‘GPB Sports Central’ to make TV debut on Wednesday night

Georgia Public Broadcasting, announcing that it has formed a new sports division, will debut “GPB Sports Central” Wednesday at 7:30 on Channel 8 and its HD channel.

Formerly named “Prep Sports Plus,” the show will cover breaking news stories, features, recruiting and polls from around the state. The show will replay Fridays at 11 p.m. with final high school football scores and Saturdays at noon with final scores and game news.

The show features veteran sports reporters Gil Tyree, Mark Harmon and Jon Nelson as well as newcomer and Atlanta Falcons Georgia Dome personality Niki Noto. Wednesday’s show includes: an exclusive report and highlight on the controversial ending to the Peachtree Ridge-McEachern game at Saturday’s Corky Kell Classic; the story behind the consecutive state championship runs being made by Class AAAAA Camden County and Class AA Buford; an interview with former Brookwood High School coach and athletics director Dave Hunter on the recent realignment of teams in the Georgia High School Association; a feature on volleyball powerhouse Pope and whether it can win back-to-back volleyball titles in a state very competitive when it comes to the dig; a Falcons minute with quarterback Matt Ryan, who talks about his favorite high school moment; and a fun exchange between brothers Keith and Kevin Maloof, whose teams played over the weekend.

The executive producer of show is Score Atlanta president I.J. Rosenberg, who also serves as the network’s sports director. The show is followed Wednesday night from 8-9 by Sports Central XL, a live video chat on GPB.org/sports featuring interviews with Georgia High School coaches mixing it up with bloggers, writers and fans. Tonight on XL will be North Gwinnett coach Bob Sphire, a Gwinnett doctor talking about the new concussion rule, South Georgia radio voice Tommy Palmer and Collins Hill coach Bruce Reach breaking down Friday night’s GPB/Score Atlanta Webcast of the week which features the Eagles hosting Roswell.

The last couple of years it seems like only comcast customers got to see great high school football coverage during regular season and that sucked if you did not have comcast. Now with gpb having this high school coverage on Wednesday and wsb covering games now on Friday nights more people can enjoy great high school football without having cable.

I hope that this program represents the entire state of Georgia and does not become a source for metro Atlanta high school football propoganda! It takes an act of God for these guys to load a crew and trave south of the I-75/I-20 interchange. Ironically, the overwhelming majority of the best teams in the state are far south of that point. I get the propoganda machine’s, aka Atlanta Journal-Constitution, assertion that the AJC is Atlanta’s paper. This is not the same for GPB. I am a little lost about GEORGIA PUBLIC BROADCASTING hyping programs that rarely win on the state’s biggest stage.
