Validating the bias: Gwinnett teams go 10-1 in first round

It was a fun first round. I still think the score was reversed on the Northside game. I might be ready to believe that Whitewater won, but at no point was the score 28-0. Just don’t believe it. …

No need to kick the Eagles when their down. It had been 13 straight first-round wins until Whitewater beat the No. 1-ranked team in Class AAAA 28-21.

Meanwhile, three of my favorite biases – Gwinnett County, Region 1-AA and Region 6-AA – were impressive in the first round. About 90 percent of the time when there’s a team ranked despite a questionable W-L record, it’s a team from one of these places.

Is there a Gwinnett bias in the AJC rankings? Generally, yes. It’s because Gwinnett teams so often deliver in the playoffs.

Mill Creek 32, Etowah 6.

Parkview was the only Gwinnett team to lose, and it took a 52-yard FG by a region champion playing at home to do it. The rest went 10-0. Four of them won on the road vs. higher-seeded teams.

There was a complaint in an early season Poll Talk blog that it was a Gwinnett conspiracy to have all its AAAAA teams put in two regions, thereby ensuring eight Gwinnett teams would make the playoffs.

Instead, Gwinnett got a bad deal because ONLY eight Gwinnett teams could’ve made the playoffs. Is there any doubt that Peachtree Ridge (which has beaten No. 4 McEachern) and Dacula (which has beaten No. 3 Brookwood) would’ve made the playoffs in just about every region except the ones they played in? Would those teams have won regions 5 and 6?

Meanwhile, Region 1-AA (Thomasville, Fitzgerald, Cook) and Region 6-AA (Buford, Westminster, Lovett) also stood up in the first round. They fare perennial winners in the playoffs: Westminster (7-3) beat North Oconee (9-1), and Lovett (7-3) beat Elbert County (9-1), and Fitz clobbered Dublin. This is why teams like Westminster and Thomasville stay in the rankings with three losses.

Now, for things I wasn’t so smart about. …

-Northside & TCC. Nobody saw Northside coming, but I gave Thomas Central too much benefit of the doubt with its two losses. TCC, which lost 15-0 to Dutchtown, was not a top 10 team.

-Region 3-AAAA: When Griffin couldn’t beat teams badly enough, the Bears began dropping in the polls for winning ugly. Maybe the region was better than we thought. Dutchtown, Whitewater, Starr’s Mill and Griffin all advanced in the first round.

-Grady & Region 5-AAA. I wrote off Grady after the Blessed Trinity loss and wrote off St. Pius after the Grady loss. No teams from this region are rankings, but I’ve got to think at least one ought to be now after a 4-0 sweep in the first round.

-Coastal Georgia: Not saying I should’ve ranked Statesboro or Ware or Glynn Academy or Brunswick, but those teams apparently are pretty goood. That region swept Region 4, which I can’t say that we overrated since Lovejoy didn’t get ranked until it became 9-0.

-Burke/WaCo: Overrated, and I was guilty. In fact, Washington County has been the team that I have most consistently overrated the past three seasons, each time getting as high as No. 5 in AAA only to drop out of the playoffs early.

@HeadEast — Comparing Region 6AAAA to Region 7AAAA is absurd. Just look at the first round competition: Region 7AAAA went 1-3 in the first round, and the 3 losing schools from that region lost by an embarrassing cumulative score of 119-17! Mays, the Region 6AAAA 4th seed, scored 31 in its loss to Clarke Central, a top 3 team in the state — by comparison, Mays only scored 17 cumulative points in its games against Tucker and Marist, so maybe the Region 6AAAA defenses are stronger than you think. Hooch may beat Marist — indeed, it would be a huge upset if Hooch does not win on Friday. But there is no doubt that Region 6AAAA is MUCH stronger this year than Region 7AAAA.

Got to see my 1st GHSF game on Friday. Lowndes was awsome. Just wish when Lowndes and Camden meet it could/would/should be in the finals. At this point it is not possible but I am pretty certain I can see one of them there. By the way, you guys and ladies are not showing enough appreciation for Cook. I also believe they could be in the dome.on 12-10. Looking at the stats and records they could be there.

Assuming the two teams advance this week, who would have home field advantage in a Clinch Co. vs. ELCA matchup in Class A? A potential #1 vs. #2 (poll rankings) battle.

@Bulldawg 15 — Defense is really where NG has excelled. Since Region play started NG has given up 61 points (8 games). Only 40 of those were against the starting defense. That’s and avg of 5 per game. Those 8 games included 4 playoff teams of which 3 are still playing and Peachtree Ridge.

I have listened to the BLOG all year, and there were some good and bad comments concerning SHS Football….I have watched this program from the INSIDE and OUTSIDE and what seems to be the issue EVERY Year is what was stated in an earlier POST. Its not the COACHING, its the realization that our players get to a point where they realize they are NOT as good or competitive as other schools. They ride the train on the off-season training, get in excellent shape and go to camps and show out and get letters and offers from these schools and they think they must be CREAM of the CROP. Lets be real, colleges recruit from camps and may not be even sure what they can actually do on the field. So you have parents in their childs ear saying you must be better than that COACHING staff giving you credit, so just do YOU!!…..Yes Stephenson is NOT a Team, and with the attitude in these players homes, it will NEVER be….people COME or MOVE to Stephenson so their child can get a scholarship..NOT to WIN STATE…if the Coaching staff asked your child to play Off-Guard cause thats our need, but a recruiter wants him a LB, trust me he will tell the Coach I dont WANT TO play it….is that TEAM or INDIVIDUAL…..As far as whats done on the field…SHS has only been a WING-T team for 2-3 years…and averaged over 25 points a game running it last year…we had a defense that only had one returning STARTER…and you saw 2 teams who wanted it MORE, than Stephenson, who when they hit’em in the mouth, INDIVIDUALS started pointing fingers at each other on the SIDELINE…TEAM-MATES admit their wrong and say lets do it RIGHT next time….I got YOU…but these spoiled-rotten, and non-committed parents want the HEAD of the Coach when things just dont go right……And when their child messes up (fumbles, blown coverage, missed blocks, ETC, ETC)….then the parents blame the Coach is not teaching him right…There were so many BLOWN assignements and mistakes by this team the past 2 weeks, it was sickening….but did anyone say THAT, no it must be the COACH!! But those coverages and mistakes were made by D-1 prosepects….Hmmm Parents go figure….Lets get off the MY CHILD concept and say whats does the TEAM need…and BELIEVE in the system and make it WORK!!! He cant hear at practice we are going to make it work and you get home and say it will NEVER work..conflict of interest!!!….And as for the punishment for not starting and UNITY, it was ONLY a select few who wanted to be UNIFIED, not the entire team….. but we are a TEAM….COMMUNITY get the home right first, then maybe we can get the school right!!!!!

REALITY is always the key to CHANGE!!!!

Flyer i see that and commend that to the up most!….My only thing with that is….In 07′ everyone we played was loaded and through everything but the kitchen sink at us. Not to mention Lowndes had Greg Reid. Brookwood had Kenny Miles. Norcross had DJ Adams, Darius Hanks and Bryce Butler, also the current fullback for UGA. Newnan was all Sophmores and Juniors and they were fast and HUGE. Walton had one of the best RB’s in the state. In 08′ NG had one returning “starter” on defense and went 10-3. Norcross still had DJ adams, along with Devon Bolton and that Prince kid. Peachtree Ridge was unstoppable that year. HUGE and fast. Camden was better than everyone. Even the Grayson and Newnan team that were awesome. Thats why i think its been down.

Stephenson Football Alum

Fact are Facts! Stephenson always has great talent and has been Winning on that talent since 2000. Selfish motives have nothing to do with being out coached. It’s the Coaches job to out you in position to make plays! This Year Stephenson did not have as Strong of a Squad like we normally have… but we could have went deep into the playoffs and made a serious run for a Championship with better coaching. This year Gartrell HAD 2 of the most talented RBs in the State and didn’t know what to do with them. They have been saving this Jaguar Team all year. He gives them the ball and hopes they break a tackle or two! Hillgrove coaching staff had a game plan and they out coached us on every aspect of the game and for those of you who witness this game and have followed Stephenson for years will agree… Looked like Collins Hill 1st round lost in 2001…

BAD COACHING…
With 14 seconds left before the half, and inside the ten yard line, with 1 timeout LEFT… Stephenson Coaches did not call a timeout. Instead the QB spiked the ball on 3rd down… So instead of 3rd down with 14 seconds and 2 plays left…. Its now fourth down with 8 seconds left and you end up calling the time out anyways before the play to send out your Field Goal team…. BAD COACHING!!! NOT SELFISH PLAYERS!!!

BAD COACHING!!!!
On every 1st down Coach Gartrell runs a Shotgun formation, running back draw to the left… No seriouly… Every 1st down… BAD COACHING!!!! NOT SELFISH PLAYERS!!!

BAD COACHING!!!
EVERY PASS PLAY was a DEEP FLY… No Combination Routes… No 5 or 10 yard routes (Well maybe a 5 yard Out in the first half)… No TE drags… Just a Deep FLY, like were playing Back yard ball… BAD COACHING!!! NOT SELFISH PLAYERS!!!

Hillgrove’s Offensive Coordinator obvisouly watched game film from Newnan and MLK games. They used there Passing Game and attacked our Defense… we did not make any adjustments the entire first half. NO Schemes, we just took up and hoped for someone to make a play. The inside slot Receiver simply got to the middle of the field for a sizeable gain almost every series with no adjustments. We had 8 men in the box… while Hillgrove ran a spread offense. They out flacked up on everyplay. Which was normally 4 receivers. They attacked the flats and the middle of our cover 2 defense. And as soon as we made adjustments they started running the QB and Running Back draws… In which we have yet to make adjustments… BAD COACHING!!!

BAD COACHING!!!
I could go on but, this is soooo sad. Every year it’s Deja Vo. Our Coach finds a way to lose. From 2002, we lost to Valdosta after being up 21-0 going into half-time. BAD COACHING!!!

BAD COACHING!!!
Last year Colquitt County defeated us 22-21… Late in the 4th Gartrell went for a field goal after a touchdown that put us up 20-19 with less than 3 minutes in the game… instead of going for the 2 point conversion to secure the game so that a field goal wouldn’t beat us! SO we kick a field goal for a extra point… the score was 21-19… and then we kicked the ball right to #4… the same guy that ran almost every kick off back that night… So #4 returned the ball all the way inside the 15. The defense held them up… Colquitt kicked the field goal and went on to win…22-21 BAD COACHING!!! Not Selfish Players!!!

As for all the comments about Stephenson players being Selfish… That’s just not true. Football is a game that depends on a TEAM to win every game, period!!! It’s the coaches JOB to put us in a position to make Plays! Trust me if that was the issue, you could see it every game. We give 110% and it started when we played ball together at the age of 9 and 10 all the way to our Senior Seasons. Stephenson is a Program that is a product of a Good Community… not the Coaching Staff… The 02 and 03 Teams played together since Redan Park and so on and so forth to Wade Walker…

Every year Stephenson is outcoached… Period!!! Gartrell is defeated every year!!!

East Paulding this is a update on Clarke Central Cheaters, please be advised that the Referees do eat pre-game meals with the team ( go figure)they will not call any penalties on their team not even a hold and a hold could technically be called on any play, you will not get a fair spot on the ball, legal play will be interuppted by the ref giving them time to talk to the coaches outside the huddle,3rd and short will turn into 4th and long, refs will be serve gatorade by Clarkes coaches( What the H#!!). This was Mays second time playing this team and the same cheating still exist and even worst . This Clarke Central team is not a champion team point blank period . They have the help of the refs.Beside playing their local teams I can see where they have cheated other teams with bad refs. They could’nt truly feel like champs, it got so bad that Mays football team was laughing at them due the fact that even they had realized they needed to cheat to play strong it was a embarasssssment to Clarke Central and Athens.Adults may think they are helping but Stevie Wonder could see the cheating. But the players didnt feel or look like they where winning at one point in this game even they looked as if they had a hard time accepting the win due to the cheating their body language was not of winners .This team will not and can not beat Mays and or East Paulding without their refs!!!! Remember Clarke Central a winner never cheats and a cheater never truly wins. I know the players dont feel good about the win because they have not even posted since their Big Cheat.Go East Paulding !!!Go Raiders!!!!!!

@Bulldawg 15– I wouldn’t disagree with you about the teams in 2007. They were stout no doubt. we will see in a couple of years how the players on the teams that have played this year end up. I do know they have played plenty of teams with great players this year. Time will tell how good they will eventually be.

Let me put my 2 cents in on the Stephenson talk. I think the kids at Stephenson are excellent and the coaching is good as far as preparing the kids to play game in and game out in their region. The problem I see is their scheme on offense. You cant just line up against a good playoff team in AAAAA and hand the ball off without some type of misdirection or deception. My son plays for Hillgrove so I was at the game on Saturday and witnessed first hand what their problem is. Offense was as basic as basic can get. Hillgrove’s defense didn’t have to find the ball. Which ever way the flow of the play started that’s the way the ball went. No misdirection. You won’t beat many good teams like that. I think I counted only 2 misdirection plays all night from the Jaguars. I’m sure in the region Stephenson plays in they can just line up and blow teams off the ball. That doesn’t happen very much in the playoffs with good teams. One dimensional teams go home early. I think that’s one of the problems at Stephenson that I saw.

On the topic of the caliber of kids playing at Stephenson, you can’t fool college recruiters. The tape doesn’t lie. All the kids at Stephenson that go D1 are D1 caliber. The one’s that go D2 are D2 caliber and so on. Stephenson just does a better job than most high schools with getting their kids seen and evaluated by colleges. Can’t hate on them for that. That might me a curse though.

I think the fact that they do such a good job of getting their kids scholarships makes the expectations that much greater. Watching the game on Saturday I can honestly say they are a good team but not a great team. The fact that they can run that pee wee offense and dang near go undefeated every year is amazing and speaks to the talent on the field that they have.

That’s my 2 cents.

carrolton vs peach county in a few weeks sounds like a game i want to go see,i think these schools could win state at the AAAA or AAAAA catagory this year,i like colquitt but the defense has gotten a little bit better but they are still way to soft, in the begining of the year they were pittiful, man if lowndes was as sharp as they were in 07-man they would have smashed colqquits defense to smitherieans,

I think the Stephenson argument is a moot point. They lost again for whatever reason. They will have 15 or 20 guys sign with colleges, which should NEVER be overlooked. A kid being able to continuing their education is a BIG DEAL. Having a championship ring while working the fast food drive thru is only cool if you are still in school. You can’t better yourself with a Ga state title…it would be nice to have, but ask the many players that now have their college degrees if they would trade it for a title. With that said those are issues for that school and that community to work out. Nobody in that bracket is going to beat Camden County. I don’t care what they do, how fired up they are there will be no upsets. Even if Lowndes doesn’t make it, Camden will be there waiting for whoever makes, but I expect Lowndes.

Ok Mike and Ed, those were rational arguments. Let’s all stop drinking the Koolaid and consider the following. This time of year at playoff time, espectially iin the 2nd round, it does not matter how strong your “region” was. It matters from the 2nd round on which teams play solid fundamental football. Good tackling, no turnovers, solid special teams, and most importantly good defense. Roswell did not play good defense against Parkview as I posted earlier had some players out with injury (Nose tackle and starting running back) . Having said that, Roswell will likely win in a ugly ball-control game. Collins Hill players and fans stormed the field after the “GAME 1″ victory against Roswell at your place(in the regular season)…………Dont really know what else to say about that. Collins Hill is very good this season but your region won’t be playing on friday, it will be just CH. So stop the Gwinn “Region” talk because it wont matter who you played in your region. It will matter that your guys need to know how to block and tackle. While I do expect a close game, I expect Roswell to win by between 3-7 points.

@ Tiger4Life…

I look for HIRAM to play a good hard game and it may end up a bit closer than you think…HIRAM has won several games this year where they “snuck-up” on the other team. TUCKER,by schedule strength and scoring appears to be the stronger team BUT that’s why we play the game.

AS for your CLARKE CENTRAL / EAST PAULDING prediction, that one you are just WRONG on…EAST PAULDING is FIRED up for this game…they just absolutely DOMINATED ROME last friday night 35 / 0!!! YES, CLARKE CENTRAL won 10 games this year (11 with the playoff win) but 6 of the regular season game wins came against teams with .500 or less records, several against 1 win or 0 win teams?!?!?!? So the question HAS to be out there…Is CLARKE CENTRAL really that good or have they YET TO BE TESTED?

Friday night I promise you THEY WILL BE TESTED! Our RAIDERS will be coming to play and will hit them and HIT THEM HARD from the opening play to the final play! They WILL get pushed all over the field and POINTS will be scored!!! The RAIDER “D” is averaging allowing barely 10+ points per game!!!

Plans are being made and the RAIDER NATION is heading to ATHENS…CLARKE CENTRAL will be SHOCKED to look across the field at the visitors side ROCKIN’ from the start cheering our RAIDERS on to WIN #2 in this years playoffs!!! ROUND 3 will be BACK in “THE BONEYARD” on Nov. 26th…the only question is against who?????__________________________________!!!

That team could have beaten a lot of teams in the playoffs amd thats no joke. now in saying that i am not including peach, cairo or sandy creek. but that was a good playoff caliber team. the 63-20 score dont do any justice in telling yall how good they were. but as good a team as they were the trojans still could have scored 80 points had it not been for a runnning clock and the starters being on the bench.

@Roswellhortnets – I think the Roswell/CH game will be a good game, however, I think that there will be more points put on the board this time around, more like last years 1st round game. As far as the kids running on the field after the 1st game, I believe there was a lot of concern and talk on behalf of the CH community about the difficulty of the first 4 games on the schedule(Roswell, Brookwood, MLK and N.Gwinnett) and the possibility of starting 0-4, especially having a new head coach and a new system on offense. So the excitement of that win was pretty high.

B-TownWolves4Peat—Nawfside is in AAAA now. Probably a good place for Gwinnett teams to go play if they want to win the big one.

@DeKalbAlum……….It’s not the posters blaming anyone! Stephenson fans made the statement, getting scholarships trumps winning championships! And my point is, why not strive for both? In my opinion, the getting scholarships thing is an excuse! What player doesn’t want to win a championship? It’s the Stephenson fans who are tongue lashing their coaching staff on this board, not the other posters! All I’m saying is when you get on this site and brag about how many D1 players you have on your team, then your team goes out and lays an egg on the field against a team that’s supposed to have lesser talent, there’s a problem at more than one level!

@ yo

I am very well acquainted with the Tucker High School football tradition and their level of excellence. I have a very close relative who is a member of the Tucker athletics Hall of Fame and have been following that schools athletic program for over

The coach there gets the job done and the kids and community respect him for it. I see Tucker to continue being a force for many years to come.

@REALLY”TRUE JAGUAR” FAN………You are the most reasonable Stephenson fan I’ve read so far! No disrespect to other Stephenson fans, but most of you are seeing with your hearts and not your heads! If you have a team that does not care about winning championships, believe me, they NEVER will!

@anijahsdad Thanks for noticing the facts. Your Right the Offense we run is a Pee Wee Offense…

Now imagine being a player and a parent and every year it’s the same old story… It’s VERY Frustating to know that you have the talent to play and win the big games… but every season you fall short… because of the Coaches!!!

As far as the Recruiting… Colleges started to come to Stephenson because of the Players in the early 2000s.. Fact the coaches we were responsible for getting us into college… We did. Now during the spring there may be anywhere from 100+ College Scouts stopping by to see Stephensons Players. We have a pipeline of all around Good Kids that go to college and help collegiate programs!!!

Hillgrove was a very well coached team that did not make any mistakes,I like your coach he took chances and put his players in position to win it. Your QB has a lot of heart and carried his Team. Good Luck this Season and I would not be surprised to see you guys deep into the playoffs, especially if you take down Camden!!! Good Luck!!!

MCH Tiger, thanks for pointing out the fact that anyone who has to travel into the Valley of the Football Gods will have to deal with the ignorant folks from the Valley who choose to hang out on the visitors side. I wanted to warn you of this last week, after having read your comments on how nice the Sandy Creek experience was. However I didn’t want to sound like a sore loser since Baldwin had just made its regular season sacrifice to the football gods. And your right, they can be beat by the passing game, our guys just decided they weren’t going to catch the ball that night. So be warned Thomson, you will have to deal with some ignorant Valley folks Friday night, and they will not share their Jack Daniels with you, just leave you the empty bottle when they leave midway through the second half. Now before everyone blast me from PC, yes you have some very respectable and decent fans, I work with quite a few of them, however they all sit on the home side. Good luck to the remaining 16 teams in AAA we are the class, class in the state.

To all … To compare 6AAAA to 7AAAA is crazy. Our region is not the same talent, but Hooch will surprise all.

This weekend – should be Tucker, but I’m taking Hiram by 3 with the strong leg of the left footed kicker – 24-21

Also, EP beats CC
Kell whips FB by 3 TDs
And last — to all my Marist friends — you lose by 5 tds in the second worst loss in War Eagle playoff history

@amaysing. Everyone else is right. Quit blaming our loss on the refs. Maybe I would agree if it wasnt a 21 point deficit, but be happy. We lost by 3 points last year, and put up 31 on them this year. The kids played their hearts out and got beat by the better team. No shame in that at all. Personally im gona root for our region (Tucker and Marist) and hope that one of them can bring the title back to our region. I think we r lucky actually. We might not get far in the playoffs, but we were in the same region as the AAAA champ last year too. We r a good luck charm. Good luck to all temas still in the playoffs and Mays lets try to get back to the AAAA boys basketball championship this year! If u aint a Raider then ur a hater!!!!
