Miller Grove knocks off No. 1 team in the USA (Milton High)

Milton High’s hold on the No. 1 ranking in several national high school basketball polls may be short-lived.

Milton dropped a 71-61 decision to Miller Grove on Saturday. It was the first lost of the season for Milton (4-1), which was ranked No. 1 before the start of the season by USA TODAY, among other polls.

“It was great — not only because Milton is No. 1 in the nation, but also because they have tremendous program with an outstanding coach and players,” Miller Grove coach Sharman White said. “It was great for our kids to get that kind of win this early in the season.”

Despite Milton’s national accolades, it would be hard-pressed to call it an upset. Miller Grove, after all, is the two-time defending state champion in Class AAAA and has several elite college basketball prospects.

Miller Grove’s Tony Parker had 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Thomas Marshall finished with 14 points and 6 assists. Miller Grove’s Devon Provost scored 14 points and was in charge of guarding Milton point guard Shannon Scott (signed with Ohio State), who finished with 18 points.

Miller Grove (4-0) led by as many as 24 points in the second half.

“The difference was our defensive intensity,” White said. “We did a great all-around job of making adjustments and taking them what they like to do and out of their comfort zone.”

Now it’s YOUR turn. Was this an upset? Or did the best team win? And we know it’s early, but which high school basketball team do you think is No. 1 overall in Georgia? Milton? Miller Grove? Columbia? GAC? Someone else? Please post below. Note: Video by CourtCred.com

At least now the AJC can realize that there are teams other than Milton that play competitive basketball in Georgia. Further, we can put an end to this talk of ‘mythical’ National Championship talk.

Miller grove played good however Tony Parker is making their team look like a thug team. He is always complaining to the officials as well as mouthing off his opponents. By the way many of those other players he was mouthing off to, play on the same aau team. I wouldn’t be surprised if he lost a lot of respect from other players. I hope scouts see how he acts on the court and relize that he may have skills his behavior will not benefit the team in the future. He reminds me of jelan Kendrick of wheeler last year. He had skills but the Memphis coaches relized his attitude was not worth the distraction.

MILTON FAN….are you serious, you are really getting on this blog and comparing TONY Parker to a thug. What did Tony Parker do to make you feel he is a thug. I know the kid, he is an attribute to his community and his team. Point out one play or act that made you feel he did something during that game that was unsportsman like? Take your loss like a MAN. I think you should be questioning your teams performance not Paker. Tony just spent the summer playing basketball for this country and not one complaint, or concern from any coach or player. You are ridiculus, also your last post, Milton will win the state in a much harder class, I don’t agree but lets assume they do, thats suggest that Milton is a much better team than those they face, and since Miller Grove beat Milton, doesn’t that also suggest Miller Grove would beat those opponents as well. Check the schedule before you POST.

Maybe this sports writers will stop drinking Milton’s kool aid for a few month, but wont considering how much Coach Boyd paid for the team.

K example after Tony made a wide open dunk. Noneone was around him. While passing the Milton bench he does three salutes to the team. I’m not saying miller grove is a bad team I just saying the Tonys actions on the court represent a thug team. The other players on miller grove played great and with respect. Tony needs to learn not to argue with officials and his poor sportsmanship will catch up with him in the future. There is also no way to accurately rate teams in any way unless they play each other multiply times. Some teams play great some games and sometimes they play awful. It’s basketball anyone can or loose any given day. If I’m not mistaken Milton be miller grove last Year with a worst team soo.. That just goes to say some teams have off games

Post back when the results come in for winter park…. Oak hill… Also the teams we play in the city of palms classic…. Don’t even say miller grove has a hard schedule…… And the fan most are student athletes have come out of our feeder program….. Not to mention Milton won the blue ribbon Award… Which is for academic excellence.. That’s a national award… Players come here for education and they don’t go to miller grove due to their lack of intelligence..

@everyone miller grove was ranked #12 in the nation everyone is hyping it up as if they lost to a single A team, If duke lost to kentucky would everyone say they are terrible nope because teams lose games got undefeated is hard. it tough when everyone who plays u has nothing to lose, even though they are the same caliber.

Parker needs to get used to being on the court again and royal needs to go see the wizard of oz and ask for some heart. Scott had too many turnovers and even though everyone has bad shooting days nolte needs to be able to get into the score book. many MG players played with milton plays for multiple years so had nothing to fear. Milton will bounce back and MG will get a shocking loss like this 1 is for Milton just the nature of the game.

Milton fan, stop crying. They lost, but they will bounce back. And to clear up an error you made, Dai-Jon Parker has not been with Boyd his whole high school career. He came from Marietta. I don’t see anything wrong with transferring though. I have no problems with Milton and i’ve met and talked to Coach Boyd and he’s cool with me. I have friends who played for him at Tucker as well. The bickering is stupid and calling Tony Parker a thug is out of line. Both schools currently have top notch programs and will do good this season. A loss like this can be good for Milton.

Milton has a solid team. I have watched them play a lot of games, I have also watched Miller Grove and Miller Grove is better than Milton. Milton has talent but they are overrated. They could have lost several games in the state tourney last year. They won the championship against a Westlake tema without their best player. Everyone has bought into the hype machine that is Coach Boyd and Milton. I don’t even think they win state and they will lost several more games this season. It is amazing how some fan can label a kid a thug based on no conversation with the kid or anyone who knows the kid. We all know what the underlying meaning of those words are

That is the problem with America, everything is about class. These are high school kids who are playing basketball and things like how much it cost to live in Milton compared to Miller Grove get brought up. This is sad that a sport that is suppose to teach these kids a lot of life lesson seem to bring out he worse in adults.

Here’s my take: I was at the game, and in reality it was a solid win on a neutral court. It was not as close as the final score would indicate. MG is a team that is as fast/quick at every position, plust they are much bigger and longer (and deeper) than Milton. They were up by 20 for most of the game. You can say what might happen in future meetings, but that game was not close after the half. Though Milton is a top flight talented team, Miller Grove is the #1 team in GA, and I think if you ask anyone at that gym last night they would agree.

@ Milton Fan how can u say Tony Parker is a thug for complaining to refs and talking smack to opponents?? Coach Boyd complains to refs all the time and I have personally seen him throw clipboards, kick chairs, curse at refs, etc. By your assumption wouldn’t that make him a thug? And shannon scott is always talking smack to opponents as well as many other players on milton and other teams. Its part of the game. And also, the only players to grow up in the milton feeder program on the team are Julian and Evan. Almost everyone else has been recruited in to milton. Hey Milton Fan…..Shannon Scott Lives in Gwinnett County (recruited), Shaquille Johnson, transfer from Salem High in Conyers (recruited), Dai-Jon Parker is from Marietta (recruited), Coach Boyd couldn’t coach the 3rd Grade girls team at the local church, Boyd is the biggest phony there is. By the way, Miller Grove is in the toughest region in Georgia, Tucker, Southwest DeKalb, Marist. Milton is so overrated its not even funny. If Coach Boyd and MIlton are so good why has he won only one State Championship (lucky) in all the years he has been at Milton. If you think Milton was SMART for scheduling Winter Park, who they lost to last year and Oak Hill who is by the way going to destroy them and Rainier Beach out of Washington you are an idiot. Dont forget Miller Grove also plays Columbia, who could probably beat Milton. Dr. Krop out of Miami. And Marshall out of Ohio. Lets see Milton plays Fort Myers there first game of the COP Classic who was 28-5, then they’ll play either Norfolk Christian or Dr. Kropp or Melrose out of Memphis or Whitney Young out of Chicago, they wont win any of those game. ALL I CAN SAY IS MILTON IS OVERRATED!!!!!!!

To be honest, i like that “thug” style that Miller Grove has. Its something that I believe is a necessary part of a highschool team. Not necessarily “thug” but i think that teams in highschool should play with a sort of swagger like that. I dont see that from Milton. I have now watched that team probably 5-6 times since coming to highschool and always expect them to flat out destroy teams. But they dont. EVER. I have never seen Milton play to the caliber that they are supposed to. Yes, we (wheeler) lost to them last year and im not saying that Milton isnt good. Im just saying that if a team has THAT much talent on it, no way they should have barely beaten a rather down wheeler team by 1 point. And i think part of the reason is that the coach holds them back. He plays too conservatively and it showed yesterday when he went up a team that apparently plays so non-conservative that they have been called “thugs.” When i look at Milton i think they look like a college basketball team. which sounds nice. But the highschool game is played much differently and i just think that both Miller Grove and Wheeler both play a much better HIGHSCHOOL game than Milton does.

Ok, i wish we could get through 1 season without people mentioning recruiting. We all know it happens, but its not illegal and it has become just part of the game. You think that other sports dont recruit? its just more noticable in basketball. And its not so much the schools are “cheating.” it all benefits the player too. i think in the post-lebron era young athelets have begun a trend where its important to start branding before college. Everyone wants to know these days who the next “it” is going to be. John Wall was the “it” 2 years ago. Harrison Barnes was the “it” this year. For highschool kids playing in random towns, it is appealing to come to schools in atlanta where they may be recognized by major coaches. Teams like Wheeler, Norcross, Milton, Miller Grove, South Atlanta etc. have created such a buzz that its almost like if you play for any of those schools a coach may look at you just because of the name recogition. Dont blame the school, coaching staff, teams, or the players. Its 1) not illegal, 2) the kid is just doing what is best for him/herself. And, wouldnt we all like to give ourselves a better chance to gain some recognition if we had the option? i know i would. And if a student wanted to transfer to a school because they had better academics, no one would have a problem with that. More likely we’d blame the school for not having good enough standards. Just get over the fact that teams recruit. I think it helps. Highschool basketball has never been great the last few years and until recruiting ruins the play of the game, i say whats the problem?

curious?

no disrespect wheeler fan but it actually is illegal for public schools to recruit. Private schools are allowed to recruit but public schools are not. The fact is that GHSA has no money or resources to investigate the recruiting in public schools so they cant enforce it. However, it is obvious that schools like milton, wheeler, norcross, etc. recruit and i think that if it is illegal it is cheating. The fact is its against the rules. And actually it was rumored that the GHSA is going to investigate miltons athletic program for recruiting in not just basketball, but football as well. I wont believe it tho until it actually happens.

but whats the difference between a recruit and a transfer? sure it may be illegal to actively recruit, but its still happening so obviously they find a way to get around the rule. Because like i said, its not against the law for a normal every day student to switch schools for academic reasons. At wheeler since we have the magnet program it happens all the time. So how can you say that players on the basketball team are any different?

It’s actually pretty simple. Highly ranked team loses to lower classification team, FanMan, regardless of his team loyalty, his race or anything else, says something stupid. @ wheeler fan like I said its hard to enforce and prove but its obvious these kids get recruited at these schools to play bbball. For instance, shannon came from Lovett to play at Milton and Lovett is great academically. And supposively shannon still lives in gwinnett but idk if thats tru. And norcross’s whole team is kids from different areas or even states. I’m pretty sure they’re all not switching for academics lol

OK got to jump in, listen as far as tony parker acting like a thug, well the example you gave doesnt indicate that, infact if you watch basketball you will see that the salute has become a part of basketball culture because the pro’s (lebron) and college kids do it. Also since MILTONFAN brought up the example, you may want to look at the tapes that milton has online, there are several instances of players from Milton Saluting, against some of thier other opponents this year. I will not name the kid, I wouldn’t want anyone to say i am calling him a thug which i am not. But also Like you said tony, brandon, Justin, Henry, all play AAU with the kids from Milton. They are all friends and they all understood exactly what the salute was about, no different that you as a fan jumping up and down after a Milton kid dunks. OK gave Coach Boyd some love, and well you all know me I have stated before that i thought the Miller Grove Coach was an Idiot. Well idiot or not, he had his team prepared for everything Milton had. There was a point in the game where Milton went to a half court press, and they immediately went to some play that appeared to get an easy basket, then milton pressed and they got dunks/layups off of it. As i watched the kids didn’t even look to the sideline like hey what do we do, nor did MG call a timeout to set up a play. Thats great floor leadership by the PG, (Thomas Marshall) and great preperation by the Coaching Staff. Infact Shout out to the entire Coaching Staff at Miller Grove. At one point there was some questionable calls, i noticed they not only kept the head coach focused on the task, they also kept the players focused. While Boyd looked like he was taking a whipping, they couldnt find a way to slow Miller Grove down. MG played the BEST DEFENSE i have seen in High School this year. The bench play was actually great as well. I saw number a reserve come in for MG to gaurd Nolte, and i thought this would allow Notle to get on the scoreboard, but he held his own. So shout out to the entire MG Program, and the MG fans as well. Great win for that program.
