Sunday is first practice day, but most HS football teams will pass

High school football teams can begin practice on Sunday (Aug. 1). However, several metro Atlanta schools will wait wait at least a day to get started.

A sampling of local football coaches indicated almost no one wanted to start on Sunday.

Centennial’s Jeff Measor: “We are not setting a good example if we put football before God’s day. I’ve never required anything from our kids on Sunday and never will. We aren’t going to win or lose a game by pushing practice back a day.”

Stephenson’s Ron Gartrell: “It’s a long season. It’s not that important that I take a Sunday away from the players and coaches. Sunday is a very important family day for most.”

Milton’s Scott Walker: “We don’t start school this year until the last week of August so we will have twice as many practices as we have ever had. We work back from the date of our first game and keep our plan in place. We will be at camp for a week, which we have never done, so we will get plenty of work in.”

Tucker’s Franklin Stephens: “There is no particular reason other than we will not be a in a camp setting. I prefer for the kids to have Sunday for church and other family- and friend-related activities. We will infringe on their Sunday time enough during the season.”

Kell’s Derek Cook: “Cobb County has a rule against Sunday activities … and I am not willing to ask my family, my coaches or my players to be away from their family at this time during the season as we’ll spend enough time together soon enough.”

Norcross’s Keith Maloof: “The kids work so hard over the summer that we as a coaching staff feel that one day is not a big deal.”

South Gwinnett’s John Small: “On Sunday, we have so many kids doing church and family things. … It would have been nice if the date was changed around since Aug. 1 feel fell on Sunday this year, but oh, well.”

Creekside’s Johnny White: “We did not want to interfere with the church services for our athletes.”

John Creek’s Mike Cloy: “Sunday is for family. We do not interfere with people’s Sundays anytime.”

Now it’s YOUR turn. What do you think about HS football teams practicing on Sundays? Are you FOR IT or AGAINST IT and why? Please post below. Thanks

The NFL *plays* on Sunday. Major League Baseball *plays* on Sunday. Why not have a sundown Friday to sundown Saturday prohibition? Why have any at all?

Delbert – It is all about people being able to watch the games on TV and being able to travel to them. You know I believe if everyone has a devotion and remembers who is in charge, then I don’t believe the good Lord minds if I take my kids to a game and we can enjoy good quality family time.

If GHSA had paid attention they probably would have made it August 2 but no big deal. Most coaches don’t want the grief that comes with calling kids in on Sundays unless it is playoff film sessions.

Not the first time GHSA hasn’t paid attention to calendars and I know other mistakes have been found in the white book before. I know it is alot to pay attention too but it needs to be done.

Sunday is God’s day, no matter what faith you are. A day of rest, a day of worship. Kudos to the coaches for recognizing that, no matter what the GHSA allows.

I don’t have a problem with any that do practice tomorrow nor a problem with any that choose not to. Their program, their call afaic but I can’t imagine it’d be worth the grief that some folks might give them if they did.

JD: You are wrong there. Sunday is not “God’s day no matter what faith you are”. Sabbath is, always has been, always will be, sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. G-d established that in the Hebrew scriptures (what you would know as the Old Testament) and never changed it. Pompous men with large egos decided they had the authority to declare Sunday “the Lord’s day” but Friday night-Saturday night is the Sabbath, and that day is the day G-d’s Word promises the most blessings to those who keep it.

I say no to practice on Sunday’s. By the way, WHY are we now playing summer football? This is crazy!! My high school team will play a practice game and 2 reg. season games in August!! High school football should start after Labor Day!! Will it take a kid dying in this heat for the GHSA to move football back to the fall where it should be??? I’m a former athletic trainer and this is crazy starting high school football this early!! Up until a few years ago, school started after Labor Day!! Our State Rep’s and our State Sen’s can and should do something about this!!!! I am a co-host of a sports talk show on Friday nights call “Football Friday Night” on WOKA “Dixie Country” 106.7 FM from 6pm to 8pm. You can call us at 866-576-1067 and discuss this Friday, 8/6/2010.

I agree Dawg. I played a little high school and college ball myself. I had a mild heat stroke one morning in August in high school…my kid will be a freshman this year in high school and they report at 6pm tonight. I will be worried about him. Oh and I agree Sundays are for family and GOD.

Midnight Madness in South Georgia…..Colquitt County practiced from midnight til 2:00 AM this morning with a pretty good-sized crowd watching…cool weather after a soaking rain made it bearable.

Dawg – You might as well face it that the big time football coaches have more say so than any State Rep. Case in point is that you still have spring football, but there is no fall baseball, tennis, or spring softball, spring basketball practices. Even some football coaches want to do away with it but they do it because everytbody else does it.

Tonight the Lions will be on the prowl from midnight to 2AM and then again at 5:30 am to 7:30 am. We’re expecting a pretty big crowd. Look out region 2AAAAA. The Lions of Westlake are coming to get you. Stay tuned for pictures.

The preacher told the boys this morning at church to get their lazy asses out on the field this afternoon. Na just kidding, its football time though.

It was stated that Sunday is a holy day. Well, the world celebrates Sunday but Sunday is not the true day of worship. If you read Exodus 20:8-11 then you will notice that the seventh day is Saturday. Furthermore, the Sabbath was never changed by God. It was changed by man. Lastly, Sunday is the first day of the week.

Sunday was the day the Lord was resurrected. Also Paul said to bring tithes and offerings on the first day of the week.(Sunday). After Jesus was resurrected we are to worship God on the first day
of the week, putting God first, not on the Sabbath the last day of the week.

I tell you what Larry and Mike T., I don’t know who changed it but I do know that I grew up playing ball, riding bikes, and going to games on Saturdays and then on Sunday morning I went to church and Sunday School. I think I turned out pretty good as did all my family.

I had the 12:01a.m. practice on the first eligible day when I was in HS but I think that was a Monday. Most of the team was still awake when practice started. It is a great way to cut down on the practice inefficiencies caused by late night poker games. Now it seems like a smart way to beat the heat. Most fun I ever had in practice.
