Milton High’s Julian Royal, one of the nation’s top 100 college basketball prospects, heard a lot of things from Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt during his official visit this past weekend.
One thing that really stuck out is that Hewitt considers Royal the “No. 1 recruiting priority” for Georgia Tech this year. The 6-foot-9 power forward is likely to decide between Georgia Tech and UGA, while also considering Wake Forest.

Georgia Tech entertained Milton's Julian Royal over the weekend (AJC)
“[Being the top priority] was made very clear to us … no doubt about it,” said Royal’s father, Charles. “I was aware of some other kids they were interested in at some point but that apparently has dropped off. [Hewitt] made it clear that Julian was the guy they wanted above and all anything else. They even pulled out the depth chart, and if you look at it, it makes sense. It means a lot to Julian that Georgia Tech thinks so highly of him and has such big plans for him.”
Another important issue that was addressed during the visit was Georgia Tech’s social life for its students. Like most teenagers, Royal wants to attend a college where he can enjoy the social scene. Hewitt and his staff members talked about the subject.
“You constantly hear from people, and not just other college coaches trying to sway him away, that Atlanta is not a college town,” the elder Royal said. “You kind of identify Atlanta with being a city, but there are a lot of colleges down there and something always going on. If there’s nothing going on at Georgia Tech’s campus, then you can go right down the street to Georgia State, Morehouse, or Spelman. They were able to point that out in a nice way.”
Now Royal has visited archrivals Georgia Tech and UGA, which school has the lead for Royal’s services? “They were similar in a lot of ways. In some ways, I guess what it comes down to is this: Do you like the city or do you like the country? When you spend time walking around both college campuses, they are both very nice,” the elder Royal said.
“They are both great schools. Can you say that one is better than the other? I don’t know. I can’t say anything negative about either visit. I know Julian’s decision isn’t going to be an easy one. I guess we’ll wait and see how it all plays out.”
Royal will start working toward a decision after visiting his third finalist — Wake Forest — on Oct. 9.

Seems pretty simple. If he wants to party, go to UGA. If he wants to play in the ACC, on TV all the time, and have a good chance at the NBA then go to GT.

I like Tech and UGA basketball team but Fox is a much better coach than Hewitt. As a matter of fact, I can’t believe that Hewitt still has a coaching job because the man is a horrible coach. The man have had his share of talents but he cannot win a championship when he get them. Hewitt and Mr.Richt are equals. That’s a bad thing.

LAWDAWG= Redneck who watches jerry springer reruns and should be thanking the american taxpayer for your unemployment checks!
GT was in the postseason and played for the ACC title last year moron, while you guys were sitting at home! When was the last time you guys graced the final 4? You care to discuss how many all americans GT has put out compared to ugay? ACC compared to the SEC top to bottom in hoops?? Enough said

bascogcjs, You want to breakdown how many titles the ACC has compared to the SEC in the last 15 years? The SEC couldn’t hold the ACC jock strap. How misinformed could you really be? Carolina and duke have dominated the last dew years alone and what conference again do they represent? If the kid wants to play real hoops, he will go to wake or GT. Fox is a great coach..yeah, talk to me when he actually has a winning record! Comparing UGAY to GT is like apples to oranges. When has UGAY even soldout a game in hoops in it’s existence? Pathetic program up in the cesspool known as athens

How delusional you GT fans are. Hewitt didn’t put any of these players in the NBA — they got there because of their talent. It seems to me hardly any of the players improved being coached by Hewitt — their raw talent got them to the NBA as well as playing against talent in the ACC. I can promise you this: if these players at GT had played for Fox, UGA would have already won several NCAA championships.

The only reason Hewitt still has a job is because GT can’t even afford to buy out his contract. Talk about rewarding an incompetent coach.

Douglas, thanks for helping make my point…GT gets REAL talent at least and does go to the postseason and has gone to the final four not long ago and played for the national title. We even beat the same uconn team that year by 20 earlier. We have beat the dukes, carolinas, maryland and other top ACC teams that always are ranked nationally and no other conference puts more teams into the NCAA tourney than the ACC. The truth hurts i know. When has georgia ever stepping up on the big stage in hoops and done something important in the postseason? I know, NEVER!!

Dirt, you look up the titles.
The SEC has fared just as well.
And Ga. has sold out a lot of games.
And with the refurbished coliseum this year, it puts Tech’s
to shame, not to mention the number 1 practice facility in the country.

Since 1994, the SEC has won 5 championships compared
to the ACC’s 4, “ugaystandsforjoedirt”, TOOL.
It’s a myth about acc basketball prowess perpetuated by
blowhards like Mike Patrick and Vitale.

BASCOGCJS, where do you get your facts from, the huffington post?? NIce try joke. UGAY had alot of sold out games?? When? I needed a good laugh today and you provided it with your b.s and non facts. How many titles has ugay played for in their conference or on the national stage compared to GT? I don’t know any former UGAY player who could have held the jock strap of price, sally, dennis scott, anderson, oliver, forrest, best, harpring, crittenton, or chris bosh. Now go back to flipping burgers, i will take a #1 with ketchup loser!
GEORGIA= garbage on the national scale in hoops! Ugay blows a** in hoops, keep dreaming!

Hops Coach: Chill! a slight hyperbole. But there is one of the best collection of HS players I have ever seen assembled on one team #’s 1 thru 7. The don’t like each other part – don;t know about that, I haven’t heard it. just b/c they don’t play on the same aau team in summer doesn’t mean anything. You a Wheeler fan? or Ncross?

joedirt and damon, tools, SEC has won five last 15 yrs. just like I said.
And ACC has won five also.
If you’d bother to pay attention, SEC has had just as much success as ACC in tourney advancement. You are just too predjudiced to realize this.
And if you’d bother to research our attendance records, you would be surprised how well we’ve done minus the Dennis Felton years.
