NBA lottery pick Derrick Favors to get $19.3 million over four seasons — one year out of South Atlanta High

The lovefest between Derrick Favors and the New York area media officially tipped off when Favors was drafted No. 3 overall by the New Jersey Nets on Thursday. Favors, who turns 19 years old on July 15, projects to earn $19.3 million over five years, according to the NBA rookie salary scale.

Where will Derrick Favors be in five years?

Here are some highlights:

  • The New York Times had a bunch of one-liners on Favors, who is the first player addition under the new owner of the Nets, Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorow. Wrote the Times: “‘I’m open to learning Russian,’ Favors said, letting everyone know what he didn’t study during his one year in college.” The Times also explained the New Jersey draft logic, saying “the Nets opted for the most athletic frontcourt player available but the one considered the least NBA ready.”
  • ESPN gave major props to Favors college coach. “Georgia Tech has been a pipeline to the pros in recent years, a weigh station where NBA prospects quickly develop their raw talent under Paul Hewitt, then move on,” wrote ESPN blogger Kevin Arnovitz.
  • The New York Daily News rehashed the draft woes of the Nets: “On May 18, the Nets finished third in the draft lottery despite going in with the best odds to win the No. 1 pick. That killed their dream of drafting [Kentucky PG John Wall], the most dynamic player in the draft, who many feel would have given the Nets their best chance to land LeBron James this summer. Still, Favors could help the Nets recover from last season’s debacle. He is considered a superb athlete who can get off the floor quickly to block shots and rebound. He is also a solid shooter with a soft touch on his hook shot.”
  • Nets coach Avery Johnson gave heavy praise to Favors, comparing him to another Atlanta NBA product. Johnson told the New Jersey Star-Ledger, “We just absolutely loved this young man, we think he has a great upside. We think potentially if he can put on another 15 more pounds, we have a Dwight Howard with … not only power, but some finesse, a great touch around the basket. So we think he’s explosive — if you look at his calves and rear end and base, he’s really good. He’s strong down there. We’re going to get him stronger in the upper body, but we’re really excited about this young man.” The newspaper also quoted an anonymous NBA team official not from the Nets, who offered the skinny of Favors: “His jumper needs some work, but a few changes in his technique will show a real benefit. Right now there’s no finesse — he’ll just keep pounding away at you. But once he gets some, he’s going to have a big-time career. I love him. He’s a total stud.”

  • The Canadian Press wrote in the headlines that “Nets grad power forward Derrick Favours.” Evidentially, Favors’ last name is spelled differently in Canada. CP also reported that “Favours [was] the youngest American in the draft,” quoting him as saying “Now I have to grow up and grow up fast, and get ready to play against some of the top players in the world.”

Mr. Carvell, the correct metaphor is “way station” not “weigh station.”

The NBA should adopt the Major League Baseball system: draft players right out of high school, but if they elect to attend college instead of the minor leagues, then they’re ineligible to be drafted until after their junior year. System makes a lot more sense for everyone than the “one-and-done” idiocy that’s now being propagated.

I think the bigger story should be that Lawal should of stayed for his senior year! Im glad GT finally has some good guards that will be more than 1 or 2 year players.

I’ll tell you who can’t coach……Mark Richt! That bum gets a top five or ten class EVERY year and has nothing to show.

The only team that has equal talent to Ugay on a consistent basis is Florida, and look at those results! What a coach!

I AM HAPPY FOR DERRICK, BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE….PAUL HEWITT HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!!!! IN FACT, HE MADE IT IN SPITE OF BLEWITT, NOT BECAUSE OF HIM!

I like Favors, and thought in 1-2 more could be a top player in the country. New Jersey took a huuuggge chance going for a raw talent, and many a coach had a short career based on potential. Favors wasn’t a dominant player, and one his size, he should have been. FSU’s inside player’s dominated him twice, so think about the players in the NBA and he’s in an up hill struggle.

Urban Meyer doesn’t have to be there mentally to beat the sh#t out of Ugay. That just comes too easy.

The reason you go to college is to position yourself for a better life in the future. Well, he’s well positioned now! And he was able to do it in one year instead of 4, or 5 , or 6. For all of the criticism, he has his future all lined up, while those who are criticising him will never top his earning potential. I believe that’s the rub for most of the haters, they see kids from the hood(who they hate), not going to class to take calculus and management standards, getting contracts for millions and millions of dollars per year, compared to their thousands, even with their so-called superior Ga Tech diplomas. It hurts them to their hearts, to know someone prefers these kids to them. Well life isn’t fair, get over it, even if he blows his money, it’s his to blow!

He should have stayed in school so Tech could have been knocked out of the first round again. Where is the loyalty?

I don’t know Derrick Favors but I certainly would not compare him in ANY way to kids that enroll at GT and stick it through to earn a degree in 4, 5, or 6 years. Derrick Favors showed up and played basketball, and there’s not much evidence he did anything else. He took advantage of the existence of the school and the school took advantage of his presence to advance their athletic image and name recognition. I’m not convinced higher learning ever entered into the exchange.

Derrick Favors is getting paid for his raw athletic ability and potential as a basketball player. Whether or not he ever attended GT or played a single game for them is completely irrelevant in this payoff; as long as he remained healthy he was going to get drafted and paid. He now has to prove his worth as a professional athlete and human being. I hope someday he earns his money.

As a Tech grad from ‘73, I’m dismayed seeing a RAT make good, getting 19.3 million over 5 yrs. A RAT is a neophyte. I guess Tech was nothing more than a pit stop for Favors. Nothing but pit, and now nothing but Net.
