New HS rankings and what Kell did Saturday

Just how much difference is there between the five classifications in Georgia high school football any more?

Cook (AA) beat Colquitt County, the preseason #5 in AAAAA. Fitzgerald blew away Tift in another Region 1-AA vs. 1-AAAAA game.

But for symbolism, there was a more significant upset:

Kell over Grayson, the #10 team in AAAAA.

It really wasn’t much of an upset as far as a surprise goes. Grayson suffered heavy graduation losses, and Kell was a AAAAAplayoff team in 2009 that returned an AJC Super 11 player in Brian Randolph.

But this is what’s significant: Kell is one of 54 schools that dropped in classification this year.

Several major programs – from Northside to Warner Robins to Carver to Dalton to Sandy Creek to Charlton County – moved down.

With less fanfare, several more solid programs also went down: Kell, Pope, East Paulding, Union Grove, Chapel Hill, Chattahoochee.

In doing preseason all-state teams for GHSF Daily last week, I noted that the AAAA all-star team would beat the AAAAA all-star team. AAAA has more major college prospects. It also has more teams – about 85 to 60.

IMO, AAAAA is still the best class, and the depth of AAAAA’s top 10 still will be a little better in the end than in AAAA. But the gap has shrunk.

Greetings AVikingFan,

I don’t know where JAYBO coaches. Bradwell only had a scrimmage against Liberty County last week. They open up their season opener at home against Region 2-AAAA Glynn Academy this Friday night. By the way, yes Colquitt County Fans are pretty quiet after what happened to them last week. But I believe that they will bounce back. Lowndes won a close one last week too. We can’t underestimate these teams. We have to take one game at a time, and not look ahead to the next game as if you are sure that you are going to win.

Wow that is a tough way to start season for Tucker. SWD followed by Marist. We should know a lot about Tucker as well as SWD and Marist after these games. 6AAAA is a very tough region.

Does anyone know what happened at the Lowndes-S. Gwinnett game. How did what seemed like a Lowndes rout turn into such a close game in the end. Did Lowndes keep starters in after the third quarter. Lowndes will definitely need starters the entire game against McEachern.

AVikingFan and HARDAWAY HEROES.
The 100 mile rule supposedly applies to all sports but is never enforced and there are definately exceptions for certain regions. A lot of the Savannah schools are just over 100 miles from Camden and all our sports teams play weekday games there (except football of course). I know for a fact that our wrestling team has gone over 100 miles for non-region matchups on Tuesdays or Wednesdays too.

Amazed,,, Why do you keep going on and on about one lone Victory. In the end what team raised the Trophy. Get over it DUDE. I would bet the house, that Grayson would give back that lone win, for the chance to raise that beautiful Trophy. So, Let go of Graysons JOCKSTRAP, Remeber this score CAMDEN 35 NG 0. Year in and year out the Trophy comes home to the south. You sound really foolish when you keep going on and on about a victory here and there, beat CAMDEN and Lowndes on a yearly basis and take that trophy back up North and then get on here and run your mouth. If you do those two things, that will shut the South up and then maybe you would not sound so foolish. I have never said anythying disrespectful about any school. I for one as many other Camden fans respect GWINNETT Co. football. We only respond to the negative post about our School. We get attacked more than any school ever, but we know why. When I was in Highschool it was this one kid that i just did not like. Now as an adult I know why, the kid was better than me at sports( I was pretty good myself)and his girlfriend was better looking than mine. Sounds like a fellow BLOGGER. Get my hint. You just sound foolish, I just state the very obviuos, when I say, Now at this point in time, footabll in AAAAA is better in the South, but I said the same during basketball reason, that the North is better than the South, its just the truth. Just beat Camden and Lowndes when you play them, until then STOP with the excuses. You may not like it, but Camden football is here to stay 8 Juniors and 1 sophmore on this years defense,(starters). Simple solution beat Camden when play them and STOPPPPPPPPPPPPP with the excuses. We beat Lowndes, Colquitt, and Northside, why do none of these people complain, why you ask, its called RESPECT. Winners respect!!!!!!! Losers complain????????

Lowndes, colquitt, Northside(twice), Newnan(twice), Valdosta ,North Gwinnett, PeachtreeRidge, Woodstock, Stephenson, Grayson, Brookwood, Dacula, Warner Robins, Tift, Newton, These are some of the teams Camden faced in the play-offs over the last few years. Very good record against them, my point none are from region 3AAAAA.

having watch this debate unfold for a couple of days now i figure i would chime in… as a grayson supporter i can respect what both camden and lowndes has done in the past 5 years. that being said during my 4 years at the school we played camden twice and lowndes once… we went 1-1 against camden and 1-0 against lowndes. to the guy who is saying that the only solution is to win i think grayson has done that. yes camden is the best team in the state right now yes lowndes is loaded year in and year out but does that take away from the pretty good ball teams that reside north of warner robins? Not by any stretch of the imagination. Now would grayson switch the win in the corky kell for a championship? of course but this is real life and they can still hang their hat on the fact that they were the only team in the state to beat the champs… as far as the weaker region goes it has to be region 3… I know you cant help your location but i would hope even camden fans can admit that anytime you outscore your opponents 274-0 in a 5 week span (see week 5-9) that it is indeed a LOUSY region.

Zack, let us compare Grayson 8-AAAAA and Camden 3-AAAAA for last season shall we:
8-AAAAA: Grayson- 8-0
S Gwin – 7-1 27-16
Dacula- 6-2 44-0
Brkwd- 5-3 22-12
PKVW- 4-4 33-37
Shiloh- 3-5 34-0
C Gwin- 2-6 42-3
Berk- 1-7 37-0
Mead- 0-8 56-0
Total: 36-36 295-68

Camden: 7-0
Win For- 6-1 39-6
Bradwell- 4-3 56-9
Jenkins- 4-3 50-0
Johnson- 3-4 51-0
Beach- 3-4 56-0
Groves- 1-6 76-0
Savan- 0-7 41-0
Total: 28-28 369-15

Playoffs:
Grayson: Marietta: 5-5 21-14
Roswell: 10-1 24-14
Newnan: 13-0 7-9 (L)

Camden: Newton: 6-4 43-19
Lowndes: 10-1 10-7
N Gwin: 12-0 35-0
Colquitt: 11-2 19-10
Northside: 13-1 31-3

It appears to me that Gray did not face competiton wekkend and week out. In fact their division faired as well as Camdens division. In fact Camden maintained the same level of play throughout the playoffs. The only games not included are the non region games. To show fair comparison here we go:

Grayson: 14-10 (Camden) 13-2
10-0 (Warner Robins) 6-4

Camden: 10-14 (Grayson) 12-1
30-24 ( First Coast, Jacksonville, Fl) 5-5
27-30 (Hoover, Al) 16-0 ( Region 6 6A State Champs)

Facts are facts. Playoffs present the same level of competition. Before we start talking about which region is weaker, let’s look at every regions level of competition. As you can see Graysons level of competition was the same as Camdens. Graysons scoring tailed off in the playoffs, while Camden scored at the same level of scoring as they did during the regular season. A lot of those blowouts by Camden was done by the 2nd, 3rd and 4th stringers. This method can be applied to any region to see who has the upper hand. Does this dimenish what Grayson did at the beginning of the year, no, does it dimenish what Camden did, no. It shows that all regions have the also rans, and that if you want to be the best in the region, then you have to play the game as it is presented to you. I beleive that the level of competition at all levels of high school football has increased tremendouly in Georgia, any team can beat any team on any given night. Nothing replaces hard work during the season and after the season. Any good program will run 12 months out of the year. That is what really separates good teams from the not so good teams. I can say that I have never seen the Savannah schools ever quit competing when they have played Camden or any other school. The level of talent is not there to compete week end and week out, but the effort is there. The other thing is Camden has a team concept not seen in most programs. You will never see them listed with the likes of some programs who have numerous DIV 1 players. That Coach there has the players and the community believing in the importance of team over individualism. Are there players on that team who are Div 1 prospects I am sure there are. Take a few good athletes and surround them with some good players and a system that suits the players you have and get the community to buy into the system and you will thrive, no atter where you are at. Let’s all get out and support the school programs as a whole. God Bless all of the athletes who will be strapping it on every friday and saturday this year. May they be injury free and show great sportsmanship this season.

Zack,, I have never implied teams North of Warner Robins, aren’t any good. NG, Grayson, PeachtreeRidge, are teams that I totally respect. I only respond to the attacks on Camden. I never once personally blogged anything bad about any school. I just point out the facts. We know our region is very weak at the best, I only say, is to look at our non-region schedule record and our playoff record. When we were having no success in the play-offs , losing in the first or second round every year, and had some very good teams(it is the coaching great coach now)no one cared, and now with a little success, everyone cares. We were losing because the level of competition and it didn’t get us ready for the play-offs, now those same fans are saying, we are winning because the level of competition, and it gets us ready for the play-offs. So which is it. Im one, praying that we don’t play Northy Gwinnett this year in the play-offs. 1 they’re a very good team 2 They want some revenge, and thats a deadly combination. WE know the region is weak, but shouldn’t we be judged by our play-off record some. At least say they play in a weak region, but they win in the play-offs as well. We never play region 3AAAAA in the play-offs, we had the toughest road to the Championship ever last year. Lowndes, Colquitt, Newton, North Gwinnett and Northside all were nationally ranked at the time(except newton). Outscored them 137-42 and 21 was in one game, our starters were out and that was the newton game. But do we get any credit for that run against those quality of teams, no only criticism. But we know why, we just go out and play and hope to win another one. And if your team happens to beat us and win the Championship, I will say congrats, and not criticize them.

Wardawg58. Nicely done on the posts! Grayson will take it’s lumps this year on offense till they get in the groove. In the Kell they had a QB playing with just one week of reps. Grayson’s starting QB will be back….then it will be game on. Last year I saw the game between Camden and Grayson. Camden had to figure out QB issue themselves. Once that was fixed they ruled the state. Grayson will be in the hunt late this year and hopefully can duplicate what Camden did last year. I would take a 2 or 3 loss year just to hold the championship trophy at the end. I think any team would.

Good luck to you in the coaching world Jaybo. Man your Thomas county Central Yellow jackets have one more fine DE. When ya’ll played Lowndes we had to have two players holding him by his shirt every play while a 3rd guy chopped block him. Once we got him down we had to get our 5′6″ 397 pound guy from the sumo wrestling team that we use in special situations to jump on him and hold him down. Yeah, we know in a real game we can’t play with 13 or 14 guys on the field. We tried it twice with S. Gwinnett playing 12 on kickoffs and got called for it. Imagine refs being able to count this early in the season!!!!!! But way down here in John Wayne, Johnny Cash, and John Deere Country we have to sometimes do those things. At least we get accused of it.

SouthGaRules _ You taking your laptop again Friday? I read your Friday night “during the game” posts Saturday morning. Good job!! I like the new thing with our band before games, marching from the school down the road in front of our tailgaters and stopping to play the Fight Song to’em! Kinda neat.

Good Luck Pebblebrook fans traveling down to Valdosta Friday. If you get here early enough, come around to the Lowndes side of the stadium and meet our tailgaters. My thing is if the North want to prove how good they are,why want they play some teams from the south that have good teams not the ones close to atlanta but the ones from 75 south.Teams like Peach county Waco,Lowndes,Camden county,Thomas County Central just to name a few.Come own North get own our level down south.Every year its the same thing the south always has to prove how good we are because of how its sat up in the playoff. They need to have a better system because some time the number 1 team meets the the Number 2 team in the state meet each other in the second round of the playoff.i seen it happen with Peach and Lagrange a couple of years ago, that should not have happen that early but it was ok.This year AAA is loaded with good team, the Peach state has 4 teams in the top 10 and 3 of them are in the same region the same about AAAAA.All i got to say is that some team from the south will be in the dome this year !!!!

A few late comments …

Someone asks why Marist is always ranked no matter how many starters are lost. It’s because Marist almost always has a Top 10 team no matter how many starters are lost. Marist needs to do well to keep this benefit of the doubt alive next season, however.

Kell-North Clayton. Someone asked how NC could be dropped when they didn’t play. Here’s how it works: You make $50,000 a year and are ranked the No. 10 highest-paid guy in your office. Another guy just got a raise and you didn’t, and now you are No. 11. You’re still making $50,000. In other words, Kell got a raise.

As for who does the rankings, they are produced by Georgia High School Football Daily, which is produced by Todd Holcomb and Chip Saye. The AJC rankings since 1952 have been done by one person in consult with the rest of the AJC staff. The only difference now is that the ranker is not a staff member of the AJC, but someone designated by the AJC to coordinate them. One reason I think the AJC/GHSF Daily rankings are better than ever is the feedback we get on this blog. If we overlook a team or have bias, we’ll be called out publicly. Which doesn’t mean we’ll always agree with the feedback here, but it makes us think harder and consider more points than we would have.

To amazed…looks like we have a misunderstanding. There are two schools in Valdosta. Valdosta High School and Lowndes High School. I went to Lowndes and together they have 28 State Championships. If I was a Valdosta fan living in the past, what a past to live in. You were right about one thing in your post…Lowndes has passed Valdosta by in the last 11 years but one thing you don’t see on here are a bunch of Lowndes fans bashing them HaHa we are better than you. Like a bunch of little kids. You don’t see Lowndes bashing Camden or vise versa..you seem to come one here to attach two of the best teams in the State for basically no reason. Lowndes and Camden have been winning for more than a decade now. Seems to me that Grayson should focus less on bashing Lowndes and Camden and focus more on winning the 9 games you have facing you since you are unranked and have a losing record at the moment. If I were you I would worrry about making your team relevent. I do sincerely hope both our teams are lucky enough to make the playoffs. You say that Valdosta/ Lowndes are the boondocks.. if we are I love the boondocks and am proud to have lived here all my life where Friday nite High School football games is what we look forward to all year long. It makes for the team not to be in full game shape, fine tuning your offense with only a half of play from your starters. You got to have talent to win, because you can fine tune your team all year, but if the team has no talent it would not make a difference the better team comes out on top most of the time. Its difficult to keep those guys in game shape when they play less than a half of every game and then ask them to play full games in the play-offs. But I would admit that it gives our younger players game time experience, but he plays those same kids in critical times also. I think it hurts for no team to push you in the regular season because in the play-offs if a team comes out and drive the ball down your throat on the first series then comes back and knock you in the mouth on defense, and you haven’t experience that it could be trouble. A year ago we had Norhtside by 2 touchdowns, they came back to take the led, I believe our kids was tired, then after they got their legs back under them, they came back to score two quick touchdowns. Thats was the first game that year, were the starters had to play an entire game and that was game 12(second round of the playoffs). It has positives not as much as you may think, but it comes with a lot of negatives also. The same thing happen to us against Woodstock, 15, 16, and 17 year old kids easily get the mind set of every game is that easy, and when Woodstock comes to play ball its a reality check, Camden was easily 28 better than Woodstock, not on that night, breeze through game 1-11 and you think 12 will be that easy.

Hello Cannon, good to see you on board again this season. Yea TCC is loaded again…17 returning starters!!!

Aviking, thanks for the well wishes…I do know this now that I’m one, that coaches dont get enough credit for all that they do…man this profession requires a lot of you….long days, time away from your family, crazy parents who think “lil johnny” is better than he actually is…just a lot, but im ready. Now as far as the TCC/Lowndes scrimmage…I was totally floored and dissapointed at our showing in that game..well we didnt show up at all..no excuses!!! I understand that the team was smelling themselves before that game b/c everybody has been telling them how good they are…well I am glad that Lowndes walked all over us like that and perhaps it will wake the whole program up!! No matter what your tradition is, you have to strap it on every friday night and come to play full speed every play!!! Yea, that Ray Drew is a beast!!!
