Paging Chip Saye: You must not have known about Newton, or you thought David Pollack still played for Shiloh. When you picked Shiloh over the Rams( on the road no less) I thought you were just slacking on your Sat. picks. Anywho, didn’t think Shiloh was going to test us anyway so I aint going to brag on that. The defense once again looks pretty stout. This weeks tilt over at Eastside should be a classic smashmouth affair, as the Eagles will be looking to atone for the thrashing the Rams dished out last year before Eastside went ham. Can’t wait til Friday, what up Eastside.

I am sad to see da best region in high school football take a big slump this year. Tucker is the best team in the region by a long shot this year and its normally a big 3. Marist has dropped big time there secondary is horrible. Southwest Dekalb jus lost to much talent and they need time to get better. I happy mays and dunwoody have joined, Mays is the 2nd best team in the region this year and Marist, Southwest Dekalb and Dunwoody will fight for the last 2 playoff spots. This is a very sad sight. I hope Marist plays better than Southwest Dekalb did this week against Tucker.

As for the Stephenson fans, yall please don’t address these bandwagon riders on this blog anymore. Yall don’t have to defend your program; the results speak for themselves. Gartrell continues to put kids in college, and you guys continue to win 9+ games every year. So what you don’t have a ring; the last decade only saw Parkview, Camden Co. and Lowndes win it all in AAAAA. Yall take it one game at a time, and please DONT overlook Newton this year. I know its sandwiched between Luella and Langston Hughes, but guys be ready this year with NO EXCUSES WHEN WE WIN

trojan94 I personally know former Newnan coach Robert Herring very well and it happens to be that Carrollton coach Rayvan Teague is the one who no longer wanted to play us. Why do you think we started playing LG at the beginning of the season instead of yall? Plus LG is a tougher matchup anyways. Coincidence that yall stop playing us once we get goo?

Coincidence that yall stop playing us once we get good? I dont think so.We made it to the quarters 3 years ago and the semis the past two years in 5A. What have yall done in 3a? 1st and second round. So until youve got the facts or anything intelligent to say just shut your mouth because youre making Carrollton look bad and just plain dumb.

Newnancougar, I totally agree with your comments. The winningest program in AAA the last decade was LaGrange(3 championships). Why would we substitute a good team for a great team that Carrollton has never beaten. Carrollton caught Newnan at the right time when were changing to the spread offense and the 3-5-3 defense. They don’t want any part of us.

Great to hear that the Lakeside and Douglass football experts are writing off Marist — those guys really know what good football looks like. I sure hope Marist can come up with one more win this season.

@Joe — Tucker is the class of Region 6AAAA. I doubt Marist or anyone will be able to stay within 40 points of your team. All we can do is hope your team shows mercy on us next week. As for who will make the playoffs, not sure, but I won’t worry about overlooking Stone Mountain because they are not in AAAA anymore.

For all the talk about great teams, Dekalb teams still have a long way to go as far as state titles. There can be only one state champion and as a county that’s where we keep falling short. Yes and that includes Tucker which ueusally gets left out when discussing Dekalb teams with great talent but very few titles to show for it. Tucker seems to have the best shot this year. If you can get to the title game Tucker we will be pulling for you.

Stephenson gonna put up a good fight against Newnan… But we gonna make Newton regret taking that ride down 85… Newnan vs. Peachtree Ridge may be one of the biggest games in the state and one of the biggest in the southeast…

It is a very good sign for Stephenson to go in and beat Parkview at Parkview. Certainly Parkview is no longer the team they once were, but they are still going to play good team football, and they are no pushover. Everybody on this board knows how much talent there is at Stephenson, and somehow they always fall just a little short. This is a very good sign. Maybe this is the year for Dekalb football?
I was surprised to see Collins Hill beat Roswell. Collins Hill has a quality feeder program and they always have quality players, but I did not expect them to come together so quickly with a new head coach. They have a very tough schedule ahead of them with teams like Norcross, P Ridge, and North Gwinnett. The CH Eagles have made it very clear they are ready to play, and they are only going to get better as the season matures.
There are a ton of great games coming up but the 2 that really pique my interest next weekend are Camden vs Miami Central (FL) and North G vs Crenshaw (CA). Not only will the Georgia teams be individually tested against very tough nationally ranked opponents, but these games will give all of us a sense of how Georgia is progressing against top teams in two of the toughest football states.
Grayson and North did a good job putting the smackdown on Alabamastan this weekend, but next weekend Georgia is really looking down the throat of the lion.
On the surface, I would expect both Georgia teams to lose. But somehow I just have a gut feeling that superior coaching at Camden may pull out a victory. Having seen some film on Crenshaw, I just do not see how North can match the speed, size, athleticism, and coaching at Crenshaw.
Lots of great football coming up in Georgia. What a fun time of year! It is hard for me to understand how anyone can dis these teams with so many great athletes performing at such a high level for the fans. They are all winners, and Georgia fans are very fortunate to watch such exciting football.
Are you kidding me?

@War Eagle-Sounded like a legitimate scouting report to me. Neither of the bloggers from Lakeside or Douglass said their team was better than yours, nor did they even rank their teams. Everybody in the world realizes that the Marist faithful feel that they are the Holy Grail when it comes to football, but others may not share the feelings. One would think that saying your team has a possibility of finishing 4th and going to the play-offs isn’t writing Marist off. Your condescending remarks about Lakeside and Douglass fans not knowing what good football looks like could very well be the basis of the opine that Marist folks are arrogant. Good luck to your Eagles and don’t wear your heart on your sleeve unless you want opposing teams to think they have struck a nerve with accuracy. Lighten up, man. The season is young!

Quinn- My bad forgot about 2006. Terry- Newton is not at a point where they overlook anyone. They are building still, you know baby steps. Newnan essentially replaces Union Grove as a top 4 team in region 2, and are probably the team to beat. So with that being said; before you talk about what you are going to do to Newton, Im going to need you guys to take care of Peachtree Ridge and Woodstock first. My references to Stephenson are based on last year’s near miss against those guys, the defending region champs. As far as cupcakes go, compared to Newnan, its a cake walk I will admit. Good luck Newnan, best believe though in Newton Co. we are NEVER SCARED

I love watching good teams play football on friday nights. Its great to see new teams emerge and become champions. Going to Valdosta High School in the late 60’s early 70’s was great. It never got old winning. After all, that’s what every team trys to achieve when they go on the field. Being a Valdosta Wildcat fan was the best. We only lost one game througout my high school days. It seemed that was the way it was supposed to be. It’s called tradition and it spreads to everything. The Band, Cheerleaders and fans felt the pride and thats a good thing. The town really is winnersville, USA. They are all real champions in Valosta and it’s not just the winning, they also know how to loose, if only rarely. Now because I from there, I think I can explain why they haven’t won alot lately. This has to do with the way people were brought up in the south and maybe everywhere. Whites had there schools and churches and blacks had theres. When Valdosta intergrated the schools the positive was no fights like other schools because the main thing there was to win football games and that they did better than anytime in history. When there was an equal amount of blacks and whites on the field is when they played there best football. The best players got the positions and they played 1st string, 2nd string etc. I can’t explain it past that but history shows they were the best teams Valdosta ever produced. When Valdosta High School has a good ratio of black and white ball players on the team is when they will become unstoppable again. I would love to see no private schools and you would see a big change I believe in our football team. I said all this to say I think Valdosta will have a good football team this year but I wonder just how good it could be. Valdosta had great teams before intergration and so did Pinevale High, the all black high school. I was forunate enough to see Pinevale High win a state championship game in the mid sixtys. You know I cheered for Pinevale as if I went to school there, they were from my hometown. Valdosta will be state champions again and you better watch out, it might be this year. Good luck Valdosta your thing. Go Cats Win!!!!!

Newton Co. the past two years weve won 3 out of 4 home playoff games. We also have a 29 game regular season winning streak. Dont expect that number to stop growing anytime this season. We have only lost 4 games in the past three seasons and 1 in each of the past two so I dont think Newton Co really scares us too much. We beat much better Rams in the quarters last year.

Stephenson is GOOD TEAM!! The scary thing about them is that the season just started and they will gel and improve…They are not really hot yet and they havent reached their peak. I was at the Parkview game and although the turnovers hurt them, it was only the FIRST game of the season. I can’t see the jaguars making the same mistakes later on down the road as the season matures. Stephenson’s offense does need to gel more and the defense is as tough as nails now! I can’t see teams putting up too many points on that defense. Remember… ALL of Parkview’s points came off of the jags turnovers…their O could do NOTHING with Stephenson’s D. So although Stphenson played sloppy at times, if they don’t turn the ball over, Stephenson still would win 21-0! And even though Parkview is not a dominant program now their team is good. If Flowe gets things together they will be in the playoffs and possibly shock some teams…Also, i see good traits in this jaguar team… to go in the big orange jungle, fight being down, battle back in a hostile enviornment and get the win says A LOT!! Stephenson, in my opinion will be very battle tested and more prepared than previous years in my opinion. They played Parkview, they take on Cedar Grove, then go south to face Tift County.. Games Stephenson should win. After Tift they have a week off and get ready for region play with Westlake. When region play starts i expect Stephenson to have gotten all the kinks out and be off and rolling! This Stephenson team should be a well oiled machine by the time the playoffs start.

@ Are You Kidding Me Thanks, dude. I saw the Mays/Dunwoody and could give the same report on them, but nobody asked or seemed interested. I only called it like I saw it. Not the least bit critical, unless you count calling the one kid the coaches son–that is the only reason I could come up with that he would stay in the game and even be put on the other side of the ball. Calling it like I see it. Didn’t put names on here. The “Marist Faithful” or at least quite a few men in the stands had the same opinions. Yeah the team I support doesn’t rack up the wins every season, but so what? It’s a football blog, dude.

As Lee Corso would say….Not so fast my friend! Stephenson is a good team. No doubt about it.I like the Jaguars alot, but I am also a real. If the Jags continue to practice and hit in pads everyday Monday-Thurs play game on fridays, they will be hurt, beat up, and tired by the time playoffs start. Injuries are a big part of why Stephenson hasn’t gotten it done in the past. After the early by week, you are talking about 7 straight weeks of hitting plus playoffs in which if they do run the table now your talking 12 straight weeks plus practicing in pads? I am rooting for the Jags to finally win it all, but I also know the ball have to bounce your way, a little luck, mental preperation and mistake free football. STATE TITLE! BRING IT HOME

To AAAA Fan – I think you must attend games to scout for your team or you are one obsessed fan. While I have no problem with your “report” of the game, I don’t care for the tone. These are kids not professional football players afterall. #22 is the starting tail back. He is a sophmore and he has incredible speed. Yes he ran the opening kick off for a touchdown. After that, Douglas decided not to kick to him. You are not correct that he didn’t do anything after that. He had other big runs and along with the qb, the offense quickly put points up. The coaches decided to rest him early in the 2nd quarter when the game appeared to be in hand. #11 is a back-up back and did a fine job. He only carried the ball 2 -3 times all night and had great runs. #23 (a great kid by the way) who you felt the need to mock is a back-up who got playing time because the starter was out with a shoulder injury. The starter will be back for the Tucker game. While you can report what you think you saw, there is no need to mock these kids that are doing their best. That is the problem I have with your post. I would hope that adults can show maturity, respect, and sportsmanship that should be part of high school athletics. I presume you are an adult, perhaps a parent.
Marist may not have their strongest team this year. All teams have their ups and downs. But they will play hard and we will see how next week goes. Tucker always has a strong team and it will take a lot of strong play on Marist’s side to win. Good luck to your team.

And I also wanted to comment that the Douglas team had alot of speed and talent even if the are young and inconsistent. Maybe the Marist secondary was weak but I’ll give credit to the Douglas QB and receivers who showed great spped. They played hard and it was a near penelty free game.

As a a fan of the NG Bulldogs, I was embarrassed when Camden came in an rolled us last year. One thing I’ll say for Coach Sphire is he understands you’re not going to get better if you don’t challenge yourself…I like us playing Crenshaw. Whether we win or lose, that experience will only help us when it gets down to the business of GA football. Right now, the reality of AAAAA is if you want the hardware, you’re going to have to go through South GA to get it. It’s very early, but I see a much more balanced team on the field than last year’s Bulldogs. We have the makings of a legitimate running game, something I have not seen since I have been watching NG. If you can’t play in the rain, then it will be very hard get by a good team. I don’t care about national hype, because it doesn’t matter when you can’t get past the quarters….what I do care about is an opportunity at redemption. I think we have as good a shot as we’ll ever have this year to get to the dome. I’ve seen the Ridge and I see another real head banger for the region again (I don’t think anybody else has a real shot in 7-AAAAA). But what I really want to see again is the Wildcats; I don’t care where – I don’t think we could have played any worse. A lot of good football to be played between now and then…..next up, Crenshaw!
