Preseason All-State: Class AAAA

The Class AAAA preseason all-state team is better than the AAAAA team published Monday. Not saying that AAAA is better than AAAAA, but its all-star team probably is.

Five of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution/GHSF Daily Super 11 players are in AAAA, plus several other big-time recruits. See our story on that below.

The hardest spot to make was kicker and punter. Seriously? Yep. Georgia has the No. 1-rated kicker nationally (Ammon Lakip of Chattahoochee), according to ProKicker.com, and the No. 1-rated punter nationally (Will Monday of Flowery Branch), according to KohlsKicking.com.

And both have produced on the field. They are not just combine freaks. That leaves out a pair of all-state kickers in Bainbridge’s Keenan Adams (a Colorado State pledge) and Dunwoody’s Adam Breed. Ryan Kay of Dutchtown is another who would be all-state in any other class. Here is a good story on Lakip on NeighborNewspapers.com.

The easiest spot to make was tight end. Nile Daniel is a fine player who has committed to Kentucky to play TE, but he’s really an H-Back for Griffin. With the popularity of the spread offense, perhaps TE is becoming obsolete for all-state teams.

The defensive line on this team represents a fearsome foursome. Ray Drew and Xzavier Dickson are Super 11 players, and Grady Jarrett (Clemson) and Terrance Smith (Florida State) are committed to ACC schools. And some say the best is LaMichael Fanning of Harris County, an Alabama commit who transferred from Auburn (Ala.) High.

Region 8 has the most players. It goes like this: Region 1 (2), Region 2 (1), Region 3 (5), Region 4 (2), Region 5 (3), Region 6 (5), Region 7 (1), Region 8 (6).

Offense

QB – Martay Mattox, Clarke Central, Sr.

RB – Shaquille O’Neill, Northside (Warner Robins), Sr.

RB – Quartterrio Morgan, Mount Zion (Jonesboro), Sr.

TE – Tye Turner, Griffin, Sr.

OL – Thomas O’Reilly, Pope, Sr.

OL – Nick Brigham, Marist, Jr.

OL – Alex Barr, Starr’s Mill, Sr.

PK – Ammon Lakip, Chattahoochee, Sr.

ATH – Brian Randolph, Kell, Sr.

Defense

DL – Ray Drew, Thomas County Central, Sr.

DL – Xzavier Dickson, Griffin, Sr.

DL – Grady Jarrett, Rockdale County, Sr.

DL – Terrance Smith, Southwest DeKalb

LB – Jordan Pierce, Clarke Central, Sr.

LB – Amarlo Herrera, North Clayton, Sr.

LB – James Vaughters, Tucker, Sr.

DB – Corey Moore, Griffin, Sr.

DB – Byron Isaac, Dunwoody, Sr.

DB – Justin Coleman, Brunswick, Sr.

DB – Chris Sanders, Tucker, Sr.

P – Will Monday, Flowery Branch, Sr.

Coming Wednesday: Class AAA. We’re still taking nominations for the remaining classes.

Griffin has 4 all state players and Dickson could be all state at tight end. They will have 3 all state receivers with Dickson, Turner, and Jordan and the other receiver that is not all state has D-1 offers. They will be explosive on offense. The defensive secondary will be tough. The linebackers will be the question. Dickson might have to move to middle linebacker like they did with Toby Jackson bc teams quit running to his side that will happen with Dickson. The QB should be fine bc he got a ton of experience last yr bc Griffin killed most teams they played. Better passer than last yr’s Qb but not the athlete that Waller was.

Again, I voice my concerns about adults obsessing over high school boys.

So I take it dawgs01 you are OK with adults obsessing about high school boys? Your attempt at an insult makes me think you are a high school student.

I remember that year that Jackson was moved to linebacker. They lost in the first round of the playoffs 41-7 to the Banneker Trojans!! let that guy play ball where he is and develop another end opposite him so that teams don’t know where they should go!!! it’s called coaching, maybe Griffin should try doing that when the weather turns cold!!

The Bears! Griffin is always loaded with D-1 guys and I think they might be tops in the state in NFL players.

Griffin has had lots of D-1 guys historically, but over the past 10 years, not so much until now. Coach Devoursey says this is the first time he’s had more than one D-1 guy (senior) in his 10 years. But Griffin is #1 in NFL players among Georgia schools with about 16-17.

Chick-Fil-A on Sunday. You did not play HS football, did you? The answer is no. I know already. So go back to your crossword and leave us jocks alone. Stop picking on us.

I’m confused. The article talked about Nile Daniel being the TE but there is not a Nile Daniel on the list. Tye Turner of Griffin was the representative at TE. There is a Nile Jordan (also of Griffin) at WR. Am I missing something?

Pretty obvious that Todd Holcomb is partial to those N. GA players when perusing this list. Guess there’s just not enough AAAA players in S. GA to even warrant a second look.(SARCASM ALERT) I know most of you are already aware of the bias that exists year in and year out so I’m not saying anything you don’t already know.

Look for Marist and SWD to be a lot stronger than many may expect this year. Marist had a down year last year and from I hear SWD has re-loaded. Stone Mountain will also have a very competitve team.

I know Griffin will have a good team but its hard to believe they can overcome the loss of last years quarterback. He was really elusive and seemed to be the key to that explosive offense. Do they have someone who fill his shoes this year.

Trojan, it is true that Griffin was beaten by Banneker Jackson’s senior year after changing his position but what you did not mention is that Jackson never stepped on the field that night. He received an injury early in that week and was unable to play. ironically it was the first game he had ever missed in all of his four years. The player that everyone is talking about is Nile Daniel, not Nile Jordan. I thought Griffin looked pretty impressive against a very good and huge Newnan team Friday night. I hope the DeVoursney’s 10th year will be a very good year!

MARCUS what you are talking about is partly true. I will agree witht the crazy onside kick call that sent that game in the playoffs out of wack was not a good idea. That was a crazy game. However, the D of that 09 team was one of the Best Ever in the State. It is a shame the way that things unfolded for those kids.

Tucker and Marist are the only teams being mentioned that have any significance in a top 4A program convo, they are consistantly in a title hunt.
