FOOTBALL RECRUITING: Starr’s Mill WR Jeff Greene is commitment No. 10 for Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Starr's Mill WR Jeff Greene (Special)

Starr's Mill WR Jeff Greene (Special)

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson found the big and speedy wide receiver he needed for his offense when Starr’s Mill High’s Jeff Greene committed to the Yellow Jackets.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Greene picked Georgia Tech over Duke, Mississippi State, South Florida, Cincinnati, East Carolina and Middle Tennessee State. Greene is commitment No. 10 for Tech’s 2011 football recruiting class.

“I met with Coach Johnson for about an hour, and we talked about the recruiting process, how kids have until Feb. 2 to sign,” Greene said. “However, with Georgia Tech, it’s first-come, first-serve with the scholarships. I didn’t want to pass up on a good opportunity so I committed on the spot after being offered.”

“I’m excited about Georgia Tech. Coach Johnson is a winner, and has won everywhere he has coached. Georgia Tech has great academics, and a college degree from there will help you after football. And it’s close to home, which will allow my friends and family come to the games.”

Last year at Starr’s Mill, Greene caught 33 passes for 630 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was clocked at 4.61 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Greene was just beginning to attract big-time attention from college recruiters.

“Georgia Tech has like eight guys on their list at wide receiver that they are looking at,” Greene said. “Coach Johnson said the No. 1 guy out of Seattle would probably stay closer to home. They showed me the recruiting board, and my name was at No. 2 for wide receiver. That made me feel really good, that they thought that highly of me.”

Greene said after he committed, Johnson asked several questions to make sure that he was content with his decision. Greene confirmed to the coach that his mind was made up.

“[Johnson] said some people dog Tech out about its passing attack, how they have a reputation for being a running team,” Greene said. “He told me, ‘Jeff, don’t listen to those people. If you can do something with the football, we will find a way to get it it to you.’ He also told me if I really worked hard, that I would have the chance to play early.”

This coming from the clown trolling the tech blogs at 2am on a Saturday night?…I am a lifelong UGA fan…pretty significant donor also. Being a UGA fan doesn’t require one to be an idiot…I give credit where it is due. PJ has won ball games and he deserves his due…but please keep calling me fair weather…I graduated from UGA in the 1970s when the law school was still named the Lumpkin School of Law…I have continued to support our sports programs for decades. Nothing to prove to a troll such as yourself on an AJC blog.

I bet after this season, when we remind tech they lost *most* of their talent (besides that decent fullback , think his name is Nesbitt..) by running them out of Athens, you will be “All Dawg” right? What a loser. Go cheer for tee-ball, i hear *everybody wins* in that politically correct sport..

Boy it doesn’t get anymore better than that does it, big guy? Maybe you should do a little better research before you get on here and start calling people liars. Should I go ahead and hand you the dunce hat now big guy?

Furthermore, I was not trying to say that a hand injury caused his 40 time to be a 4.6, but it rather his not being able to compete in combines and camps because of it has caused scout sites to be unable to accurately update his 40 time. Moron.

@Everyone, it sounds like this kid was a good pickup for Georgia Tech. We’ll know more as his senior year progresses, but he’s a big kid with decent speed that has a lot of raw athleticism. For whatever reasons (HS offense, injuries, etc.), Jeff Greene was just beginning to show up on the recruiting radar. I would not be surprised at all if other ACC/SEC schools made some overtures in the next 3-4 months, especially if Jeff gets off to a good start to his senior year. As far as recruiting rankings, they are a lot of fun to debate, but they are not the final determination of a prospect’s worth at the collegiate level. Two of the NFL’s most accomplished WRs, Terrell Owens (Chattanooga) and Jerry Rice, were “Zero Stars.” NOW I’m not saying Jeff Greene will make it to the NFL, or even play a down in college, just that you never really know how a prospect will turn out. Jeff certainly has good potential.

Not trolling at all, simply responding to GTax for bringing UGA into this. Yeah, and i hear Doug Roberson graduated from UGA too. I bet you help him write his homeristic opinions of Tech , don’t you? And I don’t consider checking the sports news of the paper from a city 30 minutes down the road from me as “trolling”. And seeing that I am sitting right beside my beautiful wife, while she watches her DVR’d shows (Cake boss, Pit boss, and other various animal planet shows) I am extremely happy of what im doing at 2 am. this morning. At least im honest in my opinion. You, however, are probably all by your lonesome, and with your dwindling health and age, that is what is sad and pathetic. You should probably find a better use for your remaining time in this life.

So time for bed Grandpappy, you gotta get up at 4:30 am. anyway so you can beat the “rush” to BK for your free morning coffee. And I have a shirt that says “Atlanta Falcons training camp” but does that mean im in Flowery Branch competing for the short corner spot? No. You ever give it a thought that one of his more talented, more skilled friends brought him with him? Maybe a cousin? Doesn’t mean he was invited at all. Be sure you bring valid proof to the table before you run your mouth

I have lived quite a life and practiced as an attorney for 30+ years…dont regret anything in my life. You seem to be very young and immature in your postings…show some class son. Congrats on being married….I have been married for 37 years and my wife is still the same beautiful woman. Yes, as East Carolina, flash in the pan Cincy, the MIGHTY Duke, and contender Missouri State were coming on strong.. You two losers should just call each other on the phone and gush over this 3rd stringer, and leave the blogs alone. Especially you Y, we wouldn’t want you to get all riled up and give yourself a stroke. . If you could pull your head out of coach PB&J’s a $ $, you would see that the only *established* (if you can call him that) recruit that tech’s coach has conned into coming to the “flats”, is actually a transfer for Louisville.. Talk to me after this year and the next, when we see what “his” recruits actually do. Who recruits a 0 star RB to run the most important position in the offense (QB) anyway? Airyn Willis , anyone? Still displeased that Nick Marshall chose to star in our new D instead of being “the man” at tech for the next few years, aren’t you? Sounds like that young man has his head on correctly. I know 8 of 9 hurts, and even moreso the facts that you techies can’t refute, but your the ones looking foolish. Take the loss every year, and move along. Tasty Bee’s,

I was just proving a point that his recruitment was picking up by naming Ohio St. and UGA as interested parties. In fact, I find it very hard to believe that I am the one who is ill informed when you haven’t spoken one fact on here. I had more information and facts on this guy than the article states. I follow recruiting very closely and happen to know a good bit on a lot of Georgia recruits.

Until you get on here and name some facts about the guy other than call him “third stringer” and the like, your comments are nothing more than name calling and put downs which adds nothing the blog and by definition makes you a troll.

I was enriching the blog content with actual facts and I have backed up all of my facts of which you originally refuted, but you can’t even accept my arguments when I provide my sources.

You should probably go back to the UGA blogs. I wasn’t bringing in UGA for the sake of comparing GT to UGA, but stating that he was picking up interest by attending camps and Ohio State and UGA.

Also, you can’t knock his offer list. He was freaking hurt last year and didn’t go to combines and camps. His hand was broken and he is a WR! So just how the hell do you think he was going to amass a great offer list? He’s healthy now and luckily Paul Johnson was able to nab him before other school came calling.

This whole string is making me sick. “Tasty Bees,” you are rude and disrespectful. Your comments about Y are baseless and classless. There’ s simply no reason to treat people that way–and bragging on the Blog is just as unattractive as it is when done person-to-person. You do not represent the Dawg nation very well at all.

And Tech fans, this kid averaged ~20 ypc. That says something. He’s got size, which is a huge advantage–and speed may come as he gets into a collegiate S&C program. A good get for the Jackets, who seem to have picked him up just as his commitment process was heating up.

It’s hilarious watching this GTU fan with obviously too much time on his hands persistently make excuses for another one of Johnson’s scrub recruits. To them there is nothing this man can do wrong, but that will quickly change starting this season.

Let them have their fun while they can. The way Johnson is downgrading the talent of this roster, they are going to be fighting Duke for the basement in short order(they’re already fighting them for recruits!)

Nice pick up for Tech.
UGA, Bama, Ohio St, South Carolina were all evaluating him, he had broken hand while all the other recuits were at camp, explains why he’s behind on offers.

His size remind me of AJ Green. I hope he can take hits better then AJ.

His Speed is fine – Thomas came to Tech with 4.6+ time, left with 4.37 time

Hill will play a significant role for Tech. Ga didnt offer him quick enough so he went with Tech. He could have played significant time this season had he become a Dawg. One question —what will Nesbitt do after his career in college. If hed played a different position hed be sitting in the pros counting money. FYI—the pros dont run the option and rarely will they train a qb to play a different position. Hill would have gotten way more exposure not playing on a team with 90 percent running of the ball for plays. just saying—-I salute Nesbitt for what he has done. If the new 4.61 stick could put on 35 pounds and not go to a 4.8 hed have a chance. Hill will do some damage —I just think you can go unnoticed in a run all the time offense. And one last thank you to Bay Bay for dropping that ball against the Dawgs last year.
If manboobs would have just kept running it the bees would have won. God Bless and lets get ready to Rumble…….

Newsflash UGA fans bashing the kid, his 40 time, his offers etc. As Tech fans we could give a flying crap! He is exactly what Tech wants and needs. Big kid, can win the jump ball with good hands. By the time he hits the field be will be 215-220 and will have shaved a couple tenths off that 40 time. What do you have then? A 6-6, 220lb. reciever with a 4-4 forty who has good hand and blocks. Sounds like another 1st round pick to me. Doesn’t matter to Tech fans and more importantly Tech coaches how many stars or how many “big” offers a kid has. They want kids who want to be at Tech and fit what Tech does.

Bay Bay going in the first round is hard to dispute. Greene will see a lot of one on one with this offense taking the attention away from the pass. 4.6 is actually slow compared to the others but these tall guys seem to get faster as they mature. The fastest guy on the Tech team is a safety at 6′4″ and I bet you he was not that fast in high school at Marist. Also when you are one on one with a much shorter defender you get away with a lot if you have good hands and you are physical.

steverino

August 1st, 2010
9:49 am

4.6 isn’t slow. As far as getting ready to block…well, everyone knows that NFL WR’s don’t have to know how to block. Right? And lot’s of under 4.4 track guys can’t get open, can’t run clean routes, can’t catch, and can’t body up on cornerbacks. If everything else is sound, than 4.6 is PLENTY fast.

Again, when UGA gets a kid who doesn’t have like 30 offers he’s considered a steal, when Tech gets one, it’s because he’s a bad player. Yall are so predictable, you need some new material. This guy has been our #2 target for awhile, regardless of who offers him. He’s a great athlete, and a great kid, UGA fans are just jealous he’ll be jumping over your shrimp 5′9 and 5′10 corners.

GT , your reference to the “Marist” player, he ran a legit 4.4 in high school, this kid may be a great pick up who knows. I would like to see a link where Thomas runs a 4.37 40.

The Dawg fans on this blog wouldn’t know a legit 40 time if it bit them in the rear end. Just because there players are all magically sub-4.3 doesn’t mean the rest of the world needs to BS their times… Chad Walker, assistant football coach and head track coach at Starr’s Mill, knows how to time a legit 40. So I will take a real 4.6 over a fake 4.3 any day of the week. This is a huge pick up for a kid who’s obviously got size and a huge upside. Go Jackets!

As you can remember his 40 time is not a 4.3. The bottom line is if this kid knows how to get open, has great hands, and a heart, he will be a great player.
