Tennessee football recruit Da’Rick Rogers had ‘a lot of bad dealings with UGA coaches’ before switch, according to QB Nash Nance
11:59 pm June 7, 2010, by Michael Carvell
Why did Calhoun wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers, the state’s No. 1-rated football prospect, make the last-minute switch from UGA to Tennessee last February?
Rogers isn’t talking, but his high school quarterback provided some insight into the infamous flip, according to the Knoxville News-Sentinel.
“The [UT] coaches are a lot more professional … He had a lot of bad dealings with Georgia coaches,” said Nash Nance told the newspaper.
Nance and Rogers both signed with Tennessee, and enrolled in summer classes last week. Neither Nance nor the News-Sentinel disclosed any specifics on the “bad dealings.”

Da'Rick Rogers (left) isn't talking but QB Nash Nance is (AJC)
Here are a few other items of interest from the article:
- After Rogers changed his mind, Nance and his father “got crucified a lot on the Internet.” Nance said both he and Rogers got death threats, but neither called the police. ”Da’Rick and I both got a lot of Facebook messages and wall posts that were insane. Nothing was ever serious – I don’t think.”
- Calhoun coach Hal Lamb supported and defended his players after they both switched schools, even if he was privately disappointed, according to Nance — who was committed to Vanderbilt before flipping to Tennessee. Nance said Lamb is very close to Vanderbilt’s football staff. Also, Lamb’s father, Ray Lamb, is UGA’s coordinator of high school relations. “I’m sure they all wanted Da’Rick to go to Georgia,” Nance said. “But [Hal Lamb] was real accepting of the fact that we signed with Tennessee. I don’t know about his dad. He’s a little different breed than our coach.”
- Nance knew that Rogers both liked Tennessee and was reconsidering his pledge to sign with UGA, but says he wasn’t sure about Rogers flipping to the Vols until signing day. ”It wouldn’t have surprised me if he would have pulled out a Richmond scholarship, signed it and gone there,” Nance told reporter Dave Hooker of the News-Sentinel.
Update: Both Hal and Ray Lamb, along with UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner, could not be reached for comment on Monday. UGA spokesman Claude Felton told the AJC that UGA’s coaches are out of the office at camps this week, but was confident that Garner and the elder Lamb would not comment in response to Nash’s accusations. What about Da’Rick? He appears to be keeping a low profile, doing his public speaking via Twitter.

Most of you children on here are simply too young and inexperienced to know that SC’s Heisman ,George Rogers was from the Duluth, Ga area. He was recruited by UGA and SC’s RAY GOFF. He signed with and won the Heisman for SC. We faced him two or three times and I believe UGA won two and they got one. I personally was at the game in 80 or 81 when UGA won. Great game and I was on the 50, lower level near the track, behind the UGA bench.
My point? You win some and you lose some, you guys. Geeeeeeeez. UGA lands it’s share and last year we got Marvelous Marlon Brown and such is life. Brown, is of course from Memphis ……. TN, for you public school kids.
UGA will be fine and besides, who at UT will get the ball to this kid? His QB pal will probably never play a down and that is that. Ratavoius Wooten, Chris Durden and Brown and Charles and the two tight ends Lynn and Wiggins? will be gravy. How about AJ and King and Troupe and one or two others at receiver??
Go Dogs.

UGA athletes are just hired hands, not legitimate student-athletes. Every UGA recruit should be informed of UGA’s “use ‘em and lose ‘em” practice. Maybe they would have second thoughts about going to a school that cares so little for them.
Obviously, Da’Rick wised up in the nick of time.

Everyone in the country watched what played out and watched how UGA coaches kept his offer on the table with all that was going on. Apparently some kids were more worried about their off field activities than with their school work and becoming better players. It’s not like either became better at state or in the allstar game. So what was unprofessional? Responsible coaches looking out for a recruits best interest and not catering to his every want.

Nash…If it were not for your father that bought some turf, you would not have been a starter in high school. If if were not for Da’Rick Rogers, no one would have heard of you outside your small hometown. If you would like to accomplish something on your own merits, start by not being critical of others, such as the UGA coaches that offered your friend a free education at one of the best universities in the United States. Nash, your 15 seconds of fame is most likely over. Good manners will take you places your dad’s money will not. Grow up. It is not all about you.

Death threats to some of your own……you stay classy DAWG Fans!!! My god, can this story go away. First off, all the UGA fans saying Nance will never play in the SEC need to get a clue. If UT’s OC (Chaney) who has coached 2 Super Bowl Champion QB’s saw a need to offer him a scholly, I will trust his evaluation over any tard in this comment section. On to Da’Rick, does anyone really think for a moment that Dooley will take any lip from this kid??? If he acts up fine, he’s gone & UT has a stable of other WR’’s to throw to.

Nashy baby, why are you dogging out the UGA coaches is it because you and your daddy didn’t get an offer from UGA and it pissed you off. We all know the reasons you didn’t get offered by UGA and we know all the reasons you got offered by UT, the first being because you suck as a QB and the reason you got offered by UT is because your daddy promised them the Da’Brick. Why don’t you spend less time dogging out UGA coaches and more time sucking off of daddy’s hind tit and being a liar, seems to be what you’re good at, glad you’re at UT don’t need crybabies like you anyway…

Nance transferred from Darlington for his Sr. year. Calhoun’s previous QB made all-state as a juniour and decided to skip football and concentrate on baseball, believe his last name is Johnson.
Kiffin did not want him but Dooley was willing to take a package deal as Nance did not have his heart in the ‘Dores. Apparently there is a bond between Nance and Rogers.
Richt, apparently, was not willing to make the same deal. Rogers is the real deal, saw him play 5 times, and I can tell the goods. Nance is not near the overall QB that Jaybo Shaw is and he will be a benefit for Georgia Southern.
To me it would have been worth the two scholarship deal to get Rogers. He is better than Marlon Brown but not AJ Green. It would not be the first combo deal ever made at UGA. We got the Luckie trips (well worth all three scholies) in the day.
Got to be able to read a transcript, Jalen Fields could not get in and we could have used that for Nash and then got him back in 1 or 2. Sorry Jalen. Others gave up too, Mettie, etc.

First off anyone with a brain knows how this deal went down. Da”Rick got used and this fall will get abused. Some red and black to look for are Vance Cuff, Brandon Boykin and Bacarri Rambo. Get ready to visit the hospital Da’Rick. Also, Nash…………..they’ve been known to lay some licks on the sidelines so you’d best stand back behind the coaches with that clipboard and water bottles. Just keep running that mouth because UT has nothing.

NO STORY.
Why print the story, when you have NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING to report ?
I have been saying this all along, that the recruits on OFFENSE in this State of GEORGIA must be interviewed and find out why they ALL signed with RIVAL SEC schools 2010 ?
We KNOW it is the Offensive Coaching Staff, ALL coaching positions they did NOT play in the arena themselves, a former QB coaching Tight Ends, a great former Running Back coaching wide receivers, and our own former Wide Receiver coaching Running Backs when it was his Dad, not he who was 1 of our own Best Running Backs in the history of UGA Bulldogs’ Football.
In the Coach Richt Era, we have failed to score more than 2 Touchdowns in 38 games, and Lost 27 of those. We threw the football only 2 times to Branden Smith and only 2 times to Marlon Brown, the 2 highest rated football players on our recruiting class last year. We average 21 fumbles per year every year for the last 4 years, # 96 NCAA average ranked for the last 4 years in Penalties, and 14 interceptions per year average every year of the last 4 years, and we signed none of the Offensive Players in this State of Georgia in 2010.
Why is this ?
Again, I ask that each and every single recruit be asked this question. Why did you not choose UGA ? The revealing answers tell the STORY.
This story does NOT.
Try again. Go get the answer.

Let me get this straight. We signed NONE of the Offensive Recruits in this State of Georgia 2010, but according to you, Nash Nance wasn’t any good because he was only offered scholarships by West Virginia, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, UCF Central Florida Knights, UT-C, Harvard and the Tennessee vols.
Friday June 4, 2010 we got a commitment from Wide Receiver Zach Witchett who was only offered scholarships by West Virginia, Toledo, Minnesota and Maryland.
DISNEYdawgs.com you make EXCUSES that hold no water. This is our latest commitment Zach Witchett. If this is the knock on Nash Nance, then isn’t it germane that if you measure our latest football recruit commitment by YOUR SAME MEASURE, that you have NOTHING TO SAY on the matter ?
You make a comment about our rival, Tennessee vols, but leave yourself open to the same comment being applied to our own most recent football recruit commitment. Don’t you ?
Which is it ? The vols’ recruit is no good because only West Virginia, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, UCF Central Florida Knights, UT-C, Harvard and the Tennessee vols offered Nash Nance a scholarship or UGA football recruit is no good because only Georgia, West Virginia, Toledo, Minnesota and Maryland offered Zach Witchett a scholarship ?

Man there’s alot of hate on this board. And alot of ignorance. Constantly seeing comparisons of Kiffin to Richt. NEWSFLASH: Kiffin is no longer the coach at UT! As for Dooley and his record, he took LA Tech to their first bowl win since the 70’s, AND he acted as Athletic Director. Dude is smart. As for Nash never seeing the field, I bet he does, but not for the right reasons. He’ll make the travel roster, simply because we need a 3rd QB. With our inexperienced line, I don’t expect our QB’s to last long this year. If he can take a snap and hand off, he’ll play. If anything, we could use a holder on kicks lol. Just chalk all this up as karma. We lost Marlon because they didn’t like Orgeron (trust me, we don’t like him either). You guys lost Rogers because he didn’t like something about your staff. It happens. Just don’t see why you bash his character now, but when he was committed to UGA he was the second coming. BTW, should be a great game between the hedges this year. No predictions, just wanna see a hard fought ball game. Peace ya’ll.

Gator Bob: ALBERT Haynes?? Really? Albert Hayes? You worry about FL and post on their blogs and leave UGA blogs to UGA people. And if you had ever seen Nance play, you would know that the words “Manning” and “Nash” never belong in the same sentence.
BuLLdawg, I think the reason that Nance is getting such a bad rap here is that he actually is no good. Really. He has a wealthy father and that’s about it. Ever seen him actually play? In person? Would you know a good QB if he had a bell around his neck? But I digress. He’s no D-1 QB. Period. I promise. Never would have seen the field at Vandy, either.
But actually, in your deal with the Disney guy, it is you who’s argument holds no water on comparing offers of Nance and Witchett. Nance never got an offer from TN until his dad packaged him with Da who ever.
On the other hand, Witchett had told everyone that would listen since he was 8 that he was going to be a Georgia Bulldog if he ever had the opportunity. It is/was common knowledge that other than the requisite propaganda sent to all recruits to gauge interest, there was no reason to seriously recruit Witchett.
As far as your spill about not getting any offensive players from the state in 2010, I think a little dose of common sense would help whatever it is that ails you. Unless it is someone like Witchett who just bleeds some schools colors and is going there no matter what, MOST recruits go where they feel they will get the most playing time, period. Georgia had them stacked up like cord wood on offense and those people didn’t see much PT (Playing Time)coming there way in the near future. HS all stars aren’t really all that interested in the other PT (Pine Time). And I don’t know, it’s just a guess, but it COULD be the reason Brandon Smith only had two passes last year was because he plays defense. Just sayin. But he did run several reverses. As far as Marlon is concerned, he just wasn’t good enough ye. to beat out the other receivers, plus all the talented TE’s compete for the ball. Plus Joe had a tendency to throw a good many to the wrong team. There’s just so many passes to go around. After the AJ and TK and then the second team get theirs, the TE’s get theirs, and then last year the other team got a lot, there just aren’t that many balls to go around. You say well if he’s not that good we shouldn’t have signed him? Were we fooled as far as his ability? If so, we were fooled in good company with every other major D-1 program who begged him to sign. I will also say that he won’t get much more this year. T King was as highly recruited as AJ and is only a notch below him. Chris Durham will be back this year and he’ll never get ahead of him. So things are crowded at WR in Athens. The TE’s will be even better and there are only so many passes to go around. Ad to that the fact that with the new QB Georgia probably won’t be throwing as many total passes unless this defense falls apart and they are behind all the time.
So, it’s actually your arguments that never hold water. But I do give you credit for trying to employ lots of creative spin on the facts you present. Ever consider looking into a job with the current White House administration?

Now who was this that thought Da whateverhisnameis was the second coming? Certainly no one that lives in the area he is from and knows, that’s for sure. Lets not go overboard. I’d say that there is a chance that HE might never see the field at UT unless it’s the very beginning of this year. He has to stay in school and he has to change his ways. The Nances are a proud, boastful family. It’s all about look at me! Watch me! Did you hear about Nash? The reason for the bitter feelings toward UGA is simple, they would not offer Nash a scholarship! The Nance family has always, always been HUGE UGA supporters. Mike tried to work out a deal with UGA to get Nash a scholarship. Da’rick was already committed to UGA, so Mike could not use him as leverage to get a deal for Nash. The conversation probably went something like this, “Why would we offer Nash a scholarship when we already have Rogers and Nash would never see the field?” Obviously, Tennessee was more than willing to negotiate. Does anyone really think Nance would have gotten a scholarship to Tennessee without Da’rick’s commitment? I seriously doubt it. It was a stretch to believe that Nash could play quarterback at Vanderbilt. I don’t blame Nash for wanting to go to UT, it just doesn’t smell right. Someone please discuss this with me. GO VOLS!!!
