Last meeting: Statesboro won 7-0 in the 2005 Class AAAA semifinals.
Three things to know: 1. These are traditionally the best programs from regions 2 and 3, which were a combined 8-0 in the first round. Both schools have won 11 GHSA region titles. 2. Griffin’s go-to back is Wontavious Washington (1,381 yards, 15 TDs). DE Xzavier Dickson has 17 sacks. 3. Statesboro came from 21-7 down to beat Tri-Cities 24-21 in the first round. Statesboro tied the game on a touchdown with 2:48 left, recovered a fumble and got a 27-yard field goal from Caleb Brown with 7 seconds left to win.

Flowery Branch at Kell
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, C.J. Kell Stadium, Marietta
Records, rankings: Flowery Branch is 10-1, the No. 2 seed from Region 8-AAAA and ranked No. 8; Kell is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from 5-AAAA and ranked No. 4.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know: 1. Flowery Branch’s headline-makers are QB Austin Brown (163-of-251 passing for 2,447 yards, 24 TDs), RB Jeremy Haley (1,403 yards rushing, 18 TDs) and WR Logan Conley (54 receptions, 1,026 yards, 12 TDs) 2. Kell FB/RB Brian Randolph is a state player-of-the-year candidate. He has 135 tackles and four interceptions on defense. He’s scored 19 touchdowns on offense with 806 yards rushing and 386 receiving. 3. Kell was 6-5 in Class AAAAA last season, and Flowery Branch was 10-4 in AAA. One moved up and the other down in reclassification.

Glynn Academy at Dutchtown
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Bulldogs Stadium, Hampton
Records, rankings: Glynn Academy is 8-3, the No. 4 seed from Region 2-AAAA and unranked; Dutchtown is 10-1, the No. 3 seed from 3-AAAA and unranked.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know: 1. Both teams upset ranked opponents on the road in the first round. Glynn Academy defeated previously unbeaten Lovejoy 7-6, and Dutchtown beat Thomas County Central 15-0. 2. In Glynn Academy’s victory – the Brunswick school’s first state-playoff win since 1968 – Glynn had only 87 yards of total offense, all on the ground. Glynn LB/FB James Dean blocked an extra point and a field goal in the fourth quarter. 3. Dutchtown PK Ryan Kay scored all 15 of his team’s points in the victory over Thomas Central on field goals of 24, 30, 42, 51 and 56 yards. Dutchtown held Thomas Central to 31 yards rushing.

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, The Arena, Johns Creek
Records, rankings: Marist is 9-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 6-AAAA and unranked; Chattahoochee is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from 7-AAAA and ranked No. 5.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know: 1. Chattahoochee QB Tim Byerly is a state player-of-the year candidate. He has completed 105 of 146 passes for 1,854 yards and 26 touchdowns with only one interception. He has rushed for 1,117 yards and 17 touchdowns. 2. Marist’s offense was held without a touchdown in back-to-back games against Lakeside and Dunwoody in midseason. Marist has attempted only 98 passes this season, and QB Andy Perez is the leading rusher with 591 yards. 3. Chattahoochee has scored at least 31 points in every game and at least 42 in each of the last nine. Marist has not allowed more than 20 points in regulation in any game this season. Marist lost to Tucker 31-24 in double-overtime to settle a 17-17 regulation tie.

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Adams Stadium, Atlanta
Records, rankings: Hiram is 9-2, the No. 3 seed from Region 5-AAAA and unranked; Tucker is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from 6-AAAA and ranked No. 3.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know: 1. It’s no secret that Tucker relies on its running game. The Tigers rush for 306 yards per game and pass for 62 and average 46.2 points. Bashr Coles (952 yards rushing) and N’Quan Maggett (790) have combined to score 35 rushing touchdowns. 2. Hiram, which runs a Wing-T led by QB Jared McClain and running backs Trey Wesley (964 yards in the regular season), Javon Simon and Charlie Sashington, averages 32 points per game. 3. Hiram fell behind 7-0 four minutes into its first-round game against Lambert but took advantage of six Longhorns turnovers to win 35-10 and advance to the second round for the second consecutive year.

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Waycross
Records, rankings: Whitewater is 9-2 and the No. 4 seed from Region 3-AAAA; Ware County is 9-2 and the No. 3 seed from 2-AAAA. Neither team is ranked.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know: 1. Whitewater pulled off the upset of the first round, taking a 28-0 first-quarter lead and holding on for a 28-21 victory against top-ranked Northside of Warner Robins. Josh Clemons ran for 200 yards and scored three touchdowns, according to the Macon Telegraph, and the Wildcats held Northside to 48 yards rushing. 2. Ware County’s Zack Griffin kicked five field goals (31, 37, 32, 35 and 38 yards) last week in the Gators’ 22-12 victory against North Clayton. 3. Whitewater, which began playing football in 2004, is in the second round for the second time in school history. The 2007 team lost in the second round to Thomas County Central 35-28. Ware County is in the second round for the fourth consecutive season.

Three things to know: 1. Clarke Central was held to 42 yards rushing in its 52-31 victory against Mays in the first round, but quarterback Martay Mattox passed for 204 yards and three touchdowns. The Gladiators led 28-0 at halftime. 2. East Paulding’s Kamani Thomas rushed for 150 yards and had touchdown runs of 21 and 58 yards in the Raiders’ 35-0 victory against Rome last week. Thomas scored on the third play of the game to give the Raiders the lead for good. 3. Clarke Central, which played in seven state championship games from 1977-1992, is 5-1 in the playoffs over the past two seasons after going from 1998 to 2008 without winning a playoff game.

Last meeting: Starr’s Mill won 45-14 in the first round of the 2005 Class AAAAA playoffs.
Three things to know: 1. Brunswick has a balanced offense, led by quarterback Chris Anderson, that has 2,479 rushing yards and 2,003 passing yards this season. Anderson has passed for 1,783 yards and is the leading rusher with 950 yards on 187 carries. 2. Starr’s Mill is 11-0 for the first time since 2000, its third varsity season, when the Panthers reached the Class AAAAA semifinals before losing to Harrison 31-24 at the Georgia Dome. 3. Starr’s Mill wide receiver Jeffrey Greene, a Georgia Tech commitment, left the Panthers’ 42-9 victory against Hardaway last week with an injured ankle. According to the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, Starr’s Mill believed the injury was a sprain but would not know his status until closer to game time.

Round Two Predictions In Class AAAA
Region 2-AAAA completely swept every team in Region 4 last week. Region 2-AAAA is a very strong Region as evident by the sweeping of Region 4-AAAA in the First Round. Region 2-AAAA had better be taken lightly.
Griffin at Statesboro (Statesboro Advances)
This will be a very tough and close game. Game maybe decided by a Field Goal.

Marist can easily win against Hooch if they play there game which is smart and fundemental. Dutchtown should beat Gylnn.
Tucker should beat Hiram.Ware county and White Water should be great but Ware county should win.

CLARKE CENTRAL is a team that only averages 65+ yards on the ground each game and relies on their QB to complete passes for the points. I still can’t get over Dutchtown not just beating, but dominating TCC. My brother played on those first few Coach Creasman Dutchtown teams that took road trips to places like Northside and TCC to get pounded on a regular basis, and fearing for the kids’ safety the whole time as they took an absolute beating on the field.
Now they’re both sitting at home watching Dutchtown. Amazing how far they’ve come in just a couple of years.

Hooch is a solid team but they play in a weak region. I’m sure I’ll be corrected if wrong but I think everyone in their region got beat last weak. Marist lost a great game to Tucker and had five starters out during their mid season swoon. (A bad loss to Dunwoody, weak win over Lakeside but a nothing to be ashamed of great game with Tucker). A healthy Marist should give an inexperienced Hooch team a challenge. It will be intersting to see how the bigger and more talented Hooch team reacts if things don’t go their way early. If Marist plays like they did against Tucker, the Hooch boys will get their first smack in the face of the year–somebody will actually hit ‘em back instead of lay down.

I live in Bainbridge, but had the chance to watch Dutchtown beat TCC last week. I wouldn’t count Dutchtown out of any game. The play ball-control offense, smash-mouth defense, and can score 3 whenever they cross the 50. Coach Galt will be recruited by many schools after this season ends.

I been posting on here for years now…WIN or LOSE I’m in here talkin’ RAIDER football…This years RAIDER team is a MUCH more balanced team than in years past with the exception of the special teams. Extra points have been missed and we havn’t had the TD returns like in years past.
BUT…they are HITTING hard, have a STRONG “D”, and a smart QB that can pass and complete them…also the running game is HUGE this year.
EAST PAULDING can win this game…I am a bit concerned with comment made by MAY’S posters about the bias of the ref’s and with them associating with CLARKE CENTRAL players and coaches…even to the point of eating with the team! I hope the G.H.S.A. has also noticed these post and addressed this matter. The last thing we need is the kids (from either side)to lose by bad calls!

@WarEagle – I wondered if there was more to the Marist-Dunwoody game.
I think this week’s game may be a good one. There are too many unknowns to predict a 4-5 td victory. Hooch has proven that they can score this year (and last year, avgd 27 per game against 5A competition), and I don’t see that slowing down! Hooch will score!!!
Defense has been solid, but it’s definitely easier to play defense when you’re up by 4 tds. Defense has made the plays when needed though!! Whitehurst was put in at a very, very deep safety spot last week to guard against the big plays, and it paid off. I don’t recall Hooch facing an offensive scheme like Marist’s before, so that may be interesting.
This senior class has been starting for three years (2 against good 5A teams). They’re not “playoff” tested, but they’ve got a lot of experience!
Hooch has met every challenge this year!
Competition for the rest of the year will be strong for all teams. Not sure how anyone can predict a blowout at this point.
That being said, I do like Hooch again this week!
I’m ready for Friday already! GO HOOCH!!

I know a crazy comment like that came from somebody that hasn’t seen him play. there is a reason he was one of the 5 players to watch in the playoffs, Chris sanders was not. Chris Sanders AJC super11? honestly can’t remember. watch a game, you will understand. I’m willing to put money on it that Brian Randolph is the first player from GA to see a college football field next season. Brian Randolph will play early and often at Tennessee.
@ calling out kell : Tucker has to win their side of the bracket as well big dawg. NSWR went down last week, no telling what happens in the playoffs. Tucker has always been a 4A school with what 1 state title and a whole bunch of region titles, Kell is a 5A school playin 4A…idk if anyone wants some of these Longhorns.

You are dreaming on the Brunswick thing. Starr’s Mill runs a spread type offense with a very mobil quick QB that has a solid arm & is accurate for the most part. They have a fast RB & a 6′6″ receiver in Jeff Greene (Tech commit) assuming he plays this week on a bad ankle. Offense for SM is very efficient and has some other possession type receivers that are solid. Brunswick’s D is not good enough to keep them under 30. Starr’s Mill’s D on the other hand is very solid & disciplined.
Starr’s Mill Advances to Quarterfinals & it is a long bus ride back to the coast down I-16. Griffin went home shaking their head, too.

@HoochFan — Should be a good game, if the War Eagles can keep it close in the first half. One of the big advantages that Hooch has is school size, as you’d expect that to give the Cougars more depth. Is that the case, or do many of Hooch’s star linemen or skill players go both ways?

This week’s game at Hooch is going to be one of the most important games in the school’s history. There is no doubt that Marist is a good team and I am sure they are going to come ready to play. I will say that Region 7AAAA is nit as strong as other regions (evident given that the rest of the region is sitting at the house) but the way the boys at Hooch are playing, they can line up with the best in the state.
I am expecting a good crowd on both sides of the stadium given that Marist always travels well and this is the playoffs. I am glad that I have a very good front row seat for the game because “The Arena” is going to be rocking!!!!
For those who are doubting Hooch, I am not even going to acknowledge you because there is a 99% chance that you have not seen Hooch this year, have no real clue what we are putting on the field, have not the slightest clue as to where the school is or better yet, can even spell Chattahoochee.

Offensively–If Hooch can keep #20 (CB) contained to the short side of the field and open up a pass attack, they’ll walk away with the win. Another key is to keep the defensive line from penetrating so you can get the pass off. The DEs are pretty discplined and will get you if you don’t pay attention. If you have time to pass, the other secondary players don’t cover well. The other CB lacks experience, but is fast. The FS does not have speed, nor coverage ability.
If Marist can run down the clock and drive it, they will walk away with the win. The O line is strong and plays assignment football. Once that offense starts clicking, it’s hard to defend. The QB is a magician and is elusive. Marist’s backs aren’t the speediest bunch, but can trick you into leaving your assignments. Marist has a D-1 prospect WR that is seldom utilized, but he is quick and blocks well. From film, one WR loses his cool and engages in a little extracurricular activity when frustrated, but the WRs are basically used as additional blockers. One RB, #22 is extremely quick and will fool you with his size. I can’t find a consistent weakness on Hooch’s defense, except that they don’t stay home at times. Marist will kill you if you don’t.

@ATL I never said Brian Randolph was not an excellent player, I have watched more film on the kid than u could imagine, I am completely aware of what he is capable of doing. For you to assume that I have not seen him play which I have in person and on film is really funny to me. I am not 12 years old, I am not going to speak on spmething I know nothing of. But like I said he is not the best player in the state top 10 yes and that includes top 5 just to be clear. And becides if he were the best in the state how does he get run over and have his “ankles broke” on several plays by a sophmore? Surely if you have seen him play as much as you imply you would be able to answer this. Again not a poke at him or you its just facts, and I am sure he will see plenty of playing time next season lord willing for the very young vols!

Kell a 5a team playin 4a football.. So does this mean all 4a teams are inferior because they have a smaller student body? What does that mean for Kell when/if they loose? Just sayin..

Kell was a 4A team playing up in 5A there enrollment has been down for a couple of years. We just wanted to play up for better competition, and most all the schools around here are 5A so we didn’t have to travel as far.

@ ibleedblackandsilver : sorry don’t recall the ankle braking and running over of Brian Randolph. for every mishap there are about 8 great plays, so I’m not worried about a slip here or there. he does enough on offense to make up for that. hopefully not an angry EP fan, mad as he’ll that your team isn’t as good as Kell. but I’m sorry he doesn’t make every single play. Nor does Ed Reed, Eric Berry or the late Sean Taylor. not comparing just saying those are the 3 best safeties in the last 15 yrs. everyone misses a play here and there. He’s got more instincts than anyone I’ve seen play HS ball in a while. that’s why he will be so successful in the future. and not to many dominate both sides of the ball or can take over a game like Randolph. if he’s not the best I would like to know who is. he has been 1st team 5A the last 2 years, now he will be 1st team 4A, and is well deserving of the POY award. I haven’t seen anyone this yr take control on offense and defense like #37
And I never claimed the rest of the 4A schools to be inferior, but it helps being used to playing bigger and better teams, then dropping down a classification. there are a handful of 4A teams that can do plenty well in 5A. take Hooch as another example, moved down from 5 to 4 and flat out runnin the show. say whatever you want but 5A is overall better than 4A. I think it benefitted each school. East remains in the playoffs as well after their move from 5 to 4. although they are not a traditional 5A school like Kell and Hooch.

@Just The Facts yeah i remember just last week every1 talking bout brunswick wouldnt stop creeksides spread O with the berry brothers. held them to 14 winning 48-14. Starr Mills hasnt seen an offense like brunswicks. We will have yall tired by mid 3rd quarter. Yall just aint fast enough to keep up with us. We are the fastest team yall have faced all year. We win 36-28

Well we will have to wait and see what Raider team shows up, I think they will do just fine, taking nothing away from Stars Mill, they just have not faced competition all year as the Raiders have. What I by that is… 7 of the 12 games they have played have been against teams with records of 500 or worse. 3 in the reg season ans the 2 playoff wins. There as East Paulding 7 of 12 have had records at or above 600 including 2 playoff teams in the reg season (pope,hiram) I know none of this really matters because anything can happen on any given night, all I am saying is East have been playing at a much higher level.. that Rome 35-0 Clarke Central 24-10 ranked 1or2 in the polls neither with a “tough” schedule. So with all that said I hope/thank/pray that East will win by at least 2 scores.
