Score one for the little guys.
Norcross High’s Alonzo Nelson-Ododa turned down basketball scholarship offers from Wake Forest, North Carolina and California to commit to the University of Richmond.
“He wavered a lot,” Norcross coach Jesse McMillan. “He has been going through the decision for over a month now. He felt like Richmond was the place where he felt most comfortable and where he could contribute early.
“Richmond may be smaller, but they have a heck of a program. They beat some good schools last year.” Richmond defeated a pair of SEC teams, Florida and Mississippi State, and lost in overtime to Wake Forest.
The 6-foot-8 Nelson-Ododa had built a relationship with Richmond before his stock soared over the summer at camps. “The Richmond staff had been recruiting me the longest and hardest and I thought that showed their commitment to making me a better player and helping me reach my goals”.
Nelson-Ododa averaged 14 points and 8 rebounds as a junior last year at Winder-Barrow before transferring to Norcross.

[...] Score one for the mids on the recruiting trail. Norcross (GA) senior forward Alonzo Nelson-Ododa picked Richmond over California, NC State and DePaul yesterday. Maybe this isn’t too much of an upset after all, as it’s likely that UR will be far better this coming year than any of those schools (we’ll believe in the Sidney Lowe’s Wolfpack when we see it…). Notice to the Haters… We should ALL be happy for this young man! Just because you couldn’t get Full Ride College Scholarship Offers of this Magnitutde, doesn’t mean you should hate on this young man! He obviously has it together, basketball and grades together, because not only did he have all of THESE schools offer, I was informed that he also had offers from Harvard, Penn State, and Colorado, to name just a few.
We support Any of our Norcross players receiving a full ride scholarship. Good Luck at University of Richmond and Congrats!

Loyalty? Why did he transfer to Norcross from little ole Winder-Barrow if loyalty is so high on his list?

Loyalty? Last time I checked loyalty didn’t win games or make anyone better. You gotta go where the action is, and that’s what one does…keep it real….

UNC wasn’t in the race. NC State was. I don’t recall hearing that he ever had a commitable offer from NC State, but I know they were in the race til the end. Like the story states, Richmond had been following him for a longer period of time, has a good program and can offer him more early playing time. Best wishes to Alonzo.
