It’s Week Four of HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. This week, AJC high schools beat writer Michael Carvell blogs live and takes your questions about high school football and related topics. Michael will be checking in from Greenville High, where he is following around Patriots coach Jeremy Williams, who has inspired many with his attitude toward the terminal illness of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

AT THE GAME: Michael Carvell just sent this picture of Greenville High coach Jeremy Williams from the sidelines:

Do you all even cover Creekside High School football games at all? Thay are undefeated with two players who are related to Eric Berry that are outstanding players, not to mention, their only freshmens.

I’m definitely not saying that North Paulding has the most to prove but they do have SOMETHING to prove. This being their first full year playing a AAAA region schedule, a lot of people including the AJC wrote them off. They have some great student-athletes up there and also some great coaches.

Meadowcreek at the Ridge. I just hope our players don’t overlook this one, we should focus on playing good football, and not the score, and hopefully our backups will be in in the beginning of the second half.

Sandy Creek would like to prove that last year was not just a fluke. If they could win the AAA title this year, that would go a long way in accomplishing that. Problem is we play in a weak region. There just are not that many good AAA teams geographically close to us. We’ve scheduled games against bigger schools like East Coweta and Whitewater. I wish we would schedule games against local powerhouses like LaGrange, Griffin, and Newnan.

I am almost ashamed to post on here since my Colquitt County Packers have played like a girls school this year. Colquitt has Warner Robins this Friday night in the Hog Pen. Hopefully the defense will show up. The offense has been great this year except for the goal line fumber against Thomas County Central in overtime. They will put up their 35 to 40 points, it is time for the defense to grow some hair on their chest and pop somebody in the mouth. Good luck to all the region 1AAAAA teams this weekend.

Coffee trojans — Jeff Heron won the title his 3rd or 4th year at Camden. He won a AAA title in 1999 up there near Athens his 3rd or 4th year there too. Lowndes Randy McPherson won the state title his 3rd AND 4th years at Lowndes. It doesn’t look like your Coffee coach has your team in line to do that anytime soon. In fact your team is not as good as it was 2 years ago It seems to get worse each year. I’m afraid my friend you guys need to make a change. Tifton may have to also. Coffee used to play really hard nosed smack’em in the mouth football. Hope you get it back soon!

Black&Gold24, Colquitt will be pretty good by playoff time, and will probably be the 3rd place team in our region, meaning you’ll go up to Atlanta and beat one of their teams again like you usually do. I personally think ya’ll will stack up well against Valdosta this year. Ya’ll always seem to have their number. Who knows Colquitt could win the region if it starts playing good football.

AVikingFan,
We do start slow, and have done so for years. It drives me crazy though. I think we match up well against everybody in the region fairly well except for the Vikes, those running backs you guys have will have a field day with our young defense. I agree we will make the playoffs and beat some of those Atlanta teams, but we do not have the team to win a state championship.

Quinn, what I really hope is that nobody gets hurt in the PTR v Meadowcreek game. Subs should be in after the first quarter. Meadowcreek is just a festering boil on the rear of the Gwinnett County Board of Education. Decent kids. Decent athletes. That the county has quietly pushed aside and forgotten.

Duluth v Norcross could turn out to be an interesting game. Duluth has a whole new attitude after picking up their head coach from MLK. They also picked up a couple of key players. Norcross has a competitive team this year, and this game will test whether Duluth may be a factor in the next few years, or whether the 3 “L”s in Duluth Football really do stand for ______ Hopefully, Duluth is bringing more than a great band and fantastic fine arts department for a couple of years.

More fun under the Friday Night Lights. What a perfect evening for football in Georgia.

Haiku-575… I haven’t seen Griffin play this season except for the scrimmage they had with East Coweta. I would be willing to bet that Griffin, Whitewater, and Starrs Mill all make the playoffs out of there region. The fourth team is a toss up. In other news Sandy Creek wins big again tonight against Drew.

@Suwanee 0wnz : I was a junior at NG when Meadowcreek opened. I went to the tech center school with several folks from there and they always liked it, since it was so new and all. What happened there to make it become as neglected as it is by the BOE?

You have to hand it to those kids though, they get out there and try, even though it would have to be disheartening to lose so much. I wonder if they don’t need a coach like Doc Davis out of Spartanburg HIgh School in SC. He took over a program in my moms town that was something like 5-50 over several years and within 2 years, he had them vying for the state championship. He changed the whole work ethic, got more weight training involved, and really turned that program around.

Most years Coffee is average…should have won state when Pulpwood was there. They were undefeated and faced Valdosta in the playoffs at home. With Coffee ahead and the ball being punted to them with about 1 1/2 minutes left all they had to do was receive the kick and call for a fair catch – then take a knee three times- but as I understand their head coach told Pulpwood to not call a fair catch but to run with the ball. He tried to catch the ball on the run and it bounced off of his shoulder pads and rolled down inside the Coffee 15 yard line where Valdosta recovered and eventually scored to win. Coffee had more talent that year than any team in the state.

I am a fan of Hawkinsville’s RB Fabian Forest. He has run for well over 1,000 yards in each of his previous three seasons and now, as a senior, he has over 700+ yards in his 1st three games. Fortunately, Hawkinsville has moved out of the toughest class A region in the state, which includes Charlton, Clinch and Wilcox (all rated in the top 4 the last time I looked) Hawkinsville won state in back to back years in the early 2000’s and right now they are rated by AJC as #10. This friday they play another undefeated but unranked team in Marion County on the road. I wish them luck.
