Milton High’s hold on the No. 1 ranking in several national high school basketball polls may be short-lived.
Milton dropped a 71-61 decision to Miller Grove on Saturday. It was the first lost of the season for Milton (4-1), which was ranked No. 1 before the start of the season by USA TODAY, among other polls.
“It was great — not only because Milton is No. 1 in the nation, but also because they have tremendous program with an outstanding coach and players,” Miller Grove coach Sharman White said. “It was great for our kids to get that kind of win this early in the season.”
Despite Milton’s national accolades, it would be hard-pressed to call it an upset. Miller Grove, after all, is the two-time defending state champion in Class AAAA and has several elite college basketball prospects.
Miller Grove’s Tony Parker had 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Thomas Marshall finished with 14 points and 6 assists. Miller Grove’s Devon Provost scored 14 points and was in charge of guarding Milton point guard Shannon Scott (signed with Ohio State), who finished with 18 points.
Miller Grove (4-0) led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
“The difference was our defensive intensity,” White said. “We did a great all-around job of making adjustments and taking them what they like to do and out of their comfort zone.”
