Newton (4-0) is ranked for first time since 1995

Newton is ranked for the first time since 1995, entering the poll at No. 10 in Class AAAAA place of idle Grayson.

That was a tough call because some will say that beating Newnan (1-3) doesn’t mean what it used to, and that Newton didn’t look that great in doing it. Newton committed six turnovers, and Newnan was without its top running back.

But I try to ignore that stuff because it’s a slippery slope of subjectivity. Bottom line is that Newton is unbeaten against a similar schedule that Grayson (3-1) has faced, so in go the Rams. They’ll have to validate their ranking against East Coweta (4-0) this week.

One thing I like about ranking Newton (although it had no factor in the decision) is that it sheds light on an interesting story over in Covington. Newton fired its coach, Nick Collins, just before the season and promoted Cortez Allen to replace him. The team has persevered.

Also, there’s a running back named Akeem Hunt who has been perhaps the state’s best back that nobody talks about. He rushed for 133 yards in the win over Newnan, scored the winning TD in overtime and also ran a kick back 96 yards to get Newton in the game after it trailed 15-0 in the third quarter. …

Other rambling thoughts …

Warner Robins is 0-4 for the first time since 1966. That’s also the year that Northside beat Warner Robins for the first time ever, and it game in Warner Robins’ fifth game. Warner Robins plays Northside. …

Kell has beaten five straight unbeaten teams. All five – Etowah, Woodstock, East Paulding, Hiram and Grayson — still would be unbeaten if not for losing to Kell. Next for Kell? Unbeaten Pope. That’s pretty cool. …

Camden County has called off school Friday so that students and staff can travel to Fort Lauderdale to see the Camden-St. Thomas Aquinas game. Win that one and Camden is a serious threat to win some sort of national title. …

Congrats to Marion County (5-0), which is ranked for the first time ever this week. Only one in 187 Georgians can find Marion County on a map.

Valdosta beats Brunswick 64-62, and Lowndes beats Ware County 3-0. Weird.

Cook plays Fitzgerald in a big one Friday in Region 1-AA.

More big games that I haven’t mentioned …

Valdosta (5-0) at M.L. King (3-1)

even though alot of yall want to jump off the Newnan bandwagon… this is still a playoff team that lost a major piece and to me, still played good football. I know it has always been said to never make excuses for losing but, i think Newnan has a pretty good excuse. They lost one of the best RB’s in the state of Georgia.

WITH CHRIS ROBINSON:

1 WIN, AND LEADING IN 1ST HALF OF P’TREE RIDGE GAME (before Robinson ankle injury)
17.4 ypg/ per rush
21.2 ypg/ per play action pass

LEMOND ANDERSON WITH CHRIS ROBINSON AS STARTER:

1 WIN, AND LEADING IN 1ST HALF OF P’TREE RIDGE GAME (before Robinson ankle injury)
12.2 ypg/ per rush
21.2 ypg/ per play action pass

LEMOND ANDERSON AS STARTER

3 LOSSES AND LOSING IN 2ND HALF OF P’TREE RIDGE GAME (after Robinson ankle injury)
6.3 ypg/per rush
13.2 ypg/ per play action pass

Newnan’s defense has been sturdy playing behind D1 College Prospects, ILB Alberry Melson and OLB Trevor Tanner. S Tray Matthews is only a sophomore and plays the run like Newnan’s former star safety Alec Ogletree but with better ball skills (4 INT’s in 4 games, 3 against Newton) Defense has been without anchor DT O.D. Pittman. Back-up’s James Primm (#47) and Randale McGruder (#79) have played great.

#45 will come back and run like hell. even though they are hanging by a thread….

I DONT THINK WE HAVE HEARD THE LAST OF THE NEWNAN COUGARS

I enjoyed reading the comparison of AAAA vs AAAAA. I must say this talk comes up after 4 teams left 5A and drop down to 4A. That is very interesting now that the reclassification took effect. Yes your right 4A may have more teams that will compete on a higher level but remember they choose to not to play up like some teams that are still in 5A. Some 4A teams could have played up but they choose to stay where they are. I am not sure where I’m going with this but all i am saying if they schools want to win a state title and couldn’t do it in there original Regions before moving down then I guess they said the competetion is still good but not as hard if I stayed in 5A. You all talk about Stephenson as if they are some scrub school. Rest assured Stephenson is there year in and year out and still playing up. Who is to say if Stephenson dropped to 4A they they would not have won a state title by now? It’s obivious that the program is doing something right for the last 10 years.

@GHSF DAILY your entitled to your opinion, but when you say that Dekalb county schools lack coaching or discipline I must disagree. You will have alot of bloggers agree with you when you say this about Dekalb Schools, but you sir are a Homer. I always hear you talk highly of South Georgia, Gwinnett. I can’t wait until the day comes when you and the rest of these bloggers have to say Well a Dekalb County school won it all in 4A and 5A there is a strong possibility it could happen this year. Let me be the first to tell you this. Until then I will let you and your bloggers argue the point who can will win it all. Toddles

Swagg08, you just made the case for most folks on here. It takes more than 2-4 good players to win. Those players on the sideline have to step up, that’s what make programs great. Players can step in and teams not miss a beat. Programs that constantly rotate players create experience on the sidelines and establish a competitive nature amongst themselves. Therefore when 1 player goes down, there is always somebody there to step in. To address One On One With The Great One. Stephenson has always had a good team. But, they have yet to parlay that team into a State Champion. The talent has always been there, but, they cannot get over the hump. Why? Is it the system? Is the players? Is the coaching? Is it the goal they set each season? No concern about a State Title? Remember Buffalo went to ball often, but never achieved that last dance. A program has to get the kids to buy into the system and not themselves. I think that once this occurs at Stephenson then they will take that next step. I have to admit that Stephenson is a college producing machine. However there are championship programs that turnout next level players as well, however they are not as well known as Stephenson, maybe the coaches keep that chatter until the team gaol is accomplished. If I was a player and knew that I was already committed to play at the next level, why would I risk injury? Why would I go all out every friday? I am talking about once the playoffs start. That’s where Stephenson has it’s issues. During the regular season, yes they can win 9-10 games. But when the playoffs start, they fall off. Their production is not there. Why? Just something to think about. Not Stephenson bashing, but when a program signs 29 athletes to D-1 schools, something is wrong when you can’t win a state title, no matter AAAA or AAAAA.

Folkston is the best team no one knows about. Charlton county won numerous state titles this decade and has been equal or better than Buford every single year this decade. That is consistancy! their head coach Coach Mac is one of the best coaches in the state. You can ask any Camden fan if their warm up game against charlton is ever easy and their answer will be no. likely they will win it all this year in single A. They could give any ga team a run for their money with their pure athleticism matched with coaching. They have been down the past couple seasons if you consider not making it past quarterfinals a down year.

5A might have some of the best teams but from top to bottom 3A is by far the deepest class. There are so many teams that could make a run in the playoffs and win it all. In 5A more than likely camden will win it they really have very few challangers outside of lowndes and peachtree ricge. 4A tucker, griffin, and northside are the teams to beat. In 2A the same could be said about carver and buford. In class a it’s going to be hard to beat charlton county. Lincoln, wilcox, and weslyan could challange

I have a lot of respect for Lowndes, which only decreased slightly after the performance at Grayson. The football looked pretty good, but the coach and lack of discipline were pretty bad.
In my opinion the rankings are pretty good right now. You’re a toss up with McEachern, the game proved that, and neither you or McE can beat NG, P’ridge or Camden until proven otherwise. You should cruise through a couple of rounds of playoffs, now that NSWR is back in AAAA, until you run into one of the top three teams.

@Gatorbait… All I am saying bloggers always seem to base state titles in fromt of educationally values. I totally agree with you and the rest of tyhe bloggers saying Stephenson has not won the BIG ONE YET. But as I tell people, “a sleeping dog don’t lie sleep forever”. I know that the players bought imto the system because they are still winning football games. I know the coaching is good because if not they would have been fired a long time ago. I will say over the past 5 years Stephenson has been a producing machine of talent of players. Now it’s time to put everything together and win the BIG ONE. Hopefully you and other bloggers will get a chance to see this team play and Stephenson will go deep into the playoff and see one of your teams in the Dome.

BulldawgBite, I think you might want to take a look at the actual record between P Ridge and North before you make yourslef look bad. PTR has not been around that long, so there are not really that many games to search.

And just for fun, you might also want to take a look at the record between North and Norcross over the last decade. Having seen most of those games, when Norcross is good it is in large part due to their defensive secondary. A defense like that can give fits to North, but is less likely to be effective against the offense of PTR.

The long and the short of it is that North could wind up 3rd in Div 7AAAAA with a few bad bounces.

But, for the sake of argument, let’s assume that PTR and North will finish 1st and 2nd in the division. And that Valdosta and Lowndes will finish 1st and 2nd in their division. The playoff brackets look VERY interesting. If Lowndes cannot beat Valdosta then they will earn themselves a dream vacation of a playoff game in Suwanee GA. Maybe it will be Valdosta? Maybe neither one of them will make it that far in the playoffs? The Div 1AAAAA runner up will have to handle McEachern at McEachern to even get to Suwanee. Hmmmm, more pressure on Lowndes to win that game against Valdosta.

The season gets more and more interesting, with some outstanding games still to be played. Personally, I believe with Flowery Branch and Kell still in the hunt, NSWR might want to hold off a bit on ordering the rings. In contrast, Camden might as well go ahead, now, and make hotel reservations close to the dome.

blu eagle : I am sure that all of the other single A fans are excited to here that “nobody goes” to class A. It so happens that our school should have been in class A ball for a few years. We elected to play up at the cost of our other sports, not because we could not compete in football. We had about 1/2 the students most of the AA teams had and yet we were able to field a very competitive football team, however that is not the only sport that our school has. With such a small school it makes it hard to keep the other sports up to par, because most of our athletes play sports year around. In alot of the bigger AA schools they have baseball, softball, and basketball players that play all year in their particular sport, here they only play during that particular season.

@ Suwanee Ownz..your detailed explanation to proving me wrong was unecessary. i was referring to the last four years, not this year(an exception, where as schools like Norcross and Pridge have move ins anually for football) Even such players like Tamburo who lived in Collin Hill’s district when he was younger, but my whole point was that gwinnett schools have players taken and lost consistently at all levels of football in gwinnett. I was saying that cases like kevin minter talking to NG’s head coach about transferring and living with the Tamburo’s, falling through, prove my point about gwinnett schools being equal to any AAAA school in numbers of talent because of constent circulation of the talent. So it is clear that Gwinnett teams are just better than AAAA teams for the majority because they are just better. Take Mill Creek for example. well over 4,000 students but can barely make it to the playoffs on a yearly basis. My post was for everyone who was saying population matters always in how good teams are. You would have to agree with me that the players that do move into North’s district (whether it be when they were 6, 7, or 8, or soph. junior, or senior in HS) are not as big time prospects as say Norcross, Pridge, Brookwood,Collins Hill, Berkmar, and even Meadowcreed. Oh and those last two schools send more kids D-1 than NG every year. It is simply a coaching advantage. NG has sent 5-6 players in the last four years to D-1 schools. Just because NG has more students than say Kell does’nt mean they would beat Kell because of having more players, they would beat Kell with less big time players because they are coached better and play smarter. I repeat by saying “neighborhood” kids because Pridge, Collins Hill, Buford, and NG have kids living in the same neighborhood. Some go to one school, some go to others.
I’m kinda rambling now because i lost my train of thought but i want to make sure that you understand what i mean’t in my earlier post. Wait i thought you were a Ridge fan judging by previous post on here? So would’nt that null what you responded to my post with?

BullDawg 15, I am a fan of all 3 Suwanee schools: Collins Hill, North, and PTR. I have coached kids who currently play for all 3 schools. I respect the coaching staffs and players at all 3 schools. I am very pleased to see that CH is putting together a “nasty” offense that is going to give some teams fits.

I never, ever, cheer for Buford even though I respect the staff and players.

One of my kids currently plays for one of the Suwanee schools. I may see you at a game eventually. Now that the weather is colder, I will probably wear my college hoody. I went to the same college that produced the FIRST Heismann trophy winner.

I am very pleased to see the progress at Flowery Branch. I think they have a great program. Just as population growth shifted the football power from Brookwood/Parkview to Suwanee, I think growth may shift the power in another 5 years or so to Mill Creek/Dacula. It really is a question of whether they get the coaching staff to take advantage of the talent pool. Dacula is already starting to flex their muscles and these changes can happen almost overnight, just as champion football arrived suddenly at PTR, NG and Grayson.
