It is shaping up to be UGA vs. Georgia Tech for Milton High power forward Julian Royal, who is ranked as one of the nation’s top 100 college basketball prospects.

Royal will take his first official visit to UGA on Friday. He is also scheduled to take recruiting trips to Georgia Tech on Oct. 1 and Wake Forest on Oct. 8.

“As a parent, if Julian chose between Georgia and Georgia Tech, I’d win,” said his father, Charles Royal. “We have three official visits and that’s all we’re going to take unless something crazy happens.”

The 6-foot-9 Royal led Milton High to the state championship in Georgia’s largest classification, averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds. He had around 40 scholarship offers by the end of his junior season.

UGA and Georgia Tech recruit the same players all the time. However, it’s not often that both schools are among the 2-3 finalists for a prospect.

What is working in Georgia’s favor? “What’s not to like about [UGA coach] Mark Fox? I think he has done the program justice since he has been there,” the elder Royal said. “We’ve been fortunate to be there for a few games last year. He’s got those guys thinking about winning. The facilities are impressive.”

Georgia Tech? “Those guys have been on us for quite a time. We have an old picture of Julian with [Georgia Tech coach] Paul Hewitt when he was 10 or 11 years old. Julian had a pot belly and was significantly shorter, looking nothing like he does now. Georgia Tech has a great reputation and plays in the tough ACC.”

Royal said that his family has purposely taken a slow pace with recruiting process, making sure his son has all the information and experiences needed to make the best decision. ”I just want him to take his time and really think what it would be like attending each of these schools. This is a relationship that he is going to work on for the next four years.”

Two other Milton seniors have revealed their college decisions — with Shannon Scott committed to Ohio State and Jordan Loyd headed to Furman. Guard Dai-Jon Parker is considering multiple offers, including both Georgia and Georgia Tech.

Hey, Dumb Dave, Fox had several players from Nevada go to the NBA, including a lottery pick. Fox won consistantly at Nevada, going to the NCAA tournament and to the Sweet Sixteen at least once.

Do some homework before you show your ignorance.

GT is the gateway to NBA and millions of dollars, the ACC is where top talent goes to compete. thGA has a good coach for now, but with all the arrests and NCAA being on campus, he will upgrade out of athens quickly.

He won at Nevada and to a thUGA fan that is the same as winning in the ACC. LOL! He had one lottery pick (Snyder) and another top recruit (Fazekas) who actually got worse at Nevada, so don’t give the coach too much credit.

Maybe in your rush to type something you thought was so profound you missed this line about Cremins in my post; “Still a great coach though. Hewitt is OK.” Breathe, relax.

Why is it the higher up’s in GTU land wanted Hewitt to take the St. Johns job? Paul Hewitt and Sidney Blowes are the two worst coaches in the ACC. Both can recruit, no doubt, but just down right pathetic basketball coaches.

Mark Fox: 5-11 in the crappy SEC, no postseason with two future NBA players.

Yes…a truly special coach. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

One thing is for sure, You can’t talk GT Sports without the Sorry Coach Paul Hewitt being the top conversation. Every news are blog dealing with GT… Paul Bewitt becomes the top story. Rads needs to get some Ba!!s and fire Paul Bewitt and get a Coach of Character and respect. Hewitt is a disgrace to the program, fans ,school, & State. Get the 7 million and put his A@@ on the road .
Paul Bewitt is a joke!
I wouldn’t let my dog play with PH much less my son…

I have not seen the UGA fan base this excited about basketball since Tubby took us to the NCAAs & almost to the Great 8. It is great to have two good programs in state and see our Georgia players stay in-state. I would love to see him play in Athens and honestly think UGA is the program on the rise – not just in the state but in the nation. Two years from now, he would be happy he enrolled in Athens.

By the way, the SEC East is better than the top half of the ACC from 1-6, although I’ll give Duke a solid #1 over Kentucky, but that’s it.

Paul Blewitt does less with more than any other coach in America.
