AA preseason all-state team

Five comments about our Class AA preseason all-state team:

  • Carver of Columbus, the newest state power in Class AA, has four players on our team, the most of any school. It almost was five, as Carver DB Riyahd Jones is pretty good. He’s committed to Kentucky as a cornerback.
  • Class AA has perhaps more elite juniors than any other class. Buford OL Vadal Alexander (who will miss part of the season with a viral infection) and Carver DB Deion Bonner and have offers from multiple SEC and ACC schools before playing their first games as 11th-graders. Pepperell DL Dakota Ball has offers from Georgia and Georgia Tech. Alabama and Georgia want Dodge County’s Leonard Floyd as an OLB in their 3-4 defenses. Fitzgerald QB Kaleb Nobles has an offer from Clemson. Even the kicker, Calhoun’s Adam Griffith, has an offer. Alabama wants him. Buford DB Ryan Dillard, though undersized, should be getting similar offers. He’s the CB best known for his good work on Calhoun WR Da’Rick Rogers in the 2009 Class AA final.
  • Class AA also is stacked at RB. Carver’s Isaiah Crowell, Callaway’s Marquis Terrell and Westminster’s Ralph D. Abernathy IV (also known as RD4) each rushed for more than 1,500 yards last year. No other classification has three players who can claim that. Plus, Buford’s Dominique Swope rushed for more than 1,400 yards as a sophomore at Sequoyah in 2008. To make room here, we’ve got three RB and no TE, while having to leave out a great one in Lovett’s Zach Boden.
  • Shannon Brown, the Cook LB who has committed to Alabama, is listed first as a WR by his coach, Ken Cofer, who says he might line up at RB also.
  • Regions 6 and 7 have the most players selected. The tally goes like this: Region 1 (3), Region 2 (0), Region 3 (2), Region 4 (1), Region 5 (5), Region 6 (5), Region 7 (6), Region 8 (4). This makes us ripe for accusations of North Georgia bias, but it’s mostly a coincidence. If Carver and Charlton County had stayed in their classifications, this all-state team would be different.

“Plus, Buford’s Dominique Swope rushed for more than 1,400 yards as a sophomore at Sequoyah in 2008.”

Oh wait, Buford found a way to upgrade their roster by recruiting some kid away from another school??

No way.. what a shocker.

In all honesty, i’m sure their is a really “believable” and good reason as to why this happened. And I know their are Buford fans that will say “hey, if good football players want to come play football for us by exploiting various loophole in the system; why should we stop them?”

All i’m saying is, why don’t you guys take your D-1 football team and move out of AA??

Marist is a private school that could play lower but chooses to play up in AAAA. Why don’t you take a page out of their book.
Until you do this, you will never be considered among the states elite programs. All you have done is proved you can take a team full of D-1 talent and dominate AA.

Griffith has offers from LSU and Vandy as well as Alabama I read. He must be good to get an offer this early. UGA needs a kicker in 2012. Wonder if they have offered

Kramers, before you make any more smart ass assumptions, Swope is related to a Buford player from last year’s team (Andrew Swope). We’ve already proven we’re one of the State’s top programs, nothing you, or any other haters say can take that away.

Zach Boden gets a shout out but I guess his 11 yards per carry and tearing up Buford isn’t enough to get him on the pre-season team either. GHSF Daily loves them some Abernathy.

“Kramers, before you make any more smart ass assumptions, Swope is related to a Buford player from last year’s team (Andrew Swope).”

Welp, there is your “believable” and “good” explanation. Thank you.
I’m sure him transfering the Buford had nothing to do with him RUSHING for 1,400 YARDS as a soph. I’m sure its purely based on the fact that his 4th cousin plays for Buford.

What you have proven, Buford83, is your a dominate force in AA. And that you are able to take a team that averages about 5 D-1 recruits a year, and beat up on inferior competion.

It still baffles me that you guys lost to Lovett last year. I know Lovett is obviously a very good program and is extremely well coached, but are you serious? You guys were twice as big and twice as fast.

Kramers never competed in sports before if he thinks you win because you are bigger and faster. Upsets happen in sports all the time. That is why the games are played. Don’t be a hater. These are high school kids playing a great game we all love.

Geo.. you make a valid point and I understand your perspective. So let me clarify.
Upsets do happen all the time, your right about that. Maybe I just got a little excited and I was trying to throw a little salt in the wound. Touche

You are certianly right that this is a game we all love and these are just high school kids – no doubt about that.

To reiterate the point of my first post.. I really dont blame any of these kids. If I was a bigtime football player I would love to play for Buford b/c they have such a good program and it would benifit me to play with such good players – I get this. And I get that Buford isn’t going to turn away any good athlete who wants to come play for them – I get this.

My only real point in all this is that I think Buford should give some legitimate thoughts to moving up in class. They have clearly shown they are the power program of AA. And if they really are up their with the elite programs in the state… OR even Gwinnett County.. then play in their region.. or their class.. or CLOSE to their class. All those other Gwinnett teams who they say they are better than are playing in AAAAA.. and Buford is down in AA playing Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School – a litte private school with about 400 kids. This is were Ned Flanders would send his children. Or Cross Keys, a school that (bless their hearts, honestly) has an athletic budget of $0 and an atheltic program with as much stability an organization as… well, you get my point.

So to clarify.. i’m really not hating on Buford’s players or fans – not for one second. I have a lot of respect for both actually as they have a lot to be proud of; honestly. I’m hating on the system. okay, so maybe im hating on Buford administration a little.. b/c they are the ones who ultimately would have to do something if any of this is ever going to change.

PS – to keep the student body numbers low enough to stay in AA… if Matt Ryan Jr. wanted to transfer to Buford, would they kick some poor band member out of school to keep the attendence numbers down? How does that work? How do you open your door to “anyone” (aka, anyone that will make the football team better) but keep your attendance numbers down?

I have to agree with you Kramer and I’ll throw in another “elite” AA program in Calhoun. These guys pick and choose who they let in and they limit their enrollment so they don’t have to move up in classification. They-as you said-have some smirky excuse as to why these premier players just show up on their doorsteps. I have heard “build it & they will come”…allow me to paraphrase,”build it & we will decide who comes”. They will say that these kids get top of the line educations. Maybe so, but I’ve got one question. I’ve got a kid who’s IQ is 150 but he/she can’t play a lick of ball, can I bring he/she to Buford,Calhoun,Trion or any of these public/private schools? I don’t think so because if you let my child in, you’d have to let anybody’s child in and then your enrollment goes up and then your state athletic classification goes up then you can’t compete. Not hatin’ just debatin’

Kramer & RandyRio do u kno how many kids transferred out of buford b/c of personal reasons.Ure a complete idiot.IF North Gwinnett wanted to prove their the best tell the coach to call up Jess Simpson & schedule a game.Im pretty sure that any team in any classification would be scared to play the Wolves. They proved everybody wronged last year as a REBUILDING buford team shutdown the best player in the state in DA’rick Rogers.NOBODY wants to play this team. If ure school think their the BEST team in the state of GEORGIA look at their fingers & see how many rings they have on.

3:07 pm

& Dominique Swope is Andrew Swope’s brother & he chosed to play for buford. Don’t blame Buford football program bcuz they are givin their players the best opportunity a high school player can ask for.Im pretty sure half of the 2A teams can beat teams that are any higher classification.Like I said b4 if any team think they’re the best look at their fingers & see how many rings they have on.Obviosly none cuz everybody is haters.Remember Black friday in gwinnett county when every supposingly elite program lost in the playoffs & who was the last team standing the BUFORD WOLVES & they got another ring on there finger.

Rings…. Rings… Rings.. ya, ya, ya.

This like Boise St. screaming about how many conference titles they have.
You think Boise St. could consistantly have run the table in SEC?

August 20th, 2010
4:07 pm

kramers2009, you have to realize that all of the athletic programs at Buford have to be consider if they were to move up in classification. Sure than can and do compete with any & all in football, but they wouldn’t have the numbers to compete in most other sports. Not every decision can be based on football.

August 20th, 2010
4:10 pm

Now there is a valid response.

August 20th, 2010
4:37 pm

Well.. now that I rethink it.. Its a well presented point worth considering AND valid in the sense that yes, you are right about what you said.

BUT.. I cant help but think to myself… wait a minute, so Buford might not compete or have the numbers to compete in the other sports.. Yet they dominate in football?? They happen to dominate in the sport that requires the largest number of participants, the sport that is the most difficult to compete in, the sport that gets the most publicity and the sport that draws the most fans??

Well isn’t that convenient. Lucky them!
Must be something they put in the water within that school district that produces male atheletes who want to play and happen to excell at the sport of football. Its a shame that water doesn’t produce more athletes and convince them to play the other sports. They seem to be really concerned about it to.

What a joke.

Gwinnett County has always been envious of the Buford Sports program…Central Gwntt quit playing Buford for the longest because Buford gave them too much of a fight….so they chose to play the North, South, Norcross of the county….North Gwinnett shutters at the thought of having to play Buford(record 22-4-2)hell, we can not even get a scrimmage game with them. …A North/Buford game would fill up both stadiums (<10 miles apart) and they would not be any of that Fitzgerald /Wilcox Co crap………..just good old fashion hate.good luck to both programs…selah

Why hate on Buford? They have always been good. When they won in 2001 they were all hometown kids and now just because a players transfer there does not mean crap. It takes a team. Oh and btw Marist along with AAAA football is aweful. By far the weakest football in the state. Buford has been and will carry the Elite status for a long time. Hardwork and tradition always pays off. Jealous fans like u Kramer bash teams for no reason.

Colum-bust Fag, I mean fan….I really do think that C_C should have stayed in AAA, just because they will have had an easier time winning the AAA title than AA…….but won’t it be nice to start the season with the two best teams and end it with them playing again in the dome for all the marbles.good luck Carver-Columbus but 13-2 is not bad….Go Wolves

Remember when Fitz cried and cried last year after the Semi-final game. Finally a team member mentioned that Fitz and any team that has a brain recruits. In the end, the player makes a decision for what’s best for them. So if you want to be a great player where no-one cares (Cross Keys), or do you want to be a little better than mediocre and get a scholarship (Buford)? Are you an idiot! Do the math!
Buford applied for AAA over a year ago and the State would not allow it.
My Dad played on 10-0 team. My son played on two 15-0 Buford teams. Oh crap, at 57 I’ll take you one-on-one and kick your butt. So stop crying already, you don’t know your facts!
When the season is over, the season will be over until 2011.
Then you will start this crying again.
The road to the Dome goes through Buford!
The coaching staff at Buford is awesome and the work ethic of the players is superior, maybe that’s why your team can’t talk about the past eleven years.
Buford won State 6 times.
Buford was State runner up 4 times.
Buford made Quarterfinals 11 times out of the past 11 years.
Hum, pretty awesome work ethic and awesome coaching!
But wait there is more; it’s called community of supporters and the money to back it up!
