South Atlanta PF Nick Jacobs returns from UGA; Next recruiting trips are Florida, Clemson, Auburn and Alabama

South Atlanta power forward Nick Jacobs, who draws comparisons to his former teammate Derrick Favors, traveled to UGA over the weekend for his first official visit.

The 6-foot-9, 255-pound Jacobs is one of the nation’s top 100 high school basketball players and has narrowed down to UGA, Florida, Clemson, Alabama and Auburn.

“Nick said he had a real nice time up at Georgia,” South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick said. “Everything seemed to be positive. We only talked for a few minutes and he said he had a good time and enjoyed the visit.

“You can’t read too much into it it [though] because I’ve never heard a prospect say they had a bad official visit.”

Jacobs, who averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds last year at South Atlanta, had Georgia connections: Nick’s cousin is David Jacobs, who played defensive end for the Bulldogs and had his football career cut short in 2001 by a stroke.

The head coaches from four of his finalists, including UGA’s Mark Fox, observed Jacobs in voluntary workouts last week. Alabama coach Anthony Grant will travel to South Atlanta this week.

Jacobs will take this weekend off, and then take recruiting trips to Alabama (Oct. 2), Florida (Oct. 9), Clemson (Oct. 16) and Auburn (TBD).

Jacobs is reportedly leaning toward UGA and Clemson. “I’m not sure what Nick is thinking,” Reddick said. “I want to make sure he makes his own decision because it will be one that affects the rest of his life. I do my best to not influence him. [However], once he visits a few schools, we’ll sit down and compare some things.

“It’s just a matter of finding the best fit for Nick.”

How do Jacobs and Favors compare? Reddick says Favors was more athletic and agile at the same age, while Jacobs is bigger and stronger. Georgia Tech never recruited Jacobs, and Jacobs says he was not interested in the Yellow Jackets.

Fox is building a special program at UGA. Everything is positive. Jacobs would be a huge piece to the puzzle.

Jacobs wasn’t interested in Georgia Tech because he knew he couldn’t get in.

Michael – I’m curious, if Florida is Florida, if Clemson is Clemson, Alabama is Alabama, Auburn is Auburn, Georgia Tech is Georgia Tech then why is Georgia called UGA in your column? You AJC guys constantly refer to other schools by their names but when it comes to Georgia you love using a synonym.

Anybody know if Mark Fox can coach a football team? Georgia is needing a good coach because they sure as hell don’t have one.

Nick Jacobs has been leaning for Clemson for almost two months now. His offical visit to Clemson will be during their Midnight Madness called Rock the ‘John on Oct 15. Who will be attending UGA’s Midnight Madness???

@Captain, thanks for your question. Why do I write “UGA” instead of “Georgia?” To clarify the difference between the two. It can get confusing when you write about “one of Georgia’s top prospects” … which can mean the state of Georgia OR University of Georgia.
