It’s Alabama over Georgia, Clemson and Florida for one of nation’s top prospects

One of Georgia’s top uncommitted basketball prospects said on Tuesday that he will sign with Alabama over Georgia, among others.

South Atlanta High’s Nick Jacobs announced his college decision, with Alabama edging out Clemson. Georgia and Florida were the other finalists. It was tough news again for Georgia, which lost Milton High power forward Julian Royal in a head-to-head battle with Georgia Tech last week. Both Jacobs and Royal are ranked among the nation’s top 100 college basketball prospects.

“I liked all the schools, but picked Alabama because it was the best fit for me,” Jacobs said. “I had built a close relationship with Alabama’s coaches and players. I like Alabama because it’s a winning program and I know we have the talent to win an SEC championship.”

The 6-foot-8, 255-pounder admitted that he was leaning to Clemson before taking his four official visits. After the whirlwind tour of recruiting trips, his mind changed several times before settling on Alabama.

Regarding Georgia, Jacobs said he “loved the coaches and players” but wanted to play a little further from home.

Jacobs averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds last year at South Atlanta.

“[Alabama] is going to get a good kid who is very strong and knows how to use his body in the post area,” South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick said. “He has a great work ethic and wants to be the best he can be.”

“He wanted to play a little farther away from home?” He couldn’t see himself in front of 374 screaming admirers in Stegeman Auditorium?

Turned down all that National Exposure? In Danielsville?

I think he meant the entire schools winning tradition, not just the BBall program.

Sometimes it just hard to understand why a young man decides to go out of state and the reasons he gives. You just wish him luck and move on.

Why would he go to UGA when Julian Royal is going there.

I wish the AJC would not cover any of the prospect once they pick a school that is not UGA or GA Tech. If they want to go out of the area then let that area put their mug shots (no pun intended) in the paper.

I think UGA needs to hire the recruitor from Clemson in football and basketball. Can you believe that Clemson is even in the running for a player from Georiga over UGA? What are these guys selling? I grew up in Athens…went to UGA….and live in South Carolina…I’m surprised how successful the recruitors are in Georgia from Clemson.

Anthony Grant is the perfect role model, especially for black youth, He is the epitome of success: handsome, top of his profession, married with two beautiful children. He is Damon Evans BP (before panties).

Even though they don’t say so, I think that is a factor. We were never able to get guys like Jacobs before he came to Alabama. And if I recall correctly, the AJC ran an editorial begging UGA to hire him. UGA passed, Bama hired him, and this is the result.

Jacobs knew he would be a backup this year at UGA or Tech and he went where he was promised he could start.
