St. Pius DB Geno Smith has early scholarship offer from Auburn, one of Georgia’s top football prospects for 2012

(This is part of the AJC’s “30 in 30″ series — with quick hits on top high school football teams across the metro area and state during spring football practice. We’re doing 30 football teams in 30 days. Click here for a master list. Hey AJC, what about spring sports? You know, the non-football sports? Go here)

St. Pius has one of the Georgia’s top cornerbacks in Geno Smith, a rising junior who already holds an early scholarship offer from Auburn.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound is considered a “true cover corner” and an impact player on the St. Pius defense, which heavily contributed to the team’s 12-1 record last year — which tied for the most wins in a season in school history.

Smith had 44 tackles, along with 2 interceptions and 7 pass breakups, as he was rarely challenged by opposing quarterbacks. Along with Auburn, Smith also has early offers from Louisville and Virginia Tech. He is also under consideration from numerous other SEC and ACC schools.

How was spring practice at St. Pius? The Golden Lions were one of the state’s first teams to go through it, so early that you could call it “winter” practice. It was held in January because of a lack of field space due to the impending spring sports.

St. Pius has to replace four offensive lineman, both defensive ends, and two running backs. Here are some of the top returning players:

Jack Marsau, LB: 89 tackles last years.

Kip Bray, OL: Will move from center to tackle.

St. Pius RB George Kennedy (AJC)

St. Pius RB George Kennedy (AJC)

George Kennedy: Only returning RB, will also play some DB.

Collier Williams, OL: Moving from guard to tackle.

Trey White, QB: Big surprise as sophomore last year, with 134 carries for 938 yards and 10 TDs, along with completing 39 of 68 passes for 663 yards and 9 TDs.

Alex Avant, FS: Another member of stellar defensive secondary.

Selwyn Mallah, SS: Hard hitter had 24 tackles last year.

if
the O Line and D Line-including the defensive
end positions-come together and we find that
guy who can take the fullback position I
believe we can make another run at the
Region Championship, but there are several
very good football teams in our region and the
four teams that come out of our region will
have played a very tough schedule.”

“If the (offensive and defensive line positions) come together and we find that guy who can take the fullback position, I believe we can make another run at the region championship,” St. Pius coach Paul Standard said.

Team: St. Pius Golden Lions

Last year’s record: 12-1

Starters lost: 11

Head coach: Paul Standard

Michael – he also holds offers from Virginia Tech and Louisville. Georgia and Alabama may be close as well.

St. Pius beat Marist twice in a row, so Marist took them off their schedule . . . War Chicken!

War Chicken – Would you expect anything less from the great Coach Chadwick?????

UGA – are you going to let another top recruit leave the state?

Get A life War Chicken. Learn the facts. Since YOU-St. PIUS- dropped down to 3A and Marist stayed in 4A they are now in two different regions (evidently that is not obvious to some). With the new region realignment, Marist is forced to play in a larger region, which has been known as the Baby SEC for years, and thus has region commitments so there is no room for additional games. So get over yourself. Get a ring and then we can talk, 1968 was a long time ago.

War Eagle – Yes, Pius dropped to AAA (where they legitimately should have been all along). Yes, Marist remained in AAAA (choosing to play up from where they would legitimately be classified) and they play in a difficult region. So what? They still have room on their schedule for non-region games and a loss to Pius wouldn’t affect the region standings since it would be a non-region loss. The fact is the great coach Chadwick has no backbone. He loved the Pius/Marist rivalry when it was one sided in his favor. Now that Pius is fielding competitive teams he wants no part of it.

War Eagle – As you suggested to an earlier poster, get your facts straight. Marist DOES NOT play in a larger region than St. Pius. Marist plays in 6-AAAA which is a 12 team region while Pius plays in 5-AAA which contains 14 teams. Both teams have non-region games on their schedule.

Geno is great character and hard worker any college will do well to have him on their roster. He is also a stud ball carrier. Im sure Marist also remembers him taking it to the house with about a minute left this past year just to add some icing to the cake.

Don’t know how Marist got drug into this conversation since the
article is supposed to be about a Pi High DB receiving a scholarship
offer from Auburn.
Marist, by the way, bites the Big One.

Geno locked down the likes of Antonio Goodwin, Zach Witchett, Julian Horton, Damian Swann, and Lamar Zanders… he was possibly the best lock down corner in the state last year, as a sophomore.

This young kid is being raised by a single mother Gina Matias. She is a Pi High graudate! They are very humble and love each other immensely. He listens to his mom! She is leading him tthrough spiritly, academically and she recognized he was a born athlete having physical strength, skill and endurance at the age of four years old.Congratulate this kid! Don’t allow this one offer cause you to make unkind comments about the schools, coaches, etc. This kid is a sophormore. Stay focused and mannerly Geno Matias Smith ! Gina R. Matias I remember the Pi High days.Congratulations to you and your kid!

AUBURN IS HEADING NORTH WITH TROOPER TAYLOR DOWN THERE. THEY ARE NOT AT THE CHAMPIONSHIP LEVEL LIKE ALABAMA AND FLORIDA. MEYER AND SABAN ARE GREAT COACHES. THIS KID WILL NOT PLAY FOR AN AVERAGE PROGRAM LIKE GEORGIA.

Yes I’m a Marist Dad but like Pius so was interested in the article. Why a Pius knucklehead has to bring Marist into the article is baffling. To set the record straight, Marist does not have an open slot, which is why they’re not playing this year. To say Chadwick would shy away from Pius is laughable, and true Pius fans know it. And BTW, Pius is a AAA school that whined its way down to AAA. Marist is a AA school still playing up two classifications. And we’re ducking Pius? Pleeez!

I didn’t believe it until I looked on the SPX website. Marist off the schedule. Congratulations to Pius. They did it the right way and deserve the satisfaction of knowing they never backed down despite losing all those years.

Hey “Spurrier”. The class is established by the GHSA according to student enrollment. However, the school is given the option of moving up classifications but can’t move down. Pius whined for years about the 1 1/2 rule that made them move up a class (guess I’ll have to explain the 1 1/2 rule to you as well) and how it was unfair they had to play up one class to AAAA. Now that they eliminated the 1 1/2 rule, Pius immediately moved down. Marist, a AA school according to enrollment, chose to stay in AAAA. And won nine, that’s nine, state championships last year. Nuff said.

SPX plays in the class according to enrollement – duh, marist fan. You don’t
need to explain the 1 1/2 rule to anyone, although we all know you could – so, good for you!
marist chose to play up – great – who cares, really??????????
