FOOTBALL RECRUITING: Starr’s Mill WR Jeff Greene is commitment No. 10 for Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Starr's Mill WR Jeff Greene (Special)

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson found the big and speedy wide receiver he needed for his offense when Starr’s Mill High’s Jeff Greene committed to the Yellow Jackets.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Greene picked Georgia Tech over Duke, Mississippi State, South Florida, Cincinnati, East Carolina and Middle Tennessee State. Greene is commitment No. 10 for Tech’s 2011 football recruiting class.

“I met with Coach Johnson for about an hour, and we talked about the recruiting process, how kids have until Feb. 2 to sign,” Greene said. “However, with Georgia Tech, it’s first-come, first-serve with the scholarships. I didn’t want to pass up on a good opportunity so I committed on the spot after being offered.”

“I’m excited about Georgia Tech. Coach Johnson is a winner, and has won everywhere he has coached. Georgia Tech has great academics, and a college degree from there will help you after football. And it’s close to home, which will allow my friends and family come to the games.”

Last year at Starr’s Mill, Greene caught 33 passes for 630 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was clocked at 4.61 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Greene was just beginning to attract big-time attention from college recruiters.

“Georgia Tech has like eight guys on their list at wide receiver that they are looking at,” Greene said. “Coach Johnson said the No. 1 guy out of Seattle would probably stay closer to home. They showed me the recruiting board, and my name was at No. 2 for wide receiver. That made me feel really good, that they thought that highly of me.”

Greene said after he committed, Johnson asked several questions to make sure that he was content with his decision. Greene confirmed to the coach that his mind was made up.

“[Johnson] said some people dog Tech out about its passing attack, how they have a reputation for being a running team,” Greene said. “He told me, ‘Jeff, don’t listen to those people. If you can do something with the football, we will find a way to get it it to you.’ He also told me if I really worked hard, that I would have the chance to play early.”

Damon Evan is not a teenager, he was the face of your Athletic Department. You paid him a 1/2 million dollars, the joke is thUGA! You can make this sh*t up, thUGA athletics is pure comedy.

Congrats to the kid…he has some potential and hopefully the Tech coaches can draw that potential out. But to all these Tech fans that think for one minute that the Dawgs were interested in him, you are out of your minds. Georgia never recruited him because we are looking at four other wideouts who could start immediately…just be thankful that you got somwone who might fill a need on offense…please quit comparing your recruits to ours, it will only get you one win in 10 years!

Tech Fan,

That’s because ALL your recruits are these sorts of guys. UGA takes maybe one or two project players like this kid a year.

Clarification and UGA gets 4-5*’s that don’t get better. No “Project Player” at uga stands a chance of seeing the NFL. A UGA project Player is a kid that will be in jail and richt will try to make him a good christian. Uga projects don’t work so well.

Massaquoi ran a 4.60 at the NFL combine – that seems to be fast enough to play in college.

Tech takes 3 star receivers and makes them the first pick in the draft. Uga takes 5 star players and sends them to the deep fryer at McDonalds.

it’s funny to see all the Georgia haters comparing this kid to 2 Georgia STARS that were 2 of the highest rated player in the country coming out of high school. players are rated on more than just their 40 time (unless it is sub 4.4)

Who cares….UGA did not want the kid…does that mean he is not a good kid or that he is/will not be a good player? I do not know and neither do any of you!

GT wanted him and they got him…thus i guess gongrats are in order to GT and the kid and his family!

@ DOGTARDS run this state:

Did Damon Evans screw up? YES! BIG TIME!
he is now gone…history!

On the other hand..was Damon Evans a good AD?
He left the UGA athletic department sitting on a SURPLUS of 70 million dollars! At the same time you techies sit there EVERY year crying crocodile tears because you cant afford to buy out CPH’s contract….

I read some earlier blogs that commented that Greene lacked stars. Scout.com has given him 3 stars, and I expect, after reading about him without any bias, that he will likely have 4 by the end of his senior season.

“A WR running a 4.6 is not a great thing. He couldn’t beat some of our Linebackers we have on the team”

A.J. Green couldn’t have beaten those 4.4 LBs either when he came out. He ran a 4.5 in high school.

For those just fascinated by “stars” and bogus 40 yard dash times; Wes Welker who led the NFL in receptions 2 out of the last 3 years was a “0″ stars recruit at Texas Tech and runs a 4.65 40. For those intereted in more Georgia Tech football articles go to http://isportsweb.com. Go Jackets and forget the stars!

UGA fans crack me up. They talk about “Gailey’s players” like Chan Gailey whipped their butts every year he coached at Tech. He never beat UGA, so I can see why they miss him. They are right, though. GT will now be fielding players that CPJ recruited specifically for his system. I think the fun is just about to start for the Jackets.

You guys talking smack about a high school kid (who lives in the area, no less) have no class, and your desperate attempts to belittle each and every GT recruit only shows your fear. That’s alright, though. If I were a Dawg fan, I’d be afraid too.

Welcome to GT, Jeff!! One thing is certain. You have a bright future ahead of you. Work hard and stay out of trouble, and there is no limit to what you can achieve. You’ve definitely given yourself an advantage by choosing GT!!

FWIW, I think Jeff Greene is going to be star. Bay-Bay ran a 4.6 when he came in. He ran a sub-4.4 when training for the NFL combine. If Jeff Greene puts on some muscle and gets stronger, the 40 time will improve. Even if it doesn’t, he’s going to be hard to cover, and in CPJ’s system he’ll mostly have to deal with single coverage.

It’s hilarious to see carvell try to spin this as anything other than a bad pickup. We are TECH we should be able to bring in top flight wrs and this guy isn’t one. He is a horrible pickup for us and is unranked and not even close to what we need at wr. CPJ must do a better job of wr recruiting because we need to be able to pass the ball and no spin by carvell on this kid will be sufficient. Very bad pickup. We need some better wrs.

Have fun trying to cover a 6″6 WR, it doesn’t matter if he ran a 4,8, you have NOBODY that can cover him, out jump him or anything! You can’t blitz, you can’t double team a CPJ team or you get burned. Put all your guys in the box and watch this kid catch bombs on your pathetic defense. I’m sure we will remember the names of your db’s as we watch them get made as fools trying to cover a 6′6 wr! We do have a WR who you need to worry about name BOSTIC! 4.39 SPEED AND ONE OF THE MOST EXPLOSIVE PLAYERS COMING OUT OF HIGHSCHOOL IN GEORGIA! Don’t worry, we have some speed for you in our offense. Tune into us this year as you chase us in the polls as you did all last year.

oh yeah were idiots all right…dominance head to head…won 7 of the last 8….5 first round draft picks to every 1 Tech has…2 Heisman winners to none…6 ten win seasons in 9 years…and before some Tech fan gets on the Bobby Dodd bandwagon and starts talking about number of national championships…we both have 1 since players started wearing facemasks…face it, this is a fine young man and Tech is lucky to have him; but, with your high school triple option offense (an offense btw which leads you to lose every bowl game and everytime you come off a teams bye-week..because, give the extra prep time and its easy to stop. The only reeason you have any success at all is, the offense is so outdated no one prepares for it unless they are playing Tech)but back to the point…with your high school offense, it doesn’t mnatter if he is 8ft 6…you throw the ball three times a game…hope he can block…oh and as far as last years polls go…your best team in 20 years faced our worst team in 10 years and managed to lose…and get gashed with a running game which had been suspect all year…I suppose we just hadn’t played a sorry enough defense…My suggestion for Tech is stick to engineering…you truly are one of the best in the country in that area…Tech is a very fine school…but, UGA with the exception of a couple of blips has always controlled this state as far as football goes…which in the south, is pretty dang far.

Welcome to the flats Greene. Could not find any film on the kid, but read that he has good hands and blocks out well. My guess is that is why CPJ went after him. If he is 6′4″ 200 lbs in high school then he could definitely beef up for college and be a good WR while blocking for the run. UGA fans that want to bash this kid are stupid and rely to much on rivals to tell them if they are going to have a good team. Do you think Richt recruited AJ Green because rivals or scout told him it was a good idea. I also don’t think Green would have been a good fit for GT as he is not going to put a DB on his back. GT fans trust in CPJ and don’t really care if UGA fans like who he recruits or not.
