New HS rankings and what Kell did Saturday

Just how much difference is there between the five classifications in Georgia high school football any more?

Cook (AA) beat Colquitt County, the preseason #5 in AAAAA. Fitzgerald blew away Tift in another Region 1-AA vs. 1-AAAAA game.

But for symbolism, there was a more significant upset:

Kell over Grayson, the #10 team in AAAAA.

It really wasn’t much of an upset as far as a surprise goes. Grayson suffered heavy graduation losses, and Kell was a AAAAAplayoff team in 2009 that returned an AJC Super 11 player in Brian Randolph.

But this is what’s significant: Kell is one of 54 schools that dropped in classification this year.

Several major programs – from Northside to Warner Robins to Carver to Dalton to Sandy Creek to Charlton County – moved down.

With less fanfare, several more solid programs also went down: Kell, Pope, East Paulding, Union Grove, Chapel Hill, Chattahoochee.

In doing preseason all-state teams for GHSF Daily last week, I noted that the AAAA all-star team would beat the AAAAA all-star team. AAAA has more major college prospects. It also has more teams – about 85 to 60.

IMO, AAAAA is still the best class, and the depth of AAAAA’s top 10 still will be a little better in the end than in AAAA. But the gap has shrunk.

Valdosta will be dropping out of the top 10 in 5A after Brooks Co.(AA) beats them this weekend. AA is loaded this year.

It will be interesting to see how Kell steps up now that there are expectations. Still have a tough schedule and in region is tough with Hiram, E. Pauld, and Sprayberry. Given they stay healthy I like their chances.

McEachern deserves every bit of that ranking. A very, very good team with an explosive offense and a strong defense.

Tift is down again this year, but the canes are a pretty good football team.

If you are ranked and you loose a game this early in the season and you should be knocked out of the top 10. Period.

I agree with Take em to the Woodshed. If McEachern is a top ten team ,then win a few and get back in. Peachtree Ridge looked suspect to me last night but we’ll see what they’re about in a couple weeks. Region 1 hype is being torn away early this year. Lowdnes is the only power team in that region this year. The rest are pretenders.

@Terry, Somewhat agreed, I don’t see how Peachtree Ridge looked weak other than the few defensive mistakes that led to big plays.

@COLLEGE COACH we will see if SWD belongs in the top 10 in 4A after they meet Tucker this Friday.

To “Quinn of the Ridge” I agree, McEachern has a solid but not great defense and an absolutely explosive offense, it seems they are never really out of the game. if their defense can catch up with offense I say they are a favorite for title in 5A. Best game in Dome last night.

Also for anyone who hasnt seen Creekside play, Eric Berrys twin brothers are freshmen starters there and they look like they will be carbon copys of Eric. They are very poised big play makers. Creekside will be a force in the near future if they can build around them.

The Tucker-SWD game will be interesting. Should tell a lot about where teams are, and starting to become a good Dekalb rivalry.

Colquit 430 yards of offense and 180 yards in penalties and numerous turnovers.
Numerous long gainers called back due to penalties.

Cook a little over 200 yards of offense.

The point is (and this from a Lowndes fan) Colquit is a lot better football team
than the score and out come showed.

Lowndes lost to Harrison in the first game in 2007 but had the last laugh
at the end of the season.

I’m not saying Colquit will be the team to have “the last laugh” this year
but come playoff time you will “not” want your team to be the one taking
them on.

3 Teams from 1AAAAA will be quite good come playoff time.
Valdosta, Lowndes and Colquit…..mark my words.
Tift will finish out the region come playoff time
and improve but not to the point of being feared.

Regarding AAAAA being a little watered down compared to last year.
Well Duh!!!!

Anytime Warner and Northside leaves your classification you have
now been watered down a little.

A number of very good football teams went down from AAAAA
and no one I can think of in significance was picked up by AAAAA.

Camden and Lowndes own the AAAAA championship and until
someone unseats them then AAAAA will remain the class to beat.

In Class AAA, I don’t personally agree with the St Pius X rank. I believe they should be in the lower half of the Top 10 at best. And honestly, Gainesville is going to have to prove themselves big time for me to accept a Top 10 Red Elephants ranking (Not saying it can’t be done). I believe you have hit North Hall right on the money for now. After the first three games for the Trojans, they might possibly earn something a little higher. Now for Class AA, I have only one thing to say. Hart County does not deserve to be there. At least not yet anyways. To me, they have been less than impressive the past two years.

Hard not to be biased but it doesn’t bother me for a team to stay ranked after losing a close game to a program that has won a state title, played for another and is generally in the mix year in, year out. Final ranking in December is all that really matters, anyway…it always shakes out the way it should in the end.

I remember 31 – 3 in the State Championship game against NSWR and the game was over within the first 7 minutes of the game 21 – 0. Now NSWR is back where they belong in AAAA. Yo is right to say that Camden and Lowndes are the class of the state and we look forward to that this year! Good Luck Region 1AAAAA!

“How can McEarchern be #7″

McEachern was ranked No. 7 (or somewhere close) in preseason. Nothing happened Saturday to suggest that ranking was inappropriate. McEachern lost to the No. 4 team in the final seconds on a controversial play.

Good points Yo. I wasn’t writing Colquitt County off, and one shouldn’t define a team. And of course AAAAA is weaker without Northside, but Northside is one team. The biggest reason it’s weaker is losing 18 teams, several that were pretty good.

Do not read too much into Grayson loss. Starting QB broke his hand versus North Gwinnett in scrimmage. Backup is a good runner but is not a QB. Second string QB only has a few plays down. Grayson has young team that will figure it out soon. Not saying they should be ranked but look for playoff run. Who impressed me in the dome was Brookwood. I have a feeling they will win region 8.

harrison was a AAAAA school, cook county is AA…@yo….your comparison is bad…oh and it should’nt be a challenge for 1-AAAAA teams to reach the playoffs this year with 5 teams? wow how dumb…that region is no longer the toughest…everything is up for grabs all season longg…everyone can trash talk when your team wins the big dance

What time is it??? Game time baby!!!! Thought it was tme for ole JAYBO to make his 2010 appearance…welcome back guys…its time to get this party started!! So my TCC Yellow Jackets are ranked #5..I wont kick up a lot of sand about that, I just think we are better than tucker, clarke central and griffin…and if you want my honest opinion, I think we are better than those world beaters from WR(LOL). No, but I do understand the logic behind ns being ranked #1. Looking forward to the season, but I wont have as much time to follow my team or vent b/c I am now coaching HS football as well. Good luck to all and lets have a good season!!

The HS front page references scores and schedules. Where can one find schedules and region alignments? The HS section seems as hopelessly disorganized as it always has been. GHSA site doesn’t seem much better. Where does one go for the best HS scores/schedules info?

August 22nd, 2010
8:05 pm

OK, I found the best site for HS scores, standings, and schedules: Great site. So Kell’s schedule has 9 games followed by a “region play-in” game. What the heck is that? Sounds like a “preplayoff” game. So you play 9 games and then have a mini-playoff to decide who makes the playofffs? Bizarro. That means the playoffs effectively start after 9 games.

There are some bizarre region classifications. Region 7-AAAA has 11 teams all in one division. Region 8-AAAA has 11 teams, but has divided into “A” and “B” divisions with six and five teams. Other divisions seem to range from 5-11 teams with no apparent rhyme or reason. Pretty bizarre.

Dome Watchin

Bartkowski –
How region 5AAAA works is they are divided into a north and south sub and in game 9 will be 1 v 4, 2 v 3, 3 v. 2, 4 v 1. To determine who goes to playoffs. So there is an outside chance all 4 teams could go from one sub region or you could go undefeated all year, win your sub, and lose in the last game. Rough way to end.

see this is why the south teams are better/ down south ga n the country where all the kids have is football and the kids been playing with the same group of kids all there life n the north half of ga the kids move around alot new schools all the time that sucks how most of westlakes talent went to langston hughes high school and it sucks how they suck to if you put them back together then maybe they will be a gud time again

It is obvious that when a team drops down from 5-A to 4-A that, as a 4-A team, they could be stronger than 5-A teams. They still have the same 5-A roster, just smaller overall enrollment. Some teams will drop down and then go back up during the next realignment and not miss a beat.

Tucker has more talent than southwest dekalb this year by a long shot. This year tucker team is a whole lot better than last year tucker team and this year southwest dekalb team is no where near last year team but it should be a good game if southwest playes perfect.

yes, South Ga teams are again ranked higher than North Ga. ask North Gw and Peachtree Ridge about the last time they played Lowndes. also, P.R. tied for a state title but I don’t remember N.G. ever winning one! Lowndes and Camden have combined to win 6 of the last 7 titles. South Ga will remain on top until N Ga can consistently do somethine about it! North Ga does have some great football but you also have many more teams and fewer titles!

GOOD to see ya…was hoping you were still around!!!…EAST back in AAAA…Ya ready for a REAMATCH!!!…LOL!

EAST looked good against Chapel Hill but that was a “tune-up” / scrimmage game…the real deal starts this friday against South Paulding at “THE BONEYARD”…

EAST goes to KELL on Sept. 17th…with Kell beating Grayson in the Dome this could be an interesting game…BUT Grayson fumbled a lot and Kell took advantage of at least three of them to score so a big key will be (as in any game) to hold on to the ball!!!

ANYWAY first things first…the FIRST countdown of the year…SOUTH PAULDING comes to
“THE BONEYARD”…with an interesting twist as they bring with them EAST “OLD” coach Glanton who couldn’t win a game at EAST if he tried!!! WELL Coach Glanton welcome “HOME?” but the atmosphere is different…”THE BONEYARD” is now WINNERSVILLE!!!

Well as far as Region 1-AAAAA that was the first game. There is a lot of season left. I believe that Colquitt County will get back into their groove. I am not sure about Coffee County and Tift County.
