Is Isaiah Crowell of Carver-Columbus the best running back in the USA?

Where will all-world RB Isaiah Crowell sign?

At least one recruiting service thinks Crowell is among the nation’s elite, with Scout ranking the 6-foot, 215-pounder as No. 2 in the country.

Last year as a junior, Crowell rushed for 1,907 yards and 22 TDs on 175 carries. He also caught 18 passes of 241 yards and 3 TDs. He has more than 40 scholarship offers, with Alabama and Georgia as his leaders, according to CUTigers.com.

The recruiting services — and colleges — always love high school running backs from Georgia. Last year, the national lovefest was with M.L. King’s Mack Brown (signed with Florida), who didn’t come anywhere close to meeting his enormous expectations, partly due to a nagging leg injury.

Ironically, Crowell and Brown have a lot in common as running backs. Both are speedsters, a threat to score from anywhere on the field. Crowell is a little bit bigger and stronger than Brown was before his senior year, while Brown has an edge over Crowell with his shiftiness in the open field, along with more raw speed. Like Brown, Crowell doesn’t appear to have much interest in blocking, at least in high school.

Predictions on Carver vs. LaGrange?

You can pretty much bank on Crowell having a monster senior year. He is surrounded by far more talent at Carver, therefore defenses won’t be able to key completely on him, as they did with Brown this past season.

Carver defensive tackle Gabriel Wright (6-2, 265) has nearly as many offers as Crowell, while offensive tackle Quincy McKinney (6-3, 300) is closing fast with offers from Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Duke and Michigan State, among others.

Dell McGee, Carver’s coach, is expecting breakout seasons from a few other players:

Justin Brown, OL, 6-2, 270: “He will be the vocal leader of our offensive line and adds a lot of experience and accountability to the unit.”

Dequindre Adams, WR, 5-11, 190: “He was hampered by a hamstring injury last year. He has speed to burn, and we are expecting a lot of explosive plays … and will have opportunities due to our run game.”

Trey Simpson, DT, 6-0, 270: “He will be the vocal leader on the defensive line, and is just one piece to a talented defensive front.”

Who ever gets Crowell Bama or Georgia both fan bases can pull for each other after playing its 3 biggest rivals AU,UT and the gators. Crowell would probably get more carries at Georgia than Bama, but no way will he beat out Trent Richardson at Alabama and Mark Ingram will leave for NFL after the 2010 season. It will be very interesting who Crowell picks to play for next season!! RTR

Regardless of where he goes…does it really matter? The only team in the Southeast that truly runs the ball is in Atlanta and they still mostly rely on a bevy of backs to carry the ball. Bama does run the ball but overall the tailback position is becoming much less important because of the pass happy offenses mostly ran today. Glad he is ranked highly, but overall the position does not mean anywhere near the prestige they once held.

ncaa fan you must never watch bama or uga play. both are balanced attacks that rely on the run to set up the pass. just because tech runs the ball 80% of the time doesn’t mean other schools are lacking. they are run happy just like most spreads are pass happy.

The best in the USA? Please…he isn’t even the best in the State. SCOUT ranks their guys based on their performance at those showcases. Lets see that “MONSTER” senior season and then we’ll revisit.

NCAAFan….cant speak for UGA because I dont watch them often, but BAMA has always been a team that based their offense on a strong running game. There is a reason Ingram won the Heisman and that we had 2 RB’s that combined for almost 2500 yards last season. They are both back with a very good RS freshman in Eddie Lacy. Not to mention we are still recruiting several elite backs. I would not look for the running game to go away anytime soon at UA and I would think the same can be said for UGA.

Ok does this kid ever run out of an I formation? That read option crap might work all day in high school but reading your FB blocking and your line is an adjustment he will have to make playing at Bama or UGA

4 All Americans in the upcoming Freshman class at UGA

Crowell presents a strong case for being the top back in the country, but I agree with EW being a blocking back is key!! The next level wil require running backs to be able to pass block and pick up the blitz, otherwise their offense becomes predictable when you have to put in another back just to block. Let’s see if he addresses this part of his game…FYI…there’s a upcoming soph running back (Anthony Covington) at Parkview HS in Gwinnett County that could stir some conversation this season. He’s a total package type back and played some varsity as a fr. take a look at his video up on youTube. Impressive

@C-town, I agree Crowell>Brown and not sure what made you think I thought any different. Mack Brown, great kid and good high school player, but one of the most over-rated college prospects in Georgia last year. See our post-AJC Top 50 rankings. Then again, realistically, no one could live up to the hype MB was getting — the same standards that Crowell will be held too, also. IMO, Mack was product acing drills @ the recruiting combines (40-yard dash, etc.) the previous summer, and recruiting analysts fell in love with him. It happens all the time. He does indeed have all the potential in the world. I think Mack will be in a much better role at Florida (sorta like they used Percy) and has the chance to develop into a very good college player.

seclsfootball: They gave the Heisman to Ingram because BAMA has never had a Heisman winner. The White kid at Stanford t. Gearhart was so much better. Dwyer was so much better too. Ingram got a gimme for playing at Bama. If C. King was at Bama last year he could have won the Heisman because of how the team finished. The Freshman a Virgina Tech was better than Ingram. Give me a Break. Imgram was the 4th best back in the country. The Writers were looking ot give the Heisman to a QB before they all sucked. TOBY would and will STOMP Ingram and new …hole.

M.Carvell, You are 100% right…M.Brown didn’t live up to the Hype. But Crowell will, as long as he stays healthy , he will have a great season. This is the 2nd time Carver high has had the top RB in the Nation, Jasper Sanks 1996…..We all know Jasper had off the field problems @ UGA..But he was a Stud at Carver High, and lived up to the hype in High school…so Crowell should be fine, Good Student, has already past the ACT

Bama’s OL > UGA’s OL. The incoming talent seems equal, but the development of the two lines isn’t close. Bama OLmen reach potential more often than UGA lineman in the past few years. Now I know some UGA fan will bring some obscure fact using an extended amount of years to say UGA is on par with Bama, but Saban’s Tide has done in 4 years what Richt’s Dawgs hasn’t done in 10. There isn’t one neutral college football fan that believes that UGA is anywhere near Bama…

We have some really good up and coming running backs in the state. UGA will land some really good players because we have a good program, good academics and we are not as thick at certaing positions as Bama and UF. I wonder how good Dwyer would have been in an I-formation backfield. Not the smoke and mirrors, who’s got the ball (oh, Washaun and Caleb have it, and they are running all over Grant’s Tomb with it) offense at Tech. I guess we’ll find out if he can cut it in the pros. He’ll get converted to a FB. He chunked up at Tech.
Y’all made fun of “No Show” Moreno at UGA and said he’d never be a good pro….I’d say nearly 1,000 yards sharing carries is a pretty good pro.

I didn’t say Sturdivent was not a nice guy, but he can’t play with his body. I hope he is taking courses in a good field of study. HIS BODY can’t play. His Fat Butt steps on the field and his body breaks. I hope he is smarter than the average Dawg or that was a WASTED Scholarship. Now, please tell I am wrong. If you think he should have kept his scholarship then please don’t tell me about TECH leaving the SEC for that exact reason.
