice to have, lets just hope he can actually produce on the next level. Who would be a nicer compelement; Ealey, King, or Thomas?.

Either way, I’m more interested in seeing if we can sign that JUCO NT John Jenkins.

Alabama is after 3 running backs in the 2011 class Crowell,Dee Hart from Orlando Fl. and
the latest Hill kid from Louisana who was a LSU commit who visited Bama this past week
end. A few hours ago he decommited from his LSU commit and looks like Bama is very
very interested in getting him to play for the crimson tide and reports are that Dee Hart is
a silence commitment to the Alabama coaching staff so where does that leave Crowell only
one thing to be a Georgia Dawg!!! RTR

wish Richt had some of that fire in him ! Richt doesn’t want that kinda player except for the fact that Isiah will save Richt’s job !! Richt has gotta go and Isiah has gotta sign with the Dawgs. For Richt, everything is “in Gawd’s hands” or it’s “Gawd’s will”. He has the same cop out mentality that avoids taking personal responsibility for the disgraceful deterioration of UGa football on and off the field.

everyone is talking about this kid, take a look at the kid from Whitewater High School, Josh Clemons. I’m pretty sure he would serve UGA much better than the kid from Carver Columbus. When teams knew he was gonna get the ball, they still couldn’t stop him. Take a look at the strength of talent Clemons faced, compared to Crowell’s talent.

It’s not unusual to have a high school team that has better than average players playing hard at every position beat one that has 5 or 6 “blue chip” players, but is not as deep across the board. Crowell has to grow up, and he will, he’s been the BIG FISH in the little pond. But, that will change once he gets to college.

I love it…. shows he really cares about winning. With that being said, it needs to be channeled in the right way and he’s not blaming…. he has to ensure he is motivating his teammates and not pointing the finger. Where was the story last year in the dome when Da’rick lost in the championship game after really being held in check by Buford and he would shake anyones hand, or go up and receive the team award? Why all the negativity on one player by the AJC?

There are some people who can turn anything into a reason to bash Coach Richt. Crowell acts out in high school, and Dr. P above turns it into another rant on Richt. I have a question; did the coach sit his player after he taunted the opositions crowd? If the answer is no, then this coach has lost control of his HS team or never had control to begin with.

The best players who are that competitive show emotion like that. It was the first time he was put in that situation all year long. This is the only team he did not run over and it frustrated him. GREAT players do act that way and I am sure the Calhoun player probably taunted him to get him out of his game. I was not at the game, but I heard someone state that the Calhoun was hitting him out of bounds. Regardless, if this is the only issue, I would love him to come to UGA.

Crowell’s on-field display shows an all-too-common immaturity among so-called ’star’ players. What, did he expect Calhoun’s defense to roll over for him because he is Isiah the Great? If he can’t handle being schooled at the high school level, his college career will last until the first time he gets nailed for negative yardage and stats ranting and raving like he did Friday. Grow up, kid. You ain’t the only fish in the pond.

Calhoun coach said that his team did a good job containing Crowell. I didn’t see it that way. He had 95 yards on 20 carries. He had another touchdown of 55 yards called back. A couple of times it was 2nd and 2 and Carver threw the ball incomplete. Then again on 3rd and 2 on the same drive. The whole night he was one step away from breaking another one but did not get the ball in those key situation. I was hoping Carver road that horse a little more.

@ Tone. Unsportsman like conduct can happen at anytime. During live play or as a dead ball foul. Even though the tocuhdwon was called back he can still be penalized for a deadball foul. For example, if he would have gone onto the sideline and punched another player then he could still be ejected. As far as the penalty, IMO he should have not been called for it. I mean, he was just celebrating after an impressive run. To me, it’s a double edged sord because some of the people on the sideline was jawing at him before the game started etc. Sometimes the rules take some of the fun out of the game.

Both backs had big plays called back in the game. Crowell’s blast up the middle, he was gone — nobody around. Holding. Christian’s screen pass, down the sideline outruns the defense, illegal man downfield (pass over line). Game was tight. Buford was wanting a rematch with Carver, Calhoun was wanting one with Buford.

Confidence is a great thing in an athlete player. Arrogance and egotism is not. I am not saying Crowell has either of these qualities since I have never seen him, but that is how it sounds. It appears that he wants to be on center stage for his big announcement and EVERYONE is just clamoring to hear.

In case you have not heard, Rivals has dropped Crowell from 5-star to 4-star.

I didn’t see the game but got to hear the second half. From what I heard, Calhoun seemed to be in control and made crucial stops when needed. My guess is that the Calhoun staff had their players better prepared with fundamentals than Carver did (particularly the line play). Otherwise, how could the size difference be overcome?

Saw the game. Crowell was barely a factor. “Hit out of bounds” – didn’t happen. He got knocked into the kicker-net-device once, but in that instance he was hit so hard in bounds that it knocked him almost into next week. He also failed to make some key yardage at key moments. Got stopped in backfield on 4th and 1 near the Calhoun 40. Big play. Throughout game – He was very frustrated and showed it constantly. Acted like a baby. Carver was outcoached and outplayed in other ways in the game: quarterback consistently missed receivers, team couldn’t get the right number of players on the field on special teams, and they got penalized 15 yards at the opening of the second half because they were LATE GETTING OUT OF THE LOCKER ROOM and onto the field!! Calhoun quarterback (Landon Curtis) was truly great. Several long passes on the money. Two in the corner of the end one for touchdowns. Much better quarterback than Nash was last year. Nash never got the ball to Da’Rick during the Buford game. Watch out for this running back – Dustin Christian. Hard working, Tough competitor. Good cutback runner. Calhoun-Buford game will be a classic matchup of two talented, hardworking and well-coached TEAMS – not just a collection of individuals.

How tall is Crowell? To be really good in the SEC now, a running back needs to be about 6′2″ and fast. Look at Lattimore at USC. Then look at Dyer at AU, Demps and Rainey at FL, Ealey at UGA. All are decent backs and have their moments, but the big back is the one who breaks tackles and keeps the chains moving. Is Crowell any better than Ealey? Just wondering.

At fridaynighter, I agree with the majority of your post. As far as the locker room, I was at the game. I too was wondering what was taking them so long to get out of the locker room. As I was walking back to my car, I noticed that the Carver football team was behind me. Their locker room was across the street from the stadium, in a shed looking building, behind some other buildings. I know this is no excuse because a team should be able to adjust to the environment, however, they had to walk at least 4 football fields length to get back into the stadium. I am not aware if the home team has to walk the same distance or not. Again, not makiong any excuses, just more curious as to if this is a common practice around the state.

To beenwatching Here you go some simple math buford lost by 2 touchdowns to Carver. Calhoun beat Carver by two touchdowns. Thats a 4 touchdown difference. Calhoun wins 28-0 Now cry about that.

LaGrange2008

@gcs. Crowell missed 4 games with a turf toe and knee injury. He still rushed for 1700 yards on the season. As far as him dropping to a 4 star, that really doesn’t matter this late in the year. Perhaps if he had dropped in week 2 then your point may have some merit, other than that it is a moot point. When you think about it, high school football players have to play more games to win a championship than college players. IMO, he is still a 5 star back to me.

Lastly, I saw several of Carver’s games this year. This kid is an awesome running back. I am not going by just what I have heard and have read. Seeing is believing. In the game against GAC, his quarterback threw an interception that should have been a “pick 6,” however, Crowell came out of nowhere and put a lick on the Defensive back that intercepted the ball. This shows me that he is a competitor.

Also, I am suprised that this kid hadn’t gone off earlier than Friday night. In the games that I viewed, there were several instances in which the other teams were taking obvious cheapshots at Crowell. In the Callaway game I saw him go up to the referee in a calm manner and point to his leg (I am assuming on this one but it appeared he was talking to the ref about a couple of cheapshots that were happening after the play was over). Two plays later he was holding his knee in pain.

The bottom line is, at the end of the day he is a human being. Any of us who have ever played a sport or lived life has gotten frustrated about something. No one on this site is perfect, so for some to bash this young man like they have never done anything wrong is shameful, IMO. I know that we are all entitled to our own opinions, however, I refuse to jusdge him negatively based on one night. Especially when other teams have taken cheap shots at him in the past.

@football guy, I agree, that’s why I said that teams must be able to make the adjustment. Remember when?

I watched Emanuel County Institute play in the Class A high school football championship game in the dome a couple of years ago. ECI lost. Its two heralded stars, Waushan Ealey and Dexter Moody, were both UGA commitments–and both of them acted like brats during the game. They would deliberately walk toward an an opposing player after the play was over and try to bump his shoulder, daring the player to not move out of the way. A lot of that kind of stuff, especially in the latter part of the game when it was clear they were going to lose. Their coach should have benched them–but how many coaches have the guts to do that? Not enough. It later came out that Moody had other “behavior issues,” more serious ones, and UGA rescinded its scholarship offer. Ealey has had a few issues at UGA.

Some of these high school stars need some real character maturing–a firm coach, learning to lose, and in a few cases, a good spanking from their mama would help.

Hopefully in Crowell’s case, he’s a quick learner and is open to doing a little growing up.

Lagrange 2008, you might want to get a yard stick out and does some studying. The visitors locker room is no more than 75 yards from the stadium. The Carver coaching staff were out coached big time so quit making silly excuses about lockerroom distances.

C-Town, news flash, I’m not a Calhoun fan and only went to the game to see Crowell play and came away disappointed. I could care less about da’rick rogers or his darn grades or where he went to school or how many times he gets arrested. Hows that?

Lay low -Well for the last 2 days you have been on Lamb & Calhoun Jock. How were you Disappointed? Crowell still had 95 yards with one call back..60 yards…..I mean what did you want?….Who cares what you think…..When Guys like Mark Richt & Nick Saban come stand on the sideline to watch him play doing the year……..he went 90 for Richt & 95 for Saban…So he shows up in big games…..Calhoun did a good job of slowing him down………But he wasn’t stop….Name a better RB that has come from this State in the last 5 years????……..So stop your hate…..

Name a better RB that has come from this State in the last 5 years????…….. Sorry but that has yet to be determined. Too many of these hyped recruits flame out at the next level. He hasn’t proven anything yet. He could turn out to be jasper sanks 2.0 for all we know.

Mark Ingram only had like 800 yards this year& Ingram is a great RB…….my point Jasper had more than him in 1999….so had talent…his problem was of the field…….You are trying to make Crowell a thug because he did a fist -pump in the Inzone, & got a 15 yard flag…..AJ Green did the same thing in 2009 vs LSU…..is AJ a Thug???…..NO…..and the ref who threw that flag was wrong too….Lay Low….when crowell goes off on Bosie St next season as true Fr…….don’t jump on the bandwagon…..its to late…HATER

I saw the game. Crowell is a great running back that faced a great defense. This is the best Calhoun team that coach Lamb has had there. This is the best Defense. Landon Curtis is the best quarterback. He is better then Nash Nance was last year. Dustin Christian is the best running back. He is better at slicing up a defense then Crowell. He has more shifty moves then Crowell. Crowell may be slightly faster. The receivers out jump and manuver the ball away from any corner back. The kicker is the best they ever had. He is even better then Scott Blair was. The defense hits like no other I have ever seen in high school ball. Buford is in for a battle this year.

Crowell reminds me of DaRick Rodgers last year. Last year against Dalton in a 31-28 Calhoun win. DaRick almost cost Calhoun the game with his unsportsman like conduct penalties. Every time he scored he would take off his helment and hold it up to the crowd for a 15 yard penalty. Buford stopped DaRick and won the game. We stopped Crowell and won the game.

How in the world is his behavior a suprise?

You give Lebron, at age 19, millions of dollars and a sense of entitlement and look what that created. A media frenzy everytime he acts like a little kid. He just loves the attention. Maybe if Lebron put as much energy into winning a championship as he does parading himself around the media, he would have a fews rings by now. Jordan won because he was a student of the game and ignored all the media attention. He just played the game.

You only see this kind of behavior in basketball and football. Rarely on the baseball field.

The game has changed folks. 18 yr old kids are being given names like the “chosen one” and a 5 star player etc. All that does is create overconfidence and selfishnish. Most players named the “best” or “number 1 prospect” at his age act accordingly. Sadly enough, this is what the media has done to young athletes and the sports they play. Not every superstar displays this behavior, but the ones with all the accolades and no results almost always show their butts when things don’t go their way. Terrell Owens is a prime example.

No suprise at all. Give someone an inch and they take a mile. How can anyone expect an 18 yr old kid to have a clue of the way he should conduct himself on a state or national level. They think they are on top of the world and it’s because the media feeds them all kinds of fantastical bullsh#@ about how GREAT they are. In their minds they become invincible and will do what they please. Coaches that do not discipline these GREAT players obviously don’t have any other super stars to rely on. I mean what would you to? Sit your best player? No. Don’t even act like you would. Especially in the semi-finals.

A suprise? What a joke! For all the UGA doubters: your not a fan if you jump ship after a couple of rough seasons. Shame on you. Your not welcome here.

At Layinlow, My neighbor’s house is 90 feet behind mine, however, there is a fence in between our yards. If I was to drive to their house, using the street, I drive a about a mile because of the way the road is set up. Now, even though you are way off with your 75 feet measurement, this team still had to walk down to the end zone, then behind the bleachers. After that they had to leave out of the gate then walk across the street and then behind some buildings.

A football field is 100 yards. They had to walk 50 yards just to get to the back of the bleachers. Now, I’m not going to pull out a measuring tape, however, it was way more than 75 yards. Another poster said the locker room is 200 yards away. However, it doesn’t matter how close some is if you have to walk 3 to 4 football field lengths to get there.

It’s the time of year when grown men salivate over the decisions of teenagers, thinking that their program will be brought to the promised land if said teenager graces your university’s football field with his presence. Remember two things: freshmen rarely ever make huge impacts, and then usually only at wr or occasionally rb IF the coach doesn’t redshirt them because they don’t block well (Knowshon), and for every Lattimore or AJ there are dozens of Jasper Sanks’ or TJ Gartrells’. Good kids, highly recruited, didn’t help much, if at all. Besides, if our line blocks next year the way it has the last two years Herschel himself, in his prime, wouldn’t help much.

jim brown, walter payton, emmitt smith, barry sanders and herschal walker didn’t act like the kids do today. they ran over, around and through people, handed the ball to an official and went back to the huddle. when they lost or were not successful, they didn’t throw fits, blame others, hold press conferences, etc.

THE MEDIA IS OUT OF CONTROL. THE EXPOSURE AND PRESSURE ON KIDS AND COACHES IS OUT OF CONTROL. BIZZARO WORLD. WHAT SHOULD BE UP IS DOWN AND WHAT SHOULD BE DOWN IS UP. PRIORITIES, PRIORITIES, PRIORITIES……

@ Coach, IMO, those players could have acted the same way as the players today. The difference is, we now have more media and technology exposure. For example, there were several people around me, including myself, who were updating people all across the state as to what was going on with our different smart phones. Even the AJC has link where we can Twitter about different games. The point I am trying to make is things are reported more in todays day and age. An older gentleman who I worked with made a comment. He stated, “Our generation wants to act like we were perfect when we were kids.” I hear people say time and time, “we didn’t act like that when we were their age.” Bottom line is, we did act those ways. We were sore losers just like many are today. Now as an adult I try to teach younger people to behave appropriately, but I am not going to act like I was a Saint because I know I wasn’t.

UGA needs a bigger more powerful back who can break some tackles. They have plenty of smaller backs. Unless Crowell can run like a big back(i.e Moreno) then they don’t need another small running back. I don’t know, maybe Malcome will be that guy next season. Ealey and King are listed at 210, but they do not run like they are 210 lbs, more like they’re 175 lbs.

We’re talking about a high school boy displaying emotions during the game. He’s not a 32-year-old lawyer in a courtroom, he’s a kid pumped up high on athletic competition. He’ll deveop more self control over time and become a bland drone like the rest of us, I just wish that Georgia Tech was on his list. He’d have a fighting chance to grow up and come out with a usable degree, not get used up by the UGA football machine; an NFL career is promised to noone, and I’d hate to see him return home to work on a loading dock with back troubles, likely no degree, and no great prospects for the future.

He plays in one of Georgia’s weakest classifications and against weak teams he did good, against a above avg team not so good. I am a columbus resident and have been an Isaiah fan since seeing him run against northside warner robins his sophmore year. He is a great running back and likes to compete. He is 18 years old so confidence should be expected. As far as carver goes they to me could compete with any team in the state that runs the ball heavy. For teams that spread it out they will always struggle with.
