Sandy Creek will retire the jersey No. 81 of Calvin Johnson at its game tonight against Spalding.
Johnson went on to become an All-American wide receiver at Georgia Tech. He now plays for the Detroit Lions.
Johnson was an all-state player at Sandy Creek in 2003, the first season in which the Fayette County school won a region title. Sandy Creek can clinch its fifth region title by beating Spalding.
Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker, who was an assistant during Johnson’s high school career, said Johnson blossomed as a player between his sophomore and junior seasons.
“He really came on as a junior,” Walker said. “He was a tall, gangly guy when he came here, and he was 6-4, 200 when he left. He was one of the hardest workers who ever came through here.”
