Class AAAAA goes topsy turvy: It’s 2006 all over again

‘’You had a bad day, you’re taking one down.

You sing a sad song just to turn it around.’’

Remember that song? Bad Day? It was No. 1 in 2006. That’s the year Roswell and Peachtree Ridge reached the Class AAAAA final, and nobody won. Georgia’s craziest season ended in a tie.

It’s 2006 all over again.

Had a bad day: Camden County, North Gwinnett, Clarke Central, Charlton County …

Let’s talk about AAAAA first.  This is 2006. There are probably a dozen teams that could’ve won Class AAAAA this season. There’s no great team, but a bunch of good ones.

I witnessed one of these surprising outcomes – Grayson 23, North Gwinnett 19.

Conclusion: Grayson converted some critical third-down passes in the first half and scored 10 points while North Gwinnett proceeded to turn the ball over in those same key spots.

It was 10-0 at halftime, and it was over. Grayson is too well-coached, too good on defense, to let a team off the hook for making those mistakes.

Tangent: That #90 at Grayson is the best sophomore DL I’ve ever seen. Might be the best defensive player I’ve seen in person this year.

Now, is Grayson better than North Gwinnett? Hillgrove better than Camden? Colquitt better than MLK? Valdosta better than McEachern?

It doesn’t matter. They’re all good. The team that plays the best wins.

As we move down in classification, that cliché doesn’t apply so much. Some teams are so good in the lower classifications that they don’t have to play well every round.

Other random thoughts …

Are things setting up for a Lowndes-Valdosta final? Wouldn’t that be something. Valdosta would be home the next two rounds. Lowndes is Lowndes. I suspect something will monkey with this scenario and it won’t happen, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

Re Camden: Somebody asked me if Hillgrove’s victory was the biggest upset in playoff history. Now If you spin the facts – No. 1- ranked team, two-time champion, virtually unknown Cobb County school – then it’s up there. But with Camden, you really don’t know whether this is a good or great team until the playoffs. I suspect Camden was just good this year. Camden gave up 42 points twice this season. Lots of turnover from the 2009 team. I think Northside losing to Whitewater was a bigger upset.

AAAA: Interesting to me that three of the final eight were middling AAAAA teams last season – Kell, Chattahoochee, East Paulding. This class is deeper than it has been with 18 schools dropping down from AAAAA.

AAA: Of the big four, Peach and Sandy Creek continues to look awesome. Carrollton and Cairo, not so much. Give SPX & Eastside credit, but I think it’s now Big Four A: Peach, Sandy Creek. Big Four B: Carrollton, Cairo. Great job Cedar Grove & Monroe Area, but I don’t it’s still a four-team race, with two out front.

AA: Except for the Lovett-Brooks quarter, this class has held no real surprises. Buford-Cook should be a classic this week.

A: The Clinch-ELCA, Wilcox-Wesleyan quarterfinals will be ‘’epic,’’ to borrow my 11-year-old daughter’s favorite word.

NG needs to schedule Camden for an early game next year instead of trying to play out of state foes. Even Grayson and Newnan or maybe Lowndes. The defense returns 8 guys so they should be able to juggle that. GREAT defense GRAYSON, bring home the title we are behind you! GO GWINNETT!

that was definitely a shocker Cedar Grove winning at Gainesville. I saw them play at Grady a few weeks ago. And to be honest, they really didnt show me anything. They are similar to MLK in that they like to spread you out, guess they are exploiting that against less athletic teams.

well last week i predicted NG and Camden to win. boy was i wrong. but hey good game grayson. yall played to your potential and NG played absolutely awful the first half. At this point I have no clue who could win it all. I think the collins hill-Lowndes game could be the best game next week but hey what do i know. man was that a disappointing loss last night though. One good thing i can take away from it is that that Soph. DL for grayson has verbally committed to UGA, or so I hear. anyways I wish every team good luck the rest of the playoffs and for injury free football.

All I can say is WOW!!!!! Some Major upsets occurred last night. I was Hood Winked. :-) I would have never believed that a Hillgrove would be a Camden County Nor did I believe that Grayson would beat a North Gwinette. Who will be the next Class AAAAA State Champions? Can Lowndes do it? Can Valdosta do it? Could Grayson sneak back in and do it? My prediction went haywire…. :-)

Topper your chances would be pretty good, but u would have to set on visitors side,as the entire home side is reserve seats, and one section on the visitors is reserved, That leaves 5 other sections open. Most Atl teams it appears to me do not travel well in numbers, so u should not have any problems although interest may peak and spark more than normal attendance. Tickets go on sale on mon or tue morning

ive read this AJC board for the last several years and have never commented. Ive laughed a lot at all the childish and immature comments directed toward teams with young men that are enjoying competion and just growing up. they arre learning valuable lessons and these idits that vent there stupidity and hate is sickening. Im a HUGE fan of a high school tam in the state that most people hate. I played for one of the best coaches and grew up watchin another, and what is the lesson I learned??? it as that we learn to play fo each other and ourselves and are fans. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with being a supporter and a FANATIC.. but some of thse people that vent on this site are nothin but sore loser. I hope the ones that are posting the “hate” are just kids and not adults. express there youthful fire.(I DOUBT IT). we will see how these playoffs pan out. looks like the OLD SCHOOL teams maybe back in the mix. Its a huge upset! Hillgrove did what everyone said they couldn’t! Once agian Hillgrove dominated, but I think it will take a state Championship for the Grove to get their respect. Hillgrove is a balanced team with great leadership. Mosen (defensive coach) is a relentless beast! Ironside- the name says it all. The Oline is solid- giving up only 3 sacks in the regular season. Most of our back dont get touched until the second level. Wanna talk pressure the D-line is a force. QB’s dont have alot of time in the back field. The linebackers are head hunter (keep your pad level low) The secondary has now turned into Shut down corners and Safteys. Now back to the O- Receivers all I can say is Glue with speed All of them!!!! Gage has the poise of a College Senior QB. Ike gives you hard yards and Kenyan all I can say is OMG- the most punishing, hardest runner I have seen. He also has speed and just a couple of “moves”! Hillgrove is Solid
Thats us in a nutshell!!! (hey look I’m in a nutshell)

THE PACKERS ARE THE TEAM YOU BETTER WATCH OUT FOR BECAUSE THEY’RE PEAKING RIGHT NOW…YOU TALK ABOUT OUR DEFENSE IS SMALL & CANT STOP NOBODY,BUT IN CONTRAST WHO CAN STOP US WITH A PREMIER DEFENSE?WE PICK DEFENSES APART..NEVER FORGET THAT THE PACKERS PUT UP 38 POINTS ON THE #1 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY IN SOUTH PANOLA SOMETHING NO TEAM HAS EVER DONE…SO YALL BETTER START RESPECTING THE PACKERS…THAT GOES 4 YOU TO VALDOSTA & LOWNDES…WE WILL SEE 1 OF YOU AGAIN IF NOT BOTH

“umm…Lowndes is still a premier program in 5A, nobody would be surprised if they win it all. It’s not like 5A is a total shocker.”

I didn’t say it would be a total shocker. But note that Lowndes has lost two games, both to teams that are gone, once to a team that didn’t make the playoffs. Lowndes also has had a cakewalk to the QF. If Lowndes wins, it won’t be your typical Lowndes state champion.

“Colquitt is singing, “We’re still standing.” Playing at home next week, who’da thunk it?”

I like that. Maybe each team needs a theme song.

“can the Trojans of Brooks Co get some love. to go on the road and beat a once defeated team them back on the road the next week and win again when they walked into the playoffs with a 5-5 record now my hat is defiantly off to them. keep winning and proving teams wrong.”

Region 1-AA is 4-0. Didn’t see Brooks moving along this far (although I did expect a win over Vidalia). Good job by Coach Freeman, who has improved that team quite a bit from September.

topper I would say very good at Lowndes for sure. The Atlanta area schools usually leave us a lot of seats unsold. Then add to the fact that Valdosta is playing in town means their fans will be there instead of the ones who don’t travel coming over to Lowndes.

My gut feeling is at either location (since we are playing two Gwinnett schools) the chances are good. Especially at Lowndes where the visitors side is considerably bigger.

@ GLW Cedar Grove wasn’t impressive the night we played Grady, but we’ve been good enough to beat an over rated Gainesville and Cartersville team. I guess since we’ve been absent from the playoffs for the last decade, we’ve been forgotten. Make no mistake, we’re good and getting better. No one respects what we have, but the boys believe… Call us Cinderella. Our record doesn’t really show how good of a team we really are. And guess what, our QB is just a sophomore who’s gonna get better. Saints rolling on toward Burke County next… And the pundits and computers will continue to pick against us… but we know better…

If Valdosta beats Grayson this week, they should have no problem getting to the Dome! Valdosta should have an easier round this week….Grayson fluked a pretty good NG team. That same thing won’t happen to Valdosta (especially IN Valdosta). If Colquitt wins this week then they will have to come to Bazemore-Hyder next week instead of us coming to them. This won’t guarantee Valdosta the win, but it certainly helps. That game will be more about what coach adjusts and prepares their team the best. Go Cats! (and the rest of 1AAAAA)

I saw Valdosta when they played MLK then I saw them yesterday. Man have they gotten even better. The South Georgia teams (Valdosta, Lowndes and Colquitt) can not take the Gwinnett County teams coming down there next Friday lightly because they are good. I live in the McEachern/Hillgrove area and I am pleased how a team (Hillgrove) that just entered Class 5A beat the number 1 team (Camden County). Many teams have played Camden and have been knocked out of the playoffs.

With starting qback hurt and playing a defensive back who hadn’t played qback in 2 years made me a little nervous. Add to that we didn’t have that defensive back in the backfield along with another usual starter (I don’t know why he wasn’t playing) and I was nervous. The other defensive back did end up playing some running back in the second half.

Hmmmm, with all that outstanding reporting you neglected to mention the team that is playing maybe the best football right now in AAAAA. Mill Creek just dismantled a team that played Lowdnes close to start the season that beat MLK the next week. South Gwinnett is a good football team and Mill Creek simply dominated them. And oh yes, that same South Gwinnett team beat Grayson a few weeks ago. As the poster Rufus said above, it would be a huge mistake to overlook Mill Creek right now. If you do, you do so at your own peril.

Game was tied 7-7 about half way through the second quarter but then we pulled off a beautiful 40 yard running play (unlike I had ever seen) and momentum just jumped all over Lowndes from that point on. I have a feeling that play will be run a few more times before the year is out.

Lowndes did start the game with a drive that was stopped on the 1 yard line. So the offense was pretty much in gear all night. Probably the most sound game our offensive line has put up all year. The personnel adjustments seem to be taking hold on the oline.

Score was 38-7 at end of 3rd quarter. Lowndes played second string from that point on.

Newnan was a big and physical looking team. Probably the biggest we have seen this year. I was impressed with Lowndes performance in all areas of the game this past Friday. Hopefully a good sign of things to come.

The good news for Lowndes is that we have seen plenty of Collins Hill type of offenses such as Valdosta, McEachern and Colquit. These 3 are all high powered offenses like Collins Hill so we will not be surprised by any thing they bring. Just have to perform and keep the defensive mental breakdowns to a minimum.

sickandtired the Lowndes and South Gwinnet game wasn’t that close.

Game was about 23-0 Lowndes until Lowndes went into a 6 minute sleep walking episode in the 3rd quarter. The reality is I feel South Gwinnett was about the 5th best team we played this year at best.

I never saw South Gwinnett as all that good of a football team.

I’m going to see if I can talk my sister in Valdosta into going hunting for a Lowndes playoff ticket for me – even if that doesn’t work out, I’m still very encouraged to hear that I can most likely expect to get a visitor’s side seat on game day. I think I’ll plan to head over there on I-10 Friday and make some noise for the mighty Vikings!

Every team left in AAAAA is a monster and I really believe any of them can win the state championship this year. I do think, however, that teams that are steeped in football tradition and that have been there before tend to perform best when it’s all on the line. This is largely because that kind of school attracts top-tier coaches, and a smaller but well-coached school can still beat a team from a larger school – this year’s playoffs are the proof.

A fact that nobody’s brought up in here so far is that the South Georgia teams all have top-flight coaching – Randy MacPherson at Lowndes, Rush Propst at Colquitt, and Valdosta’s first-year coach, Rance Gillespie. These men have all demonstrated that they don’t just know how to administer large football squads and big coaching staffs, and instill or maintain a winning attitude, but they also know how to make the right calls from the sideline.

Great coaching made the difference for Colquitt and Valdosta last week, and might again this coming week. Here’s to Coaches MacPherson, Propst, and Gillespie and the success they have brought to their programs and communities! And hats off, of course, to all the teams that made this season’s playoffs in all classifications.

Until Lowndes forced us out of our comfort zone that game was deadlocked and so even then it was just a snowball effect and our qb lost control. Lowndes deserved to win and they are a great team but Newnan didnt show up the last 26 minutees of the game and thats a shame. With all due respect to the 1-AAAAA teams in the playoffs, several posters have commented on the fact that there are 3 1-5A teams in the playoffs and use that to claim superiority over the Atlanta/Gwinnett teams. Remember that Gwinnett is regions 7 & 8. Gwinnett currently has 4 teams in the quarter finals, 2 from region 7 and 2 from region 8. With the way the brackets are this year, it is mathematically impossible for us to have more than 4 in the quarter finals as 7 and 8 played each other in the second week if they all won week one which they did except for Parkview. That game does not matter in this case because Collins Hill won the second week where they would have been playing Parkview. Had it not been for the way the brackets worked out this year, there very well could have been eight Gwinnett teams playing in the quarter finals and possibly an all Gwinnett championship game.

Again, I know the south GA teams are good but don’t look past the Gwinnett teams. On second thought, forget us and prepare for the Dome game. ;-)

You folks can forget what happened at the first, middle and end of the regular season.
The “who beat whom when” has gone with the wind.
It’s a new deal now and a lot of folks that were green at the first of the year and ripe and hungry now.

We must not forget that the game is played on the field and not in the paper, and the “fat lady” has not sung, yet, by far!!!!!!!!!!.

If we remember that, we might have all three 1-AAAAA’s still on the feet come next Saturday morning.

Colquitt vs Mill Creek…..it’ll be another shoot-out. The question is which defense stops the run. I believe both teams will be able to air-it-out, but the team that gets the most yards on the ground WILL WIN!

Looking forward to a great game!

congrats to cedar grove on the win over gainseville. there record is deceiving to how really good they are. cedar grove had 3 turnovers and still won the game. when they have a perfect game there goin to be unstoppable, this team is one of the bet teams i have seen so far, they have some of the best athletes that havnt been discovered yet, theres not that many teams left in the playoffs that can match there speed or talent, there qb who is just a sophmore has the mechanics most seniors dont have, with the best WR trio in the state,a strong deffense with alot of speed. i can honestly see this team going to the dome and shocking the state of georgia by winning the 3a championship

newnancougar, nice post. game was close until late in 2nd qtr and then lowndes took over and dominated rest of game. your qb lost control bc he was playing against the est defemse he has seen all year. those picks (3) were a result of how good lowndes d was, not him losing control. Teams were not evenly matched. Newnan has a lot of talent yes and some big kids, but to get whupped 38-7 (varsity vs varsity in only 3 qtrs, bc jv played entire 4th) shows that teams were not evenly matched. This is my opinion. Not trtying to be rude but to ay teams were evenly matched just seems like you are trying to make urself feel better

@BKSMITH14. You mentioned something in one of your post about South Cobb beating Hillgrove. One thing you should know about that game is the fact that Hillgrove played that game without their starting QB or running back, both were out due to injuries. Even then they only lost the game by a single point. I’m just saying I wouldn’t under estimate Hillgrove.

Grayson fans … best to get off at I-75 Exit 18, left on St. Augustine (Hwy 133), left on Gornto Rd in front of Valdosta Mall, right on Baytree Rd, go two miles until it runs into Valdosta State University, then right on Oak St (VSU parking lot will be on your right after the turn), then left on Brookwood Dr, go to next traffic light which is Patterson St. Cleveland Field / Bazemore-Hyder Stadium is one more block on Brookwood on the right, and Drexel Park is on the left, north of the stadium. But you will have to park before you get to this point. So if you are there early enough, turn right on Patterson and then the parking lot is on your left in front of the VSU buildings (at SE corner Brookwood & Patterson). Or if you arrive after 7:00 best bet is to just park in the main VSU parking lot which again will be on your right after you turn onto Oak St from Baytree Rd. Then you will walk two blocks down Brookwood Dr, across Patterson St, go one more block, and the stadium is on your right. You’ll see the stadium lights from the VSU parking lot.

Early weather reports say good chance of rain Friday but too early to be sure yet.

Seating capacity for visitors side at Cleveland Field is no more than 4,000. Total capacity about 11,000.

For Collins Hill, Martin Stadium has about 5,000 seats on its visitors side, with about 12,000 total capacity. After you get off I-75 Exit 18, take left on St. Augustine (Hwy. 133) go 7/10 mile, take right on Norman Dr (@ Chick Fil-A), and the Lowndes High school and stadium entrance is just down on your right.

Traffic will be backed up tightly from I-75 Exit 18 down St. Augustine Rd and Norman Dr all the way into the school campus. Suggest you get there early.

In addition to the several hotels at Exit 18, there are also several at Exit 16, and a couple on Norman Dr south of Lowndes next to Wal-Mart.

Remember too that it’s the Friday after Thanksgiving, and although we are not Atlanta with its massive traffic problems, we have thousands of local and regional shoppers who will be in this area not attending the game. It will be a very busy place around Exit 18 and the Mall area this Friday afternoon and night for our area.

For all fans of these two games (Grayson-Valdosta and Lowndes-Collins Hill), believe it or not this is the first time ever that both Lowndes and Valdosta have hosted a quarterfinal playoff game on the same night in our little city (125,000 metro population). I hope somebody with more authority and clout than me is preparing a game plan to accomodate our visitors from Gwinnett County — like our city and county and VSU officials, governments, and law enforcement.

Again, welcome Grayson and Collins Hill to Valdosta-Lowndes County!

hillgrovedad, i dont believe your starting qb and starting running back gave up 20 points in that loss. newna held south cobb to 7. lowndes varsity put up 38 on newnan in 3 qtrs. that doesnt bode to well for hillgrove if they run into lowndes. just my opinion. beating camden was impressive but camden has played absolutely nobody all year except 1 good team. they got spanked. you never know how good they are until the playoffs and it showed . time will tell but i see a vhs and lhs rematch

Fred: There will be no doubt come Friday. These games have everything. It is North vs South..Gwinnett vs Region 1..I mean it couldn’t have been written any better. This is very exciting and scary at the same time. Basically who ever wins these games will have region supremacy. So if you look at it like that the debate will soon be over. The fans will look ahead to the future maybe on both sides but there is little doubt that the coaches and kids are only focused on this week. There are no gimmies in the third round of the playoffs. It is put up or shut up time for Region 1 and Gwinnett. I for one cannot wait to see what will happens.

If Colquitt is not able to stop the big fullback from Mill Creek we are in for a “close one”. They could keep our offense off the field by riding their big horse all night. Our D-line and linebackers are going to have to play the game of their life. Slow down their run and put pressure on the QB, otherwise we’re finished.

BKSMITH14 You shouldn’t compare scores from games to justify your predictions. Match ups are what determine the outcome of games. You have brought up the Hillgrove loss to S Cobb multiple times. That game was 2 months ago. If you know anything about football you know teams should get better as the year goes. Yeah, the injured players didn’t give up 20 points, but the 14 year old freshman QB isn’t your 18 year old senior QB. Lets see Lowndes or Valdosta or any team play with their 14 year old freshman QB and see what the outcome is.

maddball: Region 1-AA has 4 teams still in the title hunt. Cook, Fitzgerald, Thomasville & Brooks County.
The Lowndes-South Gwinnett game was not as close as the final score indicated.
1) South scored on the final play of the game to draw within 34-26.
2) South scored 2 TD’s off of special teams-fake punt for a TD & a blocked punt recovered @ Lowndes 5 yd line.
South’s weakness was & is their defense. Mill Creek’s defense is no great shakes either.

AA Quarters should be loads of fun. Region 1 has bragging rights for now but could conceivably go 0-4 this week… or 4-0. Fitz should give Calhoun fits. Lovett just missed out against T-ville back in August and should be ready for Brooks. T-ville should be the best challenge for Carver since Buford came to town back on Labor Day weekend. And Buford hasn’t lost at home in the last 10 years unless your name has been Charlton County. That said, this looks to be the best Cook County team in recent memory. Wolves have looked strong as of late. Man, this should be loads of fun to watch!

Valdosta Cat ease your mind. I had been saying this all year long. “Valdosta has been underestimated and underrated”. After beating the crap out of MLK, Valdosta was dropped in the ranking. How do you justify that. Besides, they wanted to beat N. Gwinnette to prove to the state that they are back but Grayson spoiled it for them. As far as Grayson, I watched them play N. Hmmm = Black Friday, Raider Friday?
I guess all the CC posters are gone but I don’t think they had a bad night. I think they were out-coached and out-played just a little. As their posters claimed, they were faster than we were and they threw the ball better. We ran better, threw the ball well enough, and in the end our D stepped up and made two big plays, stopping their QB on 4th and a foot in the first half, and taking the ball from him in the 2nd half. Game could have gone either way, but if they were #2, what does that make the Raiders?
So now it’s on to Starr’s Mill and another high flying, undefeated team. I’m not looking ahead by any means. Starr’s Mill looks loaded on both sides of the ball and I’m sure the AJC will pick against us again and the computer will have us as 19 point underdogs this week. But if we persevere, what do we get? Anoher road trip to another high flying undefeated team? I think Tucker is the better team, but I’m pulling for our southern brethren in this one.

GHSFB Daily – I think you are dissing a good Newnan team by saying Lowndes has had a cake walk to the 1/4 finals. And dissing Lowndes too! Newnan beat MLK and lost to Stephenson 17-14 (or something like that). Newnan could have defeated a whole bunch of your favorite Gwinnett County Soccer Mom Silver Spoon football teams. Broaden your horizons. Listen to EagleNationRisings’ advice when he tells you over and over to stop drinking that North Gwinnett koolaid year after year. I have said on these blogs over and over, Gwinnett County in its history has only won 41/2 titles in the state’s largest school classification. In History. Take away one good Parkview class and Gwinnet’s record would be SHAMEFUL.

Rancher – Reference your question about dividing proceerds from teh playoff games. The GHSA gets a per cent off the top. I’m not sure of the amount, but will find out tomorrow if you want me to. Then, the visitors travel expenses are paid, so much per mile. After that, the proceeds are split 50/50, no matter how many tickets the visitors buy. The home team pays for stadium security, clean up after the game in the stadium and parking lot, the lights and phone lines to the press box, and the referees, all out of the home teams share of the proceeds.

Sportsfan31313 – Correcting one of your above posts. Lowndes does NOT play Valdosta this week. If we play them again it can only be for the title in the dome.

To all Collins Hills Fans. Lowndes posters have said for weeks how good we think your team is and especially your QB. We look forward to the challenge. After the game last Friday when we talked to your coach about this coming week and asked how many tickets he wanted us to send, he shocked a lot of us when he said “none” and that he didn’t have time to get involved with ticket sales. That came right after Newnan only requested 500 tickets, and returned over 300 to us on Friday. You can ask McEachern, Camden, and Northside, when Lowndes travels we will take upwards of 5000 fans most of the time. There were barely two adult fans per football player last Friday from Newnan, and certainly not one adult fan for each band member. Heck Groves from Savannah brought less than 20 adult fans the week before.

To all Newnan fans – you team look good and you should be really good next year. Your fans that came were quite noisy and loud. We loved some of their cheers! Good luck next year.

How many remember I said Valdosta would beat McEachern, Ware would beat White Water, and was about the only poster on these blogs who said Grayson would beat North Gwinnett. I did miss the Hillgrove defeat of Camden, and I apologize to a good Hillgrove team! To Camden, come over to Lowndes and jump aboard our bandwagon ther rest of the year. We need all the help we can get.

@ bigdog58…

I soooooo want to comment about your post about TUCKER being the BEST AAAA team but I will “HOLD MY THOUGHTS” and comments until AFTER friday night! Then we can AND WILL talk about Adams stadium, your metal detectors at the gate and several other things!!! I grew up over there and we played at the old Panthersville Stadium so I do know about the municipal stadium setup DeKalb has.

Of COURSE all the RAIDER faithful are pulling for a WARE CTY upset so we can HOST another playoff game!!!

BUT not to get ahead of myself…AGAIN…The RAIDER NATION is heading south to STARR’S MILL this friday and on paper STARR’S MILL seems LOADED…they scored 338 points during the regular season for an average of 33.8 points per game while giving up a VERY stingy 79 points only 7.9 pts per game…this seems impressive, then again, Hmmmmm!:

They are another undefeated team at 12 / 0…BUT they play in Region 3 AAAA a VERY weak region and of their 10 regular season wins 1 came against a 5/5 AA team, another 7 of the wins came against AAAA teams…one that went 1/9, two that went 2/8, three that went 3/7 and one that went 5/5 on the year! Of the 10 regular season wins STARR’S MILL only played 2 teams with winning records ALL YEAR…WHITEWATER who finished 9/3 (they BARELY beat 21/14) and GRIFFIN who finished 10/2!

Even in the playoff rounds they got HARDAWAY a 5/5 team in the 1st round and BRUNSWICK at 8/3 in the 2nd round…So a BIG question is HAVE THEY BEEN TESTED YET?????

EAST PAULDING PLAYS in REGION 5 AAAA arguably the toughest region in AAAA…with KELL, EAST, HIRAM & POPE stacked in 5N (we have to play the split region) and SOUTH PAULDING, VILLA RICA & DOUGLAS COUNTY at the top of the SOUTH side!

EAST PAULDING also scored an impressive 332 points during the regular season to average 33.2 points per game while only allowing 117 points or 11.7 per game! The difference is the teams they did this against!

Finally while STARR’S MILL played a 5/5 HARDAWAY & a 8/3 BRUNSWICK to advance to the 3rd round friday night…EAST PAULDING’S RAIDERS just beat the #2 TEAM in the STATE…CLARKE CENTRAL in ATHENS on the road!

Just a few FACTS for thought and discussion the rest of the week…

TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!

GO RAIDERS!!!!!…ON TO THE DOME!!!!!

@AVikingFan – I know you might not believe this, but we Atlantan’s/metro Atlantan’s don’t live in a fairly rural area like south GA. There are a million things going on in this area that occupy the time of many people besides high school football. Just because everyone associated with a metro school doesn’t travel to distant locations for HS games, doesn’t mean that they are any less supportive of their team. They may just happen to have other things going on their lives. But we know ya’ll get excited about going to the big city. I have family that live all over different sections of south GA as well as north GA, there’s no comparison, when given the chance on a long weekend I’ll go north everytime.

@eagle homer lowndes is a run team. wing t at its finest when firing on all cylinders. we have 27 seniors on 99 man roster. lowndes will reload next year, as we have an excellent junior class that will be seniors. we avg 30 points a game. best passing team we faced all year was colquitt and we were ahead in that game i believe 20-0 or 23-0 at one point but they got it goin on offense and got back in it. we were ahead 37-20 with 30 sec to go and jv defense was in and they scored a final td on a long pass i believe. we won 37-27. That colquitt team put up 35 on south panola,. one of the highest ranked teams in the nation and the #1 team in state of ms. lowndes defense is for real. if any weakness it wd be against the pass bc no one has run on us. we picked newnan 3 times last week quickly. we have gootten a lot better against pass as year has gone on. valdosta and their d-1 recruits mitchell(tennessee) and rome( ga, clemson, several others) were held in check all night against us. they only scored 17. we know yall have a good team. no doubt. we respect collins hill, if we play well i just feel it will be to much for anyone right now. it all depends on if we can control the time of possession

grayram- Does Grayson’s QB spend all of his spare time reading the rule book? Yes, there is a rule against the band playing when the opposing offense is at the line of scrimmage, but the only reason a ref will go talk to the band is if the QB complains that he can’t hear when this occurs. Their QB did that when Kell played Grayson at the Corky Kell Kickoff.

Not that there is any problem with it (it is in the rules). I have never seen another QB say a thing, and I’m pretty sure he is just using that rule knowing there is the potential a ref will penalize the team rather than just give the band a warning. Knowledge is a great thing for a QB.

grayram

November 22nd, 2010
8:54 pm

goldenglove002: Grayson’s QB had a broken hand when the Rams played Kell in the dome. He only played a couple of snaps. Against North he was under center calling signals and the ref was well behind him when the ref blew the whistle and turned around to talk to the band. I guess its possible he said something to the ref before they huddled but if so hes was probably instructed to do it by a coach.

BKSMITH14 – It’s true Hillgrove gave up 20 points in there loss, however I can assure you there D is playing much better. The past few weeks, there D has played better than I’ve seen them play all year. And one thing about scores, you can’t always rely on scores to accurately show the pace of a game. Some teams like to run up points while other, and Coach Ironside falls into this category, prefer to put there 2nd and 3rd strings in once they have a decent lead to give them playing time. There were many games this year where Hillgroves second string was in by the 3rd quarter. I’m just saying scores can be misleading. I’m sure Brookwood is a quality team, they wouldn’t be in the place they are now if they weren’t, and I look forward to the game. It should be a great game, no matter who wins. For a first year 5a team and 5 year old school, anyone would have to admit what our kids have accomplished so far this year is impressive. Polls are for losers and there is no such thing as “an upset” in the state playoffs. Teams tend to get ranked based on past history and not necessarily on strengths and weaknesses of the other teams in their class. If you want to use a poll position to determine whether one team is supposedly better than another, then why even play the games. Lets just anoint the next State Champion as the one that just happens to be the chosen team to sit at the top.

GOOD POST!! At this point we have eliminated the “PRETENDERS” and really have no one left but the “CONTENDERS” who on any given night can probably beat each other.

BUT there have been a number of teams eliminated that I think many would have “bet the farm” were going to still be here. Polls and rankings can be VERY deceiving because like you said many times they rely on PAST history and do not really focus on the CURRENT team.

What we are seeing this year is the “growing up” and “Maturing” of several of the newer schools. They are proving they can and will contend year after year. Whatever happens the rest of these playoffs, one thing is for sure…IT WILL NOT BE BORING!!!

If hot air on this blog would win a championship, due to the efforts of a few folks here, Lowndes would win 1000 to minus 100, and that would be just after the first quarter.

I consider Hillgrove to be a favorite Friday, simply because I would have given Brookwood NO chance of beating Camden at Camden. Playing Camden at Camden was one heck of an accomplishment for Hillgrove, or for any other football program anywhere in any State. They have to be the real deal. A good team will be able to run on Brookwood, and pass defense has been questionable, at best, at times.

I live in Gwinnett and until little while ago, I couldn’t have named Mill Creek. I think I called it Millwood or something not all that long ago on this blog. Never been to the high school, and sitting here, I’m not sure where it is. However, they’ve put themselves on the map already, and it’s high time I find out where the school is located. Life can be so different here in Gwinnett, because regardless of football, hundreds of thousands of new people have moved here. Good luck to Mill Creek.

Grayson is well coached and can win anywhere against anybody. They beat Lowndes up here last year. But of course, that was last year, against another team. How anybody is supposed to “own” another team that doesn’t play more often than once in every 5 years, maybe? But, of course, there’s a big mouth here that claims that too.

Finally, there’s Collins Hill at Lowndes. Lowndes, of course, is the favorite, and stages as impressive of an opening as I’ve seen in high school football. Lowndes does have a great band. But the game is played on the field, and has nothing to do with the ego of silly bloggers that apparently need to act out here to prove they have a life. Good luck to Collins Hill. I wish them the best.

BKSMITH-Thanks for the stat report last night. I remember a huge upset of Lowndes at Grayson a couple years ago. It seems like it was followed by a bit of a brawl afterwards. Friday night after the game was in hand for CH as the QB was running out the final 90 seconds one of the big Roswell linemen did something to the CH QB in the pile that had him jumping up screaming and pointing and nearly led to a scrum.

I hope that the game can be played with maturity and the kids can show some self control and dignity-especially whoever loses on Friday.

BKSMITH14 from another Lowndes fan……Ho Hum! It doesn’t matter if the refs were paid off (they weren’t) or if we had injured players (we did and probably so did Camden) or if we fumbled a punt (we did) or what ever other excuses or alibis you can come up with it will not change the facts. We should have won that game and we did not. So we lost. Period! That makes us the LOSERS and Camden the Winners! That makes us less than State Champs and Camden 2009 State Champs.

You could stand to learn a lot about life from yourself. Get over yourself and quit making excuses every time you come up short in something. Losers blame other people for their short comings and don’t accept responsibility for their own actions. Quit being a loser.
I know you say “I call it like I see it”. Well let me say you are coming across as seeing it through the eyes of a loser. May be time to look at “it” through the eyes of a winner for a change.

Points taken, ThatGuy, but still, there are some good things about polls. I don’t have time to get thoroughly acquainted with several hundred high school programs, so the polls give me a quick way of evaluating or comparing them (like “Cliff Notes” or a “cheat sheet”.) They are one piece of data to help me size up the landscape, along with many others such as record, opponents, players (if I know such things), or opinions of others in a forum like this one.

Polls also reflect the degree of respect the program has earned, probably over a period of years, and that general level of respect is in some ways a more accurate measure of, if you will, the “current market value of the brand” than what the score of their last game was.

Plus polls engage people in discussion, like we all do in here every week, and that’s entertaining and healthy! Hang a dartboard on the wall, and guess what? A game of darts breaks out! That’s all a poll really is – a kind of dartboard.

Last thought – when you said “Polls are for losers,” I think you meant “Polls are misleading,” right? I know you didn’t mean to start a sports bar brawl by calling the rest of us “losers” (ha), just pointing out that we all have to work at following the guidelines to address our remarks to opinions, which are fair game, and not to the people who hold those opinions.
Speaking of opinions – Go Vikings! Go Wildcats! Go Packers! (or is that…. GEAUX Vikings?? Since when did sports get so French?)

@AVikingFan, you got me chuckling with the “silver spoon” comment! I thought maybe you were channeling ENR. :) I know a lot of people think Gwinnett is all about high end gated subdivisions but it is not. While there are pockets that fit the description and image of the soccer mom in her van/SUV, there are plenty of areas that wouldn’t know what that was about if it bit them. I see a lot of outstanding players coming from areas of much less affluence (!) that play side by side with the “rich” kids. One thing about Gwinnett I’m proud of is how on the field, none of that matters. IT is all about the football not who has what.

Talking about the life style differences, while I am a native Atlantan, I must admit to envying many of the things about south Georgia. I make the choice to stay here for a lot of reasons but recognize that the Big A doesn’t have everything. I think the southern emphasis on football and other kids/family activities is a good thing.

See y’all Friday!

@YO, listen man. i know lowndes lost the game. i am just stating that earlier this year i was hearing from fans that there was a ref in that camden game that got it trouble. People said there was a writeup about it and that camden fans admitted it and that the reason it got leaked out is bc someone from camden let it leak out,. I have heard this on and off all year. Its even on youtube. I myself did not say that i know for a fact that it happened. SO YO you need to put your mind in gear before you put your mouth in action. Lowndes lost 10-7. The refs in that game at times were horrible were horrible and did seem to make life difficult for lowndes. Was one paid ? I dont know but for there to be so much talk that keeps going on and about it , it just makes you wander. Thats all i am saying. I feel wea should have won game and we had better team and all but we didnt. Coach herrron made some gutsy calls in that game for camden. I will say that

@goldenglove002, the issue with the North Gwinnett band was magnified by the stadium layout. The NG band sits/stands/plays from the end zone stands. These stands look to be about 20-30 feet max from the end of the end zone but I did not measure. At the time, Grayson was on about the 15-20 yard line on that end of the stadium. If you haven’t seen them, the NG band is very large and in fact it takes the entire end zone stand to hold them. They are big and they are loud! So basically you had a very large band about 30 yards away going for all they were worth on a high volume song as Grayson was attempting to run plays. It did not happen just once but kept happening all night. I know those of us in the stands had no clue what was going on until the ref went over to the band director. Youthful exuberance I’m sure but it was a little much.

Lowndes at home is very strong. I think Harrison snuck up on them in a season opener a few years ago but other than that their losses are mostly on the road. Collins Hill will go down by at least 2
TD’s, maybe 3 or 4!!!
Grayson, after a few early season bumps, seems to be peaking at the right time (just like some 5AAAA team I’m very fond of) so Valdasta – Grayson looks to be a much better/closer game.
Where is this computer that now has East favored on the road against undefeated Starr’s Mill?

My team is always better than your team. The North football is as good as the south, stat 166 college football players now in college from Gwinnett only. That is the largest group period. Yes Gwinnett is bigger but the youth program is number one in America says SI.Valdosta is the known football city of Georgia but the tide is changing. Overrated team & players, overrated coach… You guys have it all. As for Grayson, they will continue their streak of upsets and dismantle the most overrated Georgia football team that ever was. The computer predictions are meaningless. I think they were wrong in every game last week. So you better hope they picked against your team.

I have been to many games all over the state and will have to say the Concrete Palace is incredible. I don’t see how 17 or 18 year old kids make the long 4 hour plus ride from Atlanta, walk into that stadium where there is 12,000 strong, see all the state title banners, Titletown sign, and hear the crowd and not be intimidated. I was when I went and I am a grown man and wasn’t playing. Collins Hill can throw the ball and seem to be good but winning there will be tough. Lowndes has athletes, they always do, it will be a matter if they can handle the atmosphere. I saw a VERY good and national top ranked Peachtree Ridge team get completely demolished there year before last. That game was over before they could blink. Good luck to them. Valdosta can be the same way.

After HSFB wrote that our team just learned how to play with the big boys i looked back at my last four years supporting the Rams. It has been a pretty good ride.
Grayson has gone 44-8 and outscored their opponents 1427-504

Playoff losses to Camden by 15, Peachtree Ridge by 3 in double ot, Newnan by 2 on a blocked field goal on the last play of the game by Ogletree.
Some wins during that time have been over highly rated teams such as Norcross, Camden, Brookwood, Lowndes, PRidge, Warner Robins.

So know matter what happens in Lowndes county Friday night i think the Rams have done a great job of playing with the big boys.

AFan — Just a few short stats to argue with your assessment that Lowndes can not defend against the pass. We defeated S. Gwinnett, who tossed it around pretty good. We lost to Mceachern by 1 point, and they threw it pretty good. We defeated Valdosta AT Valdosta, and they throw it quite well. We defeated Colquitt and they throw it lights out. We defeated Tallahassee Leon, Coffee, and Ware and all threw it pretty good. Last week we defeated a strong Newnan team 38-14. You and others said last week we would never beat Newnan.

But let’s look at facts. Facts speak for themselves. Opponents have passed it against lowndes 300 times in 12 games. They completed 147, for a 48 per cent completion percentage. NOT GOOD! Opponents scored 8 TD passes on Lowndes, but Lowndes has intercepted 19 passes. NOT a GOOD RATIO for any passer! Opponents have made 1781 yards passing the ball against Lowndes in 12 games. DO the Math. 148 per game. NOT GOOD.

But let’s also look at Lowndes. For a team known as a running team, we have completed 70 passes out of 117 for 1227 yards and 17 Touchdowns. We have had 4 intercepted. REAL GOOD.

We have made almost 3000 yards rushing the ball this year. Our opponents have been limited to 922 on the ground. We have scored 376 points and our opponents have scored 159, 13.25 PER GAME. D**N GOOD!

Last time I checked our region still has 3 teams in the playoffs and we won 1st place (in region 1-AAAAA). REALLY D**N DOOD!

AFan, go back to the top of my post and read it again. Still think we can’t defend against a pass?

MOVING ON — Burgerkingsmith14 Listen to YO. He has good common sense. I guess you are only 14 years old, hence the number 14 in your blog handle. (Yeah, yeah, you played BASEBALL. I remember!) This is the best free entertainment around.

My, my … amazing how we all get so ballsy when we get to hide behind that wonderful cloak of anonymity, and we don’t to account for ourselves.

Isn’t it kinda like the old theory that when you drink too much, your real personality comes out?

Would y’all act like this in church (for those of you who go)?

Have you ever kareoke-ed, and then watch yourself to see how bad you sound

And this North-South thing is intriguing. I suppose no matter the distance, claims of geographic and cultural and intellectual superiority will always be made — from across the tracks to across town to across the state to across the nation (Civil War of course). If there was a North Earth and a South Earth, those Earthlings would be feuding too.

Oh yeah: To make this post be relevant to football … Good luck to all teams and fans! Now, let the blitzkrieg begin against me!

Stay with them the whole way even when you think they have finished.
Surprise at the end. Hope your internet stream is better than mine was.

One word of warning to your coach and your qback. If you don’t want to hear 7-8,000 fans or more fans start screaming and stomping and doing there absolute best to make sure your team can’t hear the signals, then don’t ask the ref to quiet the band. 450 strong band is quite loud but nothing compared to our fan faithful when you get them stirred up.
Inevitably it happens 3 or 4 times a year and I feel so sorry for the qback when he turns to the ref and the ref walks over and asks the band to stop. He doesn’t realize what he just started. The fans can make the noise of the band times 5.

I don’t think those teams are playing… Individual schools will meet on Friday night and they happen to be from different parts of the state. BLEEDRED and OTHERS – Do not fear the story about a ghost a Cleveland Field. Lowndes has defeated Valdosta the last four times they played there. And Colquitt has played quite well there also. Even Little old AA madison Florida once beat them there. No argument, there once was a ghost, some say it was old Bobby Hooks himself, the predecessor to Write Bazemore. The ghost came up many, many times and caused a visiting team to fumble late in a game, a kicker to miss an easy kick, and a punt receiver to drop a punt. Or so it has been said. But something happened to Cleveland Field a few years ago. The smart folks in charge put a plastic rug on Cleveland Field and called it artificial grass. Funny looking green stuff. But wham bam, it covered up the ghost, and he can’t get out. He has not been a factor since the turf was installed. It’s now safe to say the ghost is history.

So now you know the rest of the story.

Hey Lowndes fans. Think about this. I know most of ya’ll are also pulling for Valdosta (I can’t figure out why, they have never pulled for ya’ll.) But perhaps you should be pulling for Grayson. Seriously. You beat Valdosta and pretty much shut down their all world receiver (#26) and tight end (#11) but do you really want to play them again? Yeah I know you would probably still beat them again. But think about it. Who do you really want to beat? More than anybody??! Who would the Vikings get “up” more for than any other team in the state? GRAYSON!! Think about it. A rematch with Grayson in the dome! Finally get them on artifical turf, in front of the GHSA and the whole state. The referees would be the state’s best, so that wouldn’t be a factor, whether or not it was in 2008. Lowndes and Grayson. Now I think that’s a game I would like to see.

For that to happen Grayson would have to win this Friday, and Lowndes would have to beat Collins Hill, which I think they will by something like 28 to 14, maybe 35 to 14. You should also pull for Hillgrove to beat Brookwood, so you would get them in your concrete palace next week also. Grayson would shut down Colquitt’s high flying passing game in their friendly confines in Gwinnett County next week, setting up your long dreamed for showdown with Grayson. Heck Lil ole Double A Cook beat Colquitt!

Course none of us will be playing in any of these games, and I’m fairly certain none of us can even influence the outcome of a single play, let alone a game. But it’s fun to talk about it. Lowndes vs Grayson, now that has a ring to it!

(My Cook boys might just whittle Big Bad Buford down to size, and send them straight to basketball or you know where. Then we can say “Bring on Carver Columbus!”

AVikingFan

Sometime rain helps the passing game more than the run. I’ve heard good coaches say a receiver knows where he’s going. He can plant his foot, fake one way and go the other way while the DB slips down. We beat a good Tifton team one year up in Tifton in a monsoon by passing it. We were backed up to our 10 yard line, trading short punts all night with a wet ball with Tifton and trying unsuccessfully to run the ball. Our QB faked a handoff to the fullback and raised up and hit CJ Lofton over the middle for a 90 yard catch and run, giving us the game. OMG that was pretty.

Passing in the rain requires good blocking though, and linemen can also slip down trying to block fast Defensive Lineman like we have. Like YO said, it might be hard for the Ketchup Man to throw a pass laying on his Heine (kee). I tend to agree with BKSmith14. Lowndes wins and lives to see another week.

The weather should be warm, even if it rains. And Martin Stadium drains rather well. It will be a good game either way. Rain or shine. I plan on setting up my tailgate tent Thursday afternoon. See ya’ll there Friday!

Robert – There are no plans at this time to build a “new” high school in Lowndes County. PackerAlumni66 – You’re just saying that because the Packers beat Valdosta 9 out of 10 years when Hyder was their coach. Yeah he was a good coach. But he was also a hypocrit. He once called time out with the Cat’s on the Viking 10 yard line, up 35 to 7, with less than a minute to play, to set up another score. His first string offense was of course still in the game. His team did score again. It happened on the west end of Cleveland Field. I was there.

Sure, Lowndes would like to have a rematch against Grayson but that’s small potatoes to folks in Val compared to a state championship between the Cats & Vikings. That’s a game people in Lowndes County have been waiting to see happen for 40 years. I think half the population of the county would be in the Dome just to be able to say they were there. But….. both teams still have some pretty stiff competition to get through to see that. I don’t even want to risk jinksing it by talking about it anymore. Wing _T_Fan When Lowndes builds a second high school 7 or 8 years from now it will be a separate high school from Lowndes High, and students would not cross over to Lowndes to participate in Sports.

Some people are also kinda waiting the see whether or not the Lady Editor of the Valdosta Daily Times who is hell bent on consolidation gets her way. Valdosta, which was granted the right to operate public schools in the early 1900’s, would have to give up that right (charter) in order for the two systems to consolidate. Lowndes County Schools would then take over the Valdosta City Schools, and re-district. It would perhaps be a good time to consider a third high school, drawing from both of the current ones. It is very prudent for us to sit back and wait a few years to see if that will happen. We certainly don’t need 4 high schools. Five counting Valwood, which to you folks around the state, is a local private school.

They should only have one loss this year (to McEachern) but lost to S-Cobb when three offensive starters didn’t play due to injury…Including QB Gage Henry (broken bones in face from PE class).

Hillgroves road to the Dome is the toughest of all the 5A teams…and…They are taking each game at a time, not like some of the “power house” teams that overlook Hillgrove and start making plans for their next opponent. Heck, Stephenson fans had made hotel reservations in Kingsland the week before playing us.

Thanks JIMB…I’ve heard exactly that! Their defense is one of the top in the state. One key to Hillgroves offense is the balanced attack. 2531 rushing and 2124 passing. When we’ve faced a team that can stop the run…We’ve thrown that game for huge yardage. When a team can stop the pass, we’ve had huge rushing stats that game. Should be fun!

JIMB Cook did beat Colquit. Colquit dominated the offensive yardage 2-1 but a lot of turnovers and Cooks determination pulled Cook through in a squeaker. Colquit lost their first 3 games this season. Cook, S. Panola, and Thomasville Central. They should have won 2 of those 3 games. Cook is a very dangerous team though. #1 seed from 1AA says enough.

Valdosta Ga:
This South Georgia town that only a few days ago was populated by over 200,000 citizens is now a ghost town. A mass exodus took place on Saturday as over half the citizens packed up and left following Friday nights losses by Valdosta and Lowndes to teams from Gwinnett county.

How can you have another high school in the same county but play sports at only one? What does GHSA say about that set up. Seems against the rules of the High School Association.

Duluth as a Math & Science HS on its campus but its students are not allowed to play on the Duluth teams. Not sure if it is a commitment to academics by the school or a GHSA rule.

JIMB When a team schedules an out of region game, they are looking to tune up for the season or find out something about their team. If a aaaaa school scheduled Buford, because they thought it would help them later on in the season I guarantee they wouldnt be worried about what happened in the game as far as win loss goes. I really dont see why a aaaaa school would shy away from Buford. The fact is what happens in a non region game doesnt matter in the playoffs, what matters is how good a team is playing in the playoffs. The opposing coach isnt going to care who they lost to the first or second game in the season , just how theyre playing now. Being undefeated isnt everything and it is not required to win a state championship.

Everyone knows the right bracket belongs to Buford. Cook will give them a game, but in the end Buford will be playing for #4. The left bracket, on the other hand, is up in the air. Thomasville will give Carver all they want and Calhoun and Fitz is a flip of a coin. I belive whoever wins the left side bracket will win state. Buford has lost early in the years past and peaked in November/ December. Carver beats Buford but struggles against R6 #3 GAC 21-7 with only two offensive td’s. I belive any other play off team plays GAC and they win by 3 or 4 scores. Carver better tighten up this week or they be buying a ticket to the dome. Fitzgerald/ Calhoun game will be a barn burner. Wing T- of Fitz will only work if they can throw the ball sucessfully, Calhouns D will stop any run. The biggest question is; Can Calhoun score on Fitz… Can’t wait until Friday.

“I didn’t say it would be a total shocker. But note that Lowndes has lost two games, both to teams that are gone, once to a team that didn’t make the playoffs. Lowndes also has had a cakewalk to the QF. If Lowndes wins, it won’t be your typical Lowndes state champion”

TODD perhaps you are underestimating Region 1-AAAAA. Sure, as you pointed out, we lost to Tifton. Stephenson, whom you held in high esteem all year long and who won their region, only beat Tifton 14 to 7. So losing to them, especially after their freshman QB had nine games under his belt, was not something to commit suicide over. I bet Tift County could have beat a lot of region 7 and region 8 teams that you are so high on. Wish you’d take some of EagleNationRising’s advice about Gwinnett County. Yeah Yeah! Also Lowdnes and Valdosta have quite a few wins and State Rings and trophies that say that they are good, cut 1-AAAAA some slack, underestimated and misunderstood, Its funny how people get on here and brag that their team is the best. JIMB said, “Hillgrove Mike, Brookwood isn”t a fun place to play. They aren’t nice and the staduim is old, concrete is cold. Offense is weak, defense is great.”

@JIMB, well, we hope to win, thus, it really isn’t intended to be a fun place to play. I don’t know when you’ve been to Dave Hunter Stadium, but the stadium is “old concrete?” Beg your pardon? The lower half of the home stands are, but that’s all the concrete. The stadium was constructed roughly 25 years ago, so it really isn’t that old.

Brookwood has been a run oriented team forever. When the Broncos passed, one really only had to cover one receiver. There was no short passing game. Not any more! McLane can pass, and has had time to do it, and use the pass to control the ball. The pass then opens up the run. This is NOT the same run oriented team that it was. When you have a QB in his 3rd year as a starter, capabilities change. And while we have good defenders, this is not as dominant a defense as it past years either.

So, JIMB, update your playbook. Brookwood has. Still, however, Hillgrove is going to be everything Brookwood can handle. Should be a good game.

To all of Hillgrove Fans, Coaches and especially Players, Band nad Cheerleaders,
The game Friday was spectacular, your offense is top notch, they train and practice very well in Cobb Co. It was disappointing to watch Hawks swarm the paw and dance to “All The Way Turned Up” and “All I Do Is Win” but I can not blame you all. You defeated the #1 team and defending state champs. And your fans our very supportive, its good to see alot of fans on the other side. Your coaches are good too. They coached with emotion and passion, something Camden lacked all night. Even Herron recognized that from the kick off. Now I want all of Hillgrove to know, Camden will be expecting you all to get into the playoffs next year. It is kind of the starting of a mini rivalry.
Now any team that overlooks Hillgrove is a foolish team. After seeing them first hand, they are no joke and they deserve some respect. They are like Camden in 2009. After losing to Grayson in the Corky Kell Classic and Hoover at Chris Gilman, everyone doubted that they would even make it past the first round. But they just kept chugging knocking off N. Gwinnett, Lowdnes, Colquitt, and Northside, all of those games they were projected to lose. I will be the first to admit this and I love my Camden Wildcats, Camden got bested. Coach Herron said “Thats what happens when you play in a Region(3AAAAA) with little competition and win State back to back”(Tribune & Georgian Sports). Take this as a complement, Hillgrove you keep doing your thing against Brookwood, but I have to say if you all survive the Bronco Stampede at Brookwood, You all wont survive the Viking Onslaught at the Concrete Palace. You though it got loud in Thunder Alley? In the Palace it gets worse, with a 450+ band along with over 1,000 fans screaming, it is truly a taste of South Georgia football, but keep your focus and above all put God first on the field and you might make it to state.

@BulldawgBite
Camden would like to play N. Gwinnett during the regular season, but no offense Camden has its sights on a bigger prize, this year they came awfully close to possibly playing for a mythical National Championship (If we had beat STA and won State this year) I think NG is doing the right thing by scheduling teams outside the state, It gets old just playing the same people. I think NG would have fun playing teams like Don Bosco Prep, Trinity, St Thomas, Miami Central, South Panola, Hoover, Jenks, Servite, Crenshaw and teams of that caliber. Alot of out of state teams run offense that you see in the playoffs, For example, when Camden played St Thomas and Miami Central both teams ran a variation of the spread, the Camden saw that same spread last Friday night against Hillgrove. Playing out of state teams gets your name out there, even though NG is always ranked in MaxPreps and ESPNRise. But once again Camden would enjoy playing NG or any other in state team, but other teams and states are calling our name.

@JIMB, oh. Your analysis of Brookwood has the chance of being as accurate as if I watched Lowndes vs. Ware County (3-0) and Lowndes vs. Tift County (7-10) and analyzed Lowndes by just those two games. Wouldn’t be very accurate, would it? I’ve watched Brookwood since 1997 and have seen 8 of their games this year, and yes, the two you saw weren’t offensive masterpieces. Parkview was similar. A lot has to do with what team shows up on Friday night, and with these young kids, one never knows. We’re much better offensively, however, than we’ve been in the playoffs in past years.

Friday’s Games will be good Collins Hill at Lowdnes, Grayson at Valdosta, Hillgrove at Brookwood and Mill Creek at Colquitt. Now everyone on here says Gwinnett county will beat all the South Georgia teams. I believe everyone that says that knows the real truth: South Georgia football has a winning tradition, and that tradition will continue this year. There is only one team that could have made a run to state from the southeast and that is Camden, like Northside and North Gwinnett they had a White Water Incident and overlooked those Hawks from little known Hillgrove High School. Wildcat12,

As I stated in another blog…I hope Camden goes undefeated (until they meet Hillgrove again). Your program is incredible and some day when our young school grows up into the state power house that Camden is, it would be an honor for our program to be like yours. I would love to have a mini-rivalry between our schools. I do apologize for some of the boys jumping on the Paw. I thought it was unsportsmen for the boys to do it. I believe both teams left everything on the field that night and the “extra” celebration was not appreciated by many of the parents and school administration.

GwinnettDad – You are one of the few (other than Camden fans) that have given some props to Hillgrove. You’ve also provided great insight to the upcoming game. “Most” in this string of comments, have already put Brookwood playing Lowdnes next week. I hope our boys come to play because your program and fans make it rough on visting teams (I mean that respectfully not taking jabs). This is the second time that you have implied that a Lowndes fan was posting as a Gwinnett fan. While that is not impossible, it doesn’t make it true. Every blogger on here posts under the cloke of annonimity. You don’t ever know who you are talking to on here. Just because you believe something to be true doesn’t mean that it is. Therefore, you shouldn’t then post what you don’t know to be true. You just blasted a Camden fan for posting something you believe to be a lie. By continuing to post that this “a fan” is actually a Lowndes fan you are doing the same thing.

Yo your theory on the overtime thriller is already blown out of the water, due to the fact that by rule teams must go for 2 after the 3rd overtime.

57-12 was the best gift we ever gave you guys. Congratulations!! I know you enjoyed it. Thanks?? No problem, considering 48-6 thumping in 1968, 40-0 whipping in 1969, 41-7 whipping in 1975, 41-0 beat down in 1988, 52-12 Murder in 1994. Also while considering 1522 total points in every game played Valdosta owning 1025 of those points, 57 in one game ain’t bad. Hope to see you in the Dome. Kisses…

@BKSMITH14.. Go find some marbles or jackstones to play with. I can have a decent old fashion rivalry squabble with AVIKINGFAN and have my fun. Not with you, you and I are not in the same category. Go in the yard and play. Chris Brown says it best, “DEUCES”

All of those scores you bring up of the past is about like a grandfather reminding his grandson about how bad he used to beat him.

The problem is that the grandfather is now and old man and the grandson is now in his prime……get used to it.

VALDOSTA WILDCATS AKA the Grandpa Energizer Bunnies. The gift the keeps on giving and giving and giving and giving and giving and giving and giving. Seven in a row and counting. Nobody in your proud history has beaten you seven times in a row except for the Lowndes High Vikings. And like I said, “and counting.”

Speaking of tomorrow night, I am pulling for Valdosta, and think they will win. Lowndes coach Randy McPherson said Valdosta’s front “seven” are the best he’s ever coached against. They match up really well against the Wing T. I doubt Grayson can throw it as well as Lowndes did against Valdosta, and that is what changed the game back in October. Grayson will not wear Valdosta down like they did North Gwinnett, and Valdosta will pull away in the 2nd half.

Hillgrove may very well upset Brookwood, the highest ranked team still in the playoffs in AAAAA. If a team can beat Camden at their place, they can certainly beat Brookwood after a one hour bus ride in traffic they are more than used to.

Colquitt has more speed than Mill Creek has ever seen in their worst nightmares. It won’t be close.

Lowndes will defeat the state’s best QB and a very good Collins Hill team, but it might be a dogfight and a nailbiter. If the Lowndes that played last week against a very good Newnan team shows up to play, they could very well Peachtree Ridge, errr, I almost said “Northside” Collins Hill! But that is reserved for when a totally unknown team upsets an unbeatable powerhouse. And Collins Hill is certainly NOT an unknown team. Everybody has heard about their passing game this year.

@Yo-yo, You’re welcome.. @GainAUB, I think I like you ;) @BKSMITH14, I told you to go outside in the yard and play marbles or jackstones. I never said you are welcome in the house. DEUCES.

Guys, I am a Region1 lover. I love all my teams down south. While we are in this part of the season, lined up on the opposite sides of the brackett, it make since to pull for one another. The lil kid BKSMITH14 started on my Cats and I must defend them. As a matter fact, AVIKINGFAN, took a jab after I told BKSMITH14, “appreciate the gift” but AVIKINGFAN and I had a more friendlier trash talking bout. BUT if you want to go to war with words, I have plenty of ammunition. I BLEED BLACK and GOLD till the DAY I DIE!!

Afan may have disappeared but the sentiment festered, then fostered, then focused, then flourished. LOL to the trash talking, mumbling, grumbling, tumbling, bumbling elicited by the grousing, blousing, and detoxed fans of Lowndes and Valdosta. Boasting and Roasting has left you toasting a little too long in the oven – i.e. burnt by your own words. Gwinnett County is now owns three quarters of the title.
