It is shaping up to be UGA vs. Georgia Tech for Milton High power forward Julian Royal, who is ranked as one of the nation’s top 100 college basketball prospects.

Royal will take his first official visit to UGA on Friday. He is also scheduled to take recruiting trips to Georgia Tech on Oct. 1 and Wake Forest on Oct. 8.

“As a parent, if Julian chose between Georgia and Georgia Tech, I’d win,” said his father, Charles Royal. “We have three official visits and that’s all we’re going to take unless something crazy happens.”

The 6-foot-9 Royal led Milton High to the state championship in Georgia’s largest classification, averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds. He had around 40 scholarship offers by the end of his junior season.

UGA and Georgia Tech recruit the same players all the time. However, it’s not often that both schools are among the 2-3 finalists for a prospect.

What is working in Georgia’s favor? “What’s not to like about [UGA coach] Mark Fox? I think he has done the program justice since he has been there,” the elder Royal said. “We’ve been fortunate to be there for a few games last year. He’s got those guys thinking about winning. The facilities are impressive.”

Georgia Tech? “Those guys have been on us for quite a time. We have an old picture of Julian with [Georgia Tech coach] Paul Hewitt when he was 10 or 11 years old. Julian had a pot belly and was significantly shorter, looking nothing like he does now. Georgia Tech has a great reputation and plays in the tough ACC.”

Royal said that his family has purposely taken a slow pace with recruiting process, making sure his son has all the information and experiences needed to make the best decision. ”I just want him to take his time and really think what it would be like attending each of these schools. This is a relationship that he is going to work on for the next four years.”

Two other Milton seniors have revealed their college decisions — with Shannon Scott committed to Ohio State and Jordan Loyd headed to Furman. Guard Dai-Jon Parker is considering multiple offers, including both Georgia and Georgia Tech.

Can’t wait to Julian lined up with Caldwell, Marshall and hopefully Parker. The program is headed on the way up! Good Luck with your decision, but I hope it leads you to wearing red & black. GO DAWGS!

His daddy said – “This is a relationship that he is going to work on for the next four years.”

Please! He is going to be a one and done. Doesn’t matter who gets him.

GT has a very solid group of basketball players on the roster, a solid head coach who will not be going anywhere else for a long long time and GT also offeers an absolutely superb college education. GT has a significant number of players in the NBA and most (maybe even all) of Coach Paul Hewitt’s former players speak highly of the positive personal relationship they have with Hewitt in addition to the typical coaching relationship. Many of the players stay in touch with the GT program and visit the team on a regular basis.

I would think Julian and his parents would consider all of these facts and jump at the chance to sign with GT……..I am sure they will make the best decision for Julian.

Good luck to him regardless of where he decides to play ball and attend college; I sincerely hope he enjoys the experience and makes the best of this extraordinary opportunity.

When you see players who stay at UGA rather than go into the NBA Draft, you see what a special team Fox is building in Athens. Name me one other school who had two players turn down the NBA to see what CMF could do for them with another year. Unless you are going to be an Engineer I can’t see why a player would choose to go to GT. Both schools have great coaches, but only one is in a great college town, only one has the major of your choice, only one is recognized by national publications as having a great sports scene, only one really stands out. . .

This young man has narrowed his choices to 3 great universities……can’t go wrong with any of them. With that said, I hope he chooses UGA.

Tech does have a head coach who is not going anywhere for a long time. And when he does go, old Paul will be hauling a boat load of money with him.

I love GT but can’t stand Paul DA Hewitt. GT grad is wrong, most of PH players are one and done. Fire Paul Hewitt and get a respectable coach. The DA that gave that stupid 7 million contract show have been fired before he died.
Inspite of JH— Julian we would still like to have you .

gt grad your a nitwit an dont know wtf ur talkin about.

1. gt graduation rate is last in the acc. so much for academics. the only guys who graduate are the white guys phew doesn recruit.

2. one would think that a coach who sacrifices academics for one n done short fixes would finish near the top of the conf year in an year out. surprise surprise surprise. phew has pushed the gt program towards the bottom tier in the acc.

3. all the nba scouts think that gt players have terrible fundamentals. ask don nelson and the new jersey nets for instance or philly. if phew is such a great teacher than he would be in the nba as an assistant. other than st johns phew hasnt had a nibble or even made a short list in over 6 years. phew is the inventor of the clogged toilet offense for chris sakes.

phew is a tall black man who talks smooth and looks good in a suit. that is the sum total of his talent.

take away his blackness and he is a never was. a perennial assistant coach at some jr college. the only reason he has this job at gt is because he is the poster child for black coaches who cant coach.

i find it amazing that you would say he has a great repore with his past players and they with gt.

all of his star players were mostly one n dones. gt was no more that a hotel to them …. hence phew’s nic hotel hewitt. the only past players i see at our games are cremins players … not phew’s.

of course that is part of phew’s problem. bobby harped on chemistry. phew harped on getting to the nba.

phew is the quintessential ‘me before team coach’. look no further than our current starting point guard as a great example of what phew is all about. we sacrificed wins an losses just so he could get a cup of coffee in the nba.

phew sacrifices wins an losses and team spirit so that his one n dones can make it to the nba.

what a turd this guy is. what a turd!

Wake Forest is a great school with a great BB tradition. The college experience is nowhere greater than at Wake. Wake epitomizes “class”.

Well Julian, if you want to play on TV alot, in the nations premier basketball conference and get a top notch education then Wake and GT are great choices.

Clearly he’ll choose tech unless he thinks he can’t get on the floor with guys like Holsley, MOrris, Hicks, and whoever the Jackets bring in 2011 to compete with.

Otherwise, he’ll go to UGA, who’s assembled a nice group of young guys (thornton is solid, but similarly would have gone to GT if ACC rules allowed it, and caldwell is a stud but is a one and done guard) but let’s face it UGA is still a second tier team in a conference that is practically a mid major in basketball, while tech (despite CPH’s struggles) shuffles players to the NBA every year from the country’s best conference.

Remember, Atlanta — this is basketball, not football.

@Remarkable, look at Duke… Smith and Singler could have gone. Either way, UGA is a great fit for Royal. He can be like Trey Thompkins

It amazes me what perceptions and not reality some of you Tech fans keep saying about UGA’s basketball program: people will not care about it. I graduated from UGA when Hugh Durham was there. Once UGA started winning with Hugh, the games had sellouts. Even as corrupt as Harrick was, when UGA started winning, people came to watch the game. It’s all about winning. GT could still lose and people would come watch basketball not because of GT but because they like watching ACC teams within the conference. So get over yourself.

Tech doesn’t do well playing in the ACC with local players. They are not disciplined and skilled as out of state players. We had a Georgia player of the year last year that shot about 50% of his foul shots, local guards always seem confused. I think that is one of the reasons Tech has digressed since Cremins left. The team that made it to the NCAA finals was a Cremins team. Some coaches can teach these skill sets at the college level, Tech can’t they have to recruit ready made players. Check the resumes of the Tech assistant coaches and compare them to other assistant coaches in the ACC. Unlike football we cannot or won’t recruit attractive assistant coaches, there are mid level schools getting better assistant coaches than we have.

Gt or Georgia…that is a no brainer. UGA has bested GT on the hardwoods over the last decade and Fox is CERTAINLY a better coach than Hewitt. Hewitt is probably the worst bench coach in America and has done less with more than anybody in the history of college hoops!!! Georgia is on the rise and should be this prepster’s choice!!

August 31st, 2010

The problem with GT is not the heritage or the school, it is the coach. Hewitt will not coach up anyone.

I think GT renovation of Alexander Memorial over the next few years is going to hurt recruitting as these kids will really have no “home” to play at. If he wants to play in the NBA…and get a great education GT is the place…but I like Fox over Hewitt…hate to say it.

Cremins harped on chemistry? Maybe back in the Mark Price days but times changed. The one and done at Ga Tech started under Cremins and remember he actually forced players to transfer to make room for Dion Glover. Still a great coach though. Hewitt is OK. I feel he has had teams that could have done more. He also has had a lot of early entries but is that necessarily his fault? If he doesn’t recruit Bosh, and Favors someone else will? Ask Boeheim if he regrets recruiting Carmelo. Someone alluded to players skipping the NBA to come back to UGA because of Fox and it’s some great college town. Please, it’s because there draft prospects weren’t that high. If that were projected to go Top 3 they would have been out of there too. And please name a GT player’s lack fundamentals? Half of the NBA lacks fundamentals. Get a grip.

For anyone that thinks Julian is a one and done than you don’t know High School basketball. Julian is a VERY good player, but by no means is he capable of being a “one and done”. Two former Georgia stars from Wheeler(Charles Howell, NC State, and Ari Stewart, Wake) played 15-20 minutes a game last year and averaged under 10 pts. Julian will be simalar to them.

we forced bobby out over 3 mediocre years as compared to 14 good years.

in retrospect comparing bc vs phew i take bc every time still.

phew in 10 years has gone to the ncaa like 5-6 times at most. never won the acc in any fashion. has finished dead last once recently and phew has positioned our program as a bottom 1/3 tier team.

in 19 years at gt bc went to the nit/ncaa 14 years. one year when we were slighted by the ncaa we turned down an nit bit …. 15 of 19 years in a tourney wtih bobby.

won the acc twice.
won the tourney once or twice
finished 2nd once
finished 3d once
(under phew we have never finished in the top 1/3)

we went to the big dance 10 years in a row with bobby.

bobby did his damage when the ncaa selected less teams and the acc was only 9 deep. the coaches that bobby coached against are hands down better than the watered down 12 team league we now have.

bobby’s philosophy unlike phew’s is to play as tough a schedule as he could. this years schedule is an embarrassment.

bobby’s philosophy was to play as a team. chemistry was tantamount to bc play. phew……. he likes that ‘individual one on one instruction’. selfish anyone? how is that working for him. hey phew there is no I in team.

i followed bc for 19 years religiously….. there was not a single year that went by when bobby would not be quoted as saying…. ‘ i didnt get any sleep last nite because i was worried about our team’s chemisty. ‘ meamwhile i have never heard phew ever mention chemistry. EVER.

as far as pushing players out. surely you jest. all teams lose players. i havent looked at the numbers but ill bet that we lost less players under bc in 19 years than we have under phew in 10. matter of fact we have not had a full roster under phew for the most part in the last 6 years. your comment is bogus.

noneya …. your clueless.

if i was to write a single excerpt comparing the two coaches it would be….

bobby built our program from scratch and took it to national prominence. phew took a nationally prominent team an has made it a irrelevant.

when bobby left he was beloved by all. he is STILL beloved. he will prob be a hall of fame coach. he donated millions to gt when he was here.

phew is probably the most hated coach at gt since bill lewis. phew has given nothing back to gt at all. nothing at all. i take that back. before phew started losing his popularity with the students he bought pizza for those students waiting in line for tickets a few times. a regular last of the big spenders paul is.
