FOOTBALL Recruiting: It’s UGA or FSU for former AJC Super 11 linebacker transferring from Southern Cal (UPDATED)

  • BREAKING NEWS: Will UGA’s Mark Richt add another “Dream Team” member? Tucker LB to announce between UGA and Georgia Tech, three others (Click here)

Former AJC Super 11 member Jarvis Jones, who was granted a scholarship release from Southern Cal coach Lane Kiffin, will transfer to UGA or Florida State.

If UGA lands Jarvis Jones, do you think it will help the Bulldogs with recruiting other Carver-Columbus football superstars?

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Jones will make recruiting trips to both schools within the next few weeks and likely decide by the end of the month, according to his high school coach.

Jones was one of the nation’s top linebacker prospects out of Carver-Columbus High, signing with USC over UGA, Florida, and LSU in February 2009. Last season, Jones was a reserve linebacker for Southern Cal last year as a freshman, registering 13 total tackles in 8 games. He suffered a neck sprain against Oregon and missed the final five games. He was not cleared by doctors to participate in Southern Cal’s spring practices under Kiffin.

How is the neck? Will Jones be given medical clearance to return to football? Carver coach Dell McGee said Jones was examined by several independent physicians, who determined that Jones could play again.

“He sought other opinions from other doctors,” McGee said. “Those other doctors said they would clear him if they were the active team doctor.”

McGee also confirmed to the AJC that both UGA and Florida State’s medical staff will examine Jones’ neck as part of a routine physical during his recruiting trips. Jones will also file a petition with the NCAA to play in the 2010 season.

Carver is a popular stop with college recruiters, as a pair of rising seniors — tailback Isaiah Crowell and defensive tackle Gabriel Wright — are also considered among the nation’s best at their respective positions. If UGA or FSU lands Jones, would it help either school with Crowell, Wright and other Carver players?

Could

Could JJ be the start of a Carver "package deal' for UGA or FSU? (AJC)

“I think all of those kids making those decisions are doing it because it’s a good fit for them … it’s not because any players are there,” McGee said. “Now I’m not saying that won’t happen. But I think the biggest thing before any kid makes a commitment is how he and his family feel about the school they are choosing.”

What is the latest on Crowell and Wright? McGee said both visited Auburn on Thursday, along with other Carver players.

Jones kept the nation’s until suspense on signing day of his senior year. Will Crowell and Wright do the same? Wait until February to reveal their college choice? “Right now, there’s a possibility they could do it at one of the [December] all-star games or signing day, they just don’t know right now,” McGee said. “They could do it tomorrow or wait until signing day. That’s up to them on when they want to make their decisions.”

One last note on JJ: He left Southern Cal before the football program was pounded by NCAA sanctions on Thursday. A major factor in Jones signing with USC was the presence of Trojans linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. , who left with Pete Carroll for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks in January.

Southern Cal freshman-to-be, WR Markeith Ambles of Henry County, is thinking about transferring and a decision could come in the next day or two, according to GAVarsity’s Brendan Cosgrove. Ambles enrolled early at USC in January. Georgia Tech offered Ambles out of high school, while UGA did not.

You Thug-Dawgs have lured a recruit that was originally lured by Lane Kiffen?

May as well bring him on by the Detention Center and let me process him at the start – it will be the most efficient use of time for all of us.

See you soon, Mr. Latest and Greatest Recruit.

Ole Dog, Your comments make plenty of sense. The majority of folks that want these kids to play despite their attitudes and actions are the same ones who get to read about arrest records as a result. UGA does not owe them a damned thing except a chance for an education and a chance to better themselves for their future. If a kid doesn’t appreciate that golden opportunity for a free college education he has no business tying up a schlorship other kids could be deserving of. If it looks and sounds like a duck then it probably is a duck. Hope UGA will learn to stay away from so many street hoodlum types whose interest seems to be imitating pro hoodlums setting poor examples. This statement is no way meant to demean any race or nationality. It is meant in the spirit of if the shoe fits then wear the damned thing.

Richt is complete no-nonsense. He will help these guys not only make it to the NFL when the talent is there but moreso off the field to teach these kids life lessons.

Welcome to Athens and looking forward to making it 9 out of 10 against tech this year!

Go find a Tide board to post on. We don’t care about your observations and opinions. Bama has a couple of good seasons and they forget all about the Shula and Mike Price years. Get ready, the NCAA is coming after Bama and the sanctions you get are going to make the Trojans look like a walk in the park.

It is amazing how simple some things are and how you guys can’t follow the numbers. (1) Jones had a neck sprain and they found some degree of stenosis, i.e., an excuse for Kiffin to get rid of the kid (2) Kiffin has known for some time the NCAA sanctions were coming and he was going to lose a boat load of scholarships, (3) with the current state of USC football, Kiffin needs to recruit healthy studs that can come in and fill “immediate need positions” on the roster. JJ didn’t come in and win a starting position as a freshman or significant playing time, so he’s out.

In this pared down squad, Kiffin will have to jettison some really good athletes so he can roll the dice and try to recruit the very best. If not, USC doesn’t have the depth to compete for the next 4-6 years.

Simple as 1, 2, 3. Look for more of the same scenario from Kiffin in the next couple of years.

Any kid that would buy into the Lane Kiffin show does not belong at UGA. It says a lot about his persona to chose Kiffin and that thug program over his other offers. Might want to stay away from him.

Rumor has it that Lemay was fooling around with a guy instead of a girl. When the news of his same sex partner came out, TECH immediately offered a scholarship while UGA withdrew their scholarship. Tech’s AD: “the new news about the Butler QB makes us think he would be an excellent addition to the tech student body.” Kids are pumped at North Avenue.

Regarding this post from some Brat calling himself “Diamond Dog” something or another.

Talking about academic ineligibility?

I guess you forgot the Jam Kemp and the blatant inappropriate academic issues during the only golden era of football at UGA.

Ask just about anyone who played ball there during the early 80’s about “Developmental Studies”….

Just ask anyone who played football at Georgia Tech from 1893 – 2009 and the current ones there about “Course study guides.” Athletes are issued a study guide at the beginning of each class and all they have to do is not lose it; then turn it in at the end to receive a passing grade.

At least try to sound like you’re a grown man when you post publicly. Anyone here notice the whiney, bratty tone of these posts?

I love these bulldawg fans talking about NCAA violations. Vince Dooley and UGA wrote the BOOK on NCAA infractions. If it not be for the good old boy network, your football program would have been shut down to the many violations that happened on Vince’s watch. Good Grief, UGA fans get a grip!

Techies or whatever the hell you Tech fans call yourselves, can’t wait to see that proposed opened up passing game to further bolster your running attack. While I admit your qb can take some hard licks I wonder how much could his passing skills have improved from last year. He’s tough but didn’t have the impression he could throw with accuracy or consistency. Of course our qb didn’t last year either but hopeful the new kids can. Congratulations on your preseason rankings because ………the day of reckoning will come again when the Dawgs play you. And you know this is true.

When looking at insults from GT fans, remember, they are more afraid of UGA now than the last 9 years. For the first time under CMR, GT will be facing a UGA D that is run by a former NFL D-line coach and as well as a former NFL DC.

They don’t run the option in the NFL because it’s too easy to defend; it doesn’t stand a chance of working. You defend the option with FAST players playing fundamentally sound assignment football.

Sound familiar? It is what Grantham, Belin, and Lakatos have been preaching since they arrived. UGA will blow out GT this November and for many Novembers to come.

Other than QBs, can anyone think of a transfer who turned out to be a real stud for his new team? There’s probably a few, but outside of the quarterback position it’s a rare occurrence. I don’t think a kid who’s otherwise comfortable at his school or happy with his playing prospects transfers just because his school is on probation. Beware.

Tim’s right. A burglary arrest didn’t stop Tony Joiner from starting at safety for UF during the ‘07 WLOCP, so this DUI won’t even be a blip on the radar as long as this Hammond is a contributor.

It WAS satisfying watching Mikey Henderson and MoMass torch Joiner and the rest of the UF secondary all game long, though.

For those who are commenting on Markeith Ambles in a negative way, you really have no idea as to what you are talking about. He never beat up a teacher, do you think a young black athlete in the state of GA could have gotten away with such an act? Come now don’t support the rumor mill! He is not a thug in any manner just a young kid with alot of talent ready to expose it and loves life. Too many hater fans on here. I know first hand the situation with Ambles, went through the whole recruiting process
