Starr's Mill WR Jeff Greene (Special)
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson found the big and speedy wide receiver he needed for his offense when Starr’s Mill High’s Jeff Greene committed to the Yellow Jackets.
The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Greene picked Georgia Tech over Duke, Mississippi State, South Florida, Cincinnati, East Carolina and Middle Tennessee State. Greene is commitment No. 10 for Tech’s 2011 football recruiting class.
“I met with Coach Johnson for about an hour, and we talked about the recruiting process, how kids have until Feb. 2 to sign,” Greene said. “However, with Georgia Tech, it’s first-come, first-serve with the scholarships. I didn’t want to pass up on a good opportunity so I committed on the spot after being offered.”
“I’m excited about Georgia Tech. Coach Johnson is a winner, and has won everywhere he has coached. Georgia Tech has great academics, and a college degree from there will help you after football. And it’s close to home, which will allow my friends and family come to the games.”
Last year at Starr’s Mill, Greene caught 33 passes for 630 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was clocked at 4.61 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Greene was just beginning to attract big-time attention from college recruiters.
“Georgia Tech has like eight guys on their list at wide receiver that they are looking at,” Greene said. “Coach Johnson said the No. 1 guy out of Seattle would probably stay closer to home. They showed me the recruiting board, and my name was at No. 2 for wide receiver. That made me feel really good, that they thought that highly of me.”
Greene said after he committed, Johnson asked several questions to make sure that he was content with his decision. Greene confirmed to the coach that his mind was made up.
“[Johnson] said some people dog Tech out about its passing attack, how they have a reputation for being a running team,” Greene said. “He told me, ‘Jeff, don’t listen to those people. If you can do something with the football, we will find a way to get it it to you.’ He also told me if I really worked hard, that I would have the chance to play early.”

He might have great hands and great size, but definately not great speed. 4.6? A WR running a 4.6 is not a great thing. He couldn’t beat some of our Linebackers we have on the team. It’s a shame when a LB is faster or is at least as fast as a WR. Maybe when we play you guys when this kid is on your squad, instead of having a corner on him, we’ll put sack master OLB Justin Houston to cover him and I bet he could.

Looks like a great pick-up for Tech…My have to redshirt but could be a sleeper…I’m a big time dawg fan but just wanted to say some positive things about the kid before some others start bringing up the number or stars or who was or was not recruiting him…I see that way too much on the dawg blogs from other fans….There is way too much made about how many stars a young man has just from some recruiting services opinion…Its about heart and if you ever played the game you would know that the number of stars you had in high school won’t mean much when you get on the field…Again looks like a great pick-up for Tech..

The 40 time is misleading. He’s missed a lot of camps and combines this summer because he broke his hand last year and is just now healthy again.
He is a second team 5AAAA track team member.
Also, it should be noted that Bay-Bay Thomas ran a 4.6 when he committed. Guess who ran a 4.6 at the Browns combine last year? Come on, take a guess. UGA’s own Mohammed Massaquoi.
His speed will come down with some more training. He’s a really nice get for GT. 6′6″ is a good size.
Plus, he was present at Dawg night, guess Richt just couldn’t quite pull him in.

Again, before Dawg fans jump on him about his offer list, he was hurt over the Spring with a broken hand and missed a lot of camps and combines thus the reason for his small offer list.
His recruitment was starting to build. He had recently been to a camp at Ohio St. and was at Dawg night as well.

CPJ doesn’t look at “stars” on the Rivals page – he recruits kids he thinks can play – I’ve read a couple of stories on his recruiting philosophy. He gets winners and hard workers.
And CPJ kinda reminds me of Bear Bryant a little – he can take his’n, and beat your’n or he could take your’n and beat his’n – as the ol’ country folks used to compliment and assess The Bear.

Way too many on here make too much of the 40 times…I can give you a long list of player that ran a sub 4.4 or or better at the receiver position and just never made it for one reason or the other…It takes more than just pure speed to be a great receiver, yea speed definitely helps but guys a 4.6 or 4.5 aint slow….if you think it is then get out there and try and cover a receiver who only has 4.6 speed…I know the pros like the great 40 times but i can promise you there is a lot, lot more they look for in evaluating a great receiver..

Come on fellow dog fans…grow up. A 4.6 is nothing to scoff at as Gtax brought up with Thomas and Massaquoi. Good luck at GT Jeff…GT absolutley disproved the whole cant prove a WR myth last year with Thomas being the number one receiver taken. I think the dog fans need to look at some of the players we have taken recently…several have only had one big time offer and were being recruited by schools like MTSU and ECU. Such as Hunter Long(OL) who had offers from Arkansas State, Memphis, MTSU, Murray State, Southern Miss, Tennessee Martin, and UGA. Might want to zip it guys we recruit the same kind of kids sometimes…and they can turn out to be great ball players…

Congradulations to Tech in gaining what seems like a quality young man. But, once again the AJC bias against Georgia flares its ugly head. How is a 5-star UGA basketball recruit looking around at other schools related to Tech signing a football player? Give up? Its not related at all; but, it is another chance for this newspaper to write a negative spin on the UGA athletic program. Day after day it happens. Even when you google AJC Sports it says, Atlanta sports, Braves, Falcons, Hawks, Tech, Thrashers…and then as an afterthough..UGA news.

set state records in the 100 meters (10.35, Justin Scott-Wesley). Just face it Tech, you are are a second tier football team. Just a step behind. Missed your chance last year. Good luck with your new language!!!!

techfan…..not ranked, what do you mean? College coaches don’t look at those ranking from Rivals or Scout. Those are just fun sites for fans and a way they can suck money from the uninformed. Get real with that unranked nonsense. This is the real world where big time college coaches make big, big money. They are not concerned with Rivals. They trust their paycheck to their ability to evaluate talent.

Brian…you are the one talking/commenting about him. Bay Bay Thomas was a top notch receiver…the best according to the NFL talent evaluators…plenty of people care about him….hes making more than Dez Bryant..who was supposedly so much better. Richt does recruit some great players but what do we have to show for it?? Nothing since 2005….quit living in a dream land. Tech landed one of the best kids in the state last year who set a few track and field records..Stephen Hill…you sound like a huge d bag trying to tear a kid down who likely has accomplished more than you have on the grid iron…he is heading to a big time BCS program…the highest level of college football..even if they play in the ACC. Embarrassing comments such as yours make the UGA fan base look like a bunch of retards…we really have nothing to show for all these recruits…open your eyes…Tech will get good recruits…we will get hyped up 5 star recruits that cant play as a team. I dont know how any UGA fan can continue to brag about recruiting…they are 20-7 over the last two years….we have been on the downslide and that doesnt look to change with a freshman QB and new defense this year…you need to take a hard look at UGA before you try to tear down other programs.

Hmmm… Misleading? Not very much so at all.. Last time I checked, a 4.6 was a 4.6 and nothing other than a 4.6… And how in the heck to you justify that comment by saying “he broke his hand last year”. Yeah, and i hear hear Middle Tennessee State of who cares was “hard up” for this cat… lol please. You know what you call a 6′6″, 200 lbs football player who runs a (generous) 4.6? An anorexic Defensive End.. You guys could get Ronald McDonald, and 3/4 of you would start screaming he’s the next coming of Boo Hoo Thomas.. The funniest part was your reference to Dawg Night.. All recruiting sites I have visited say the Dawgs never offered.. Hmm.. So i guess since Gabe Wright’s mom was in attendence at Dawg Night, that means the Dawgs were trying to “pull her in” too? what position does she play? And how many recruits come to Dawg Night? Last i checked, it was over 40 + of the state’s TOP TALENT, and lo and behold, according to this source (proof of my comment, for you idiot tech bloggers) he WASNT INVITED. Hmm.. So your only way to celebrate a recruit nobody besides third rate teams offered, is to LIE, and say UGA wanted him? You’re almost as pathetic as your stupid comments..
Please do a little background check on info before you open your mouth and vomit out words that have NO legitimacy. And we all know your sad program is still jealous of the fact that we actually have a big time event like Dawg Night, where ACTUAL talented student athletes attend. What does Tech have? Nothing but another Div. I cast-away. Do yourself a favor Jeff Greene, and actually major in something that will get you a decent job after college, b/c if you had any chance of taking it further, UGA would have offered. Or UF. Or Bama, Or Auburn, Or UT, etc. Get the picture?

I am a die hard dog fan…I even supported and continue to support the basketball team…not fair weather at all. I just dont like seeing my fellow UGA fans spout of half truths….Richt recruits kids who have stars…that doesn’t mean as much as you think it does. Plenty of 3 star recruits turn into 3 year starers on the college level and later turn into NFL players…just like Bay Bay Thomas who was a no name 3 star recruit from Dublin GA. PJ recruits good ball players…players he knows will fit the system…the man deserves respect in my book. I think PJ knows what he is doing…and Tech fans have little to worry about with his recruiting…it is just as good as Chan Gaileys.

Furthermore, I was not trying to say that a hand injury caused his 40 time to be a 4.6, but it rather his not being able to compete in combines and camps because of it has caused scout sites to be unable to accurately update his 40 time. Moron.

@Everyone, it sounds like this kid was a good pickup for Georgia Tech. We’ll know more as his senior year progresses, but he’s a big kid with decent speed that has a lot of raw athleticism. For whatever reasons (HS offense, injuries, etc.), Jeff Greene was just beginning to show up on the recruiting radar. I would not be surprised at all if other ACC/SEC schools made some overtures in the next 3-4 months, especially if Jeff gets off to a good start to his senior year. As far as recruiting rankings, they are a lot of fun to debate, but they are not the final determination of a prospect’s worth at the collegiate level. Two of the NFL’s most accomplished WRs, Terrell Owens (Chattanooga) and Jerry Rice, were “Zero Stars.” NOW I’m not saying Jeff Greene will make it to the NFL, or even play a down in college, just that you never really know how a prospect will turn out. Jeff certainly has good potential.

Talk to me after this year and the next, when we see what “his” recruits actually do. Who recruits a 0 star RB to run the most important position in the offense (QB) anyway? Airyn Willis , anyone? Still displeased that Nick Marshall chose to star in our new D instead of being “the man” at tech for the next few years, aren’t you? Sounds like that young man has his head on correctly. Until you get on here and name some facts about the guy other than call him “third stringer” and the like, your comments are nothing more than name calling and put downs which adds nothing the blog and by definition makes you a troll.
I was enriching the blog content with actual facts and I have backed up all of my facts of which you originally refuted, but you can’t even accept my arguments when I provide my sources.
You should probably go back to the UGA blogs. I wasn’t bringing in UGA for the sake of comparing GT to UGA, but stating that he was picking up interest by attending camps and Ohio State and UGA.
Also, you can’t knock his offer list. He was freaking hurt last year and didn’t go to combines and camps. His hand was broken and he is a WR! So just how the hell do you think he was going to amass a great offer list? He’s healthy now and luckily Paul Johnson was able to nab him before other school came calling.

This whole string is making me sick. “Tasty Bees,” you are rude and disrespectful. Your comments about Y are baseless and classless. There’ s simply no reason to treat people that way–and bragging on the Blog is just as unattractive as it is when done person-to-person. You do not represent the Dawg nation very well at all.
And Tech fans, this kid averaged ~20 ypc. That says something. He’s got size, which is a huge advantage–and speed may come as he gets into a collegiate S&C program. A good get for the Jackets, who seem to have picked him up just as his commitment process was heating up.

It’s hilarious watching this GTU fan with obviously too much time on his hands persistently make excuses for another one of Johnson’s scrub recruits. To them there is nothing this man can do wrong, but that will quickly change starting this season.
Let them have their fun while they can. The way Johnson is downgrading the talent of this roster, they are going to be fighting Duke for the basement in short order(they’re already fighting them for recruits!)

Nice pick up for Tech.
UGA, Bama, Ohio St, South Carolina were all evaluating him, he had broken hand while all the other recuits were at camp, explains why he’s behind on offers.
His size remind me of AJ Green. I hope he can take hits better then AJ.
His Speed is fine – Thomas came to Tech with 4.6+ time, left with 4.37 time

Hill will play a significant role for Tech. Ga didnt offer him quick enough so he went with Tech. He could have played significant time this season had he become a Dawg. One question —what will Nesbitt do after his career in college. If hed played a different position hed be sitting in the pros counting money. FYI—the pros dont run the option and rarely will they train a qb to play a different position. Hill would have gotten way more exposure not playing on a team with 90 percent running of the ball for plays. just saying—-I salute Nesbitt for what he has done. If the new 4.61 stick could put on 35 pounds and not go to a 4.8 hed have a chance. Hill will do some damage —I just think you can go unnoticed in a run all the time offense. And one last thank you to Bay Bay for dropping that ball against the Dawgs last year.
If manboobs would have just kept running it the bees would have won. God Bless and lets get ready to Rumble…….

Newsflash UGA fans bashing the kid, his 40 time, his offers etc. As Tech fans we could give a flying crap! He is exactly what Tech wants and needs. Big kid, can win the jump ball with good hands. By the time he hits the field be will be 215-220 and will have shaved a couple tenths off that 40 time. What do you have then? A 6-6, 220lb. reciever with a 4-4 forty who has good hand and blocks. Sounds like another 1st round pick to me. Doesn’t matter to Tech fans and more importantly Tech coaches how many stars or how many “big” offers a kid has. They want kids who want to be at Tech and fit what Tech does.

Bay Bay going in the first round is hard to dispute. Greene will see a lot of one on one with this offense taking the attention away from the pass. 4.6 is actually slow compared to the others but these tall guys seem to get faster as they mature. The fastest guy on the Tech team is a safety at 6′4″ and I bet you he was not that fast in high school at Marist. Also when you are one on one with a much shorter defender you get away with a lot if you have good hands and you are physical.

4.6 isn’t slow. As far as getting ready to block…well, everyone knows that NFL WR’s don’t have to know how to block. Right? And lot’s of under 4.4 track guys can’t get open, can’t run clean routes, can’t catch, and can’t body up on cornerbacks. If everything else is sound, than 4.6 is PLENTY fast.

Again, when UGA gets a kid who doesn’t have like 30 offers he’s considered a steal, when Tech gets one, it’s because he’s a bad player. Yall are so predictable, you need some new material. The Dawg fans on this blog wouldn’t know a legit 40 time if it bit them in the rear end. FWIW, I think Jeff Greene is going to be star. Bay-Bay ran a 4.6 when he came in. He ran a sub-4.4 when training for the NFL combine. If Jeff Greene puts on some muscle and gets stronger, the 40 time will improve. Even if it doesn’t, he’s going to be hard to cover, and in CPJ’s system he’ll mostly have to deal with single coverage.

oh yeah were idiots all right…dominance head to head…won 7 of the last 8….5 first round draft picks to every 1 Tech has…2 Heisman winners to none…6 ten win seasons in 9 years…and before some Tech fan gets on the Bobby Dodd bandwagon and starts talking about number of national championships…we both have 1 since players started wearing facemasks…face it, this is a fine young man and Tech is lucky to have him; but, with your high school triple option offense (an offense btw which leads you to lose every bowl game and everytime you come off a teams bye-week..because, give the extra prep time and its easy to stop. The only reeason you have any success at all is, the offense is so outdated no one prepares for it unless they are playing Tech)but back to the point…with your high school offense, it doesn’t mnatter if he is 8ft 6…you throw the ball three times a game…hope he can block…oh and as far as last years polls go…your best team in 20 years faced our worst team in 10 years and managed to lose…and get gashed with a running game which had been suspect all year…I suppose we just hadn’t played a sorry enough defense…My suggestion for Tech is stick to engineering…you truly are one of the best in the country in that area…Tech is a very fine school…but, UGA with the exception of a couple of blips has always controlled this state as far as football goes…which in the south, is pretty dang far.

Welcome to the flats Greene. Could not find any film on the kid, but read that he has good hands and blocks out well. My guess is that is why CPJ went after him. If he is 6′4″ 200 lbs in high school then he could definitely beef up for college and be a good WR while blocking for the run. UGA fans that want to bash this kid are stupid and rely to much on rivals to tell them if they are going to have a good team. Do you think Richt recruited AJ Green because rivals or scout told him it was a good idea. I also don’t think Green would have been a good fit for GT as he is not going to put a DB on his back. GT fans trust in CPJ and don’t really care if UGA fans like who he recruits or not.
