Fayette County PG Adam Smith was called "the best scoring guard in Orlando -- even better than Austin Rivers (Doc's son)" by some college coaches. I concur. Smith is a scoring machine. (AJC's Michael Carvell)
Georgia, known for producing some of the nation’s top high school basketball players, has one of its strongest and deepest groups of prospects for 2011, and the 2012 class is taking shape. The NCAA’s 20-day evaluation period for July ended Saturday, and here’s a quick look at some of the players generating chatter among college coaches.
Malcolm Brogdon, 6-foot-5, shooting guard, Greater Atlanta Christian: He’s the state’s hottest prospect, more than tripling his scholarship list to 13 offers after being one of the top scorers at the Nike Peach Jam near Augusta. He may have at least doubled that number in the Super Showcase in Orlando, but he was sidelined for most of the tournament with flu-like symptoms. He has impressed scouts with a strong all-around game against top AAU competition. If he improves his lateral quickness and strength over the next few months, he will be a top contender for Mr. Georgia Basketball. He is considering Georgia, Bradley, and Clemson, among others.
Adam Smith, 6-1, point guard, Fayette County: Now that Brogdon has been “discovered,” Smith is the state’s best player that nobody really knows about. He’s a scoring machine — some say the best overall in Georgia since Jodie Meeks at Norcross High in 2006. Smith can score from outside (65 percent on 3-pointers), by penetrating off the dribble, and with each hand. He has a few early offers (Tennessee Tech, Jacksonville, Murray State), but many others are intrigued. The delay is because many scouts are undecided about whether he’s tall enough. Smith scored a game-high 27 points in a head-to-head matchup with Rockdale’s Kevin Ware (committed to Tennessee) in last season’s playoffs. Smith has greatly improved his ball-handling skills since February. He averaged 24.5 points for Georgia Impact this summer.

Shannon Scott: NBA player's son that is NOT spoiled (AJC's Michael Carvell)
Shannon Scott, 6-2, point guard, Milton: Over the summer, Scott transformed from one of the state’s top prospects to an acclaimed national prospect. Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers was so impressed after watching Scott play against Rivers’ son in the Super Showcase, that he gave Scott a pep talk after the game and compared him to Celtics guard Rajon Rondo. If Scott had asserted himself a little better at the end of that particular game, he may have elevated himself to one of the top two or three at his position across the nation. That still could happen before his senior season ends. Scott is the son of Charlie Scott, who was the first black basketball player at North Carolina and played eight seasons in the NBA.

Milton SG Evan Nolte was followed by Coach K, Roy Williams and many other celebs this summer (AJC's Michael Carvell)
Tony Parker, 6-8, forward, Miller Grove: Parker is the state’s best prospect — regardless of class — at power forward. Other big kids simply cannot match up. He has superior foot quickness that allows him to maneuver around defenders and create inside scoring opportunities. He knows how to draw fouls with the best of them and is just about automatic at the foul line. He took a lot of breaks on defense in Orlando, but perhaps it was from his brutally long summer, including three weeks in Europe with the USA U17 team. [UPDATED: I retract my evaluation of Parker. He's one of the state's best power forwards, in the top five, but not necessarily No. 1 overall in his class or in Georgia]
Evan Nolte, 6-8, shooting guard, Milton: Nolte escaped the shadows of his heralded high school teammates, making the smart decision to play with his own age group with the Southern Kings U16. It forced him into the role of a team leader and did wonders for his confidence. While he had a shooting slump in Orlando, he maintained the shooter’s mentality — and kept launching shots. It seemed as if he couldn’t miss at the Peach State in early July. He is considered one of the nation’s best outside shooters in his class.

Jarmel Reid, younger brother of UGA's Jeremy Price (AJC's Michael Carvell)
Jarmal Reid, 6-7, guard/forward, Columbia: Reid’s lingering ankle injury was better in Orlando, and he put on a show. The Southern Kings played him at every position on the court, including point guard and center, and he excelled at each. He is called “Mr. Mismatch” by his coaches. Reid has the body size of a college player, yet is fleet-footed. He was rewarded this week with scholarship offers from Florida and Alabama, adding to a list that includes Georgia. Reid is the younger half-brother of Georgia power forward Jeremy Price.

Thanks for the high school basketball coverage. The AJC has been really lacking when it comes to high school basketball and everyone, Norcross, Wheeler, Milton, everyone agrees it good to see some coverage in your news papers. Keep up the good work

Should be headlined: “The HOT Sheet: Look at top male Georgia HS basketball players”. Would be nice if you’d do the same for the female athletes who work just as hard.

And to think… Adam Smith and Brogdon were high school teammates at Fayette during Noel Johnson’s senior season. Fayette is building a dynasty. That state title will come…

Westover has probably the best shooter in Albany,Georgia or in the State in Malcolm Sapp who is a rising senior who has not gotten any respect from the recruiters and he is also is a good student so recruiters need to come down to Albany,Georgia to check out Malcolm Sapp this year because he is now the leader of the Westover Patriots this year after losing to the eventual state champions Columbia in the Final Four in Macon!!!!

wow how stupid can some people be?? Dude writes for the AJC not the MJC or TJC. Three guesses what the A stands for. How many articles on metro Atlanta basketball players are written in the Macon or Thomasville papers – assuming they have papers

@Big Man, thanks for your comments. I thought Adam Smith was really good last season. I thought he was GREAT this summer (much improved with ball-handling, passing, and going to his left). He’s one of the most explosive scorers I’ve seen at the HS level. Somebody, some college, is going to hit the jackpot with Adam Smith. He is a rare talent. I hope he posts some of his summer video soon.

The class of 2012 is deep in Ga. The three players you mentioned are all good players. This story is irrelevant in discussing this class of players without mentioning William “Shaq” Goodwin (SWD) or Jordan Adams (formerly of Central Gwnntt)who are without question the top two players in this class in GA. The size, skill and versatility of these two players is unmatched for their respective positions Adams (SG/SF) and Goodwin (PF).

@MG…I agree that Shaq Goodwin & Jordan are very under the radar as it relates to getting there respect in state. But, how can you say they are top 2? Tony Parker, Evan Nolte, Jarmal Reid….all five of these kids can be 1,2,3,4 or 5. That is a very, very good top 5. Not to mention guys like Robert Carter, Justin Tuoyo, Brandon Morris, Damein Wilson & Jordan Price who all will play at the high major level. 2012 in Georgia is very very good.

@Carvell, thanks for all the love during the summer for Georgia AAU basketball. Please continue to promotoe Georgia basketball!! Is there anyway that you can start a petition to change the high school state final four? Having games at Gwinnett & Macon is a terrible idea. All the games should be in one place for true bball fans.
