Peach County jumps Sandy Creek to No. 1

First, let’s say there’s no shame in beating Whitewater in close game. Whitewater believes it has its most talented team yet this year. But Sandy Creek-Peach County was nearly a toss-up for the No. 1 ranking in preseason, and a 20-0 victory over Warner Robins is pretty convincing. So let’s put Peach County at No. 1. …

In other news, Georgia swept Alabama in the North Gwinnett double-header, with North Gwinnett and Grayson winning. Also note that Carrollton routed a pretty good Alabama team in Oxford. Eagle’s Landing Christian blew out Florida state champion North Florida Christian.

If not for South Panola hanging 65 points on Colquitt County, we’d have a full round of Georgia football breast-beating today.

I’m eager to see North Gwinnett vs. Crenshaw (Calif.) and Camden County vs. Central Miami (#2 team in USA Today) this week.

Here’s a wrapup of the changes in the rankings this week:

AAAAA – Collins Hill beat Roswell and took Roswell’s place in the Top 10.
AAAA – North Clayton back in, Warner Robins out.
AAA – Peach County jumps Sandy Creek. Carrollton and Ridgeland replace Washington County and Gainesville. St Pius drops five spots.
AA – Callaway replaces Hart County, which tied Franklin County in a lightning-shortened game.
A – Darlington and Holy Innocents’ replace Bowdon and Greenville.

Good point AVikingFan in terms of the Cats leaving those timeouts on the board and simply quitting on the fans last year. I also agree with you how fortunate we were with Tomberlin making it possible for our players to win those stronger, bigger, and faster awards. My opinion of Tomberlin is that his coaching skills ended in the weight room unfortunately for us. I do believe that our current head coach will prove to be Valdosta’s best hire. For some reason, I have total confidence in Gillespie as the guy who will take us back to the “promise land”. My suggestion to you viking fans is that you alll should stop looking in your rearview mirror so much because you alll could quite possibly end up in a terrible collision that will favor the Cats this year. Just saying……

Camden is the only team in 2-AAAAA that even qualifies for the classification. Everyone else is playing up. Camden has 2800 students while the next closest is 1000 short. I think that’s Bradwell, but I’d have to check.

Benedictine is considered a region football mate of Camden’s despite an ADA of 630. And with Benedictine that means that actually have 315 students since single-sex schools’ numbers are multiplied by two.

It’s a shame that there are no similarly sized opponents near Camden, but it’s also a shame the GHSA allows the Savannah schools to play up to this level. I think most of them would fit into AAA. They are competitive in basketball, but it’s rare that a school can be competitive at their size in football. And it’s quite evidence by the annual pastings the schools get, especially by Camden. What’s scary is that four of the teams in the region qualify for state.

That said, the GHSA has allowed massive travel in the past for region games (and I think they still waive the travel rule for region contests). Valdosta’s first foray in AAA saw them region mates with R.E. Lee of Thomaston. My alma mater, which is one county up from Valdosta, has spent various years as region mates with McIntosh County Academy, Camden, Brantley County, Charlton County, Randolph-Clay, Early County, Northside (Warner Robins), and Dudley Hughes of Macon.

If Camden wants to continue to have only a single public high school in the county, they need to face some repercussions as the GHSA needs to tell Chatham’s schools to cut it out and play at a level they can be competitive.

HeadEast / RealisticEPFan:

I agree, everything I have saw seems to say that Grayson beat themselves and an earlier post says Grayson played the game WITHOUT their starting QB who is now back…Regardless KELL will be pumped and playing EAST at their home field will give them added incentive…

BUT not to get too far ahead…Paulding County this week, then Douglas County in “THE BONEYARD”…

I spoke to the North Paulding booster club folks a few days ago and they are EXCITED about this being the first year to be playoff eligible…you are right that they are building a very competitive program up there…should make for some fun in county rivalry!!!!

I still see East biggest hurdle being the Hiram game!!!…That should have a HUGE crowd in “THE BONEYARD” especially should both teams still be undefeated at that point…

Dosta fan – I’ve been on here for about a month now talking about how good Valdosta is going to be this year, before any Cat backers spoke up. My gosh with 35 seniors who’ve been thru that weight training ought to be good.

We are playing McEachern and Tallahassee Leon this year, so that kinda evens our schedule up with Valdosta’s. And we played a very good South Gwinnett. Still if we happen to score first against ya’ll those 35 seniors who took that 57-15 butt whupping last year are gonna bow their heads and say here it comes again. I have been predicting a 3-way tie in our region for this year. That still looks good to me. (Our region tie breaker system is points allowed among playoff teams.) But what we are conmcerned about right now is that long trip to Powder Springs this coming Friday in Holiday weekend traffic to play what appears to be is a very good McEachern team.

Eagleforlife,,I have rooted against teams when they have beaten my team before, but that was against another instate team. But I have never in all my life rooted for a homestate team to loose to and out of state team. The more the highschool teams from Georgia win the better it is for our state. But thats your god given right. Go North Gwinnett this week, we at Camden is rooting for you, if you win it only make our football in the state look better. I guess thats why a lot of people dislike Northside football, because its just the pure arrogance. You guys think your better than you really are. Our guys are young as of game time experience, but I truly believe they can win this game. Thats why its played on the field…9 of the 11 starters on defense are juniors and sophmores, so they can’t do nothing but get better.

Cannon I’m right here man. Just been a little bit busy. Great game this past Friday. EP’s defense allowed just 44 total yards against South Paulding, while gaining 326 against the South Paulding Defense. EP this year has a stable of backs who can get the job done no matter which one is in the game. The O-line needs a little work, but they eventually get it done later in the games. The QB for EP is a gamer, he has a strong arm is is pretty dang accurate, very smart also. The WR’s for EP aren’t your streaking downt he field type but they can catch and they run pretty darn good routes. Now for the defense. I’ve seen a few comments on here about EP’s defense not being all that. Well they did only allow south paulding to gain a total of 44 yards and they pitched a shut out, had a goal line stand, and they stopped a 3rd and inches conversion as well. The Front 4 on that D-line are very strong and quick, they are always in the backfield and making plays, Linebackers fill the gaps great, and protect the middle of the field. The Corners and safeties I do agree need to work a bit on not getting out of position against the pass, Our Safeties will just flat out come up and knock your socks off enough said there. Against Chapel Hill EP’s defense allowed that one TD early with Chapel hill slinging it down the field as much as they do. Then the Raider defense shut them down. Don’t say Chapel Hill doesnt’ have good WR’s because they do, They have two that are about 6′4 or 6′5 that can catch. Their QB can throw the ball as well, he just might be a bit on the short side. This is the best Team EP has had in a bout 2 years, they are very similar to the 2006 team.

valdosta has 96 players on this years roster.30 seniors,29 juniors and 37 sophmores.if our team was in such great shape, why did all the players get gassed last year in almost every game by the 4th quarter?our players off last years team will tell you new dc rodenmaker’s weight room regimen makes tomberlin’s pre-school.add in gillespies speed and agility drills, they say looking back now, they where in poor fb shape.its not the team or fans fault the previous coach didnt use all his time outs or only had 5 plays out of 3 different sets.i can assure you gillespie is the real deal.this is one coach who has more play book than any coach i’ve been around since wright bazemore.

@kb and dosta fan — i dont believe that the guy that the guy kb posted back to is a lowndes fan simply because us lowndes fans dont usually get on here saying we are the best, i think the point AVikingFan was trying to make was that we would all benefit if we had more games like the one we had in 2000 where both teams battles to the bitter end and left it all on the field, i was at that game and it was personally the best high school football game ive ever seen it was a shame that either team had to lose but the real winner was the fans.

@go pack go — you need to take those stats to your coach the boosters and the fans need to kick his door in take the throne that you gave him to sit on and give him a stool until he gets your boys prepared for the games better stop treating him like hes the second coming.

Wildcat Fan……….I don’t feel that it is arrogance on the part of Eagleforlife ,it’s fact…The Eagle has been flying high for many years now , and with the calibre of the underclassmen coming up , many years to follow…….. I am an Eagle fan pulling for Camden against this squad from Florida, and I am not in the minority…….Camden will win , Florida schools recieve too much hype …… Booker T Washington against the Eagles a couple seasons back tucked tails by the 2nd qrt when introduced to GA smash mouth Football………I thought with Camden’s back to back championship seasons , defeating N.G ,Northside , Pridge , Newnan , Lowndes , Colquitt, AAAAA’s best over the last two season’s , the issue with Camdens weak region schedule would be finally put to rest……I saw the Cats in 2008 and 2009 , I was convinced that if you guys were in Region-1 AAAAA both seasons , the Cats would have been region champs both seasons………That 2008 2nd rounder was one of the best High school football games ive seen , If you were there ,you know at the onset of the 4th it was any teams game…Herron out did Nix in the 4th ,and he and the Cat kids impressed a bunch of Eagle fans in the process……… A lot of people in the wartown know good football . Camden , Lowndes , Tucker, Pridge ,Peach, Carver and others are respected programs here……..I really wouldn’t sweat all the negative comments about Camden , because any true football person would know that Camden is a well coached team.

At this point, I will give Lowndes the edge..they have athletic receivers and a solid RB coming out of their ears, but the QB is average at best….Valdosta has a questionable QB as well, which will really matter for a deep run. I think both programs are playing fairly decent non-region schedules with Florida, Alabama teams which will help them this year because Region15A is down a bit. Camden gets to ride easy on the region play, so why shouldn’t we for a change.

Camden County Situation Solved

Since there aren’t other AAAAA schools in southeast Georgia for Camden County to play then why not divide Camden into two schools and play at the AA level. Gwinnett County schools are constantly sliced-n-diced into additional schools. Would put an end to the $%^&* that Camden gets away with while playing in a AA region.

If Miami Central thinks they are going to come to Kingston and plant a Florida flag, then they are going to be very unhappy with the results. It will be very tough for Camden to win both of these games against Florida teams. Camden is probably going to win at least one of those games due to sound preparation, size, speed, and outstanding coaching. But even if Camden loses both games they will learn some tough lessons that will only make them even tougher opponents in the GA playoffs. Go Camden!

I really like the progress being made by the program at Colllins Hill. I am not saying they will win their division, or even come in second, but they will make the playoffs, and they are going to put the smackdown on whoever they play in the first round.

I cannot even begin to imagine why Gainesville accepted a game against their relatively close neighbor Buford. All they could do is lose in that situatioln. If they win, it was expected because they are in a higher division, but if they lose it gives Buford a real edge in the “recruiting game” played by both teams as they raid players from neighboring public school districts. Buford is exactly the sort of lower division “tough team” who could beat almost anybody in the state on any given Friday. Here is a hint for all the armchair handicappers, “never bet against Buford”. This game was almost as stupid as South G going into the Cow Palace to play Lowndes.

Lowndes will get their only test of the season as they finally leave the comfort of their home stadium to play a real team at McEachern. What an awesome game that is going to be!

Mr. Carvel posted North as 1 – 0 because results from their Saturday beatdown against Bob Jones (AL) was reported later to GHSA who did not post the result to their site until after Carvel posted his rankings. AJC has subsequently updated the North record to 2 – 0, and their scrimmage win against Grayson simply does not count. Some North players have openly questioned why any player at Crenshaw would accept the nickname “Black Mamba” (an extremely poisonous snake). After looking at film of this one man wrecking crew on both sides of the ball, everyone agrees he can call himself whatever he wants. While North will probably lose this game, they will be a tougher opponent for the rest of the season. I doubt that North will be the pushover that Crenshaw expects.

Several teams will probably pay for Colquitt’s loss last weekend. The team already had talent and great coaching. Now they have character.

We are in for some very exciting football in the next few weeks. You just gotta love HS football in this state!

Just fyi, the North Gwinnett-Crenshaw game will be televised by ESPNU, not ESPN.

Also, Class AAAAA in Georgia is not the top 20 percent any more. It’s all schools with 1,900 or more students. Class A is all schools at 525 or below. The middle three are divided equally. Using the 1900 borderline, Class AAAAA is now only about the top 15 percent, maybe a little less. I’d argue that the top 20 in AAAA is about as good as AAAAA now simply because there are so many more teams in AAAA (roughly 90 vs. 60 in AAAAA).

Roswell will be very competitive in its region but will struggle to score points this year. Very good defensively but on offense the wr position is really down as the 3 starters against Collins Hill were a non-threat the entire game. I know its only high school, but it was painful to watch especially after last year when they had 3 D1 level wr’s. This week against Ptree Ridge will have to be a low scoring game for Roswell to have any chance to pull the upset.
